Five star restaurant all around. The food is fantastic. We had the eye fillet and Tahitian tuna. The fillet was pristinely made. I chose to have it without any sauce and it was flavorful and soft. The tuna was noticeably fresh. It was served without any sauce as well which speaks to it's natural flavor. The surrounding beauty of Lake Wakatipu and the superb service from the waitstaff were icing on the cake. read more

Came in to celebrate our honeymoon and we're ready to splurge on a nice dinner. Unfortunately almost 20 minutes went by with no waitress or waiter stopping by to take our drink order and we watched the same waitress discuss the specials with a party of two directly next to us and then a party of 8 behind us who had just sat down. Still no one came over to talk to us about specials or ask us if we needed anything. Really dissappointing since I had read the reviews on here before we went about being discriminated against because of age. We decided to still give it a try dispite the few negative reviews and ended up getting up and walking out. read more

I don't understand hat the big deal is. We arrived 10 minutes before our reservation at 8:30. We were asked to sit at the bar while our table freed up. The hostess had just sat three couples that were walk ins before us. We waited 10 minutes to be sat at what was obviously a makeshift table which they actually used two lounge chairs that belong in a cigar bar. Worst part, we were sat around 3 and a half feet from the hostess stand so every time someone walked up to the hostess we had people's derrières in our face as we were trying to enjoy our dinner. Not to mention the traffic. Maybe we would have gotten a better table if they actually cared about their reservations instead of making it first come first serve. There were many tables after us who waited at the bar for twenty minutes a half hour, again, due to the walk ins (easy to overhear all this with our proximity to the hostess stand). Food and service was mediocre. Why not just scratch reservations for anything less than a four top like a lot of "quality" restaurants do. Perhaps Botswana just isn't quality. read more

Hands down favorite place to eat in Queenstown. I've experience a private dinner as well as lunch here. The staff is super professional and knowledgeable; they even talked me into a certain dish and it turned out to be amazing. I suggest any bottle of wine, the hogs head (on the starter menu), Mac n cheese, the duck, and lastly the creme brûlée. You really can't go wrong here. read more

A decent place with decent food. A little overpriced and hectic.

After our airplane trip out to Milford Sound, we asked our pilot where we should go for dinner (we mentioned we loved Rata as a reference for him to point us toward someplace that would suit our taste)- he recommended Botswana Butchery. The location is lovely, with a patio and a view of the lake, but the menu is so overpriced. We don't mind paying for a nice meal, however overpriced food really irritates me. The beet salad I had for a starter was OK, and my main course (white fish) was not memorable. Rata is a far better value for your money and will knock your socks off if you're a foodie like me. read more

We were disappointed by Botswana Butchery, a restaurant that failed to live up to its alluring name. We thought: How often do you come across a restaurant that apparently serves Botswana cuisine? I had reviewed the menus online, and while they seemed surprisingly conventional I still was expecting the dishes to be more adventurous and exotic. Instead, it was all very mainstream for New Zealand -- and overpriced. For the money, we would have expected a more out-of-this-world experience, and certainly larger portions than the rather skimpy ones put in front of us. But the service was excellent and very attentive, and we appreciated the nice table we were given, in the front window. read more

The host refused to seat us, claiming all tables were reserved. There were at least five open tables. The place is not big. We came back an hour later after eating somewhere else. Even more tables were empty at this point. We feel that we were judged based on our appearance. We do not recommend this restaurant based on the way we were treated, despite what the food may taste like. read more

My husband and I were in Queenstown for six days. We ate at this fabulous place seven times. Beautiful location, perfect service, amazing food. The menu has something for everyone. When we think of our time on the south island, this is one of our favorite memories. When the weather is nice, it is very pleasurable to dine and watch all of the interesting creative things going on at the beach. read more

Absolutely worth going to Botswana Butchery. The food was 5 out of 5 and the service was 6 out of 5. Despite not booking prior the staff found us a table and were extremely friendly and efficient. The food and service at Botswana are excellent. The ambiance and decor are also very nice. It is a warm and welcoming place. Unfortunately the portions are very small and the prices very high. For example, the cheapest glass of red wine was $24 NZD. I left hungry and spent a lot of money. read more

My boyfriend and I decided to come here on a Saturday night. We were open to sitting outside even though it was freezing out just to get in because we'd heard such good things about the restaurant. We got seated instantly and got some wine, placed her order, but then it took a full hour to get our food. The food was great but the wait outside in the freezing cold, having to put blankets over us, with three other tables getting seated after us and finished before we got our food just put such a negative taste in our mouth. Had a very positive experience with my three companions. Loved the lamb rack and experienced my best meal in NZ.

The interior of the restaurant is comfortable and beautiful, plus the food and service were excellent. My recommendations: the rabbit stew and whitebait starter are a MUST try as they were unique and tasted so good. We had the ribeye, lamb T-bone (special), stuffed mushrooms and duck fat potatoes. Meat came in large portions and was cooked just perfect. Although sides were pretty tasty they weren't as high on my list as the meat & starters. I would definitely go again to try other unique items on the menu. read more

Botswana Butchery had been recommended independently by several of my Kiwi friends when they heard we going to Queenstown. Their recos were completely on the mark. Botswana Butchery is an elite restaurant at the global level and I've eaten at hundreds of them all over to know. We are a family including 4 kids. They have eaten in many good restaurants so we know how to keep them engaged and they generally are pretty well behaved. But I was cautious about BB given its highbrow reputation and overall fanciness. When I called, the hostess could not have been more welcoming and that extended to when we arrived. The staff overall was first rate with no hiccups. There is no children's menu (which was explained to me when I called), but we found the side dishes and appetizers made great choices (it helps that our kids are good and adventuresome eaters - if yours are not, perhaps BB is not for you). Across the 5 of us who ordered full meals we got two rabbits, one fillet mignon, one high country lamb (the best dish by far - a global standout!), and tuna. I also highly recommend the shaved Puau appetizer - just wonderful. Wine list was comprehensive with a decent selection of NZ choices: we had a lovely Newton Forrest cab sav. If you have a chance, wander upstairs and check out all the little private dining rooms. read more

Nice fancy place. Expect small portions that are over priced but the service makes up for it. The others on our table shared plates but ended getting a smaller portion than expected. For me on the other hand shared the lamb shank for 2 and it was more than enough food for us. We don't normally have lamb so we needed to get it someplace where they are known to have lamb everywhere. read more

Terrific. Snails to start were very nice. Aged Scotch fillet was very tasty. Rabbit was just right. Slow roasted lamb shoulder was the tops. Sides were tasty and just the right portion - duck roasted potatoes, cauliflower & cheese pancetta, and Mac n cheese. Great wine choices. read more
