I really enjoy this gym but I have a request to those who use the women's adult locker room. Please don't bring your phone into the sauna and make me listen to your show. Please don't talk on your phone on speaker or have full on conversations on your cell like you are the only one in the room. The locker rooms are not monitored. I have witnessed a teenage boy in the sauna with his mom in the ADULT WOMENS locker room. I have had to contend with a 3 year old little girl running up and down the isles screaming as her mom talked on the phone. I love children. I work with them all day and have lots of patience. When I'm done with work I would really love to relax in the adult locker room and sauna. Where is the respect for other people? Please be considerate of others and be aware of your enviomment. read more

Nice place with nice people. I only have two small critics: one, many of the men in the men's adult locker room use their cell phones in the locker room and some use their phones in the steam and sauna. I don't really care much myself unless there talking loud but it real bothers some other men. My second critic is that the water control in the handicap shower (on left) has not worked right for 2 years!! I have burnt myself a couple times with the hot water (not serious) and it is an easy fix. I have asked several times to get it fixed and it still remains broken. read more

I have such mixed opinions about Brace Y. Some of the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable while others are cold and clearly not qualified to be fitness instructors. As a retired nurse it is always worrisome that people who are not very educated can be giving health advice and direction on how to exercise. I have observed instructors giving poor advice and not correcting moving form that could be harmful to a member. I know it may be difficult to find highly knowledgeable trainers, group fitness instructors and water fitness instructors but it would be tragic if a member was injured due to poor guidance from the trainers/instructors. I do like the facility over all. read more

Cancelled a membership at a "big" chain gym to come back here. Glad to be back. Major renovations were done and the space is more open, allows for more lighting, nicer flow from area to area, plenty of disinfectant wipes/paper towel stations, and a positive family atmosphere. There is allot of machines of all kinds. Could feel like a maze, but the more you visit, the easier you know where to go. There is more than just the machine rooms- gym, saunas, pools, etc.. I am not an expert on anything pertaining to gym or fitness, but I do appreciate polite staff, a clean facility, and an impactful community/business model that goes beyond fitness. At the end of the day, despite paying more $ for a family membership, I know I can bring my kids to enjoy what the facility offers them, get a good variety of workouts in, by myself or in the group classes, and that my membership is an investment in the community at large. read more

This Y is awesome. There are classes of every kind (yoga, barre, Pilates, cardio, weights, Zumba, cycle, and more) for all skill levels. The schedule offers a lot of variety with classes starting at 5 a.m. and going into the evening. The newly-renovated cardio and weight rooms are great. The equipment is well maintained and clean. I can always find an open elliptical or treadmill to use. I like that childcare is available so I can work-out even when my kids are not in school. The little kids' Childwatch gets super busy in the summer. Sometimes there is a line to drop off kids and it may make you late for class. My kids love the indoor and outdoor pools. The outdoor pools offers lots of space for smaller kids. The pool is busier on weekends. If you arrive at pool break (10 mins to the hour), you can almost always get on open lounge chair. The facility is clean and they staff lots of lifeguards for safety. read more

Great staff and clean environment! It's only 2 minutes from home so I'm here all the time. It does get crowded but so do many other gyms. I absolutely love working in the outdoor grass area as well. They have lots of great machines and plenty of weights to lift from too! read more

My type of facility, can I just say I LOVE MY Y?? I call it My Y because it makes me feel like I'm part of the family ( Y Family). After my family relocated to the South we were so discouraged regarding health facilities after being spoiled by LifeStyle fitness up North 24 hour greatness, extremely clean and tons of amenities including a spa and restaurant. We decided to join the Y due to the multiple locations and the ability to always have a facility available while out and about. This location is not where we joined but we decided to visit shortly thereafter and I fell in LOVE mostly because I was expecting and this facility offered a Moms in Motion class taught by the most talented Heather. This class is for anyone of all levels not pregnant, currently pregnant and post partum. The BEST part is once you have your baby you can bring the baby to class with you ( SCORE ) and still get your workout on. I also discovered the aqua aerobics class and it was not your granny aerobics it was perfect and high energy. The Wednesday morning class at 9am was my favorite. Enjoy... read more

Not impressed. My tour of the facility was scheuled online and I received confirmation via email. When I arrived, they were surprised by my "scheduled" tour. The tour guide was less than professional and seemed to want to get it over quickly. No one offered to show me how to use the equipment or even asked if I needed help. I had to research who I could contact to help get me started. The equipment room (especially the free weights area) was very crowded all the time. The space felt too small for the number of people. This is the Y location I "should" be going to, but I'm about equidistant to 3 different Y locations. The Siskey branch is very family oriented and has a ton of amenities. They are undergoing renovations - just added a yoga room and are expanding their child watch center.... All the renovations are proof of how active and responsive this Y branch is to it's patrons. read more

