I first started out with the 10 time punch card which waived the registration fee to become a member - in which I now am one! Being a competitive person, I was discouraged when I first started bouldering and could not finish a route. This is where bouldering teaches you the valuable lesson to not give up and to keep trying. You can get an all day pass and go in and out as much as you want, plus they have a standard gym inside. I've climbed in many great gyms in the US, including bkb (Chicago and Brooklyn), Seattle Bouldering project, planet granite, etc. Abp is definitely top notch western gold quality in terms of facilities, walls, and route setting. To top it all off, the gym is incredibly affordable, especially when compared to the west and east coast gyms. Would definitely be a member if I lived in the Austin area. read more

Had a great time today with our family. It was my first time here, we were given a quick tour then were off to bouldering. All of the rock climbing is color coded so you know what to look for. Some were challenging and some were easy. It was great to see my nephew struggle with some but he kept at it and conquered the course. Highly recommend! read more

Socks blown off! From the spacious, well thought design to the friendly and helpful employees everything about ABP is amazing. I brought my son here to celebrate his 5th birthday and to try something new. We didn't know anything about bouldering but were instantly hooked and having fun. There's a huge space in the back dedicated to kids and parents, I even saw small toddlers climbing. Theres about 28" thick padding on the ground, so in case of a fall they'll be pretty cushioned. Its definitely got a modern, industrial feel but still warm and super bright with sunlight. Heads up, fill out the waiver online, it'll save you time in line when you arrive. read more

I have never been a climber, but I have friends in the area who love to climb so I tagged along. The first time I went, I thought, 'This could get addicting,' so I signed up for a membership then and there. While the climbing is fun and you should try it even if you have not climbed before, the access to yoga and a huge gym, as well as classes and an upstairs cafe area is worth the monthly fee. Besides the amenities, the staff is always helpful and friendly and they keep the place clean. read more

My cousins and I only came to visit my best friend in Austin for a 3 day weekend, and we came back to ABP TWICE. That's how much fun this place is! I'm still a complete noob at rock climbing, and I had only just started learning the tricks and the skills of bouldering, so I was a little intimidated when we first came in and the WHOLE gym was just bouldering. Nevertheless, I had a blast! Some of the routes were much, much easier than others and I felt SUPER accomplished when I climbed to the very top of one and got to take one of those super cool pictures that makes me look sporty and athletic and a badass climber. This is a great place to get a work out in, practice trust exercises with your friends, and learn how to climb a wall :-) P.S. IF YOU'RE A STUDENT, FLASH YOUR ID! They give out student discounts! DO. NOT. BRING. YOUR. DOGS. HERE. I work in the same complex as ABP and bring my dog to work daily, therefore I walk my dog around this area all the time. However last week the rusted metal grated stairs ripped my dog's claws out and sent her into shock. ABP pretends to be dog-friendly/accommodating with their water bowls out front, however, their establishment is simply not safe for animals whatsoever. I spoke to the supervisor about putting wood over their stairs to prevent injuries, but a week later nothing has been done, so I'm leaving this review to spare other dogs and their owners. Climbers, don't bring your dogs, don't tie them up outside. Your dog is better off at home, I promise. My dog is now terrified of going over to the ABP area in the complex, which is unfortunate because our building is right next door. read more

This is my gym and I'll never find another I like as much. I have always been nervous about gyms, because I'm not super familiar with weights and don't want to embarrass myself. ABP makes it amazingly easy to become involved in any part of their gym. All day there are yoga and fitness classes on the schedule so if you prefer to be led, there's a class for that! They also have cardio equipment, weights, a sauna, and of course the massive bouldering gym. The routes are of all skill levels so you have access to a wide range of problems. It can be busy at peak times, but coming during non-peak hours saves me the headache of having to wait for a parking spot. As a member I can bring two newbies to the gym free a month, take any of the classes and come and go as much as I like. It's super flexible and great value for the price! Also a really fun night out with friends that doesn't revolving around drinking! read more

