Gino was mentioned in a Chicago Magazine's "Best of" column so I decided to check it out. On my first couple of visits, I was very pleased. Gino was quite entertaining (jovial outspoken Sicilian man in his mid-40s?) and gave me a good cut for $20. Why the one-star? Searched High and Low for someone to cut my hair after leaving the city. Tried every place imaginable on the North Shore. Driving through Highwood and saw the red and blue striped symbol of a true blue Barber shop. Could this be real? First sign as I walked in, a loud "Chao" from Gino, then I saw the "girly magazines/ I don't partake, but that is a good sign. And no women waiting. No chemical smell of curlers, etc. Been going to Gino ever since with my boys. He is , a great barber and he is a wealth of information about the North Shore. If it is your first visit, ask him if a woman or man cut your hair last...he will know. He will also know if someone other than himself has cut your hair. He is that good. My only 5-Star post so far. New customers beware: Wednesday and Saturday cuts require an appt. Walked into the barber shop last Saturday afternoon, Gino barely looked up and finally got around to asking if we had an appointment. When I responded "no", he just shook his head and said he couldn't take my two sons. I get it but at the same time, as a small business owner, one would think he'd offer another time to squeeze them in -- that day or another. That attitude speaks volumes. Gino provides a great cut at a great price plus his personality warms up the place. He can be a little edgy at times, but he always greets everyone warmly , holds court in his time machine from the 50s barbershop, he has been very accommodating to me since the day I came in with big plastic stitches from my two brain surgeries, took great care in giving me a haircut and always assists this partially disabled man into the chair. He has viewpoints consistent with an immigrant coming from Italy who is trying to make a life for himself and his family here in the US. I've been going to Gino's for over 20 years, back to when he used to be next to Tacos El Norte and across from Hoagie Hut. It baffles me to see anyone give this guy a bad review. He gives an exceptional haircut and takes care of his regulars. When I sit down he asks me 2 or 3 (buzz length) and handles the rest. If I have to get my haircut somewhere else the experience is never the same. Hes always hilarious and doesn't waste your time with any fancy fluff. Gino has cut my hair for over 20 years, and I have no complaints. He still charges a very competitive 22 dollars and does a quick and clean job. The best part of going to see Gino is the jokes that he tells, granted they might seem to be semi racist/rude to someone completely stuck up, but that's the fun of going to Gino's. If you want a boring old man to cut your hair while you sit there counting the minutes, Gino isn't your man.
