This is best Mexican restaurant I've discovered in huntsville. I highly recommend going here for clado! They have the best crab legs and shrimp. Also if you like to drink, this place is the best for margaritas.

    Spicy head on shrimp!

My husband was raised by an Hispanic woman and grew up eating authentic Mexican cuisine. El Azteca is our favorite for local Mexican.

I enjoy trying places that are new and different. El Azteca is one of those places, so I will do my best to describe it from my senses. This is not a restaurant trying to Americanize. From the waitstaff, to the decor, to something as beautiful as the pico de gallo served here, it is different from what you will find elsewhere. I had the three chicken enchiladas, with the vegetable rice, and beans. The first bite of the enchiladas you notice the acidity of the verde sauce, the tartness of the sour creme, and the texture of the seasoned chicken. On the next bite you will notice the mozzarella cheese on top, and upon the third the peppers (not spicy, but the more bland peppers - I personally would love a spicy pepper hidden inside, thankfully they include sauces on the side of the table so you can adjust spiciness to your preference). The puffy yellow rice is seasoned with peas, carrots, and corn, which pairs well with the enchiladas. The beans are the traditional Mexican beans with a hint of mozzarella. Now for dessert, that is a review for another place but by the same owner. There is a Mexican ice cream shop next door with all kinds of flavors to enjoy. The wait staff speak some english but more Spanish so bring google translate for specifics, definitely ask for the pico de gallo and the guac.

I am a Taco connoisseur. El Azteca has the BEST tacos in Huntsville. No questions asked. To make it even better. They are cheap! $1.20!!! I can't get over how good this places is. I have to eat here once a week or I get cranky!

Plato de Azteca, includes grilled shrimp, carne asada, grilled veggies, rice, beans and a side of avocado with 4 corn tortillas.

We've been to El Vaquero twice now to play trivia. While we enjoy the clean amenities and our…read moretrivia caller, both times, we've all been incredibly unhappy with our food. The restaurant is spacious and gets loud when there's a crowd. Thankfully, there's usually a place for our larger group (6 people) to be seated comfortably. Service is very nice but slow. Trivia runs for a little over an hour and both times our food has taken about 45 minutes to come out, despite our comparatively small orders. My friend who comes to trivia does like the food here (he always gets a beef chimichanga FWIW), but everyone else has now tried several different dishes and not once been satisfied or even just not unhappy. The one shining star has been the cheese dip. It really is pretty good cheese dip, lol. The first time I ordered the chipotle chicken, which is supposed to be chicken in a chipotle sauce. I was firstly surprised and disappointed to see these were small strips of chicken rather than a chicken breast. But that would've been okay...had the chipotle sauce been decent. It had no chipotle flavor and honestly mostly just tasted like sour cream. It was very weird. My parents have tried a beef burrito, beef taco, and chicken taco. They said the beef has an unpleasant metallic taste and the shredded chicken was, according to my dad, inedible. Most recently, my husband got a carne asada burrito and said it tasted so unpleasant he was concerned about whether he should even eat it. Fortunately, no ill effects came about as a result of it; he determined it was ultimately just very low quality meat with an unpleasant texture and taste. My father in law just doesn't order anything except a beer after coming for breakfast once and having a bad time there, too. On my most recent visit, I got a side of rice and beans to eat with chips and cheese dip. The rice had been cooked into sticky, mushy lumps and had no flavor. At this point, I have no idea what to order that might even come close to satisfying my palate. It's disappointing. We may be forced back due to circumstances like our availability in order for us to play our favorite game and have time together. If so, I'll continue to try different things until I can maybe someday find something that works. I want to like this place and wish I had the experience so many other reviewers have had.

We were quickly seated and drinks brought out. Chips and salsa arrived next. Dave ordered the birria tacos and I ordered the lunch chicken fajitas and chicken chipotle soup. The birria tacos were 3 each and served with consommé, red sauce, green sauce, and rice. The consommé was flavored well with fresh onions and cilantro. Each birria taco had beef, cheese, onions and cilantro. Taking a bite, the tasty consommé made the taco flavor enhanced. These tacos were delicious. 5/5 The chicken fajitas and accompanying salad plate with corn tortillas was delicious. The meat was flavored well and there was a generous portion of food. 5/5 My chicken chipotle soup was delicious. The accompanying onions, cilantro, jalapeños and rice allowed me to create a perfect taste. 5/5 The chips and salsa were so good. Everything we ate was very delicious! Y'all need to stop by and give this restaurant a try. 5/5

We specifically came for margaritas during their social hour. $3 off a set list plus seasonals. There was a table card listing seasonal drinks. I specifically asked our waitress if the Christmas margarita was considered seasonal. She assured me it was, until we got our check and she said it wasn't. I'm not arguing over $6 but $26 for two watered down drinks was not a social hour deal. It's not a deal anywhere. My husband and I shared the three different empanadas gracing the social hour menu. The chicken was delicious, the beef was ok but the fish was fishy. So much so that I didn't even get to a second bite. We ordered chips, salsa and queso for the group. The chips were great - crisp and airy. The queso was good though unremarkable, the green salsa was great. The red was a tad hot for me but everyone else at the table disagreed with me. Husband and I shared the enchiladas verdes. Three chicken enchiladas were served with a plate of nearly tasteless rice. The enchiladas were dry. Even queso didn't help. I ate half of one and my husband didn't even want my second. We didn't take home the leftover enchilada. That pretty much sums them up - not even worthy of a to-go box. With tip, our check was $90. Way too much for such a mediocre meal. We just walked in the door. Hanging up our jackets, we agreed - we won't go back.

The owner at the front of the restaurant is polite and very helpful with menu selections. Food/Drink: I ordered a Jamaica (Hibiscus). It wasn't too sweet, and had the right amount of tartness. Compared to Tex Mex and Mexican restaurants in town, they provide a meager amount of chips, but they are freshly made with some homemade salsa. I didn't really have to worry about snacking on the chips because my food came out fairly quickly. I ordered some Mole Enchiladas and received some large portions. The chicken enchiladas were a little juicy, and the mole really enhanced the flavor. I loved the smokiness of the ancho falling through + the chocolate flavor. The cotija cheese and crema drizzled on top of the mole was good too. It had a tinge of sweetness, and paired well with the Jamaica. I recommend you try this place out!
