Definitely the best place in Boulder to buy or sell gear. I discovered BSR about a year ago and since then have bought and consigned lots of stuff there. When I take my old things there to put on consignment they are incredibly fair on the pricing and the people who work there are always friendly, knowledgeable, patient with me, and make it easy/enjoyable to do business with them. It's definitely the first place I go to shop for anything that's outdoor gear related. If you check out their website (that they frequently update) they list all of the different types of things that they are currently looking for people to bring in and put on consignment and you can check out some of the things that are for sale. A bonus for me is that they keep me out of the large/overpriced corporate outdoor gear stores plus I never have to deal with the hassle of listing things on Craigslist/Facebook Market Place and all the hassles that go along with that process. This is such a cool place, and hugely important in a place like Boulder. It's also a non-profit! They recently expanded so it feels much less cramped. My family loves this place! My sister and her friends found it, and we have continuously pointed people in their direction because we have always had a good experience. They have such a wide variety of outdoor resources and gear. The part that my family loves most is that nothing is price-gauged. The outdoor industry can be inaccessible due to financial reasons, but this place makes it much more realistic for the majority. All of the workers are very kind, helpful, and nice to talk to. I came here on my first visit to Colorado during a month-long road trip in May, and instantly fell in love with this sweet outdoor shop. I live in Denver, so the Wilderness Exchange store is much closer - but BSR takes the cake tenfold. On my first visit I snagged a great plum Patagonia members only jacket for only $26, which I wore for the remainder of the trip. My travel mate scored a barely-used climbing helmet for dirt cheap. During my return visit, I kicked things up a notch and walked away with another great, and much more heavy duty winter jacket from Patagonia for only $48, a sweet old percolator for $6, and a (not used) pair of pink wool socks for $12. Every item in the store is quality, and they have everything from bikes, snowboards, and climbing shoes to ski bibs, guide books, and yoga pants. They have great deals on everything outdoorsy imaginable, ranging from camping supplies to warm weather gear, all the way to road bike and kayaks. They have great deals that allow customers to reuse perfectly good equipment at a fraction of the cost that they can find it anywhere else. Has items that you never thought you would ever need until you see them in front of you for a great deal. I was told about it from a friend to check out before I made a large purchase, and I found exactly what I needed for 30% less, with only slight use. A similar resale store in Denver, FERAL, has you put all your stuff in a bin, they go through it, name the prices, then you decide if it works for you; if it doesn't you get it back along with anything else they reject--a clear, upfront system. I haven't had any problems with them, in fact, I'm impressed at how friendly, open, and responsive regarding clarity on consignment while being easy going and fun. The BSR staff apparently runs a mob mentality, without independent thinker (Adam and Mick's girlfriend, possibly being the exceptions). The employees seem to pose this air of cool and easy going, while they are actually quite stressed out, seem to be all burn outs, and actually aren't that cool at all, but harness pretty heavy emotional baggage that they lug around like an 80 liter backpack stuffed full of resale gear ready to unload on you like you were some cheep porter, while they slack in the back, toke and chug coffee to get through the days, doing the minimum and becoming quite irritated when asked for anything out of the ordinary, and even more so when held accountable. If you consign at BSR here's my recommendation-- 1)First--DON'T--take your business somewhere else. Don't support Boulder snobbery and snootiness even if its well masked with long hair, beards, Paty wear, and 420 vibes--consider selling on line on one of these gear forums (Craigslist, Facebook--Colorado Outdoor Gear Exchange, Colorado Outdoor Gear Swap, Colorado Camping/Backpacking/Hiking Gear swap and sale, *Colorado* Climbing Gear Exchange, Boulder Gear Exchange, Boulder: Buy, Sell, Trade, Boulder/Weld County Buy and Sell, Geartrade.com, Barefoot's Hiking Gear Flea Market, Barefoot's Hiking Gear Flea Market Banned) sell to Play-it-again Sports, Plato's Closet, Angle's Sport Exchange in Boulder. Check Feral or Wilderness Exchange in Denver, or check out this list of best consignment places to buy and sell your gear at (Denver gear consignment and sales) 2) Repair / modify your gear by a repair technician or learn how to do it yourself (PM me for both or contact another local gear repair person). 3) If you do end up consigning at BSR--take pictures and make an itemized list of what the BSR staff accepts for consignment. 4) Send them an e-mail with that info, and make it clear that anything they reject you want back and you will come and pick it up and NOT to dump it in the "Free Bin" unless you want them to--don't expect any communication back from them by email or phone, they don't seem to do that. 5) Track your consignment items once it's on the sales floor--I've had a bunch of stuff stolen, or "misplaced" that I had to dig all around the store to discover it was missing, with the staff that griped and groaned when asked for help to find something I couldn't find. If you don't follow up, items appear to exceed the consignment period in their system, never being purchased, and gets "donated." BSR then kindly credited me for those lost/stolen items--props to them for that at least. 6)If you want a certain price on it, tell them in the e-mail, and expect that it might get rejected if its slightly too high for them. 7)Don't take as much "BS" from BSR as I did. Okay, I had several people warn me about the awful customer service here, and boy they were right. I came here looking for climbing shoes and was very unsuccessful. Despite their snarky sign asking customers to put shoes back into the right cubby, many of the shoes were in the wrong spots so I struggled to find anything that fit. I spent a good 15-20 minutes checking out the shoes and was never greeted or offered assistance. We consigned an item here, and we did not have luck selling it. We only waited a month and a half, and lowered the price once. Since it was a high end item, we decided not leave it longer and brought it home. When you consign an item at Boulder Sports, they will not call you when it sells, so you must call them to find out the item's status. They give you an account number and you have to have it to get any information on whether it was sold. They will not give a discount either if a buyer comes in and asks for one. The price is set in stone. It is a busy place. Shoes seem to be the top seller. Staff was informative, but not overly friendly. All in all, our item didn't sell, but it was worth trying. read more

