I was going down to Long Island. I remembered my friend Glenn told me all about this record store. It was in Mineola not far away from where I was going to Manhasset New York. Hard to get parking on the street in front of the record store. There's a few spots, but I went around to a parking lot around back behind where the hardware store in diner are. I went and it was pretty busy even on a Tuesday at around 1:15 PM. I was impressed how well organized the store was clean looking too. One of the employees notice me and said "may I help you" I said I was just looking around. I see how it's organized with the CDs and DVDs. He said in the back of the vintage records and cassettes . Everything was laid out very nicely and organized well. Lots and lots of DVDs Blu-ray discs lots and lots of CDs. Many many records as well. Prices looked great on the DVDs. Somewhere $.99 dollar $.99 $2.99 TV box sets also inexpensive. Very good prices on The Records as well. CDs as well but I didn't look at too many of them. I really wanted to check out the cassette section. They had two big sections of cassettes both of them. You had to ask one of the employees to open up the sliding doors. Except for one section with folk cassettes, and some Grateful Dead live cassettes. Immediately picked out about 10 folk cassettes . Pete seger Bonnie Raitt. The letterman, etc.. I went up to the front and told the guy to please unlock the cassette area. Lots of rock and pop from A-to-Z. Most prices were $.99 $1.99. $2.99 $3.99. Some more hard to get ones were $4.99 $6.99. Anyway, I picked up well over 30 tapes. Definitely some I haven't seen before on cassette others. I wanted to get, but were a little pricey in other stores. I told the guy was ready at the front and he came back to lock the area where all the cassettes were. He said wow you got quite a collection of tapes there. He helped carry up a bunch of them. I left them at the counter for them to start pricing. They said thank you for helping clear out some of the cassettes. Maybe not that many people get cassettes anymore. But I still have a cassette deck in my Lincoln town car. As well as a nice couple of boxes, walkmans and a nice tape deck for my stereo system hi-fi system Lots of good CDs. I looked at while they were checking out the tapes The employees were very friendly. I talked to them as they were finishing ringing up the tapes they gave me a punchcard and I got five punches. They told me the stores been there for 40+ years. I'll have to go back and look through the CDs and DVDs next time I go down there. I would definitely recommend this record store. Everything is clean, not dusty or musty laid out very nicely and clearly. There are fantastic deals here. Be careful you might spend too much money and go home with a load of stuff. read more

Not the friendliest atmosphere or the cleanest. It's the media equivalent of a thrift store. You might find something neat here or there but for those wondering why they are called Mr. Cheapo, it's likely because of the experience selling items to the store. Not pleasant, they will lowball you to less than 10% of the value of your item, hem and haw about how they won't be able to sell it for much, then list it for way way way more than they told you they would. I come here if I'm bored and need to kill some time but it's never a fun experience really. read more

I've come to this store for years and it's hard to give it an honest review. But to the people who want to sell their things like CDs, DVDs, VHS and laserdisc/ players, it's definitely not here. They'll try to lowball you instead of giving you a fare offer, they do it all the time. Also the guy with glasses in the counter was given my buddy a hard time when he was trying to negotiate his DVDs. Like not giving him a better offer or other options. The guy who works there probably had a bad day, but I don't think anybody would want to put up with his attitude. Also If you're looking for a specific title. They may or may not have it, so you're better off finding it somewhere else. *In conclusion. It's fairly good. I think for most people who want to find physical media, discover and stay away from the internet for a bit. Above average, it's not a bad store read more

Fun, eclectic mix of vintage cds, dvds, vinyls, classic electronics, such as DVD players, stereos, and the like. You can get lost in enjoying the nostalgia of it all all day long. The owner plays a good mix of music to keep you feening for yesteryear. Bring any Classics you may have around and see what you can get. Can easily make a new friend and bond with those who have come to enjoy erstwhile. It's a but cramped and crammed with stuff but that's part of its charm. read more

