I couldn't type this review fast enough omg Lolol. So I just discovered an interesting policy I have never heard of (I'm not from Virginia) that does not allow me entry to a showing (Jurassic) if I'm 15 minutes "late". Ironically, I showed up late on PURPOSE to avoid the previews. I asked the reason for this policy, and the black female manager did not tell me the reasons. Her exact response was "we don't let anybody in past a certain time". (Redundant). I don't think it was a difficult question that I asked, nor did I present as nasty or flustered. I asked very plainly the WHY, not the WHAT, and she could barely make eye contact with me. I then asked "well, is it because it interrupts/distracts other patrons?" And she said "yes that's one of many reasons". Lmao Why she couldn't just share the reasons with me, was very unprofessional. Perhaps she's used to disgruntled customers and was prematurely impatient with me?.... But girl.... I am kind and being patient with this very weird theater lmao. Or maybe she actually didn't have the answer for me. Who knows. 1 Since late patrons are being stopped at the ticket booth, does this mean they're not allowed to purchase popcorn if the previews are about to end? 2 By this logic of interrupting other patrons, doesn't that mean we aren't allowed to use the bathroom once the movie has begun? Anyway, I asked for a refund which I could not get due to me purchasing my ticket via Fandango. My other option was to catch the next movie showing , which would be a $3 up charge because it's in 3D. I don't like 3D but at this point... I've already lost the battle I asked the manager..... "so do I pay for the $3 up charge via fandango, Since you guys have nothing to do with my initial payment transaction? " Of course the answer was no. I was obligated to pay them directly. (Capitalism?) My goodness... The inconsistency in conjunction with the weird nonchalant attitude of the manager was an unnecessary annoyance for me. Like... I can't get a refund NOR CAN I GET A CLEAR EXPLANATION?! I'm from NYC and have never heard of this policy before, so an explanation would have actually made things clear for me. But instead I was met with no eye contact and weird body language. I was sincerely confused and not being an asshole. I'm also an actress and therapist, hence my attention to personalities and communication. Anyway I ended up paying the $3 difference, and was then instructed to go inside the theater, 20 minutes early. LMAO !!! I guess she missed the part where I said I don't like previews (may I suggest a customer service course for all staff?) I asked "how much time do I have"? And she said "15 minutes". So I ended up waiting in my car. *sigh* This is why movie theaters are going out of business now . All this trouble, and overpriced movie snacks, when I could just wait for the film to be streamed online, with popcorn that doesn't cost $1,266. Bonus: I was here last week to see Megan 2.0. There was an afternoon showing, that my friend and I were unable to purchase online for some reason (the night before...) So we decided to just purchase tickets here in person, the day of. Turns out, the showing was completely removed as an option. From both the kiosk and the staff operating system. We ended up leaving and driving to regal cinemas near Ashland instead. I prob shouldn't have returned to this place after the Megan 2.0 issue, but I decided to give bow tie a second chance. But honey, I'm not baseball so there won't be any third strike options with me. This is my first (and last time) in RVA. Lord! I am realistic, so I do not expect for other businesses to thrive like the ones we have in NYC, but whew! It's very very very clear why it will never compare. I mean, Jesus... it's a slow Monday afternoon. The theater is VERY empty and this whole thing was so dramatic and avoidable. Maybe consider using this specific policy ONLY during peak hours? I'm no business woman, nor am I an entitled Karen, but im a sincerely confused out of town visitor who wants y'all to do better. Also, Please don't be harsh with that black manager by the way, it's not her fault that these policies exist. But she could definitely use a customer service refresher course. read more

The Bow Tie Cinema is my favorite place to see movies in Richmond. They always have multiple showings of all the best movies as well as online ticket buying options, so you're able to go see exactly what you are hoping to with all of your friends and family. It's always keep very tidy and clean. The concessions are full of popcorn, candy, soda, and more. The parking lot is huge which is super convenient. Also the theater is located right across the street from multiple restaurants and even Gelati Celesti, so grab a bite before or after your movie to complete your fun day! read more

