The wine tasting stations are a great compliment to this eclectic boutique wine store. Craft beers, liquor selection and a limited assortment of wines. I was in and bought one of the wines at the free tasting station. It was good. Many of the wines were new, I'd have to come back to know which taste the buyer prefers. I also didn't speak to the staff for suggestions. The gentlemen at the free wine tasting station described the wines. Wine tasting is fascinating. Every one has a different description of what they taste on their palette and expectations. He said sweet, I thought smooth. He said hardy but I tasted more tannins and earthiness. Obviously the smoother reds are my preference and bolder hardier Reds were his. It's all in the interpretation of meaning when picking a wine store and working with staff to find a new wine. They also have wine tasting stations with machine operated calculated pours. You pay by credit card. It's fun, I've tried it before but not here so I can't tell you if the pour is worth the price. Wall-to-wall bottles, featuring specialty bourbons, couture apertifs and liqueurs, craft beers and maaaaaybe a bottle of wine or two (ok, there's a entire room dedicated), Boston Wine Exchange is definitely a one-stop-fits-all type of booze barn. Do they take advantage of prime(ish) real estate to charge an arm and a leg for Blanton's, Bulleitt or Branca (of the Fernet clan)? No, no they do not. And if you go waltzing in searching for a tough to find bottle of Rombauer they don't currently carry, they'll order it for your grape hole. Case discounts? That too. These guys are hip to the scene, too, throwing down artisan jerky, cheeses, cured meats and pickles for your bar snack repertoire. Kudos for having a whole wall dedicated to trendy cordials and bitter backbones for modern mixologists. I pulled four bottles to toy with, none of which broke the $15 mark. So I was visiting Boston for a few days and I wanted to bring back some east coast beer. Specifically, I wanted some Night Shift...plus whatever was available and good. Unfortunately, I my schedule was rather tight and I didn't have time to grab some bottles at the brewery. Luckily, I was in the area with 20 minutes to kill so I checked yelp and noticed that Boston Wine Exchange had a selection of craft beer. I hurried over in hopes of grabbing snagging a few bottles. The selection was rather respectable. They didn't have anymore warlock (no surprise there) but I did grab several bottles from Night Shift as well as some glassware! Employees were rather nice and helped me make some selections since I was unfamiliar with some of the breweries. Thanks for all the help, btw! What a cute little wine store in an otherwise business high-rise-dominated strip of Downtown Crossing! The store is lovely and cozy, with a fantastic selection of familiar and lesser-known wines from many regions around the world. I was delighted that a local apple iced wine I loved was being featured as a Mother's Day gift! Yay! I have taste! The highlight of the store is definitely the gas chamber section filled with bottles of wine you can taste for free as often as you like. Think of the soft drink dispensers at fast food places....Except it's wine....And you don't have to hold the button down the whole time....And it only dispenses 1-oz. pours at a time. They usually feature 4 whites and 4 reds and because of the chambers, the wine is dispensed at perfect temperatures. My friend and I both fell in love with the featured chardonnay. Chardonnay is my pinot noir a la "Sideways", and this chardonnay from the Sonoma County was delicious, incredibly smoky and, oh yeah, $9.99/bottle! I didn't even discover that last fact until we somewhat drunkenly (hey, it's all-you-can-drink!) started searching for it. What a find! The staff are also incredibly friendly. They put up with my slightly slurred questions and didn't disturb us while we chatted for half an hour while drinking ounce after ounce of wine. How nice is that? I'm definitely a repeat customer. read more

Love this place. Eamon the manager/owner is the most friendly person I have ever met in this industry. He has helped me with lots beer/wine for events and always make sure everything is 100% on point. The place is always spotless and has a great vibe. They carry the best beers in the world and are not to snoodie to have 30 packs. They also have great value on nice sparkling white wines in the fridge. One last thing don't be a ass clown and try to cherry pick from this place it's not going to work. If I owned the store I would not hold or put aside beer for a customer who has never come in and just trying to get their nut over some rare beer. So if you are one of these people who bug the staff at places like this while you try to hunt down these rare beers like you are a fucking hardy boy...don't get but hurt when they don't accommodate you. Bless me Yelp, for I have sinned. It's been over a month since my last review. I offer this one as penance and promise to do better in the future. I can be good, I swear! BWX is amazing, especially given the fun-starved wasteland that is the Financial District. Every time my office hosts happy hour I volunteer to pick up the drinks so I can peruse the well-stocked shelves and dally over lager vs. IPA. The high-end snack selection is excellent as well. They have these delicious tomato-infused crackers my coworkers are obsessed with, and the pre-sliced prosciutto and salami go perfectly with their cheeses. The staff is knowledgeable and happy to assist with recommendations should you need some gentle steering. I wouldn't go anywhere else for my Thirsty Thursday errands. Stay classy, BWX. read more