Great place to work out, accomodates lots of different interests, ages, fitness levels, and offers reduced rates for people with a lower income. I regularly go to different Yoga and Pilates classes and such things, which are free for members. The instructors are generally nice and are good at what they do, and during the week the classes are not crowded. The age group here is a little higher than I expected, very few people in their 20s. Classes are open to anyone, you don't have to go regularly and they're easy to follow from day one. The pool is great, but usually very crowded - unless you chance it on a day with predicted thunderstorms. They close down the pool when a storm draws near, so many people won't bother to go. The fitness rooms are also always crowded but never to the point where you can't find the exercise equipment you want. As for cleanliness and newness of the place, I'm very happy! It all looks great and the members generally do their best to help maintain it that way. read more

I honestly don't know why this place gets such great reviews...other than the fact that the people that work there are super nice!! There is one large and cut up room with cardio, machines and free weights but its really busy and you always have to wait for things. The weights are old school, which is fine..but just not new! The facility is nice, although I don't use anything besides the weight room. I'm sure it's a great gym, but if you go for lifting/cardio and that's it...there are other alternatives that I think are a lot better. read more

This is the best YMCA in the Charlotte area...hands down. The staff is so wonderful, and accommodating. There are a number of machines, and free weights at your disposal, and lots of cardio equipment. Back to the staff. They are so friendly, and it gives this branch that special "we are family" atmosphere. The managers will work with you if you have problems with your membership with no questions at all. They are very understanding of situations, problems that may occur. They are also very knowledgeable of their place of business. Ask anyone at the front desk about a class, and they won't pull out a brochure, they will tell you who teaches the class, and the times. They greet you with a warm smile, and a friendly,"hello," when you walk through the door. Now I have been to nearly every Y in Charlotte, and I don't think any has a power lifting platform. That makes the Siskey the only one in the area. If you deadlift, barbell row, power clean, clean and jerk, or snatch, you will need a platform, and rubber bump plates. Yes, the Siskey is the only Y that I know of that has these items. You may have a wait on your hands, but be patient, stay warm, and you will be on it in no time. All in all, Dowd, Harris, McCrorey, Johnston, well, let's just all of the other Ys in Charlotte can't hold a torch to the Siskey's fun, family atmosphere. It's almost like Cheers where everyone knows your name. Customer service, cleanliness, atmosphere, equipment, classes are all A+. Come to the Siskey. You won't regret it. read more

This is by far better than any YMCA I'm used to. I mean they have a water park! Are you kidding me?! Friendly staff, full schedule and the classes are nice and challenging. I love that the hours are pretty flexible to fit my crazy schedule except on Sundays when they don't open until noon but hey this is the south! Gotta get your church on! There is something fun for the whole family. My teenager plays basketball, my 5 year old place soccer and the 3 year old enjoys swimming and in addition to the many classes, I enjoy moms mornings out where I can drop off my youngest and run errAnds for 3 hours ($25). I do wish they offered more programs for the 3 year old during the day. It's great that they offer child are while I work out but my some would love to actually work out or play a sport too. The facilities are well maintained which is great and if you want a private workout they do have equipment in the lady's locker room which is a nice alternative. read more

I have enjoyed taking the Step class on Wednesday at Siskey. The instructor is a beast but I have worked up to keeping up with her. The class will give you a full-fledged workout. The facility also has an indoor track that is upstairs and circles the gym. They have a number of exercise rooms which makes alternate classes available. The Zumba class is also a blast. That instructor is a fireball! This is one of the nicer facilities although I don't think the weight room is large enough. They also have a steam room and sauna in the male/female locker rooms. read more

This YMCA is super close to my house so I go frequently. They recently underwent a full gym renovation and are about to start on locker room/sauna/yoga studio reno so I'm pretty excited to see the finished product there. Main complaint is there never seems to be enough squat racks and they really should get another weighted barbell set for the flex space in the cardio area as the space they are currently in is very small and difficult to navigate through. Also the air seems to frequently be an issue- it's typically hot and muggy. That being said, they have lots of great equipment and I'm glad they decided to renovate as the space is much more functional now. read more

Expansive YMCA with everything you come to expect from a top-flight gym. It's only rival really is the Harris Y in South Park. The primary work out room has dozens of machines, and turnover is high so you're rarely waiting to work out, even during rush hours. Another nice thing about this gym is the relatively low number of meat head types crushing bench presses in the free weight section. Definitely a more family oriented atmosphere here which makes gym visits much more palatable. If you don't know about it already, for members, you can drop your kids off for day care while you work out. It's a great feature of your membership! read more