I wish I would have joined sooner. This really is an amazing gym. The atmosphere they've created is very comfortable and chill, that I've made this my new daily study spot. There are people at every ability level helping each other figure out the best route up the problems (that's what the individual color-coded climbing routes are called, which I learned thanks to another climber I didn't know before last night). Austin Bouldering Project sets a new standard for not only rock gyms, but fitness centers in general. It has great, well-maintained equipment, friendly staff, reasonable prices and engaging classes. The cool thing about ABP is that it's not a rock gym with some half-assed yoga classes and fitness classes thrown on the side, or a few dust-covered free weights that constitute as a 'lifting' area. Instead ABP has world-class bouldering areas, fantastic yoga classes taught by well-trained and experienced teachers, challenging fitness classes and a really top-notch lifting gym. The bouldering area is incredible. I've been to a handful of gyms over the US including SenderOne and I truly believe ABP to have some of the finest indoor bouldering. The routes are changed frequently and the levels are challenging but realistic. They also set the routes so that different levels have different skills. For example at NARG, they only time we could practice like, really crimpy routes or slopey routes was on really HARD routes. That sucked! Because then if one of those skills was thrown into a moderate route there was no basis of that skill there. At ABP there are easier slopey routes to introduce newer climbers (or climbers who avoid slopey routes) to this skill before it is needed in a harder route, I love this. I think this kind of accessibility for all levels adds to a very supportive environment. It's easy for rock gyms and lifting gyms too to be steeped in a heavy dose of testosterone and ego. I have NEVER felt this at ABP. While climbing, deadlifting or attempting a fitness class, I truly feel supported. It's the one loser who is being cocky who stands out, not the newbie. This is brilliant because it makes new guests feel at home right away. I always love bringing my friends here. The gym keeps everything in really good shape, clean and maintained. Since it's been open there have been changes and progress made. This demonstrates to me that the owners are open to feedback and making the gym a place for the people, not in spite of the people which is awesome. Overall I think this is a really high quality business. I have always loved the activities that ABP offers, but since being able to have a membership I have fallen even more in love climbing, lifting and yoga and advanced my abilities in those areas. read more

Also good variety of difficulty. The amenities are cool. Especially the sauna. Yoga and Crossfit gyms are a bonus. I've taken my 10-year old to the Austin Bouldering Project several times for the Friday night "Parent's Night Out" event. She's had a great time every time, and really bonded with the staff running the event. It's 3 hours of entertainment for the young ones, and free time for parents, for only $10. I have a habit of joining gyms without trying them first so for once I just did a months unlimited so I could try this place out. I've been so impressed! It is such a beautiful facility, you really want to spend all day here. While I know this is a climbing gym and everyone's reviews seem to be climbing related, I have to give some credit where credit is due. The yoga studio and the teachers here are amazing. There are classes all throughout the day. I've been practicing yoga for over 20 years now and I'm pretty particular about who I practice with. The quality of the yoga is pretty amazing and everyone (the teachers specifically) seems happy to be here unlike some other studios I've practiced at. I've not taken a bad class yet which is rare to find. So far I've tried India, Ryan, Matt, Becca, Leilani, Patrick, and Terri and all have been wonderful. You really you have everything you need here. The facility is super clean, love the sauna, the gym equipment is top notch, and you can't beat the price at $68/month unlimited. So I guess I'll be joining next month and that's the long story short. : ) Oh and for those complaining about the parking, park across the street. I've never had a problem finding a spot. There's always tons of available parking on the street if the lots are full. read more

Best bouldering gym I've ever been too. Simply put. It's huge. They have so many routes which change fairly regularly. A ton of different areas and books to explore. The only down fall is that it gets superrrrrr crowded at times and I hate waiting and then when it's my turn getting cut off by someone who doesn't have any manners. Other than that, super cool. First of all, I'm a rock-climbing/bouldering noob. So I was a little intimidated when I heard about this place from my fiancee when she said she wanted to go. We went around 6ish in the evening and parking can be hard to find. There's always street parking near there though. A lot of people during that time since that's when everyone gets out of work and comes here for a work out. As we walked in we were greeted by friendly staff. They weren't condescending to new people they came in and offered us a tour. They were very nice and helpful. Since it was our first time we go a free shoe rental which was a plus. It felt like a giant playground for adults. I thought the walls would be hard but it wasn't too bad. There were ones that were challenging enough even for a novice like myself. Also you don't have to be in the best shape or physique to have fun here. We easily spent an hour and a half here trying out different walls. It didn't feel too crowed either even though there was a good amount of people. It was a great workout as well! I would definitely recommend coming here at least once and take advantage of the free shoe rental. An experience to try! read more