Pretty solid place to get good wine and spirits at decent prices. I bought two bottles of sparkling wine here for $12 a bottle, which was pretty good. I felt like one of the gentleman there was trying to get me to move up to the next bottle up with fully knowing what I was looking for, which was a sweeter wine for a champagne float in a cocktail. The wine I picked out was perfect for that, so it worked out. Had I been talked into a dryer wine, I probably wouldn't have been as pumped up about my cocktails. I also bought a growler of Opa Opa Watermelon lager. The beer on the top wasn't very good that ended up in the first glass, and then the rest was fine. I dunno what caused that, but I can only assume that it wasn't fresh. I didn't think of the repercussions of buying watermelon flavored lager in the beginning of October very thoroughly. For $8.50 a growler, plus deposit, it's pretty easy on the wallet. I'll definitely be back, seeing as I work nearby and enjoy a delicious beverage now and again. read more

BWX used to be great - superb selection and super friendly service. I went in this morning after a couple months gap and was really shocked by the service. A guy who seemed like the owner (wearing a red cap with the old Pats logo) served me and he was brusque to the point of rudeness, and came across as arrogant and like he had better things to be doing than answering questions from customers. I won't be going back. Good selection and reasonable prices are one thing, but when the staff make buying there an unpleasant experience, it simply isn't worth it. What a shame! read more

My experience here was totally disappointing. I was in there for over 15 minutes just wandering around and was never greeted by any of the 4 staff working there. I'm pretty sure eye contact was adverted at least twice. The craft beer selection looked good and I was definitely in the market for a pretty decently priced bottle of wine but I will never give this place a single dime of my money. I highly recommend this shop. It has a great selection of... everything. This is my goto place for beer when I run an event. They have a wide selection of local brewers. They also carry cans of my favorite brands, including the baxter pack. I have attended some of their tastings and always learn a thing or two about wine, hard liqour, and the local distilleries/brewwers. read more

However they have an awesome collection of beer-including many bottle fermented beers (which are very fun to drink of course...) I don't understand why the small CVS stores in the financial district of Boston don't carry beer. Maybe I am going to the wrong CVS? Maybe I should go to a bigger one? Or do they just not carry beer? I finally found this wine and beer store. The selection is fantastic. I even managed to find a bottle of Riesling that I had not been able to find in a lot of wine stores in NYC. I bought it, of course. Prices are not bad, its a few dollars more than some cheaper wine stores. The beer selection is amazeballs. They also have some whiskeys. I was made aware of Boston Wine Exchange from a BuyWithMe.com promotion (that ended up being rescinded do to legal technicalities...but so be it)...and found out it was literally around the corner from my office. I stopped by one day at lunch to investigate their selection of South African wines (a specific inquiry...but I had just returned from a trip to Cape Town). The store was elegant and tastefully appointed (no "cardboard cases of $5.99 sale bottles at the end of aisles" as you might find in the local package store)...small, but it felt approachable. The selection seemed refined...and while I didn't receive any help (I didn't ask for any), the staff seemed to be readilly helping other patrons. The wines I looked at seemed interesting and really well-priced. Additionally, they seem to have a good selection of single malts and some interesting micro-brews. All in all, i'm pretty happy this place is right next door to my office...I look forward to heading back. read more

