I'm typically intimidated when I enter a barbershop, however to my surprise as I entered this barbershop I was greeted by a warm welcome. There were no barbers available to cut my hair immediately I made an appointment for later that afternoon, again as I entered the 2nd time I was acknowledged and directed to the barber chair. I still cut my hair for the most part, but for special occasions (especially this holiday season), I do seek professionals. I have been coming to this location for about half a year now for the weddings I have attended, the holidays, and special trips. The barber shop itself has nothing that makes it stand out, but it's clean, it has some flat screen TVs and there is always good conversation going on. I do enjoy the family feel that it gives off, as all the customers seem to be regulars and are always wishing each other well. Art is the barber my friend recommended, and he has cut my hair every time so far. Honestly I have not been disappointed by each turn out. He definitely knows what he's doing, and he is always around at the time I schedule. I occasionally have to wait a couple minutes for him to finish up with the person before me, and if he is ever running late he texts me to let me know. That's much appreciated! I've been going to Bowie Town Barbers consistently for about five years now. Although I've moved from Bowie, I keep coming back so that I can get my cut from Art Hood. He is personable, professional, and gets to know his clientele. He is always available via text to schedule a quick appointment. Most of the previous reviews are a few years old. I went to this place yesterday 7/2/2019 as a walk-in. Believe you me, I will never go back. Its dirty (not talking about old school style barber shop cause that does equate to dirt). All the barbers were dirty and scruffy looking, except for the female whose chair was close to the door. My barber was very unprofessional in his chairside manner, stopping while cutting to stand in the common area watching and commenting on sports. My haircut was okay, he but too much off the top. Why would the owner represent his business this way with unkept looking employees. Come on, today, nowadays, customer service is looked at very seriously. This shop has great barbers, but unfortunately it lacks professionalism. Appointments are not kept on time and when I recently walked in to discuss an issue with the manager concerning the inability to schedule adequate appointments with one of his barbers, there was no accountability taken. I was never asked about the issue I was having as the consumer and they didn't seem to care much. The first barber offered me her card and was cordial while the individual who supposedly runs the shop offered no solution. I have always strived to support black businesses but this is one that needs to be restructured starting from those in charge. As a consumer you want your money to be spent at a place that cares about how you feel and takes care of you. This place will not do that. read more

So, as the temperature dropped, I started to grow my hair out to combat the cold. I usually cut my hair myself because I can't see paying someone $20.00 a week to cut my hair. It's easy to cut a low hair do but I need professional help when my hair gets longer. I lived in MD years ago and used to frequent this barbershop, so I figured I'd give it a try. It's located in the Bowie Towncenter. When I walked in I recognized a barber who used to do my hair 9 years ago. Unfortunately he was busy so I went to the first open chair. I told him I was growing my hair out so I didn't want it cut low. He said...."so you want a shape up?" I thought for a second and then visually showed him the areas I needed cut. He then said...."oh, so you want a temple taper?" I told him I don't know what he's talking about but just clean it up and make it look good. (Didn't know barbershops had their own jargon!) 5 minutes (well maybe 10) and a few turns of the chair later I felt like Prince Akeem from coming to America when he got his braid cut off. And the barber said the same thing....."that'll be $20.00 please!" I thought he was going to say....."this is beautiful, what is this velvet?" I couldn't believe it.....he really didn't do much yet charged me $20.00! The sign says they accept debit/credit.....but that's not the case. I had to walk to Safeway to get change! To be fair to the other barbers, I won't give this 1 stars, because I'm sure I just got unlucky with who happened to be open when I walked in. I asked for a fade on the sides and to trim A QUARTER off the top. I will say, the fade on the sides was pretty clean. He did a really good job there. But when he was done and showed me that mirror I was mortified. Dude LEFT maybe a third instead of REMOVING a quarter. A year of growth gone just like that. Honestly, if I had just gone in there to get a fade, and leave the top, it would've been five stars. He was fast and good. The thing is, when I ask most barbers for a trim, they'll trim a little, show it to me, and ask if I want more. Repeat until I have my desired length, that way there's no possibility of a misunderstanding. This was the guy on the left side of the room, with glasses, headphones, and a full beard. Maybe longer hair isn't his strong suit, I get that. But at least make it abundantly clear, or take the proper precaution to make sure I don't get screwed over. read more

Bowie Town Barbers is the best hairstylist around. My favorite is Kristi Toney, who's been styling my (older white male) hair for several years now. I'm very particular, but I never have to give Kristi any instructions. She gets it perfect every time. She considers herself an artist at her trade, and she really is. We called ahead of time on Sunday to see if they were open and they said until 3pm, so off we went, walked in and my son got a super haircut from Ms. Kristi. It needed a good cut as it had been a while and she got it just right for him -- thin on the sides, longer on top. The atmosphere is old style barber shop as it is a big room with guys sitting about reading the paper, several TVs going and a lot of guys in chairs getting trims etc. Note they don't take credit cards! Clients beware, they charged or rather a barber charged my son 25 dollars for a edge up and the sides cut...all because he was 13....get the f... outta here...boy I was pissed and to top it all off,the change smelled like weed...don't go here bcos I never will again. I've been coming here since I was in elementary school. I've moved twice and still only trust my barbers at Bowie town barbers to touch my hair. BTB has always had excellent service, great professionalism and a safe environment for all ages. My barber Art has been cutting my hair for years now and has always done an excellent job. When I make appointments they are always fulfilled on time and if I'm in a rush he's swift with getting me in & out without trying to rush through my cut. Hands down, this barbershop is the best and I question the negative reviews which is probably based on a 1 time visit with unrealistic expectations. On a CONSISTENT basis for months now, I have witnessed a "kid friendly" and professional environment. The barbershop is clean and the emphasis is on making sure that customers are served once they step foot in the shop. All of the barbers are very hospitable and go the extra mile to greet all people regardless of whether they are clients by appointment or walk-ins. Ms. Kristi, one of the barbers, has been cutting my boys' hair, and I am impressed with her precision and attention to detail. She is also flexible and is willing to work around her appointment schedule to accomodate your schedule. She takes her time cutting my boys. Most importantly, my sons are satisfied with their cuts. I visited this barbershop for what was supposed to be a one time thing in 2013, for a crisp cut for my college graduation. I went to Art, and I got superb service with an ever better cut. It was more than I expected and I have been a regular client ever since. He is very personable, professional and his customer service tips the scale.