Although my Adult children having been going to this theatre since it opened up some 12 years ago; last night was first time at this theatre as it's not exactly in my backyard. Frankly I was pleasantly surprised from the moment I and 5 other family members stepped into the place. The employees were smiling, happy and respectful to us. They even greeted us!! Place was very clean at 7:30 pm as were easily directed to the screen showing MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 7. Seats were very comfortable and seemed almost new but again very clean!!! Popcorn at $5.00 for a tub was a good value and I think the best I've had in past 10 years. Not stale or chewy but very CRISP. Bathrooms even at 10:00 pm we're in very good shape and again reasonably clean. I highly recommend this theatre if your anywhere close to it or do like we did and just plan to go there. read more

Excellent customer service. I had trouble with the kiosk & without even looking around a manager came to assist. (The screening room had been switched & kiosk couldn't be used.) He was extremely helpful, taking my payment at the service desk & getting me to the film just before it started. While the theater is in a bit of disarray due to current renovation, I didn't mind. Bow Tie Cinema on Arthur Ashe Boulevard is my go-to mid-week date night spot. I absolutely love going to the movies and nothing beats the Tuesday movie special. A regular movie is only $7 and 3D is only $10. I enjoyed my experience this past Tuesday watching Avatar 2 in 3D with our $5 bucket of popcorn I'm always surprised at how many people don't know that Tuesdays are discounted when I tell them. I almost didn't write this review because I don't want it to start getting too packed when I go there. Bow Tie Movieland, the main theater, and Criterion, the smaller venue across the parking lot that shows limited release films, are my go-to theaters in Richmond. Both accept MoviePass and have a free rewards program that I can use on top of it, so I visit at least 2-4 times per month. They have a decent selection of blockbuster and film festival movies, seating is comfortable and in tiers so that your view isn't blocked by the people in front of you, and there's a variety of concessions available, including hot food and alcohol. A ticket usually costs around $11.50 and a small popcorn is $6.25, but they do have discounts for students, seniors, and specials on Tuesdays. Sometimes the screens behind the ticket desk are blank, so make sure you research the movies and times before you arrive. The line is often long, but it moves quickly, and there are several self service kiosks. The ticket has your theater number printed on it, with theaters 1-10 to the left of the concessions and the rest to the right. There are two bathrooms on each side, one at the front of the hall and another towards the back. My main gripe is some movies will stop playing after only a week or two, but the website only shows the schedule for a few days at a time. It's frustrating to make plans to see something the following week only then to find out it's already gone. read more

So, Bow Tie has been around what... 9-10 years now? I used to LOVE this theater, but the last several times I've come, it has been one bad experience after another. First, the concession line is always super slow regardless of whether there's one in line or 20. And the last couple times, there was a person at the register who WASN'T taking orders. Just standing there. Why fake me out like that? And what the heck are you doing there if you're not there to help? Second, twice in one week two DIFFERENT screening rooms were without heat. The first time, we just braved our way through it and froze to death (this was when we had temperatures in the single digits to teens). Instead of not running the film, or telling customers there was no heat and allowing them to make their choice whether or not they wanted to suffer, they did nothing. Third, the screening rooms are filthy! Sure, they get the trash off the floor after each screening, but the seats are dirty and in terrible condition--ripped, cracking, etc. Fourth, the bathrooms are often without toilet paper, and in the one next to screening room 5, the wallpaper is peeling off the walls. We reported it two weeks ago, and it hasn't been fixed. This is my neighborhood theater. I want to keep coming here, but it is really a disappointment how much it has gone down, and seemingly so quickly! Management, get it together! read more

I live in Hampton Roads but I've made a few trips to see films here. Bowtie screens a few more of the indies and hard-to-find films that I like to discover. I've made trips to see (500) Days of Summer (opened here a good month before HR got it), Shame (played at just one screen in Norfolk, months later), Fanboys (one screen) and Beats Rhymes and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest (one screen for only one weekend). The quality of the films I've seen there have varied, but the quality of Bowtie hasn't. I appreciate the risks they take in screening indies and non-blockbusters. The films they opt to carry make the 90+ minute trip worthwhile. As far as service, it seems decent even though the only interaction I've really had with their staff is when I bought tickets - the people at the box office seem very nice. I appreciate the beer and wine bar, and although I wish I could bring in either into a theater, I completely understand. Haven't bought anything from the concession stand because since I'm driving from Norfolk I usually make plans to get something to eat from Buz and Ned's beforehand. As I've read from another Yelper, I agree that the screens are a little small. But I prefer the intimate setting because it seemingly adds to the ideals of an independent film. I like that arrangement, and the picture & sound quality (sharper, not necessarily louder) is better than many of the theaters in Hampton Roads. I could easily give this five stars but there are still some unknowns, and maybe I'm just jealous that it isn't closer to home. But I'd recommend it to any cinephile, especially since it looks like one of the few places in Richmond (and possibly in the region) that'll screen indies. JV read more

