I recently returned to this restaurant after a previous disappointing experience, and I'm really glad I gave it another chance. This time, everything was noticeably better. The food was fresh, well-prepared, and full of flavor--exactly what I had hoped for the first time. The service was also much more attentive and welcoming, which made a big difference in the overall experience. I truly appreciate Nicolas & Hector when a restaurant takes feedback seriously and makes improvements. It shows care, professionalism, and respect for their customers. Nice treat for a working lunch today! We met out for lunch at noon and they do a great business! Very full and seated promptly and had great service! The table mostly went for the street tacos and everyone was very happy! I opted for the Big Fish taco lunch special served with green rice and black beans. The fish taco was really well done. My mom and I had just flown into Huntsville after a cruise out of Florida and we hadn't eaten since 6 am. We went to Phil Sandoval's after googling "Mexican Food near me". Both of us being Texans we've been very disappointed in any Mexican restaurants near us in Tennessee so when I say we had really good food, it was like being back in Texas eating great TexMex! The service was prompt and courteous. The chips were thin and delicate just like I like them. There's a Phil's extra spicy salsa that was delicious! We started with a black bean and cheese dip and it was hot and really good. My mom had flautas and I had a delicious beef burrito and taco. Neither of us wanted the rice so we subbed a delicious cup of poblano and chicken soup that was like a warm hug! Try the margaritas! Mom had a frozen coconut margarita and I had mangorita on the rocks. Both were very tasty! Ice cream comes free at the end of the meal but we passed bc we were stuffed and still took home leftovers. My friend from Virginia was here visiting and we went to Phil Sandoval's for Tex Mex. She used to live here and liked this restaurant. This being the week after a holiday the people were in restaurants enjoying time with family and friends. We arrived at 6:30 and waited less than 5 minutes for a nice booth. She ordered beef fajitas and we ordered double chicken fajitas. Our waitress was nice and had too many tables she was working. Our fajitas came out with little chicken and lots of onions and bell peppers. They were not sizzling at all and the vegetables were soft and mushy. The beef fajitas sizzled but the vegetables were mushy. The rice was not hot and the beans were lukewarm. I like hot food in a restaurant. When food isn't hot I wonder about health code violations. It may be due to the holidays the amount of people overwhelmed the kitchen. I am not sure. The food was not amazing and the waitress had too many tables to be efficient and effective. I ate here for the first time recently and although the service was very good, I ended up liking the salsa and the borracho beans only. I was completely dismayed with everything else I tried. I am a lover of enchiladas with red sauce, and was delighted to see that they offer so many different sauce choices! Prior to ordering, I asked to first try the 'ranchero sauce' and the 'chile gravy' to decide which one to go with on my enchiladas. I did not like either one of these sauces. AT ALL. I was super disappointed... I decided to order the Vegetable Burrito as I thought it would be a safe bet. It has 'creamy spinach sauce' on top, which I assumed was basically melted cheese with spinach, but it was something completely different. It tastes almost bitter-ish?? Not a good flavor at all. The ambience is 10 out of 10! Nice decor and good music. However, the food was bland. The 2 different entrees we ordered were bland and tasteless. including the Queso dip and guacamole appetizers. The Queso tasted & looked like it had flour added to thicken it . Staff was very nice and friendly -- but we've had better food visiting my grandmothers assisted living facility and eating in her cafeteria! In the words of Chef Gordon Ramsey, "Where are the standards? It's like the kitchen doesn't even care anymore!" I can't imagine how good this restaurant could be if the food quality improved. My family love's Mexican food, and Phil Sandoval's is the best in town. We have tried them all.... Every meal is properly prepared and tastes great. They have good variety on their menu. They are a little on the "pricey" side compared to others, but it is well worth it for the quality. The moment I knew the food was going to be great was after taking my first bite of the chips that they provided. You know it's authentic and home made when the chips are thin & crispy & light. The Mambo Taxi frozen sangria drink I ordered was amazing! The shrimp on the fajita was very delicious and it was bouncy and tasted fresh! One of the best shrimps I have eaten by far!! The fish tacos are superb, especially after adding the pickled veggies and honey mustard-ish sauce. I love their thin crispy chips but am not crazy about their salsa or cheese dip. The cheese dip tastes like a jar of Tostitos cheese. The fish tacos are always spot-on though. read more

We stopped in for an early dinner while doing some shopping. We were pretty dissatisfied with our visit. The service was extremely slow for a day that was not busy at all. The food was very blah and bland this visit. I had the combo pollo loco. My dish arrived cold and encapsulated in cheese dip that had sat and hardened like that magic shell chocolate you put on ice cream. It was horrible. The other dish was the chicken flautas, which is a pretty simple dish, but it was a swing and a miss too. Very bland chicken and cold as well. I attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for Trust But Verify Clearances and Fingerprinting on Redstone Arsenal Army Base and we learned that Phil Sandoval was involved somehow with sponsorship. Their food is always great at their restaurant, affordable and tasty. Their location was in Athens that we visited after that event. The place is friendly and comfortable. We gave them quite a bit of business for our meetings after we learned they're involved in the community and give back. This was our second time to this place. The first time it was great-- great food great service,-- loved it. Last night we got there early, and the place was next to empty. Yet, they sat us up in the corner, where the wait staff hang out. As you walk into the main dining room immediately over on the far left near the window, that's where we sat. It would've been OK except when four or five wait staff were standing around talking for a good 20-30 minutes and I felt like we were eating in the employee break room. Another issue we had was all of our food came out at the same time. We order the double Fajitas. It comes with soup. We should've gotten our soup first and then gotten the fajitas afterwards. Instead, it all came out together. We had to hurry and eat our soup before it got cold. In the meantime our fajitas chilled off. Nothing worse than eating cold Mexican food that's supposed to be hot. Maybe, if we go back we will wait till it's busier and we might get a little better service. It really seemed strange, since there was only four tables with people at them when we came. Oh well. Oh and we were told there's no ice cream like we got last time, free with the meal. We were told that the machine wasn't working it right before we ask. I don't understand how this place has such high reviews. As soon as the chips and salsa arrived after one bite I knew the food was going to suck. The salsa tasted like tomato paste. I asked for a spicy version and that was a bit better but still not good. I ordered steak fajitas which were brought to my table within 2 minutes of my ordering it (how is that possible????). The meat was chewy and had an off flavor with onions and peppers that were so soggy they looked like something that comes from a can for a hot dog cart. No tortillas came with the food, had to wait for the fajitas to stop sizzling before my waitress asked if I wanted tortillas (yea think?) The place looks nice enough, typical Mexican restaurant. The pulled pork burrito was not pulled pork but a fatty cut of beef shoulder. Nothing on it but some meat and a little beans. The beef was not seasoned at all and the taste was evident. Fantastic food, great servers and wonderful margaritas. Have been in several times, after the first time they remembered me! The owner or manager comes around to your table and ask if everything is good. We went yesterday afternoon and they had a great singer on patio playing. They also, had games for kids outside.
