I just had an overwhelmingly positive experience ordering custom plates from Boxcar to make letterpress invitations, the whole process was delightful. Their website is really helpful and full of links and tips that even a beginner can understand, then when you don't they are available to take questions via phone or e-mail. They aren't condescending even though they're total pros, it was so pleasant. I uploaded my design at 2am and the plate was shipped to me by that afternoon with a couple e-mails here and there to let me know the status of my order/shipping info. I'm really not impressed with how they handled international shipping for some plates I had ordered while on a printmaking residency in Canada. I was charged an additional customs fee, which is perfectly fine, but no indication on their website that this would happen. Additionally since I had them ship these plates to the residency coordinator to sign for (before I arrived there) they ended up sending her the invoice along with what I'd consider a pretty jerky message. Heres some advice BoxCar, send the invoice to the person who was billed (ME) so that I can go ahead pay that so that you don't have to harass people who don't owe you any money. read more

I used Boxcar for our first line of greeting cards. They did 24 designs in just 2.5 weeks. Just delivered well in time for a trade show we participating in. Additionally, some of the designs included letterpress printing on both sides and successfully minimized imprint show-through which is a tricky thing to do in the business. Not sure how anyone could have anything negative to say about the quality of Boxcar's printing or their customer service. Everyone knows Zappos is the Gold Standard of Customer Service. Well, I'd say Boxcar is the Zappos of the letterpress world. First I ordered plates and they double checked my order and it turns out I ordered the wrong type so they helped me dodge that bullet. Plates cam. Looked awesome. But this was my first attempt at letterpress printing and I quickly realized I was way over my head. To make matters worse, I was doing my daughter's Wedding Invitations!! So, I sent an email asking for help. Boy, did they help. I sent them the paper and the inks I had purchased. They had to make new plates, of course, but they kept in constant communication, sent tracking numbers, kept me updated on schedules, etc. Finally, last Friday UPS dropped off the box of invites.OMG... GORGEOUS!! They even sent me an email saying how nice MY design was! My only conclusion about seeing Zak L's and Nelly D's one and two star ratings is, maybe you get what you give? I don't know, but these people are amazing and I highly recommend them to anyone. As a matter of fact, my son is getting married in 10 months. Take a guess who is doing the letterpress printing? Mary, Anthony, and all the folks over at Boxcar Press are the very greatest! I had the boneheaded, masochistic idea to teach myself Adobe Illustrator to design my own wedding invitations and then send them off to get letterpressed. Of course, I didn't know the first thing about bleeds, bitpmaps, grayscale, vector files, or any of the finer points of graphic design for letterpress. The guys over at Boxcar were so immensely patient and helpful: they mailed me several samples of papers and inks, responded to my many emails promptly and with good humor, and even took pity on me and did some of the final design stuff themselves (for free!). If they were at all annoyed by my amateurishness, complete lack of understanding of graphic design, and many, many questions, they never showed it. And best of all, the invitations came out absolutely gorgeous!!! All for a very, very reasonable price, I might add (comparable to plain old embossed invites).