I like Bow Tie, and it has a few unique aspects. One, they have a bar, which I've never made use of (But if you can bring a drink into the theater? Genius.) The snacks counter is probably the fastest moving one I've ever encountered and the menu looks expansive, but--keto. So no snacks for me. It also has a small, separate theater for Criterion Collection movies!!! I keep meaning to go, but I'm really psyched just knowing they appreciate great cinema. Yes, I DID used to be a snobby video store clerk--why do you ask? There's also a lot of late night dining options all around the cinema, so that's cool and a big plus. Lots of well lit parking for movie goers as well. With Covid, I'm sure the theater and local restaurants all close much earlier, but it's turned this part of town into a fun little spot. read more

I've been going to Bow-Tie Cinemas ever since it opened. It may very well be my preferred theater of choice. I live in Mechanicsville so my choices are the ghetto Regal Cinema at Virginia Center Commons or make the journey to Short Pump. I would usually just head to short pump but the massive amounts of people make the movie going experience unpleasant. If I wanted to deal with large crowds of a-holes I'd move back to California. The screens are NOT the same size at this place. If you're watching a movie that has been out for a few weeks you might find yourself in one of their tiny rooms. If you're lucky enough to see your movie on one of their large screens it's a pretty decent picture. I recently saw X-Men Days of Future past in Theater 6 and the screen was nice and large. The seats rock back a few inches which are nice but the arm rests don't fold up. My son and I sat in the upper front row with the guard rail in front. The guard rail is nice because you can put your feet up and relax. It was absolutely glorious! My son and I practically had the theater to ourselves. The sound was dreadful but its Richmond after all. These people don't know anything about calibrating sound or at the very least turning it up so we can experience the movie. I think the projectionists are just young kids who don't care. Back in my days in Fullerton I used to go to an AMC movie theater that had Sony Dynamic Digital Sound (SDDS) that blew us out of the seat. I remember True Lies almost shattering my ear drums. The craziest thing I ever felt in a movie theater was back in 1999. This terrible movie called 'The Haunting'. There was a scene with so much low-end bass I thought the whole theater was going to shake apart. I remember watching another movie during that same week and from a different theater FELT THE BASS of that movie. I laughed "they must be watching The Haunting next door" I get more audio thrills from my wimpy home theater than this place. It's a real shame they don't crank up the sound in this place. Despite the weak sound (maybe I just got unlucky today?) I like this theater a lot. They offer some decent food too. The have some killer nachos (get the deluxe!) and also serve up little cheeseburger sliders. I think this is pretty cool for a movie theater to serve up good food. They also serve beer in a weird closed off section. I've been going here a lot and haven't ever seen anyone drink a beer in the DMZ. In closing Bow-Tie is my #1 choice when I want to see a movie. It will always hold a special place in my heart because I bumped into David Strathairn there. David Strathairn was filming Lincoln in Richmond and there he was. Right there in the men's room. He was so incognito it took me several minutes to recognize him. Pretty cool stuff. read more

I loved my experience at Bow Tie Cinema to be completely honest. The location is right in Scott's Addition and right up the street from the Diamond. Yes, it is a smaller theatre, but sometimes that makes for a much better movie experience! When we went there was barely a line to purchase movie tickets (major pro), they have a bar with beer and wine. The eating area is a good size. The bathrooms were clean when I went. Given that this is a smaller movie theatre I love that they have plenty of parking and decent size theatre rooms. Tuesdays are for discounted tickets! (Yes that's a great deal). Only thing I wish is that they had cinnamon pretzels. If you're like me and don't like crowds much especially when you're trying to enjoy a movie I recommend checking out Bow Tie. The sound and theater experience here is amazing. I used to work at a theater in college, so staff musters more friendliness than most theater employees I knew. The location is close to coffee, food, gelato and more. The theater serves food, drinks, and has a lot more on their menu than most movie theaters. Male Bathrooms are fairly clean for the amount of people that roll through here. I suggest catching matinee if possible, but they have special Tuesday movie day for discounted prices. I think it is the best big movie theater in the area, but this is not the place for you are seeking cheap with local flavor; the Byrd theater is a better option if you want a down home theater experience. The building itself contains a bit of Richmond history, a spot where steam engines were built. I love renovated old buildings that have character and soul. read more

