A lovely community theatre, welcoming staff, an intimate setting in a cozy size playhouse. A great experience, the actors did a great job, and parking is very convenient. This place is tucked back in the woods near a small county- owned ball park. The parking lot is a little ways from the door, so if you have an elderly or handicap person you may want to drive up near the entrance and put them out, then go park your car. I recently had the chance to check out "Flyin' West" written by Pearl Cleage/directed by Estelle Miller. Such a great production! The story takes place in 1898 with a group of African-American women who settled, together, in a town called Nicodemus, Kansas, following the end of the Civil War, many former slaves, fed up with the pressures of the South, took a risk and traveled out to the Wild Wild West to build new lives for themselves and their families. You can't beat $20 for a ticket and many times BCT partners with Goldstar.com and you can get discounted tickets. BCT also features a Murder Mystery Troupe that performs a murder mystery play once a month. BCT also supports local actors opening up auditions to everyday people who want to tap into their inner thespian. Yes, lots goin' on in this little place. The playhouse is small about 20 rows, great because you can hear and see everything! BCT sells candy, chips, and beverages before, during, and after the shows. It's a community theatre and not many people know about it because it's waaaaaay back in the woods of the White Marsh Park in Bowie, MD. If you know where Sport Fit is in Bowie, you're almost there; you just have to keep driving straight as you pass their parking lot. The bad part is you have to park out by the trails and walk down the road a little ways to get there - so bring your walking shoes and bring your mace and/or taser. Or bring a friend, that's a little easier. BCT is home to 2 theatre companies: 2nd Star Productions and Bowie Community Theatre that take turn producing plays each season one right after the other. 2nd Star does a lot of musicals, but they also do all kinds of shows. BCT sticks with mostly comedies, but also does dramas. The most popular shows as of late are the adult comedies. By adult comedy I mean, lots of sexual innuendos, lingerie, partial nudity and awkward situations...can be a good time. What's great is the theatre was just renovated, so the lobby looks very nice, which is a refreshing change from their dank, mildewy and slightly creepy vibe they had before. You could almost hear that screeching music from the shower scene in Psycho if you walked out there alone. But it's better now. Tickets are generally $15 per person. They give discounts to senior citizens and students and depending on the show, veterans. The only kind of annoying thing is you can pay by credit card if you pay in advance, but you have to pay in cash if you just show up. Bring a couple bucks for snacks during intermission. All in all, I'd say BCT can be a good source for an alternate form of entertainment. Granted the shows can be hit or miss, but I have seen a couple of good ones here. Sometimes the actors will be extremely talented and hilarious. It's not uncommon to have at least one professional actor visiting - not that they're well-known, just good. Some of the shows performed can be really enjoyable. I recommend going to the website and reading the play synopsis to see if the play sounds interesting or funny to you before you go. Other than that, $15 and 2 hours of wasted time isn't too high of a price to pay if you don't like it. But if you do, you've got yourself a great bargain and an experience worth remembering. read more

Bowie Community Theatre - Performing Arts Near Me - Bowie, Maryland

I am writing a review to clarify a few mistakes on the above review. This person has gotten BCT confused with The Bowie Playhouse (the venue where BCT performs). Bowie Community Theatre is an all-volunteer community theatre that performs at The Bowie Playhouse located at 16500 White Marsh Park Drive in White Marsh Park. The Bowie Playhouse is owned and operated by the City of Bowie. Three different community theatre use (rent) The Bowie Playhouse as their venue: Bowie Community Theatre, Prince George's Community Theatre and 2nd Star Productions. The Bowie Playhouse is NOT owned by BCT or any of these other groups. If you have any problems with parking or the facility itself, you should contact the City of Bowie. As far as the parking situation: yes, you need to park a short ways from the Playhouse. There are parking spots for the handicapped closer to the Playhouse. The walk is not terrible and I have walked it many times and never felt that my life was as any risk. It's actually rather nice. Telling people to bring mace or a taser is just plain ridiculous!!! In any situation, you should be aware of your surroundings and pay attention. That said, the park rangers patrol the area regularly. I have never seen anyone even remotely dangerous. I've seen boy scout troops, parents watching their children play football, and people walking the trails with their pets and getting some exercise (imagine that!). read more
