My partner and I have been here several times now. Our latest visit was for the rescreening of One Battle After Another. I ordered the tickets online, which was a seamless experience. We sat in the middle and the reclining seats were fantastic. The sound wasn't too loud or too quiet, and the moviegoers were on their best behavior. The popcorn and drinks are highway robbery. Show me a theater where that's not the case nowadays, and I'll gladly go there instead. The ticket checker was the same older gentleman we have seen on our multiple trips. He is always kind and helpful, providing accurate directions to the theater entrance. He deserves a raise in wages. It's hard to find good help nowadays. I've only been to Byrd Theater outside of this place because Movieland has everything we need in a movie experience. I definitely recommend it. read more

I'm surprised I haven't left a review at this theater yet since I've been here multiple times! They have upgraded the seats to this amazingly comfortable reclining chairs with a swing table and cup holder! Heavenly! So comfy! The theaters are smaller than many other movies theaters, so we really enjoyed watching out movie in a smaller more intimate space. The concession counter was empty (we went to a matinee) so we breezed Ruth through! The popcorn was overly salty but still good and fresh. Our server was friendly and sweet. I started visiting this movie theater when I learned they have reclining seats. Since moving from South Florida this is something I missed in the movie theaters in the Richmond area. Movieland just underwent remodeling g and it looks great. They have an arcade area, duckpin bowling, and a large concession stand. Each time I've went was during times where business was slow, which is what I prefer. The seats are large and comfy and of course recline. The concession prices are just as expensive as other major theaters in the area. However, they do have discounts on Tuesdays on popcorn and movie tickets. My suggestion is to go during off peak hours to really enjoy the theater without the crowds. read more

If you haven't been to this theater in a while, then you don't know they're halfway through a renovation to upgrade... not only their screens, sound and seats (recliners), but the bathrooms too. And they're adding an arcade with duck pin bowling. What I love most is that they don't allow kids after 7pm. They used to have the criterion across the parking lot and played art house films there. The criterion isn't open anymore, but they still play the art house. Just my speed. I also host screenings here for film festivals, and they're really great to work with. My go to theater. Movieland is a large theater with ample parking. I was very impressed with their new seating. Each seat has heavy padding and fully reclines for exceptional comfort. The theater is very clean and the staff is very helpful. They have a nice concession stand, and I liked the fact that you could add butter to your popcorn yourself. read more

I had wonderful experience at this theatre going to see wicked for good last week. I really love the reclining seats and the little tray table for popcorn and snacks. I also want to shout out to the customer service employees. I left my phone in the theatre and when I came back a half hour later they were very polite and respectful and had me verify it was indeed my phone. And I respect that they did that. All in all I'd say my experience there was as good of a movie going experience I've ever had. read more

This is my go to movie theater in RVA, mostly because it's closest to me. I love the whole vibe of this theater because it used to be the Richmond Locomotive and Machine Works building. One of my favorite things about our city is how we transform old buildings into new things. Movieland does a good job of this with some homage to its previous owners. You are able to purchase tickets at a kiosk or with a cashier. They have assigned seating you can choose so you're guaranteed to have a specific spot. If you're ever worried you can always order your tickets online in advance. You can get discounted Tuesday tickets and discounts on concessions. There are women and men restrooms with a lot of stalls in them. The movie watching experience itself here isn't always the best. The screens are on the smaller side in some theaters and there have been times where the volume was off. It's an older theater, but it still plays great movies and is one worth visiting. read more

We used to go to this theater regularly, but stopped years ago as it declined. We thought we'd try it again after the recent renovation/remodel. IMO, here are the pros & cons. Pro: Friendly staff (concessions, ticket scans, etc) Food/Drink options Recliners w/moveable tray (plenty of room) Parking Con: Seat selection (you are not allowed to leave 1 seat as a buffer; it has to be 2 or more seats) Seating (there's space but they want to pack you in) TALKING (now this isn't on the theatre per say, but my family and I split theaters to see 2 different movies and we both had to deal with it) While the theater is great, we probably won't go again. Talking during the whole movie (not talking about engagement with the film) is a deal breaker. read more

management is a joke. bunch of idiots with a superiority complex. seems like they hire about anyone too, as i noticed most of the employees when i went were either high or doing nothing. They just stared at me blankly while taking my order. Everyone else who wasn't high seemed miserable. Is this what you want representing your company? On top of this, the bathrooms were disgusting.There was toilet paper everywhere and i don't even want to know WHAT smeared and splattered on the walls. I also noticed that the person who was making my food did not put gloves on, despite them being on the table next to them. I am very unsatisfied and I will not be coming back. I've been to other movielands in other states and they were wonderfully run, but this one seemed so far off from perfect that as a paying customer, I will no longer be returning. read more

