We dined each morning of our stay and to be completely honest, sometimes the service and food were a bit inconsistent. I chalk it up to growing pains and I'm confident they'll find their way. In the evening, the space transforms to a super cool, fine dining experience with a creative, delicious menu, as well as an excellent bar. One of the few spots in Portugal that I've been able to fine a perfectly mixed cocktail! Portions are deceivingly large and the menu truly lends itself to sharing. Don't miss the Pato à Augusta, or the Guinea Fowl dishes! Starters were great too. There's also a second, more casual lounge side to the restaurant with cocktails and a bar menu, complete with a DJ. Good sounds, maybe a bit loud, but a great vibe. Dress code is Smart Casual and some reports of people turned away for open-toed footwear, so best to be respectful. The next thing you need to know is that the menu here is more sharing plates than entree style meals. Oddly, we had a hard time getting our server to take the order from our whole table of 6. He would take one or two items and then dash off. I am unsure if this is because their kitchen is tiny or what. That said-- the food we ordered was all delicious. The tuna steak and polenta/cheese dish particularly got high marks. Fado is enjoyed in silence. Some in our group were initially a little put-off by the "lecture" at the front door to be silent during the show. But, honestly, the show itself was so captivating, I don't think anyone was tempted to chat. But, on the topic of silence, the restaurant will only take/serve orders during breaks in the show. The cadence is 20 minutes of music and then a 20 minute break. I think there were 3-4 "sets" during the evening. Most people left before the end but as we were waiting for our final orders we ended up staying for the whole show.

For example, it's all tapas (though the plates are large enough to be a small meal), and it's hard to have a balanced meal unless eating in a group, I feel. Coffee available, but not tea. If you think of it more as a fado bar with bar/tavern food, this place makes way more sense. Most of the reason for 4 stars is the live fado music. I was here during the low season, just before a Christmas, so no issues finding a seat but calling ahead seems generally advisable. It's a very small, cozy space to hear this intimate art form. The space is cold in the winter. I kept most of my layers on as did many patrons, because the space is small and drafty, since they keep the doors open, presumably to advertise the fado. Bathrooms: Mostly functional and clean. Men's room doesn't have a toilet seat at the time of this writing so you'll have to squat if you plan to take a poop. And don't take too long because there's only one toilet each for males and females.

Two fantastic dinners - two fantastic concerts!…read more This little gem was just next door of our rental apartement. What a fantastic coincidence! The first day we arrived we've seen the sign outside advertising the Fado concert that night. Of course we had to see that! Did start at 22.00. But food was served only before the concert, so we went in around 20.30. Staff was really friendly and helpful about the food. And let's just start with that said food. Absolutely delicous what the cook is preparing in this restaurant. You can get your tapas-sized items (Petiscos) or real meals. We went for Petiscos that night. Here's what we ordered (forgot the portugese names, sorry): Croquetes: wonderful, nice texture and flavours Fried Shrimp: fresh and crispy Melted Cheese and Garlic Bread: nice and creamy Boiled Shrimps in Sauce: fantastic, really fresh Stuffed Mushrooms: good choice, nice meat topping So, food-wise a great place so far. After the dinner the Fado Concert started. And what a great concert that was! It's a very intimate, small stage. The elderly gentlemen had a wonderful and powerful voice. So much soul in it! And the instruments were also played very very professionally. We found out later, that this restaurant here belong so one of these gentlemen! All the guest were very quiet and respectful....except for one table with some young guests. Quite loud and chatting all the time during the concert. If you wanna party, go somewhere else please. I found it very disrespectful, there are artists on stage, so please behave a bit. There's no entrance fee, there's no cover charge. All you gotta do is eat or even just drink something. A wonderful place away from the tourists traps. Yet so close to the center! We came back a few days later when there was another concert. This time it was traditional portugese folk music. Just a guy and his guitar. But very very entertaining. Mostly locals were present and did sing half of his songs with. A great night with a fantastic atmosphere! That night we ordered Ossos do espinhaco (a huge load of meat for 4 Euro), some more croquetes, the Shrimp Risotto and the Octopus and a good bottle of Portugese Red (Quinta Do Espinho - a heavy red full of smoot and warm flavours). Good Chocolate Lava Cake for dessert. The Octopus was fresh and so tender....sadly there was quite too much salt on it! The Risotto on the other hand was as perfect as it could be! So, this is an amazing restaurant with great entertainment, good food and fantastic staff. Very fair prices as well. Forget the Fado presentations for tourists and head here! Be sure to book a table though!

We were actually really eager to leave Portugal but on our last night there we decided to treat ourselves to some good food since our morale was so low.We stumbled on this place by chance and decided to go in and ended up staying for 2 1/2 hours. This dinner turned our trip around. The ambiance was very classy and clean and the food is amazing. For 65 Euros we got two plates of tapas, three main course dishes, a dessert dish, and a glass of wine. Such a good price for a quality meal. I had the codfish dish which was the best thing I ate in Portugal, would definitively recommend it. My sister had the burger which she found a little salty and didn't love the meat in it. The dessert was amazing and the grilled cheese tapa dish was one of our favorites. Around 10 pm they had a live performance of traditional Portuguese music which we really enjoyed as well. We walked into this tiny establishment off of one of Alfama's charming streets and enjoyed a lovely evening. We started off with their house wine and enjoyed the olives, cheese, and ham starters. All codded-out, we opted for the sea bass, octopus salad, a vegetable pasta, and the acorda soup for me (a garlicky bread soup with poached egg.) We all agreed that it was one of the top meals we shared during our trip. The fado singers were the owner and her mother, both of whom were fabulous, as was the guitar-playing gentleman who also sang. The atmosphere was so cozy, as if we were dining in someone's home while they performed for us. We all felt it was the perfect ending to our vacation. There are so many fado establishments throughout Alfama, but I'm so happy we ended up here, and would happily recommend it.