If you need anything for your sporting missions, go to BSR before you set out to REI or, God forbid BOC, GO TO BSR! They will have what you need for a fraction of the cost. The other side of the coin at BSR is EASY SALES. Awesome gear collecting dust? Bring it in for consignment and get some serious cash, whoo-hoo! They don't buy or take crap. The "Complaints Dept. consists of a Scythe screwed to a board that reads "Complaints Dept." The guys smell of climbing and biking, which is why you can believe they know their stuff! If you like individuality and don't have special needs that are filled by $1200 down jackets and overdone salemenship and just need some quality gear, go to BSR. Ice crampons, carbon fiber road bike, sling bags, hiking boots, paddles, wetsuits, etc. Whenever I need some new gear I check this place out first, the guys here are helpful and the gear is organized well. Bummer to see negative reviews. The staff has always been friendly and helpful. Someone who worked there encouraged me to fix a broken tent pole from the scrap tent poles and took the time to show me how to do it. I spent $2.00 instead of $400 on a new tent. Have found excellent new things there at clearance prices - running packs, new socks, new shorts. Have found lightly used shoes and boots for my kid and myself. Got an excellent pair of $18 road cycling shoes for use at the gym since the cycles have a different pedal there than my bike. Not everything there is awesome - and a lot has been used heavily and looking for one last lap before finding the dumpster. But it is consignment and there are finds. I often just poke my head in to what's newly on the shelf or rack. read more

The idea of this place is great and when we first walked in and saw how much stuff there was, my boyfriend and I got pretty excited. Then it immediately went down hill from there. To start, no one greeted us and almost seemed annoyed we were there. It was very uncomfortable. Then, there was a yelling match in the back between an employee and a customer. The employee was basically saying he wouldn't work on the guy's bike because it wasn't nice enough and would be a waste of materials- The customer yelled "you're F--ing rude!" And he was right.. Then later, as we checked out, I wouldn't even call it customer service. He was the rudest, most arrogant jerk. I couldn't believe the way he was talking/arguing with us. If I wasn't so happy with my find, I would have just left. I hate the fact that I gave them business. It made us both so sour after we left and put a damper on a nice Saturday afternoon. I definitely won't be back and as it turns out, many of my friends have had similar experiences there. Being a bunch of assholes is no way to run a business. You're really not that cool. read more

Yes, BSR has great stuff and the prices are reasonable. But I tend to disagree with the other reviewers that the staff knows their stuff and/or is helpful. Last weekend I was looking for a Nordic set-up and not only did the staff member say he didn't have a clue about the gear, he also didn't even give an inkling that he might want to help me with anything. I've been consigning sports gear at Boulder Sports Recycler for over 10 years. They know their stuff, and know what will sell. As a result, they are pretty selective about what they take on consignment. But that means that buyers get good quality equipment, and your equipment is highly likely to sell (they are at 95%+ range on selling items I have consigned over the years). Recommended! read more

I really wanted to like this place. It's not play it again sports, they give you a good amount on consignment gear and the selection is large. The downside: most of the gear is beaten into the ground. Even though the staff yells at people that bring in sub-par gear, I don't mind their customer service, there's one nice guy working there.. I witnessed a poor guy get turned away and told to take his "garbage" to Goodwill last time though. When I spend good money on a pack that falls apart at the top of the summit I've decided I can't in good conscience give these guys any more $. Everyone I bring there feels super uncomfortable around the staff and has not returned. Cheer up over there, you play with toys and drink beer all day! read more

Just think of how many climbers skiers snowboarders hikers backpackers and bikers there are in the most outdoorsy city in the nation. All of them bring their used gear here! This is a used gear shop, they keep no inventory, they won't hold your hand while you shop and push you to make a sale. If you want a salesman educating you on every little senseless detail, go to REI or Neptune and pay full price for a shiny new product you'll scratch up your first time using it. The staff at BSR is more likely to tell you, "this is a great deal" or "I don't know too many details about this specific backpack, but I have a friend who has it and loves it". If know what you're looking for and are willing to do a bit of research before you walk in the store, BSR can't be beat. I recently bought a pair of almost new $235 crampons for $70 and a pair of almost new $475 mountaineering boots for just $170. If you think this place is too good to be true, just stop by! I had a bad experience at this place yesterday and will never go back. The people working there were not exactly friendly, then charged me $8 for a book with a $6 price marked on it.
