This was my favorite restaurant in Ensenada. Cute, outdoor ambience, perfect for date night or a group outing. A hidden gem, away from the more touristy area. I had a super refreshing house margarita and the BEST sangria I've ever had. We weren't too sure about the menu, so our server helped us out and all suggestions were great. Octopus ceviche was very good, not chewy. I can't recall what else we ordered but everything was excellent. The little dog running around going after the bones was adorable too. read more

One of the best steaks I've ever had - I would say #2 or #3. The ribeye was so tender, cooked to perfection, seasoned wonderfully, and melted in my mouth. I'm basically drooling just thinking of it now. The margaritas were very fresh with slices of cucumber in them which added a nice earthy element. The flank steak tacos were loaded with steak and made a great appetizer. My friend had nothing but good things to say about the oysters as well. read more

The ambience felt the Night at the Roxbury...the only thing that was missing was Haddaway's 'What is Love' song playing in the background and the staff doing the head bob. It was that kind of vibe. The menu looks great, and the restaurant was nicely decorated. Made a reservation online for dinner, when we arrived there was no one at the door to help seat customers. After waiting for a while, I made my way to the bar to try to see if I could have someone help me. As I was waiting, a gentleman, who must have been friends with one of the managers, walked in and said he had some extra friends of his who needed a table. After a few bro hugs, they we seated right away. I was finally able to flag down a server to let him know I had a reservation. The floor manager, who was at the bar acknowledge it, and then said to wait at the door and they would attend to us. As we were waiting, people kept coming in going ahead of us, more bro hugs for the servers, and pulling tables that were unoccupied to join their friends at a larger table. After waiting for a while with no one checking on us, we decided to leave. Our reservation was for 8pm, which I read in other comments seems to be their peak hours. Seems like a lot of the local elite of Ensenada begin to just walk in at this time and find someone they know who works there to seat them. Recommend going earlier for dinner, before the Night at the Roxbury crowd arrives. read more

I can safely say we were just served one of the worst meals we have ever eaten and can't believe we paid $40USD for indigestion. The quality of each dish was horribly inconsistent - the risotto was over salted, the fish was overcooked and underwhelming. I wish I had taken a picture of the carnitas "ravioli" which was just a mushy pasta in a bland white sauce covering bits of dried meat. tl;dr The ambience was nice - the service was fine - the "pulpo anchiote" was ok - but the rest of the food was overpriced and terrible. The outside of the place is very low key. But when you walk in, the restaurant is in a big patio and the decoration is very chic. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We were walk in but we got a table immediately. The food is SO GOOD. Highly recommend the Pulpo Taquero. The price is very friendly considering the service, the ambiance and quality of food. Randomly came across this place when we were looking for a place to eat and lounge around Ensenada. We got there and was greeted nicely by the server and the owner. They explained the menu to us since we couldn't understand Spanish. Gave wonderful recommendations as well. The drinks were good and the food as well. It was very light and clean flavors. The salsa were so spicy though so watch out! Such an unexpected gem! The ambiance was very relaxing definitely a nice date place. Would come back here again when I visit Ensenada. read more

Boules is one of the best restaurants I've visited worldwide, and definitely worth the drive down from San Diego. The owner, Javier Martinez Garza, is an incredible host and creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Whether a first time visitor or local regular, you're treated like family. The food is absolutely amazing, with an eclectic farm to table menu of great meats, seafood, and vegetarian options. Boules also offers an amazing selection of local Valle de Guadalupe wines, along with a full bar of anything and everything one could want. It is a must-visit restaurant. Boules was phenomenal. I'm vegetarian and my fiance is not, and both of us can't wait to return to this restaurant in June. There were so many vegetarian options - 3 different risottos and 3 or 4 pasta dishes. I had the huitlacoche risotto and couldn't stop eating. Lovely and relaxing, certainly not a typical touristy restaurant in Ensenada. It is very quiet, almost completely outdoors and nestled between two other structures. You enter through a gate which leads to a short wooden path of wood and rocks. To the right is bocce ball court, which was fully utilized all night (regulars came toting their own equipment!), to the left a few steps up is the dining deck with string lights hanging between the trees for the only illumination. The giant magnolia tree canopy overhead was magical. The owner is very friendly, and took care of us for most of the night. He enjoys interacting with the guests and making them feel like home. The menu is in Spanish, but they are happy to translate. The food was delicious. We had huitlacoche tacos (great), crispy fried fish collar, and then the best dish of the night...poblano risotto with skirt steak. Wow. That was a stand out even though it was preceded by some pretty terrific stuff. Risotto is a big part of the menu here and I can see why. It was cooked perfectly and had a wonderful balance of creamy and spicy which paired so well with the tender steak. We had been there for hours so decided to skip dessert. Next time! The attached wine shop was well appointed and open until 11 pm, perfect if you want to shop after dinner. Relax and stay awhile. read more