I love this theatre because it's so clean, quaint, visually appealing, and you can't get a better location right in Scott's Addition. I've been here plenty of times in the past, but yesterday my mom and I went on a date to see Cinderella (which was incredible by the way) and I was reminded of why I love Bow Tie so much. They have plenty of events going on and I have got to get out to Movies and Mimosas one Saturday! The theaters themselves are on the smaller side, but the screens and sound are on point. The popcorn is delish and they have a self-serve spout that spits butter. How cool is that? Feel free to as much butter as you want. I want all of it. Other things you'll find in Bow Tie Cinemas are clean bathrooms, cute birthday party rooms, and a section where you can buy alcohol. My first movie theater experience in Richmond! I came here today to watch the Hunger Games (which was a really good movie in my opinion). I'm used to the big theater chains back in CA (Regal or AMC), so it was interesting to come to Bowtie Cinemas. After getting my ticket checked, I headed to the concession stand to break a $20 bill in order to pay someone back for my ticket (he had bought it beforehand for me). I ended up getting some candy (Airhead Extreme strips). The screening room itself was rather small, certainly smaller than most of the theaters I have been to, which meant it was not possible for our large group to get seated together. However, the seats were super comfy! The screen wasn't that large either, but the quality of the picture and sound were excellent. At the end of the movie, we were shuttled out toward the middle concession area; some employees were close by (they weren't there earlier); I think they might be monitoring at the end of showings to make sure people don't movie hop. Our large group stayed in the concession area for a good 10-15 minutes chatting about the movie we had just seen, which prompted a worker to come over and ask if we were waiting to be seated. We said no. Is it not common for people to hang around the theater and chat? She certainly seemed confused by our presence. Overall, it was a nice theater, and matinee tickets only cost $7.50! That's two to three dollars less than what I would pay for matinee back home! Woot for saving money! read more

This place has gone extremely downhill and it's so disappointing. Staff are incompetent, lazy, and not helpful. They are not concerned about customer service nor customer loyalty anymore. This is one of my favorite movies theaters in RVA. I love the old train station vibes, and how it's so "Richmond." I went for their 10 year anniversary (they opened in 2009 - can't believe it's been ten years!!). In celebration, they had $5 movie tickets and $5 popcorn. I wish they'd do this more often! The theater was crowded but also clean and well operated. Lines moved quickly, as it was clear they had a lot of staff on duty for the promotion. Highly recommend. read more

I love this place! Its close to my house, the building is an old train station, and they play movies. Yay! Haha, but seriously, the theater seats are comfortable, the movies always play on time, and Bowtie usually has most of the movies that get released. It has more of a Richmond feel than the Regals in the area, but maybe that's just me. Employees seem nice enough and they do their jobs well. They also have a massive parking lot. Some of the theaters can be a little on the small side, so I would suggest getting to the showing earlier if you have a particular row you fancy. They also play late night movies, like Rocky Horror or Re-Animator! I've never gone but it sounds like a good time. read more

I have been here about half a dozen times at all different times and have always found the staff to be friendly and helpful. The location, for us city dwellers is a gift from the heavens. New, clean, modern, state of the art cinema's right in the city! Even better, they sell booze! I love the big cup holders and feel that the seats are as comfortable as any. The sound is fantastic as the systems are all new and higher tech then most theaters. The fantastic and sympathetic reuse of an old railroad car manufacturing warehouse is to be applauded. Bringing in business to a part of town that was once reserved for heavy industry is also genius. I support anyone who puts money back into the city and uses a building that is already there. Sad to just give 3 stars but it is A-ok. Used to be my favorite theater because of location and stadium seating and they generally have the newest movies. With the addition of the indie theater it makes it even better. I also use their rewards program and have gotten a few free popcorns or tickets (not as good as the Regal card though). However it has gotten so crowded at times to make me turn around and leave more than once. They definitely need some better crowd management - the lines for both the machine ticketing and regular ticketing can be horrendous. Despite their pretty big parking lot those busy times you can be circling for a while (I guess take that as a warning the lobby will be crazy). Also concessions counter could be faster. Pretty much all the issues are before actually seeing the movie. read more