We love this pizza! Living out-of-state, l am an original New Yorker, and finding excellent pizza at a reasonable price is always a process. Coming to Old Bethpage for a few-months stay, my daughter's and l hit pay dirt with 3 Brother's! They have a great BOGO we saw on Door Dash and decided to try it, after over- paying and being disappointef at other local pizza parlors. Well, we were very happy! Both the regular and the grandmother pies were excellent. Additionslly the Family deal was great too, offering pasta, ( we had the penne Alfredo) pizza, salad and very good Ciabatta bread! Was just there again today and always find something I missed or just another album or cd to add to the collection!! Been going to Mr. Cheapos for over 20 years. Staff is always helpful and very friendly in both stores, Commack and Mineola. I don't live close to either one but when I'm in the area it's always a must, that I stop and see what new stuff they got in. Drives my wife nuts cause sometimes I spend a little too much time in the store, but there's a lot to go through, sorry (hahaha). Great prices on used Cd's, records, games, DVDs, Blu Rays. Literally stuff in every corner of the store. When I was younger, for the hell of it I would drive the 45 minutes just to go to the store and look. I'd say about more than half of my music collection has came from Mr. Cheapos, which is a little over 4,000 cds and records. It's rare I ever left the store empty handed. Not too many stores like this left on Long Island who are reasonably priced and friendly. So, if your in either Commack or Mineola you definitely need to stop by, you're sure to find something. read more

Moved out of New York 3 years ago but remembered this place from a while back. Had to visit Long Island last weekend and thought I would see if Mr Cheapo's was still there. I was in for a treat, found some DVD's and CD's I was really looking for and it helped make my trip even better. Well organized, well stocked, and just a terrific shopping experience. This place is cool. I like this place. No, let me correct myself, I LOVE THIS PLACE. (Both locations, Commack and Mineola). Long on my bucket list of record shops in the Long Island and NYC areas. Mr. Cheapo is 100% old-school. For collectors, old-school is a good thing because it means the owner and staff are very knowledgeable about what they are selling and you're gonna find what your looking for, if not, they will make a note and keep you in mind when it does come through their doors. What I liked: Firstly, there's a huge ROCK collection, primarily on vinyl, but well represented on CD too. My biggest score though was blues on vinyl, followed by some outstanding jazz on vinyl. For collectors there is a preference for early or first pressings, and it takes years of research and experience to develop a sense of what is what. Needless to say, careful examination of the playing surfaces, preferably in daylight, is required for used records. Is that a deep, feel-able scratch? Or, is it a surface scuff with no affect on the playback? Secondly, after praising the owner and staff earlier, another reason they rock is that they have a turntable and CD player to preview unsealed record and Cd's. They also have tons of cassettes, and 45's, sheet music, posters, books, shirts, you name it. Let me mention they also carry or can order anything newly released. Parking: The Mineola location is street only and public parking lot around the corner which may be meter paying but I've always lucked out and found a spot on the street right in front. Commack location is no problem at all as their located in the Mayfair Shopping Center with plenty of free parking. Prices: After hitting a dozen or so places on Long Island and the West and East village NYC, I found their prices on par or below for the most rare and collectible items, but well under other stores for CD's and general stock used and out of print items (vinyl too!). Plus, they always have a large section of $1 vinyl. At the Commack store it's usually on the floor in the back of the store but it's worth getting on your knees for. I've found some gems in that pile over the years. Selling or trade-ins: I have sold stuff to both stores. They give the most competitive and best prices out there for buying your used stuff. That's if they except it. First, it has to be in quality, resalable condition. Second, they must need it. I have been turned down myself by them, only because they were overstocked and/or had a few copies already in the store. Which is all understandable. Growing up in Levittown, this place reminds me of a store on Hempstead Turnpike called "The Glass Onion" (early 70's). It was my first taste of used records, underground comics, incense, posters, and cool people all in one place...I'm now 60 years old and couldn't be happier that Mr.Cheapo is keeping that tradition (and my youth) alive. All-in-all, Mr. Cheapo is the perfect place to start building up a diverse collection in nearly every style and genre of music. What are you waiting for - "Get on your bike and ride"! Fun little record shop, where you can trust you'll find some cool stuff.. Off hand, I can recall finding things like.. -Vintage records -Rare DVDs -Rare live CDs -New rock music on vinyl and CD Prices are somewhat competitive and once in a while you can get a cheat (cheap) code for a nice discount, especially when buying lots of stuff! Always remember to get or bring your Cheapo's card with you, to get punched in with every purchase!! Another nice way of getting a discount! Customer service is a strong-point and the staff is friendly. They'll make you feel welcome, and won't make you feel like you're being watched. The ambience is nice, if you love a classic NYC record shop. The wood floors are old, there's just enough space to get around and the items are organized well. Disappointed in yesterdays visit. Picked up a couple of 45 records. Sign said 45s are $2 unless otherwise marked. Picked up 5. 2 had stickers. Others had none. At checked out i was charged nearly a buck more for each three. 2.99 vs 2.00. Girl ringing me up nor her coworker or boss watching her had a problem overcharging me. The last of the great vintage record stores in NY! This place has been around since the 1980's and it's the absolute BEST and coolest place to find old records, cds, movies, etc. Not only that, a great staff that is not only accommodating, but know their music!! You can easily enjoy an hour or two just looking at all the cool stuff they have while always listening to the great music they're playing all day! They should make this store a landmark!! read more