I enjoy going to Movieland to see films; it is convenient and centrally located near Scott's Addition. It has ample parking in the lot, and usually is not too crowded. They don't have the reclining seats that some of the other theaters in the area have, but the chairs are comfortable enough. They serve all of the basic movie snacks, such as buttered popcorn, candy, and soda. The theaters are kept clean. Overall it is a no-frills way to see new movies. read more

We just had an absolutely horrible experience here. We came to see a 6:35 at 6:49 and were told that there was an unwritten policy that you cannot enter a show after 15 minutes- this has never been a policy and the "manager" on duty was rude and curt and offered no solutions. She confirmed the movie had absolutely started and it did not- not until ten more minutes, from the company we had inside who let us know. She lied she was rude she made up a policy she couldn't identify and lost business tonight and going forward. We will be sure to tell everyone NOT to go there. Excellent customer service. I had trouble with the kiosk & without even looking around a manager came to assist. (The screening room had been switched & kiosk couldn't be used.) He was extremely helpful, taking my payment at the service desk & getting me to the film just before it started. While the theater is in a bit of disarray due to current renovation, I didn't mind. I hadn't been to a movie in a year and a half and was a little disappointed by the state the theater was in. The staff were not the friendliest but that I can get over..but the disaster of the counters and bathrooms was little scary. Butter, popcorn, napkins, trash you name it was on the side counters where you go to make your popcorn or get napkins. It just wasn't touched in way too long and they had people walking around not even cleaning it. Simple wipe down is all it needed. The bathrooms were also pretty gross and not kept up with. As far as the theater it was fine and the same as usual. I did like selecting our own seats and having that taken care of prior to arriving. I think it needs some sprucing up even if it's getting sold or changed. read more

Honestly this theater is nothing to phone home about. So much so that I forgot to leave a review until reminded to by a Yelp email. It is a basic old school theater with basic seats that don't recline and it is honestly not the cleanest. The staff wasn't very pleasant either but I feel like that is common amongst lower "quality" movie theaters. All in all the screening of the movie (which was the point in going) was really good. My wife and I enjoy have date nights to the movies here whenever there's something good we want to see! I could grab some beers from the bar to get me through Barbie when she wanted to see it and she get her large popcorn for dinner every time we come! We generally order the tickets ahead of time online but it's great that there is a bar if we go as a date night and can grab some drinks while watching a movie or just get the standard movie theater snacks and drinks. We've never been disappointed, just keep in mind it is a normal theater so there are comfortable but regular seats and there's generally families and kids running around. read more

if u could leave 0 stars i would. i understand employees are tired as i also work long hours in customer service, but the attitude was completely unnecessary. i had just gotten off work and was meeting friends and happened to be 20 minutes late for a showing. the tickets were prepaid for and my friend came up front to give me mine, but the rude guest services employee informed me that my friend could go back into the movie but i couldn't, because i was later than 15 minutes for our 9:40pm showing. she was not apologetic at all for the inconvenience that is not even posted properly anywhere. terrible policy and terrible delivery of the rules on her part. like i said i understand you're tired but i was looking forward to the movie all day just for her to act like she couldn't care less about the disappointment. i wish i had said more but it seemed like there was nothing to be done to keep customers happy. read more

I have admittedly become very spoiled by a movie theater known to serve Bistro meals and cocktails prior to the movie starting. Unfortunately said movie theater lacks a lot of variety and does not usually offer early show times. So on a weekday day off, I decided to try out Movieland for an early showing of a film not playing anywhere else in Richmond. I have to say I have mixed emotions about this movie theater. It feels like an old school movie theater from late seventies early eighties, so plus one for nostalgia. Plus one for courteous employees. And plus one for showing early shows on a non-holiday weekday. That being said, I had a hard time finding the theater the film was to be shown in, the hallway was kinda dark, and as it turned out, this particular theater had a door that was not exactly lined up in the hallway. The theater numbers are too dark, in my opinion. The theater itself had stadium seating, many rows in the back and then several in the front. The seats were comfortable but there was a musty old smell, which contributed to that nostalgia feeling. This might not really be my first choice of a place to go see a movie but considering that they are showing movies that are not played in other theaters in the Richmond area and the great selection of movie times I would go here again. read more