I have never been impressed with this place since they opened. We walked in and didn't have a wait to get tickets. The ticket taker didn't seem to be interested in working today. Getting food was confusing because I had to ask the price of everything because no prices were listed. Ordered the mini burgers, which was not an exaggeration they were mini, and the patties were very slim. The wait was short for the food but after getting the food I could tell why. I do not drink pop so icee was the only choice but I could not substitute for some reason. The food is not something I would get again but I had a gift card. Overall this is a typical visit to Bowtie. The seats had stains on them, some fresh, others have been there awhile. It is nice to have a theater this close but very disappointed in experience. read more

I've been to Bow Tie multiple times since living in Richmond. I love how this theater offers different specials and discounts. This particular visit to Bow Tie Cinema, I went to see a movie on a Tuesday. Super Tuesday is the special of the day where all tickets are discounted to $7. The concession stand offers customers $5 large bucket of popcorn, which I took advantage of! As I walked into the theater, the screen was off, no previews were playing and it was very quiet. I sat down and started to eat my large popcorn to pass the time. After a while I was full and went back to the concession stand to ask the cashier for a clear cover to put on top of the popcorn bucket. The cashier informed me that the cover would cost a $1 and I didn't expect that I would have to pay for it. Since I didn't have my wallet, I just told the cashier that is was okay and I walked off in disbelief. Going back to the theater the screen was still off and the movie was supposed to start at 9:15. The actual screen didn't start playing previews until 9:18. Overall the movie was great, but Bow Tie Cinema should definitely get their logistics together with playing movies on time and offering the popcorn covers with the purchase for FREE or informing customers of the cost once the popcorn is purchased. read more

Moved to RVA from Hampton Roads this summer, and since there aren't any AMC theaters around (woohoo cheap weeknights!), this is probably the best nearby; it's quite accessible from Richmond proper. On weeknights it's pretty empty, however even on weekends there's decent parking. Their mozzarella sticks are pretty tasty (although overpriced--it's a theater!), and the atmosphere is kinda cool. Seats are decent and recline a bit, but the armrests don't come up (argh!). Haven't noticed any weird smells yet, but they can only be as weird as the theater patrons, right? Had an issue buying tickets via iPhone through Flixter once (it never showed up that I paid in their system at the theater, but charged my account anyway), but that could be attributed to the app. No frills, has a student discount, and it's local. About all you can ask for. read more

Meh. I've been a few times and this place still hasn't won me over. For starters the service is SO SLOW. There's normally only one person at the ticket counter and maybe (if you're lucky) two people at concessions. Seriously, Bow Tie? My most recent visit was no different, there were only two people working behind the concession counter. TWO. So there we all were just waiting. The folks in front of me simply gave up and went to their movie. Sigh. But I figured I'd waited that long I had to push through. When I finally got up to the line there was no acknowledgement or greeting just a blank stare. I didn't even care because at that point I just wanted to get my popcorn and get to my seat. And don't even think about getting a quick refill for your large popcorn. Ha. I think what made the whole experience more more frustrating is the fact that there were plenty of other associates there that could have jumped back there to help move the line along! Why didn't they stop talking to each other and head back there!? I know they saw the ridiculous line. Ugh. I wish that were the worst of it, but once you get past all of that the inside of the theaters are so dirty! Everything from sticky floors and dirty seats to leftover popcorn on the floor. Eww. I will say they tend to do a better job if you go earlier in the day when it's less busy. But, the reality is it should be clean all the time. Even after all that they still get three stars. Because I KNOW this place has potential. It did when it opened, I just hope they can get back there. But they have a lot of work to do! read more

