Sergei was inconsiderate, rude and careless. He took his time answering a call on his cellphone after he started my haircut, he had me wait without saying excuse me or acknowledging it afterwards either. He then acted very unpleasant after I asked if he could use his cellphone to lookup a photo of a hairstyle I wanted. Then after that, he didn't even come close to giving me the haircut I showed him. It was obvious, he intentionally provided very poor attention to my request which was fairly simple. The female at the register with blonde hair had a very poor unpleasant bedside manor also. I've been coming here for years now and have tried other barbers and also have gone to the fancier salons paying $65 and up on a men's haircut which btw is redic. Anyway, so at Boris, the price is $32 for a men's cut. Prices recently went up this year (like everything else) but this place is still half of what you'd normally pay elsewhere. As far as barbers here, I've been to Olga who is really good, but recently my go-to guy is Sergey. His cuts are great and I always leave with a great clean cut! It's always been difficult to find a good consistent haircut in the area. I've tried numerous barbers and all of them were either terrible on the first cut or weren't consistent. I've been loyal to Boris' barber shop for over 18 years. In addition to being very expensive ($37 for a short hair cut plus tip), this last visit was the final straw. The barber I had (Jacob) was playing chess on his phone during my haircut. After five minutes of this, I asked what's going on and he laughed and said "just playing chess." WTF!! So, I came here with only an hour to get a haircut and man... They barely made it. My normal barber take 10-15min max, but the staff here seem more interested in answering personal calls and ignoring your input than actually getting a job done. The haircut ended up looking okay, after I had to keep asking her to actually cut it to the length I wanted it and not leave.me with 2" long bangs... I usually get a buzz cut so you can imagine how annoying it was to keep reminding her for what I had actually requested. Once the haircut was mostly done, she used a hair dryer to blow off the trimmings, only to rest it on the back of my head for 5sec while she pulled her phone out of her pocket. I didn't realize this until I felt the burning sensation on my neck and I jumped up, out of the chair only to hear the hair dryer crash to the floor. I wasn't hurt or anything, but it's insane to have a hot hairdryer rested on you while the hairdresser checks her texts. I will not be coming back. TL;DR:. Bad staff and over priced. read more

To buzz or not to buzz, that is the question. So I finally convinced my used-to-going-to-the-hair-salon rock n' roll husband to try a $19 haircut at Boris' Barber Shop around the corner from our house. I asked all my lady friends where to get a man's cut and this is where they told me to go. I went along for the experience. The only female in the place (but of course), the atmosphere was truly an old school barber with one TV playing sports and the other one on the news. Boris and his guys were friendly and made us feel welcome. My husband got in the chair, explained the kind of cut he was looking for - layers, a little longish, a little short here and there - and the barber laughed (he really laughed), pulled out the buzzer, and went to town. Clever conversation and lots of man talk and joke telling, these guys don't mess around. Before my husband knew it, he was officially a rock n' roll dude with a really short man-in-a-suit cut. I didn't know how to respond other than to tell him it looked great...gulp! Best old school barber shop in the area, period. Sure there's Franco & Pino in uptown Highland Park as well, but they're both getting a little long in the tooth, and Boris is my new go to. Although the guys are Russian, it has as old-school an Italian barbershop vibe as you're gonna find; complete with spiraling barber poll, map of the boot & a bullet casing from Godfather mounted on the wall. Boris (the Owner & namesake) is friendly, polite, and is good with anyone from 8-80 years old. Sergei is also a very good stylist, but if you can, ask for Nick. He's the young guy and there's not a human being on earth I'd trust with my hair besides him. Not an exaggeration either. They offer old-school hot shaves, and manicures in the back. It's just a classic barbershop with great staff and a good haircut. There's TV's for the kids, and if you're into hockey, the walls are lined with memorabilia. Was there yesterday and was vary impressed. I moved up to the North Shore from Naperville a few years ago and have been looking for a decent barber shop to replace the old one I used to visit. $25 bucks for a great haircut (with tip) is good in my book and on pair with other quality barber shops. It's also hard to come by barber shops which offer a good shave (for a good price) as well but this place does and I know I'll be getting one on my next visit. I love getting my haircut here, they always get it just the right shape. I'm a fan of haircuts in general, but this place is chill and the people know . The one problem I have at most barber shops is when I go more then once to the same place, they give me the same hair style over and over and over again. I have been looking for a new place to go for a haircut recently. After reading the excellent reviews this place has been getting, I decided to give them a try. I called yesterday (8/3), shortly after 10:30 am, asking about openings. The woman who answered the phone asked me if I could get there @10:45. I told her I could, but then remembered that I needed to get to an ATM (they only accept cash). There happens to be a CHASE BANK just north of the barbershop, but I would not have enough time. She said as long as I could get to the shop by 10:45, we would deal with payment afterwards. I got there right on time, and a pleasant looking woman with a great smile beckons me to a chair, and introduces herself as Olga. I asked if it was her that I spoke with on the phone, and she said it was. I wound up getting a great haircut, during which I commented that I qualified for the Senior Discount ($2 off M-Th). Evidently, they changed the policy to M-W, but forgot to update the website. Having never been to the shop, my info was strictly from the website. She said no problem (this time only). So,... not only did I get a great haircut, with the discount, in 20 minutes time... then, she allows me to go to the ATM to get my $!!! This woman doesn't know me from Adam!!! After I asked what I could leave with her for collateral, she laughed and said "maybe your shoes"? Great shop... great haircut... great people! I'll be back! read more

I've been a customer of Boris' shop for about 3-4 years and always went to Sergey (the younger one who has been there a while) and was always very pleased with the service that I got. This last time however I found that Sergey had left and I had the other Sergey give me my haircut. While the haircut that I got may have been considered a "good" haircut by some, he didn't listen to me at all and proceeded to cut my hair much shorter than I wanted and completely shaved off my sideburns (that weren't very long to begin with). Its going to be months before my hair is long enough for another haircut and you can bet I'm going some place else. read more
