Now a regular, once every other week I gotta have my zaatar fix. So the generous stars given here are for the zaatar item only as I tried their other products (except the sweets) and found them to be decent, nothing disappointing. I would pick up any other item from their menu if I'm not feeling particularly choosy that day. It'll do the trick. According to my tastebuds, they take the crown for the zaatar pizza. Delicious dough, the right thickness and size but most importantly the zaatar mix itself. That right amount of sumac and perhaps other ingredients are used which dictates my judgment for this food. A warning tho, you have to advise them not to crisp your pizzas. If you don't like them well done, just ask them not to do so or otherwise they will. Looks like it's their standard way of baking the zaatar. Not for me, I don't like my zaatar slightly burnt. I tried almost all other well known bakeries in Laval and Montreal that sell zaatar along with other similar Lebanese/Syrian specialties and the closest one that comes to Najah's zaatar is the hole in the wall Arax bakery on Samson street. A runner up worth giving a try also. As for their sweets.... hmmm, I personally don't come to these type of bakeries for sweets. It's not their main specialty so it could be a hit or miss taste experience and also, freshness will play a major role. Throughout my numerous visits there, I haven't witnessed not even once anyone ordering baklavas and this is a busy bakery, specially on weekends.

I've ordered sandwiches, tried their pizzas, devoured their biscottis, gorged myself with their dessert pastries, etc. But the cheese Danish I got this morning was beyond amazing. The light pastry was filled with a cheese mixture that probably had some ricotta in it. Superb! The store has a variety of pastas, coffees, and other imported Italian goodies. Best of all, the counter folks are courteous, helpful. and friendly. Easy to get to from other parts of the city. The 104 and 90 bus both stop at Upper Lachine and Melrose. Their sweets counter would rival any of the Italian bakeries in the city. Mima and her staff are friendly and always accommodating. Let me start by saying that, as I was approaching it, I was thrown off by the fact that they have moved into the ground floor of one of those blocky modern condo or apartment buildings one sees all over Montreal, and even all over the U.S. They are now on the south side of Jean-Talon, near the D'Iberville Metro station. I had two pastries. They were very good, as can be expected. The spinach puff was a little dry, perhaps because it was later in the day. Now, I cannot say anything bad about the pizza because it was "day old" and deeply discounted. It was 99 cents in Canadian coin! In American coin, that would be 75 to 80 cents, so eat the slice of pizza and shut up, right? They were crowded. The service was reasonably good. They are keeping the line on their prices, which I'm sure their clientele appreciates. For me to assess the fairness of that, I have to divide by 1.27 or something like that. They pass the test! I now have to dial up my pedantic aspect to update you on the meaning of "conca d'oro." More so than a "pot of gold," it means a "golden conch." I learned this because Palermo, Sicily's capital, sits in a small planar area hemmed in by hilly terrain, shaped like a horseshoe, and extending out to the sea. So, Palermo, and some of its adjacent cities, are said to sit in "la Conca d'Oro," or the "golden conch." I would still go back to this locale without hesitation. The issue is that, since bakeries tend to feature 20 to 40 things in the glass case, and you may pick out 2 or 3, you may not be picking out the ones that may be the most stellar to you. That means you need to keep going back and trying the other ones! Sadly, I live too far away to do this. Ma io ritornero'. Mais je retorunerai.

There was a line outside when we got there which is a sure sign this is a popular place. It moved pretty quickly and we waited no more than 10 minutes. They have a very good variety of pastries and cakes, even some sandwiches and cold pizzas! We went specifically for the zeppole which are only sold around Easter time and the cannoli which are available all year. The zeppole come in many different flavours and are so delicious, the ricotta filling is amazing. I really liked the Nutella one, the flavour wasn't too overpowering. The cannoli were also amazing, we had the regular and the pistachio ones (which are just the regular ones with pistachio bits at the edges). The prices are pretty good too especially if you order 6 or more!

It was cooked perfectly. I also tried the cheese & sujuk, and it was just as good. It was made fresh to order, and what I liked most was that the cheese wasn't too salty and didn't slide off the dough, it held its shape nicely. You can order them individually in regular or large sizes and there's also an option to get a box of 6 pieces. There is indoor seating, but it's limited to about 6-7 people. They also offer sweets like baklava, which you can order as well. The service was super friendly, and overall it was a great experience. I'll definitely come back to this shop the next time I'm in the area.

Finally there are the puffy Paczki (ponki as they call it here) and there are 4 flavors when I went: cherry, apple, cream and the traditional favorite, plum flavor which is glazed. They had about 3 chairs inside the restaurant and about 6 chairs outside the restaurant, and the staff of two were nice and helpful. They also had perogies, which I'll probably go back and try. I think i'd frequent this place if I lived in that Monkland/Sherbrooke - NDG area.
