Perfectly fine. My wife and I were intrigued by the Dutch-Indonesian combo of Borrel's offering so decided to stop by for a late lunch. And while there wasn't anything bad, there also wasn't anything memorable. We got: - Bitterballen: It's a traditional Dutch bar snack which is kinda like deep fried meatballs if the inside was really creamy beef. Interesting, though don't quite get all the raving reviews about it. I guess I can see how it would have tasted a lot better with a drink, since all that deep fried-ness definitely will help soak up the alcohol. - Frikandel with upgraded War Fries: Deep-fried sausage which was tasty though not anything different and size was small for the price. The "war fries" were basically fries (which were done really well as they almost tasted slightly sweet and the potato-ness really came through) with a side sauce combination of mayo, peanut satay and onions (interesting combo, though the mayo overpowered the other two). - Chicken Satay: The skewers were a good size. A bit overcooked though the tasty peanut sauce saved it. - Nasi Goreng: The rice was cooked well (not overly hard or soft, stuck nicely together, very flavourful), the rest of the dish was nondescript. - Pannenkoeken: Their famous 'thinner than a pancake thicker than a crepe' offering, you can get this sweet or savoury. We chose sweet, and got ours with apples, cinnamon and powdered sugar. It had a good size, though kinda tasted just like a crepe with less filling to me. Service was friendly and efficient. Apparently, Borrel has a seasonal menu (they'll have these rich stews come winter), and used to have a more extensive offering pre-covid. Maybe we'll give it another try months from now, in the hopes that something fine turns into something awesome.

I really enjoyed my experience here. It's seems like the kind of restaurant where the waiters know your name. My waitress was super friendly and knowledgeable about what accommodations could be made for me as a vegan. They have a selection of beers on tap and a varied menu. I definitely want to go back to try some other dishes.

Poffertjes - my favourite Dutch dessert

I have had an amazing love affair with Dutch food for many years now. I have even made two trips to The Netherlands because of this. So when I found out the Borrel had a physical location I had to go and see it for my self. I have been a big fan of Borrel, following them on social media to see where they would go next. Now that they have their own physical location I of course went. This location small but cozy, the service is very friendly, and what brings me back every time is the pofferjes! I don't know what it is about these dessert but is has a spell on me. This is my first visit here, I am happy and satisfied with the food and service. I will be back in the near future and hopefully many, many more times.

I have been looking for good Dutch food (reminisced of Amsterdam) since I got back and this place delivered. First off, the cider was great. Not Dutch or anything, just a solid cider. I was happy with it. The bitterballen brought me RIGHT back. There is NO where to get this delicious little ball of fried gravy, and I devoured them. They were perfect. Dutch fries, while not as good as Belgian fries, are amazing, and the ones here delivered. Eat them with mayo or curry ketchup. Just do it. 10/10 recommend.

    Herring!

I was so excited when I found out thus restaurant was opening. Ever since going to Amsterdam a few years ago, I've been missing the Dutch raw herring that was so widely available. I have not been able to find a suitable alternative in Toronto until this restaurant came along!! Borrell is a small restaurant on the Danforth and was packed when we went on a Saturday evening. Service was prompt, herring was awesome, beer selection was good! Only downside (or upside, however you look at it) is they only prepare about 10 orders off herring a day. The fish must be fresh so they are not able to prepare too many of it! They don't have a big menu, but food was pretty good! To end, good service, great food!

I stopped by in a recent visit to Toronto when it made more sense to wait for my wife than to drive back and forth from our hotel in Mississauga amidst... hey did you know that (unscientific as this may be) traffic may actually be worst on weekends than during the week? Reason is that, while many folks commute using public transit, car owners drive to their destinations on weekends. This is a small, sun-shiny kind of space, with Wifi. The front part, especially, is a good place to bask in the rays. They seem to offer a few food choices for breakfast and lunch, but since I was just looking for a place to hang out for 90 minutes, I was going to be "minimal patron". I thought about another coffee, but decided against it, since I already had double the caffeine I usually consume before noon, I opted for the "cheapest" choice, in the form of a Perrier. Cha-ching and "ouch" and $3.74 later (OK it's CAD, but still), I'm left wondering whether I could have made a better choice: as in, a cookie and that bottle of water I had with me?

We tried the egg & cream cheese and the ham & Swiss, and wow... insanely buttery, perfectly flaky on the outside, and soft on the inside. This was definitely due to everything being made fresh in-house. When we ordered, we caught a glimpse of trays of butter-loaded croissants at the back, ready to go into the oven. My partner straight up said it was the best croissant she's ever had--so that says a lot. Drinks held up too. The strawberry latte was super refreshing, with a tangy syrup that paired really nicely with the espresso. My dirty chai was solid, though I was a bit bummed they didn't have stovetop chai--it just hits different. I liked how they host local artists' works & shows too. It's a very intimate & community driven cafe.

They make their baked goods on site, so if you are lucky, you can get things hot out of the oven. My favourites are the ham and cheese croissant and "eggy boy" (round croissant with egg, goat cheese and pepper). There is wifi and they have newspapers, so it's the kind of place to relax and stay a while. In the summer, there are a few patio tables. Year round there is an outdoor seating area (benches) which is perfect for bringing your dog (they also have nice dog treats!!). I have been many times and recognize the regulars there -- neighbourhood folks, people with their kids and dogs, and on weekend mornings, the cyclists. It's a real local gem!

I love ginger beverages- it wasn't overpowering here, I mostly tasted the kiwi and sparkling lemonade. My friend got one of their banana bread drinks - if you like the taste of hojicha, this was particularly strong which I personally enjoyed! Love how the store also has sections where it is like a little market selling local goods and always fun to see the dogs that are sitting outside. The prices are a little expensive (my refresher before tax was $7.5) but typical for what you'd pay in Toronto for a fun drink, from what I've seen.

Drinks I tried: Maple Goguma Latte - Slightly nutty, lightly sweet, and super comforting. I added a shot of espresso, which made it perfectly balanced and not too sweet. Dalgona Latte - A really fun drink with great texture. Just make sure to stir it well since the sweetness settles at the bottom. Definitely a must-visit if you love cozy cafés, unique drinks, and supporting local artists.

Expectation wise? Don't expect Michelin star chefs or fancy interiors. It's a very humble setup in a non-traditional office building with staff who go the extra mile to assist customers. My pasta was made on the spot by the same person who took my order and made my espresso. He was a very honest, hard worker who served customers while making the food and drinks from scratch. I watched him meticulously cleaning all the cooking equipment, espresso machine, countertops, surfaces, and cleaning the floors after serving his customers. I was very impressed by his work ethic and dedication. I tried the penne pasta with mushroom and sausage topped with Alfredo sauce. It came with garlic bread and salad. Their number one ordered meal. So good! The penne pasta with rossa sauce (rose sauce) came with chicken and mushrooms. I prefer the Alfredo sauce as it was rich creamy and delicious. However what made my experience a good one was the hospitality and attentiveness of the staff. In today's fast food world, good service warrants a higher star rating!