I LOVE THIS GYM. One of the first things I looked for when moving to Austin was an indoor rock climbing gym to join. Two months later and your girl here was officially a member of ABP. Not only that, but I made some great friends along the way. Having hobbies like this in a new city is KEY. Now let me go off on why this place is A-a-a-m-a-z-i-n-g-g-g-g-g. 1) The bouldering. Obviously. There are problems that cater to all levels, which is why I picked this gym over Crux. Not that Crux is bad, but ABP definitely appeals more to beginner climbers. If I were able to do more problems at Crux, I probably would've joined there since it also has top roping. But being able to maneuver my way through a good amount of routes in ABP gives me the confidence to slowly improve my climbing skills. The scaling system here is also different from any climbing gym I've ever been to. Instead of labeling each route with standard markers for V0,V1,V2, it uses a color wheel with overlapping difficulty. My logic for why they do this is to reduce the pissing contest that some climbers strive for and focus instead on self improvement. Falling down on the mats here is also 10x better than the mats at other gyms. The entire floor is lined with it so there's no need to move individual mats to lie directly below you to catch your fall. There are also gray hand grips next to practically every problem to help you in climbing back down. HALLELUYAH! Finally I don't feel like I'm about to die from falling ~15 ft after struggling to reach the top. 2) The lounge area. The entire upstairs area has a significant amount of tables with electrical outlets for doing work and some lounge chairs/benches to chill out and hop onto their WIFI. I come here to study all the time and take breaks to climb or hit up a yoga class. Which brings me to my next point... 3) Yoga and fitness classes. I joined for the climbing, but I may come here more for the yoga classes than anything. There's a few spread out throughout the day for different levels so hopefully one of the classes accommodates your schedule. I always hit up the Vinyasa Level I class because I have no idea what cool tricks they're gonna be pulling in the Level II class. The fitness classes are also no joke. I've only been to one, but I gotta say, it kicked my ass. I'll be back soon for round 2! 3) The fitness center. The fitness center here could be a small gym in its own. A few ellipticals, treadmills, a rowing machine, and a substantial amount of weights and machines that I honestly could not tell you the name of because I only ever hit up the elliptical and treadmill. WIFI reaches here so I just pop in the headphones and turn up Pandora or Netflix and sweat away. 4) Affordable. Not sure the pricing for everyone else but students get a monthly membership for about $60! Totally worth it! The only reason this place gets 4/5 stars is because there is no top roping. Which should be implied in the name of the dang place. Austin Boulderingggggg Project. I've always been one to prefer top roping over bouldering, but this place won me over. This place is so clean, so fun and has everything you need in one box. They have food, rentals, birthday party rooms. I brought my six-year-old with me and he was able to navigate through the gym and was able to find something appropriate for his age. Maybe I'm spoiled? First let me give credit where it's due: The facility was beautiful, brand new with clean design. The bathrooms were luxe, neat, and well-stocked with amenities. Price was great, with free rentals for newcomers, and a free rental chalk bag if any are available. Finally, huge gym with lots of routes. My criticisms are for the bouldering portion only. The place was packed with children. Not bouldering children, the running around and rowdy kind. That made it difficult to focus on climbing since you're constantly battling kids for wall space and worried you'll fall on them. I also found the climbing terrain and routes to be mostly one-dimensional; you go up, you go down. I also disliked their method for labeling route difficulty. Rather than use a v scale like all other bouldering gyms I've visited, they mark difficulty with color, and the colors don't represent an indivdiual V level of difficulty. For example, purple can mean anywhere from V2-V4. I couldn't tell if I was getting better or just doing easier problems! I'd probably come back if I was in the area, but I'd be fully aware of how much I love my home gym while I do it. read more

I have never been rock climbing before and really enjoyed my time here. If I lived nearby I would definitely sign up for a membership. This is a great place to hang out with friends, and get some exercise in an air conditioned space. They offer more than just rock climbing walls. They have a typical work out room with machines, and yoga room. They also have a neat collaboration work area on the second floor. The changing rooms and showers are clean and spacious. They also sell gear and nutritious snacks to re-energize post workout. This is rock climbing without gear. Just a pair of grippy shoes. If you happen to fall, there is a LARGE cushy bouncy mat to fall back onto. It's kind of fun to just jump around on. The rocks are colored differently to show different difficulty levels. They routinely change up the routes. In the center there is a cool rock climbing treadmill that continuously runs and you just keep climbing away. Before you know it your whole body feels worked out and sore. You are just having so much fun you don't even realize you are working out hard at the same time. read more