Bowtie is my preferred movie theater choice!! Short Pump is too overcrowded and there's almost always someone who talks too much or laughs uncontrollably and ruins the whole movie going experience. Short Pump also does NOT give Student Discounts on weekends while Bowtie DOES give student discounts so all we pay is 8 bucks. Bowtie is very clean, visually appealing and has some historic character to it instead of just looking like a normal theater. The seats are pretty comfortable and considering this place is only a few years old, the bathrooms/seats still feel new to me. The parking situation is probably the only downside about this location, because it's almost impossible to find parking close to the entrance and you'll end up having to park all the way in the back where the light flickers on and off.. They also have a little section where they serve alcohol here! Which I guess is cool if you're into that kinda stuff. You can also reserve rooms for conferences/birthdays but the rooms look small. Nice theater and good prices. So I have a few thoughts about this place. There are things that I love and things that make me feel some type of way. First, this place has a butter spout for popcorn that is self-serve. Could you ask for more? I think the seats at this place are relatively comfy as well! I have heard great things about their monthly $10 program for unlimited movies, but I myself have not yet tried it. Coming from someone who is crazy about getting to a theater early, if you get to your movie at this theater about 15 minutes prior to the start time, you are destined to get the seat of your choice. These days the movie house is not as it was in the past , but we stopped in to see a must see movie (Respect) , and had a great time of it. Monday , first showing and not many people in the theater. Best (large) movie theater in Richmond! Friendly staff and we've never struggled trying to get tickets or seats. Ticket prices pretty reasonable. They have plenty of self-service machines as well. Nice local beer selection that you can bring into the theater. Tuesdays are crazy but only because they do discount tickets, so beware. I only gave them a four because I've been trying to become a criterion member but they never have the cards at the ticket booth. read more

Love this theater. It's brand new, nice size theater rooms, friendly staff, downtown and clean bathrooms. It's a little overpriced, but if you have your student ID, it's $1+ off. It has all the latest movies and their theater rooms are spacious and surround sound of course. This place has an enormous amount of selection for foods and drinks. So you have a choice of a dinner snack, a few drinks and watch a movie, all at the theater. You can't bring alcohol in the actual screening room but there is a designated drinking area in the lobby were you can enjoy it. It's just nice to have an option to have a beer before the movie. Also they set up tables for you to relax if you get there before the movie starts. The only thing I don't like is that the armrest in the screening rooms doesn't fold back. You can't cuddle haha! But the seats are nice and comfortable regardless. I also recommend stopping by the information desk before you leave. Bowtie offers special screenings for the kids, old movies and great deals on certain days and times. There are fliers all around the info desk you can take. I like that they are showing Jurassic Park on the big screen. I watched it in the theater when I was a kid and it's nice I can bring my little brother to do the same. And the specials aren't full price. Everyone should come to the Bowtie for a movie night. read more

I'm not a big movie person (I probably only see a movie in the theater 3-5 times per year) but when I go in Richmond this is typically my theater of choice. The main reason I go here is its extensive selection- they are always showing what I see and have a lot of showing times- and central location in the Scott's Addition area. Even when busy, getting movie tickets is quick and pain-free with the self-service option. Nice food/drink selection and they even have beer and wine that's not terrible. Seats are comfortable and lean back, though it can get a little bit tight (on my most recent trip a lady reclined her chair back at my legs for most of the movie). read more

This place is awesome for your new-movie viewing needs. Sadly, if you want the discount tickets, you'll have to physically show up to get them. The internet is no friend to this place. I've come here many times before to see a variety of movies and have been suitably impressed with their facility. They keep it clean, ticket lines move quickly, and they don't let anything get run down. In other words, they do successfully what most movie theaters fail abysmally at doing. Not a whole lot of complaints here. They offer alcoholic beverages, though naturally you'll pay through the nose for them (same with the food, like any other place). They have discount tickets for students and on certain days (Super Tuesday evening tickets are nice and affordable), though you'll have to be there in the flesh to get them since their online partners are a pain to work with and won't allow you to buy those discounts through them. I live within walking distance of this place so it doesn't affect me much, though it's still annoying that they partnered with a less-than-helpful online ticketing service. A few other notes: parking is hugely plentiful and you'll always find a place, their little arcade has a few fun offerings, and the Criterion cinema nearby has some interesting short-run offerings if you like that sort of thing. Bottom line: if it's a new movie, this is where I go to see it! Overall: 4.0 stars ----------- Pros: - Tickets are reasonably-priced, so long as you buy them in person. - Facility is clean and looks great all the time. - Parking is plentiful and easy. - They have alcohol... if you've got the money for it. - Lots of fun summer movie programs for kids, if you have any of them.