What a joke this place is! Coach Julius M played my son for 8 min in a finals play off soccer game when there was 1 hour 15 min in and promised him more playing time numerous times. The YMCA handbook and all his emails clearly stated he would play all children for half of the games minimum for REC soccer. He is also incredibly intimidating and manipulative and wrote very inappropriate emails to me and made me feel intimidated as a young woman. The YMCA should fire this coach immediately as no one this crazy and dishonest needs to be working with children. What a psycho. He also coaches with his mom. How weird and inappropriate for a grown man to coach with a parent and then give parenting advice. The staff also never email back with concerns or address any sort of discrimination in their practices. Take your business elsewhere. You would think at the very least a coach could just follow basic handbook rules. I.e. the same goalie can not play an entire game. But they don't follow the rules at this YMCA. read more

Not sure what the objective was with the current remodeling but this doesn't feel like a gym anymore and the staff at the front are not as friendly . Sigh , sometimes change isn't good . If it's not broke don't fix it . New equipment and fresh paint would've worked just fine . read more

Great YMCA that is family friendly with good staff that is friendly. It's my second home and feel like the people I see there are family. It's not the biggest Y but has everything I need and what most need to workout. It is usually pretty crowded on most days all day. The my recently renovated it which is nice. read more

One of the biggest Ys in the southern Charlotte region, with lots of great classes. Siskey is not the closest Y for me to get to, but I end up here a lot since the class schedule is so accommodating. There are classes going on practically any time of day so you're bound to find something going on even if you have a hard time working it into your schedule. They also have unique classes here that other Ys don't offer. While pregnant I loved 'Moms on the Move' where I was lifting and stepping all the way through 9 months with an instructor who was trained to work with preggos and postpartum moms, so I knew if I started to overdo it she'd reel me back in. (on a fun side note, you can expect to find new mommies squatting and lunging with their little infants in hand! Hey, that's extra weight we're lifting!) For older kids there are great programs at this Y and a nice big day care facility which was recently updated and renovated. But you don't need to have kids to enjoy Siskey. They have a heated indoor pool with swimming lanes for adults and a great track and athletic field out front. The equipment is mostly top of the line and there are usually plenty of machines available in the largest gym room. There are constantly training groups being coordinated whether you need some motivation to train for that first 5K, or you want to meet some new pals training for your 10th marathon. The place is so big it can be a little hard to navigate, but the staff is so friendly you only need to ask someone to point you in the right direction and they'll insist on walking you directly to where you want to go. If you're looking for a gym, or if you're already Y member, it's worth a visit! read more

I've been a member at this y for 11 years. Unfortunately, the best group exercise instructors have left over the last several months. There are great instructors at other YMCAS, so not sure what's going on with the leadership here. I feel that this Y now caters to an elderly demographic instead of supporting ALL fitness levels. Bummed because this has been my home gym for so long. Time to move on until Siskey can step it up. :( read more

Love this y. There is a great waterpark, camp, fitness and aquatic facility. My kids play soccer here in spring and fall. We love the y.

I have been going here for several years and really liked the location and the fact that they had lots of equipment to keep the pace moving. A lot has changed in the last year or two. They just went through a recent renovation, while the facility looks nice it has cut back on functionality. They also chose to do this renovation in December and January, DUMB move, it derailed a lot of fitness goals. THANKS. It seems that membership has grown significantly and instead of adding more equipment to help keep the crowds moving they consistently remove key items that everyone uses. The had three cable equipment stations, we now have one and there are always people fighting to get on it. There were three awesome little units for stretching low back, arms and legs there is now one. Went from two each abdominal and low back machines to one each, again people are always fighting to use these. They have a room that is used primarily used for stretching and some cardio machines that is half empty, this room should be stocked full of equipment. There are rarely people stretching in this vast amount of space. They bought a huge new "rig" that barely anyone uses and is in a room all by itself, sell it and buy some more cable machines, benches and abdominal machines. They seem to be catering to the elderly, which is fine, but there has to be a balance between the elderly, who use the gym as social spot to sit on machines talking & texting and those of us who have precious little time to work out and who rely on this spot to stay fit. Unfortunately, there are few options in Matthews to work out and it's getting progressively more difficult to work out at Siskey. Please look at some of the functional issues and don't worry about the cosmetics, many of us would rather less new carpet and paint and more equipment. read more

Omfg! This place is freaking busy. Like it's too annoying! Which is fine but I am limited on my hrs because of daycare! Also, this place closes so dang early! 930 and 6 on weekends. I make it work. Also, the patrons that frequent here are disgusting! Changing in the restroom after their shower, pissing all over the seat! I'm born and raised in CA so I've come across my fair share of people ( LA is huge!) I've never encounter so many gym goers with a lack of regard for other patrons. It's so sad it's disgusting!