Agree with other reviewers and had similar experience. he picked out 45 records he wanted to buy. i had called several times last few weeks and he said he pays not more than 50 cents per LP. he offered me $17 for 45 which he stiffed me $5. I have been going to Mr Cheapos forever. I visit both locations, but tend to go to Commack more often recently (closer). They have stuff that I don't see anywhere else and the used section is incredible! As my music tastes change, I am also able to get a few bucks for albums I'm no longer interested in to put towards new ones. The staff is always knowledgeable and friendly, and have great recommendations. They have been my go-to since I was a teenager and never disappoint. read more

I have to agree with Christine and her posting of 5/1/2012. I understand that you must buy lower then you sell it for but that is not the same as taking advantage of people. We brought in bags of CDs (approximate 300 items) - some of them were still new and sealed, others were multipdisc sets. The gentleman glanced at them and offered $20 for everything telling me that they were not worth anything. That is less than $0.07 each We were then told to take it or leave it. My recommendation is to know the value of what you are selling before walking in here. I did not do my research but we also realized that at seven cents a piece we had nothing to lose by walking away and doing our research We went online to www.secondspin.com and realized that we can sell them online for significantly (exponentially) more money. I ended up selling most of them to a store in NYC and they offered me close to what www.secondspin.com was offering. read more

They have a huge selection of vinyls, cds, and movies. Honestly I was so overwhelmed by all the records that I didn't know where to start! I could have bought them all! The records were in great shape too. They weren't scratched up and dirty. I believe that you can buy new sleeves for the records as well. I have been going to Mr. Cheapos locations since I was a toddler. They used to have more locations but only the Mineola and Commack locations remain after the digital age. This location is quite impressive and well organized. If you are an avid music collector it is hard to leave here without spending $75-100 bucks. I would say CD's are more abundant but they have some vinyl in the back as well as cassettes. The used DVD wall is also very well organized and has cult classics, box office best sellers and everything in between. Parking is around back in a metered lot and usually always has availability. Great food in the area and not too far from the Meadbowbrook parkway. read more

Mr Cheapo is the first place to go on Long Island for records outside of NYC's Kim's, Generation Records, & Bleeker Bob's. They have a few rarities and will buy your old records. My music collecting musician husband told me a story about checking out at Mr Cheapo's which makes me crack up. Apparently one of the clerks pretended he was on a public address system and said loudly, "Beep-boo-bop-boo-beep (as if it was some kind of address system sound). Mr Cheapo's will be closing in 5 minutes. Please bring your selections to the front." He did this a few times until the store was fully closed. read more

This is a great store. There's wall to wall records, CDs and cassettes to purchase. The records and cassettes are for purist and old school music people. You can probably find almost anything you are looking for or might like here. They have a cheap buy back but that's probably because they need to make a profit too. I bought a bunch of CDs here one time hoping to make a lot of money and I only got $19. read more
