Boston's twee / cozy witch bookstore option. Arranged for maximum serendipity and angled to provide maximum in privacy in minimum space, this is at once your cool aunt's Cape cottage and a place you can't bring your mom because she cringes at the name. A book store that is run by someone who is a reader first, business person second, but trusts themselves enough to have been (clearly) embraced by the community. It's always full of excelent titles, new and rediscovered, and plenty of customers, first timers and faithful. read more

Fabulous women-owned bookstore in Jamaica Plain, selling, as far as I could tell, only new books. Leave plenty of time to browse - the selection of books is wide ranging, and, for a relatively small space, very large and comprehensive. The exterior signage alone is remarkable! Definitely among my favorite bookstores world-wide. I came away with their The Papercuts Anthology: What Happened Here, a collection of poems, essays, and fiction by authors they hosted during their first year (2014) in business. Great bookstore. They pack a LOT into a space that isn't huge but never feels cramped - it's really nicely arranged. The folks who work there are wonderful, and will be delighted to make some excellent book recommendations if you ask. They have a fun selection of gifts and puzzles, too. Bonus points for any visit that includes Penny the shop dog. read more

Good afternoon, I just picked up a book there today, Saturday, September 10th. When I arrived without a mask merely to pick up a book, the lady on duty pointed out the mask guidelines. I think I can read, ma'am; I am frequenting a bookstore. While I would like to patronize a nearby independent business, I think Barnes & Noble where the employees are not living out some weird power dynamic of wanting to tell other people what to do deserves my business henceforth. When approaching the store , I saw the mask sign. I determined that I would stand in the door and ask the person on duty to hand me the book for which I had already paid. I had been going to explain that to the lady at the desk, but she would apparently rather play hallway monitor. The public school system is starved for personnel if she is looking for a new line of work. While the mask guidelines are subjective, fire safety rules are forever: You cannot have one entrance with something blocking it -- in this case, a fire safety screen. Someone probably thought s/he was clever in placing a screen at the entrance, but really, that person should remember that a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds. Please remove the screen from your entrance. I really thought better of and expected better of the people running Papercuts that they would not contravene national safety guidelines. read more

Giving this place four stars because my heart will always be with used books and there are none here. But otherwise, the shop is a fantastic way to shop local; it's small but packs a powerful punch! They also host events including an amazing event with Lindy West who spoke about her recently published collection of essays Shrill. (She's hilarious and also a kick-ass feminist so grab a copy of her book!) I always appreciate when a place has recommendations and Papercuts offers some personal reviews from staff which I'm sure is helpful for those just browsing with no book in mind. And they have totes and cards and other small gifts so a gift certificate here is a good idea for anyone who likes nice things in life. Keeping a small feminist-minded book store open is no easy task so I'm glad Jamaica Plain has this lil' book nook of a store! read more

Randomly came across this gem of a bookstore! Support your local shops and stop in. They curate a wonderful selection, taking time to think of the community and the local needs. Came across authors I had not heard of and books that me and my friend took time to process and evaluate. I didn't know what to expect but found so many gems I purchased two books and have my eye on a few other items as well. The books my friend purchased have been a big influence on her at the moment. All this to say they know what they are doing here. Everything from kids corner to autobiography they have it all. It is a small space so it is filled purposefully. read more

SO happy to have a local bookstore again! Fabulous variety in a relatively small space, plenty of classic literature as well as more contemporary titles. The proprietor ordered two books for me, emailed me when they arrived and, considering the month of snow we all endured, it was easy as pie. Papercuts will be my go-to bookstore from here on in. I've been twice now and just love it. It's so great to have a good bookstore back in JP again. You can see it in people's faces as they shop there. There used to be a bookstore in JP just around the corner, Jamaicaway Books & Gifts (where On Centre gift shop is), but that never really seemed to have a vision nor heart that would draw booklovers. But Papercuts, JP - has both. It's a small space but has a wonderful selection of books within it. There's just this feel and vibe that is a beacon for book lovers like me. The majority of the books I have purchased in the last year have come from this great little book store. It is small, but still feels spacious enough to sit on the couch and browse through some books without being in the way. As I teacher, I applaud their children's books selections and I know I can always find cultural diverse, thought provoking and beautifully illustrated children's books. I'm writing this review especially for my visit today. The owner introduced me to a world of literature I never knew would be so life-changing, and this was before she opened her store. Her recommendations also help me DESTROY my boyfriend when we watch Jeopardy. Kate is brilliant, one of a kind, and a treat for anyone lucky enough to experience what she's created. This was exactly what JP needed. The shop is small but wonderfully curated. I felt like every book had been lovingly selected, presented, and, in some cases, blurbed by the owner, which is a breath of fresh air from the impersonal "3 copies of everything" approach of monolithic, vanilla booksellers like B&N. This isn't a book-hoarder's compendium (thankfully) but a place to reignite your inner book nerd with kindred spirits. Quite unbelievably, JP was lacking a proper bookstore until Papercuts opened up right next to Blue Frog Bakery on Green Street. The space itself is small; perhaps as small a bookstore I've ever seen. That said, I didn't feel cramped or anxious even though there was a handful of people on each of my two visits. (Perhaps this can be attributed to the fact that people actually tend to act decently in bookstores.) It's very warm and comfortable inside and if I was a little less awkward (or rather just more oblivious to social mores) I'd probably see if I could get away with sitting on their couch reading for like...the entire day. The selection seems to have been pretty thoughtfully curated, which is especially important for a shop of this size. Both times I went in, I ended up spending more than I intended. There are a few local crafts for sale too, including ornaments and posters made up of entire texts. I wish I could shut up about this place, and I'm sure my friends feel the same way, but it's just too exciting to finally have a bookstore here and especially one as great as Papercuts. read more

Wonderful bookstore! Friendly, helpful staff. At first glance, it looks like a small, used bookstore - but, In fact, I was pleasantly surprised to see a wide array of new releases. I walked out, happily, with a copy of Anne Tyler's new novel. Much better than ordering it on Amazon. I can start reading it right away AND support a local business in the process. read more

I have in the past made it an effort to stop by this cute local store to buy things and support it. I recently stopped by as a local author to see if they would be interested in discussing an event relative to my book. I viewed this as a way to support the store. However, as soon as the "event director" learned that the book was self-published, she became dismissive said "we don't work with self-published authors." She stopped even making eye contact. My book has sold thousands of copies, been a best-seller on amazon, and has sold hundreds of copies at another independent store that we have worked with. But that aside, I felt that a more open attitude towards a local author would have been nice. I wish them well, but won't be back in. read more

Do not let the small size of this bookstore fool you as they have a carefully curated selection of books. I felt like I wanted to read everything in there. The lady behind the desk was also very knowledgable about the selection and willing to make suggestions based on personal taste. I am looking forward to going back and grabbing a new book, especially now that it is September (Banned Book Month) and they will have a selection of banned books on display. read more

One of those now 'rare 'bookstores where the person working there knows about the works and truly cares about the choices and representations of the authors. I thought I was on top of great finds but I was surprised with a truly interesting, extremely highly rated book! The author had just spoken there recently and I was truly impressed with the level of effort that is involved to curate well written books with current authors. It also feels nice to buy from a bookstore and not just have something shipped online. You are helping a local business that is passionate about what they do, there is more of a connection to how special that book is in this type of scenario. read more