My bf and I had a good time here. It was our first time going bouldering so we were a little unsure of how to go about it, but the staff was very friendly and informative. It didn't take long for us to get comfortable here! It did take me a while to find a good shoe that fit right, I had to go 2 sizes up. The shoes should fit snug but I felt like my toes were breaking! Lol but aside from that, you get a great exercise! We stuck to the easier routes but were still challenged. I recommend giving this place a try! Oh and remember to bring chalk! My favorite bouldering gym, HANDS DOWN. The staff is incredibly nice and helpful, they have student discounts for memberships (or if you're an inconsistent quitter like me, they also have a 10 visit punch card), AND a super comfortable upstairs area where I've written many a paper after giving up on climbing for the day (because real talk- I'm afraid of heights and honestly am not very good at bouldering). Seriously, the facilities are fantastic. They also have really clean bathrooms (complete with showers, a sauna, lockers, and feminine products). As for the actual bouldering area, I LOVE the thick mats. The first time I realized I could fall from the top of a wall and NOT feel the pain from my body having to absorb the shock was the day I learned I could challenge myself to climb more difficult routes than I ever dared to. They also switch out the routes fairly often, and there are routes for EVERYONE- even fraidy cats like me. I have not popped out any crotch goblins just yet, but they also have a cool-looking kids area. It does get crowded during the evenings and on the weekends though, so plan accordingly if possible. My hands always hurt so good after spending a couple of hours here. read more

I love this place! It is my new second home. In between work, school, and family, I come here to climb, work out, and do homework. I hope to eventually take advantage of the yoga classes as well. In addition to the huge bouldering area, there is a really nice workout area with thick ropes, "hanger boards", pull up bars, stationary bikes, ab workout gear, and a crossfit room. Then there is a dedicated Yoga room, and a birthday party room, and a kids area. I've taken kids here a couple of times and they love it. We are about to sign our son up for their youth after school program. There is even a dry sauna in the locker room. I do have a few issues though: 1. They NEED an intro safety and etiquette class. This is a sister location to the Seattle Bouldering Project, which has a free 30-45 minute class the first time you go. Side note: I hope they will eventually have a full spectrum of classes to help me gain skills and confidence as I get better. An old man like me needs all the help I can get. 2. The pricing is the exact same as Seattle, a town with a 15-20% higher cost of living. It's 30-40% more than the Austin Rock Gym, although definitely much better for people like me, who only want to boulder. There are a variety of memberships - day passes, monthly, yearly, etc. But the way they have it set up, a single student, for example, would have to go 5.6 times a month to make pre-paying annually a better value than buying 10 packs of day passes. I hope I average that many times over the entire year, but it seems unlikely for the vast majority of members. I'm sure they have a ton of money to recoup from such an awesome build-out. Maybe they just won't raise their rates for a really long time. 3. They could use more information about the routes. It takes awhile to figure out the color thing, although they do have information scattered around on cards. I think since they don't give a tour or intro, people wander around figuring it out as they go. Easily solved with #1 above. read more

I heard about this place in the Austin Business Journal and heard it was the largest bouldering facility in the world and was interested in checking it out. I went on a Saturday during most likely peak time and had to park across the street from the lot, but found that once inside it wasn't overly crowded as the place has enough to climb to still keep the crowd thinned out. I filled out the computerized form, got my shoes (free for first visit) and went right to it with my $17 day pass. After asking somebody I realized that the routes color coding indicated their difficulty and they have little cards at the check in booth that let you know what difficulty level corresponds to which color route. While each route can vary (for example a Red route could be in the area of V0-V2) the rating scale is subjective anyway, and different routes are better suited to different climbing styles and body types. But overall you definitely get the sense of them getting more difficult as you jump from yellow, to red, to green to purple and so on up the scale. The nice thing about this set up vs most other gyms who typically mark routes with tape colors by the holds is that everything feels a lot more simply and cleanly laid out. There is a less chaotic look and its much easier to see which holds are on your route which is very helpful when you're struggling to hold on and are trying to find where you can go next. There are plenty of routes for all skill levels, and I found people, both climbers and employees to be helpful with questions and suggestions for how to tackle a particular problem. Not having climbed in a couple years, I of course killed my hands and forearms and was exhausted pretty quickly, but had a lot of fun over the course of 3 hours or so of off and on climbing, resting and watching and never got bored from repetition. I didn't check them out, but it sounds like the locker room / showers are quite nice and there is a spot for climbing specific exercises. Overall a great time in a nice, new and clean facility. I LOVE ABP! I'm from out of state and came to visit for Southwest boulder fest. I already knew how much I liked this place, but they really put on a high energy, RAD event. I had so much fun and was so grateful to be around amazing men and women climbers. I left with drive and inspiration. This place has everything I would dream about in climbing gym.
