You really get your money's worth from them. I love a good food truck, such a pleasant atmosphere to sit outside and eat outside. Definitely support these guys. Quick and courteous. They're trying to bring an amazing cuisine to the region. Try Puerto Rican food and you will find a new favorite. Fried plantains are a true guilty pleasure. The truck is parked seemingly permanently off to the side of a Mobil gas station, just a little bit further into Madison past the Trash Pandas Stadium. They offer the option to order online. The menu is fairly large and they do have specials from time to time. The young woman who took my order was polite and personable and I observed her fluently switch from English to Spanish and vice versa depending on customer need. They were doing a pretty solid business. A small vibrating device was passed out to each customer, which would vibrate and ring when the food was ready. I'm pretty sure this is the only truck in the area that offers tlayudas, which is a dish created and primarily prepared in Oaxaca. Here, it's a very large, charred tortilla covered in toppings including beans, veggies, and a protein of choice. I ordered one with chicken so I could try it; I got a burrito with al pastor for my husband. They were serving champurrado as well, and I couldn't resist a cup of that. My food and drink all came out at once and I carted it home to eat. The champurrado was too hot to drink for a while anyway, and the food held up pretty well. When I did get around to drinking, it was thick, not too sweet, and creamy. I think other places I've tried it are actually calling hot chocolate with cinnamon champurrado, but I think this was the real deal, with a heavy masa harina base. I enjoyed it. Husband's burrito was large and quite tasty. The rice inside was cooked nicely. My tlayuda was also pretty good, and huge - lots to eat. The sear on the tortilla added an interesting flavor, with the tortilla itself being alternately crispy and chewy, and the fresh charred jalapeño on top added good heat and flavor. The veggie toppings, especially the beans, were fresh and tasty. Unfortunately, I really didn't like the chicken; it was chopped in small bits and really didn't have much flavor or seasoning. The rubbery texture made it worse. I would order a tlayuda again, but would definitely change up the protein. Husband's al pastor was a better choice. I give three stars for the food. The reason for this two star review is because I watched the man at the front of the restaurant make a Michelada. He is the guy that cashes people out at the register, cleans tables and hands menus out. I didn't see any hand washing before the limes were squeezed into two large styrofoam cups. The first drink had a Bud Light instead of Mexican beer. The second cup had draft beer. He opened a new Clamato bottle so that portion of the drinks was fresh. Menus, cash and credit cards are germy. Odds are this type of behavior may be present at other restaurants. If I see this unsanitary practice, I am inclined to not want to order. It's different if I didn't see. I know we all take a chance when we go out to eat. Restaurants are supposed to follow health department guidelines. Their rating was a respectable 92. It could be an isolated instance and I will return to support this local business. 10-12 years ago the food was great.