I stopped in to check this place out back when it first opened and they didn't even have all their stock on display. I was very impressed just by the concept, the layout and, most of all, the location. It doesn't get much more "downtown" than Devonshire St in the middle of the financial district. The wine selection has a good mix of domestic, European, South American and Australian reds. I never look at the whites much, so I can't comment on that. There's a large beer cooler with all your standard beers available cold. More impressive was the large selection of craft and artisan big bottle singles, which I've been getting more and more into lately. I noticed a cool "wine tap" thing in the back set up for tastings. I'm disappointed I haven't made it to one yet, but I plan to this season. Lots of very top shelf spirits available at what appear to be very competitive prices. In fact, all their prices are exceptional, in my opinion, given the small size and location of the store. These guys are clearly hooked up. Lastly, the staff has always been very helpful. Eamon Keating took my request for a special order and he got back to me promptly. He was able to get what I needed at a reasonable cost. Well done. Amazing place. I let the guy working pick out 6 different wines for me and I have LOVED them all. I'm so impressed. He actually listened to what I like and don't like and really knew the wines at the store. Also, I had the beer guy pick out two different random beers for my boyfriend and he loved both of them as well. Staff is super nice and super knowledgable. The guys who work there were really cool and I ended up hanging out and just talking with them about walking dead and game of thrones for a little while. Great place!! What an incredible find! I live nearby, and it's taken me far too long to stop by and check what BWE is all about. Finally popped in today, and was so impressed. Wine selection is fantastic - stuff I can normally only find online was here, and prices are competitive. But what blew me away was the BEER SELECTION. Holy crap do they have an outstanding array of options! Dale's, Delirium, Pretty Things, Karmeliet, ... I can go on and on. I need to go back and check out the pumpkin ale that's the best in the whole world :) I will definitely be back in to make many a purchase! read more

I work practically across the street from this wine shop. It is not your ordinary packy. As others have stated, and I agree that this store is lovely and cozy, with a fantastic selection of familiar and lesser-known wines from many regions around the world. You press a button, wine comes out at a perfect temperature. They are also not limited to wine. I bought an incredible vanilla infused vodka that is out of this world from a local distillery. Love this place. I work across the street and was given the corporate card tonight to buy some beer and wine for tonight's office decorating extravaganza. They have an excellent selection of wine (though I only bought two bottles, since we're more of a beer crowd) and the beer selection is top notch as well. I was pleasantly surprised to see Abita in stock here, which I haven't seen elsewhere around the city. Staff was friendly and very helpful with suggestions. The prices are also very reasonable - 3 12-pack bottles of beer, 2 4-packs of Mike's "Harder" lemonade (oops?), and 2 bottles of wine for just about $90. read more

Stopped in here last night. Place has a pretty good selection of craft beers, but in and out of the coolers. I was happy to see a few brews I haven't seen before, and I get around, but I don't like how there were two people playing along with Jeopardy while I was standing looking around for 15 minutes. No, I don't like being bothered all the time when picking out my beverage choice, but its a little different when I'm doing laps, and even more when I'm at the counter asking you about the selection. This little gem of a store has been a life saver for the Craft Beer lover that doesn't live in Somerville or Brighton or have a car. I go here for all my craft beer needs, since my local Kappy's cannot fufill them. Eamon has special ordered things for me. They have a mailing list and tons of special events that you can go to. Wine Tastings, Beer Tastings. They sell wine and liquor as well. I've never bought any actually, but I am sure they'd be able to help you with that. It's super close to where I work and they'll even send a bike courier to you with an order. I also enjoy that they have TV's in store, you can catch a bit of the game while you shop. As the star rating claims, I am a fan. Check it out, I bet they have what you are looking for. Chris is a star beer buyer, just ask him and he will tell you. Great brown liquor and craft brews selection. The get a good amount of stuff that you don't see many places in the bourbon, rye, whiskey family. They have craft brews that will keep you interested for awhile. They also have a good wine selection ranging from the $10 under rack to the pricey stuff, all organized by varietal. Service is great and Emon & staff are willing to help find something specific. The prices are reasonable too! Lastly, all of the tastings and various "perks" of going there are nice. If you are working downtown, and you get one of those days where you just cant seem to get it right, this is the place that will instantly brighten your day on your way home... I'm a beer guy, and they have real goo selection of stuff in here. From Alagash, to PBR, to Laguantis to Grolsh... for christ sakes, GROLSH! I think you can only buy that stuff in like 6 bars in Boston, and one recently went under... Overall, they have an excellent selection of beer, and more surprisingly about this place, is that it doesn't cost you a small fortune for it either. That alone, I think is the best part about this place. I mean, they aren't catering towards the residential folks at all, b/c literally nobody lives in the financial district, and its location is prime time downtown. I just assume its all business folks that come in for beers for the office or people heading home sort of thing, so I don't know how they aren't price gouging - but they don't, which is amazing. I can't comment on the wine, but from what it looks like, they have a whole ton of stuff. They even have some sort of whine and cheese thing off to the side in the other side of the store. BWX is a great place. Simply put, they have a great selection of beer, wine and spirits, and everything is at a reasonable price. I have special ordered beers a few times, never an issue. They were able to get anything I wanted. They helped select a special bottle of whiskey as well, and seemed knowledgeable. They stock a good selection of import beers, and like I said, ordered me anything they didn't already have. Added bonus, they are right next door to a pub, so you can have a pint before you hit up BWX on your way home. Never a complaint when going here. read more