Very good drinks and food, the service its ok... but I like the place

Really disappointed with this place. From the beginning we never experienced a good vibe. This is the first time in a while that I struck out. My wife and I fell trap to a review from a pretty good reliable source. Crossing South (KPBS) host Jorge had a excellent review of this place. He got a recommendation from someone and he absolutely raved about this place. Unfortunately we will not be returning. The service was so lousy I could not wait to just exit after paying. Yes the owner probably did come by but it was not a real authentic visit. He just came by to check on how things were going, we were fooled. I kept thinking the ambience looks awesome and what seemed the clientele all seemed very well taken care of. I kept trying in mind that things would turn around. My wife and I felt like the service was just so rough for a beautiful place. From the start off none of the waiters seemed to give us any type exceptional service. You would expect something a bit better since the menu selection is pretty awesome. We must admit the food was good but it was not at the level of other places we have been to in Mexico. That was a big disappointment also that Tetuano was not available at the moment. When we got our dishes they were not brought even close to one another. The steak arrived 20 minutes after my wifes order. She ordered the fish of the day. Just to give you a heads up we did not even tip. Our bill came out to a little bit under 90 dollars, which is very reasonable for a steak dinner , fish of the day , and a couple appetizers, and a few drinks. It would have been a tab bit more if we ordered desert, but getting any sort of attention from any of the waiters was a horrific experience. Just a heads up if anyone does decide to experience this unique tragedy there is no set waiter. All the waiters seemed to be male by the way. Which usually is not a problem, but it seemed they were all just as bad as one another. They did a-lot of walking by and not checking up. When they took our order did not even give any type of suggestions. We mentioned to the order taker that this was out first time, that did not even matter. I feel bad the owner getting a bad review but I guess you have to either be a local to get better service or know the owner or maybe have a food show to get the real experience here. Here was my last and final statement, if you think I left a tip you must be insane. I love watching Reservoir Dogs, that is one of my Quentin Taratino movies , and if you know you know. You always leave a tip, even of you don't believe on tipping. They did not get any help from me. This is a special weekend for my wife, I brought her down to Ensenada for her birthday, and this place helped me out. I am sure we won't be getting this type of service anywhere today and tomorrow, the reason I will be sticking to places we know. I don't want to ruin her Birthday day today. Playing it safe! Usually I could say I would give a place like this a second chance but talking to a local, she told me that is a common thing around this town. Usually where the food is decent the service suffers. I rather go where my business matters and be treated a little bit like they appreciate your business than going to a spiffy place like this. Just know what to expect if you dare go to this place, I rather go spend my money somewhere else. A place like this would not survive anywhere else. If you want to know how to service your client-ale, take notes from a little hole in the wall place in Chula Vista. It's called Italgo. Its on Broadway, the service will blow your mind and the pricing is equivalent to this torture chamber. I have so many other reasons I can give but rather not, because I want to enjoy a nice day with my special date. We are celebrating life. My wife has dealt with so much in the past years with health concerns and is currently dealing with a new concern also. Life is short to be bitter about just having lousy service, but when you want to celebrate life you wish you could do in a place we thought we could. Thank you for letting us down so bad, enjoy your tip money, please share it equally. I am sure thats what you do with your tips anyways, and it shows. So when you don't get it a tip it really doesn't burn like how I felt with the lousiest service in Ensenada. Even my Fenix fish taco stand that I have been visiting for close to 30 years blows doors off your roof. Oh you have a partial roof. Loved your set up but you need to improve so much in so many ways. I can't imagine putting together a better restaurant than I enjoyed tonight. It was mostly outdoor seating in this gorgeous oasis in the city and the owner bounced from table to table making sure all was well. He had an incredible personality and was the kind of guy you want to hang out with. And then the food. There's something really special that happens when the chef expertly pairs traditional Mexican spices with classic dishes. My three courses were chocolate clams, tuna carpaccio & the most incredible chicken liver pate I've eaten. Combining all of those with the various Chile oils and sauces were amazing and the spiced jicama sticks were a crispy and delicious palate cleanser. They have one white wine and it was a tremendous Sauvignon Blanc which couldn't have matched more perfectly. Last, but certainly not least, I asked the waiter to bring his favorite dessert and he brought me an off-menu sweet cornbread and ice cream treat that was the perfect finish. Three nights in Ensenada have far exceeded my expectations and, from what I've been told, the best is yet to come in Valle de Guadalupe where I'm headed tomorrow. Stay tuned. read more