There's an ideal movie theater experience and Richmond continues to deliver. That feeling that the whole town is there really comes across. We went to see a movie on a Tuesday and the parking lot was full at 10:40pm. It just makes the entire experience better knowing the place is packed. I've said it before and I'll say it again, stand alone theaters are better. Beyond the ambiance the theater itself was alright. But that's the norm in Richmond. The screen couldn't have been more than 25-30 feet. The kind of screen where you feel far away sitting in the top row near the back. Definitely not what I'm used to. However, the sound system was incredible. Featuring Dolby surround sound, you're immersed even if the screen isn't the biggest. Hearing songs blare through speakers in a movie theater is just a special experience. I've gone to updated theaters with reclining seats but I've rarely experience a sound system that nice. To sum it all up, this is definitely a theater worth going to. From the vibe to the sound, Movieland makes going to the movies an experience. read more

I mean good grief, we ALL go out to grocery stores, restaurants, malls and etc....but yet the movie theaters around here are still freaking closed? I mean what the heck people? We went here several times now and its wonderful, and spaced out and they take every precaution they are required to do to keep those doors open. We sat in a row all by ourselves (unnecessary) but still all by ourselves and each group was in every other row. It was also great to see the concession stand open. I was extremely disappointed in the way the customer services staff addressed a potential problem and how they treated me. Last night I went to see Pet Sematary here. About an hour and 15 minutes into the movie, two men walked in together, one in an arm sling. They looked around at the crowd for a good 15 seconds, and sat a large distance away from each other on opposite sides of the theatre. One of them sat behind my boyfriend and I. Then after a couple of minutes, they got up again and were staring at my boyfriend and I. Then one of them let the theatre. This made me very uneasy because of recent shootings happening around the country. I left the theatre to talk to customer service. As I was walking to the desk, a couple behind me stopped me and asked me if I was in the Pet Sematary movie theatre. I said yes, and they also were on their way to say something to customer services about the men. When I got up to the desk with the couple I talked to, I explained to the woman working about the problem and how I was scared. She seemed annoyed with me and said she could not refund my ticket. I told her I did not want a refund, I wanted someone to go check the theatre to make sure it was safe for everyone inside. The couple also expressed their uneasiness. After arguing with her for a good 5 minutes, she rolled her eyes at me and went into the theatre. Another man working at the desk asked if he could help me. I explained the situation again and he did not say anything back to me and kept working... also seemed to have the same annoyed attitude. The couple who was with me were so upset that they ended up just walking out of the facility. I know I will not be coming back to this movie theatre as safety is not a priority here as well as making the customer feel welcomed and comfortable. read more

I Love this place!! I really enjoy the lofty industrial vibes I get when I come here. This place used to be a former locomotive assembly plant and you can definitely feel that when you are there. The facility is clean and has tons of self check in options which I love. The service at the concession stand is consistently slow. The employees never seem to have any real sense of urgency when scooping that popcorn no matter how long the line is!! Overall this is a really great location to see a movie. read more

For me going to a movie is a sacred experience. For years I hated my life and my only escape was going to a movie to immerse myself in another world for 2 hours. Movieland is my local theater so I tend to go to it pretty often. The parking lot at Movieland is big but can be a little frustrating to navigate. It can be difficult to find parking close to the theater as well. When entering the theater, I really enjoy the self-service kiosk because it saves me the embarrassment of having to tell the usher that I am seeing a movie alone. Additionally, it appears no one under the age of 40 knows how to use the self-service kiosks so it really cuts down on the line. One unique thing I like to call out is that seats are first come first serve here. Unlike many other theaters in the area where you have to purchase tickets ahead of time to guarantee premium seating, at Movieland your seating is based on when you arrive. I enjoy how the ticket taker pretends not to notice as I sneak in candy and drinks from the dollar store. I really appreciate how they pretend to just accept that my body is built like Quasimodo while bulges filled with raisinettes and peach rings arise in abnormal places. This brings me to my first real complaint about Movieland. There are no dividers between the urinals in the main men's room. I like to go into a movie with an empty tank as I like to wet my whistle during the comic book based movie I am seeing. It is baffling to me that in 2019 they have not got the memo that no one likes urinals without dividers. Do the right thing Movieland, come on. The experience is normally pretty good at Movieland. The chairs recline slightly, the floors are only a little bit sticky and the screens look good. I would like to have some more roaming ushers throughout the theaters to silence the other patrons. Overall Movieland gets the job done but there is nothing special that differentiates it from any other theater. read more

This is a really nice theater. The staff are friendly. The various screening areas are kept well and seats don't have indentations for a lot of use. The concession stand was a mess and the trash was overflowing. The women's bathroom smelled like urine and had been trashed.