My fiance and I live right down the street and have been here once before, and the service was great that one time. My fiance just came back from a wine tasting and had a list of wines that he wanted to get, so we thought we'd give BWX a try. Well, this time BWX was a huge disappointment and complete waste of time. Not only did they not have a single wine on our list (which is fine), but service was absolutely horrendous. They had three employees in the shop, two of which were entirely occupied with gossiping about the man's mother the entire time we were in the store. The third one was really pissed off and would only give us extremely short answers. We asked him how the store was organized, and he shot back only, "by country", and walked away. When we found him again 20 minutes later (he was also on the phone), we wanted to know if there were any good replacements for any of the wines on our list in the store. He looked at the first line on the list, walked us to a prosecco, and left to be on the phone again. When he came back, my fiance asked him if there were any important differences between the prosecco he recommended and our wine, to which he replied, "this one is drier", and walked away again. No shit, the bottle said "extra dry" on it, tell me something we don't know? When we were checking out, my fiance showed his ID, but I had left mine at home by accident. Shitty-attitude guy gives us the "sorry, it's the law speech" and squints. Since we live 2 minutes away, I would have been happy to run back and grab it, but at this time I've had enough of the shitty service and we just decided to leave. This will definitely be our last visit. Whoever worked there on the 4th don't know anything about their wine, and they need some serious work on their attitudes. Maybe they're all hating their lives because they have to work on a holiday, but don't take it out on the customers. I'm not a big beer drinker, so I can't comment on their beers, but the general wine selection there is not impressive and pretty pricey compared to other places in Boston. Come here if you know exactly what you want, absolutely need to get something in the middle of the financial district, and expect shitty service and disappointment. read more

Came in here to grab a chianti on my way home, and was really impressed with the beer selection! I wish I had more time to browse. I was able to get a nice unoaked chianti for about $9 which is not bad at all for this area. I saw behind the counter they carry a lot of local liquor brands as well, which I adore. Many others expressed employees jumping to help them but although several employees were around, no one approached me. I just happened to find what I was looking for right off the bat. This is the worst review that I have ever given a vendor. It was unresolvable because the owner was not only rude but made false accusations as well. As someone who works with caterers of all types from all places and all walks of life on a regular basis, BMX is by far the absolute worst in customer service. A month ago, I placed an order (actually two orders in the same week) and everything seemed fine and everything was received. There was a misunderstanding during the delivery because I thought there was more product than I ordered and I called the owner/manager and everything was straightened out immediately. At least so I thought. Yesterday, I called to place an order and I dealt with a psycho b*tch from hell, making sure I couldn't order from BWX because there was no delivery available for today or tomorrow, who appeared extremely volatile and not answering the telephone would have been more cordial. When I asked for the owner, the saleswoman was even more crude in her response as well. Today, the owner called screaming at me like a girl, really nasty, practically not allowing me to speak, insulting and insisting that we (my coworker and I) was rude to his delivery person when he came up last month. (That's a total lie!) We don't treat our vendors poorly. I received deliveries from vendors everyday, all day long! Do you really think I would still be here if I mistreated people. I am the first point of contact for goodness sakes. I take pride in the relationships that I have with the vendors that I am in contact with, as there are many, and even the ones I have worked with in the past. To the owner: Your delivery guy was fine and there was no issues with him and we didn't treat him poorly. The issue is with your saleswoman and you this week. You both were rude to me and that's not acceptable. Happy people don't treat people poorly. No, you're not the only vendor in town. I believe are in business to make money (correct?) but by scowling false accusations and treating customers wrongfully, your business will soon be closed. It's too bad, because it's a beautiful store but the negative energy isn't worth the experience. Remember the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld? This was worse. Amazing craft beer selections and interesting spirits. What sealed the deal for me was that we found Andechs beer (Kloster Andechs from Munich) here and have never seen it in the U.S. We ended up buying a variety of different beers. It was worth the trip to Boston just for BWE! read more