Loved this place! The ambiance is amazing with its outdoor seating, smooth jams and wonderful hospitality. Javie, the owner, greeted us upon arrival and treated us like queens. The service was top notch and food was delicious. I really liked the blackened tuna, it was one of the best that I have had! The shrimp ceviche was good too. I had their soup of the day, which was chicken tortilla soup and had a nice light broth. Overall, had a great experience and would recommend stopping by for dinner! read more

This place is a true gem in every sense of the word. I am conflicted in writing this review because I don't want anyone else to know about this amazing place so when I get back to Ensenada, I can get quick service but...I want Javier, and every waiter I met here to be UBER successful and this business to expand and grow. If this business was in the states there would be a line out the door. I highly recommend this place. The tuna sashimi and yellow tail sashimi appetizers are incredible, and the ceviche is DELICIOUS. All the apps are extremely well seasoned, and the bread they serve is wonderful. The Ribeye was a MASSIVE hit with everyone in our group, but I enjoyed the tomahawk more personally. The seafood risotto is very cheesy (which I personally like). All of the steaks just melts in your mouth. There is also a great bar with anything you could want to drink, and the staff are all very friendly. read more

Decided to dine here on our short trip in Ensenada. SO glad we did. First off, What a cute place. Most of the restaurant is outdoor with patio lights. Along with a relaxing playlist with the perfect volume. Their customer service was excellent. The guys waiting our table were very friendly and helpful. The food. My husband ordered the duck with ricotta poblano which had a hint of spicy, I ordered the ribeye with fries. Both were very delicious. We were quite full and satisfied. They're wine was delicious, I regret not bringing a bottle back home. This place is great and a must if you want to treat yourself while you're Ensenada. Tried this place per the reviews and it is s little away from the main corridor. Started off ok but when all the adults got their food and the kids still had not been served. We asked several times for the kids plates but were basically ignored. We shared our food with our three grand kids. We were a party of 5 adults and 3 kids. A good restaurant would normally bring the kids food first and serve the adults last. It's a shame that you have to ask two different waiters and the owner and still be ignored when asking for the kids food. For these reasons I would not recommend this place for its service and also for the food. If I was able to rate a 0 I would have. Wish we would have found a better place to eat. Never even received an apology from the owner or the waiters for not bringing the kids food out. read more

We decided to try it based upon the Yelp reviews saying that they have vegan options. Maybe they did in 2017, but in 2019 they don't. My only option were the mushroom tacos they made vegan and they were awful, oily, and lacked flavor. Overpriced and not worth it. read more

This is quickly becoming one of our favorite places in town. Place has a ton of things going for it, ambiance, staff and of course the food. First off the ambiance, great outdoor space with great lighting with the majority of the dining area set under a giant tree. Music is on point and there are people playing pahdunk (spelling?) which is similar to bocce. Second the staff, all the employees are super friendly and go out of their way to make sure your experience is going great, none more than the owner who is probably their hardest worker. Always great to see that. Finally the food, we have eaten here a few times and have yet to have a single dish that was anything less than great. Returned in my yearly motorcycle trip to Ensenada, the MUST stop is always Javi's restaurant! This time we took it seriously and ordered 16 different dishes! This restaurant is a unique gem in Ensenada and probably the best seafood place I've been to. As always Javier makes the experience even better with his great attitude as a host! Go and try the Tiradito, both octopus cilantro and octopus chipotle. Also ask for the secret fish, code name "Alfonso" . Used to go to Javi's restaurant in San Miguel. As a career chef, I think eating out can sometimes be bitter sweet. Constantly analyzing the technical flaws takes away from the pleasure of the meal. Yes, this restaurant did have a couple of vegan options, but nothing spectacular. We liked the calabaza well enough, but it was nothing to write home about. The huitlacoche tasted like pesto more than it did huitlacoche, and went uneaten. The reason I'm rating it as a 2 though, is because in a party of four, three women, one man, when the owner (I think?) came up to chat with us after dinner, he only directed his attention to the male identifying diner. He completely ignored the other three of us, even when directly spoken to. This was especially irritating as one of the women at the table was the one paying the bill. Come on men, it's 2018. We were staying in Ensenada on a boat for a few nights and we were having dinner with a couple of local residents. We asked that they select a place that is not a tourist restaurant. This was the perfect spot! There is a wine store attached to the courtyard shared with the restaurant. We grabbed a couple of wonderful local wines and then proceeded to check out the appetizers and main courses. The owner, Javier, was very friendly and helpful with suggestions. Each of us had something different and we were all smiling at the end of our meal. It was also fun that they have a Mexican version of a Bocce court right in the courtyard. One of the waiters helped us to understand how to play this variation of the game. A fun night! read more
