This has been my home gym for about 3 years. Overall, I've been satisfied with my membership here. When I attended the workout classes regularly, I was able to meet great people and build community. The instructors and other members were welcoming. In recent times, there have been several renovations and upgrades to the facility including a remodel of the lobby area, installation of digital monitors, new flooring, renovated basketball court, and new flooring in locker rooms. I have a nationwide membership so I'm able to access facilities when I am away from my neighbor. While it doesn't offer 24 hour access, the hours of operation are sufficient and there's usually a local branch when I'm away from home. read more

I decided to checkout the YMCA to see if I wanted to get a membership there and I must say there are a lot of perks to having a membership! Lower cost for certain activities for one! The best part is that you can work out at any Y in the greater Charlette area under the same membership! The gyms are clean, modern and have updated new equipment, there's a fitness track, basketball and tennis court, heated pool which was supposed to be 82 degrees but was a little chilly, sauna and my favorite "the steam room," I felt like s new woman when I left there! There's so many things to do at the Y for kids and adults, including aqua classes, dance classes, exercise classes, sports programs, camps and more! The cost of a memberships varies on your income and although it's a little costly I think it's worth it! read more

My daughter was injured by being struck in the face by a toy from another child, she lost 2 teeth as a result (neither made it home) they didn't bother calling me, and had her last name incorrect on the report (sister in law sent me a picture at pickup). When my sister in law picked her up along with her daughter they told her about the accident, my daughter clothing was stained with her blood, and asked to have me call. I called, left a message, and never received a call back. I will NOT be sending her back to summer camp there ever again. I have never dealt with such carelessness and disregard. And it is VERY concerning that they did not have her name on the report correct. Was there another child with my daughters first name and they mixed them up? Would they have released her to someone who was not in my daughters approved list for pickup!? Scary. read more

This YMCA is pretty big and they have a vast amount of machines here. However, the machines they have older than the YMCA I visit more frequently. The machines here do not have their own individual TV's. The locker rooms are big and nice for the most part. Some of the lockers are run down but I do also appreciate that they have a family locker room. A child over 6 cannot be in the locker room of the opposite sex. So if i bring my son to the YMCA to go swimming - it is expected that I would have to let him go into the Men's by himself. See this issue? So having the family locker room really helps with that. We love the swim park that is open during the summer months here and is honestly the only reason we visit this location now. (And the only reason for 3 stars). If I want to exercise, this is not the place/environment for me. You go to the gyms, where people come just to show off and not actually work out? Yeah, this is one of those places. There was a couple that was constantly kissing on one visit. I didn't understand that. I mean not just a peck on the cheek. They were long and very sexual. And the YMCA is supposed to be a family friendly environment. read more

They need to clean the machines daily. One treadmill had a drink spilled on it Tuesday. When I went today Friday the same white dried up spill was there. I pay over $80 a month and not ok with lack of sanitization. read more

My weekend workout spot. This is a full service gym complete with childcare, group classes, basketball court, outside track, indoor pool(swim lessons) and a cool outside water park in the summer. Just remember to bring your towel as they eliminated towel service some time ago. read more

Ever since my office moved up to the University area, this is my "go to" Y during the week. Even though I missed the convenience of the Y's downtown - Childress & Dowd, this one is a good replacement and it saves me from driving downtown for a workout. Recently I have picked up swimming in the mornings before work... well it's better described as "systematic drowning". The pool lifeguard is super friendly. She was even giving me tips on my form. If I think about it more I think she was "concerned" about me so... hence the tips. I've got a ways to go before I am Michael Phelps, but I am glad the Univ City Y is helping me on my way to the Olympics (j/k). This Y is as large as the other branches in the area and has lots of family programs - after school care, etc that you can take advantage of while getting your burn on. Every thing is kept clean and maintained - the staff is there for you when you need them. The parking lot leaves a little to be wanted, but it is functional (if people follow the one way signs). At least the Y is off of a side street (not directly on WT Harris), but you have to time it right less you get caught in the traffic nightmare that happens there every rush hour twice a day. read more

There are better and worse Y's for sure. This place is nothing compared to Dowd or Davidson, but it does the job. I would give another star, but I've just been told they are raising the already high price. Plus, people don't seem to understand the one way signs in the parking lot, or just the parking lot in general. I've def been honked and yelled at for following the rules. The front desk help are always pleasant, once you get to them. I normally don't have the best of interactions with other patrons while waiting in line, but that seems to be the idea on this side of town. The locker rooms are decent, nothing special. Plenty of open lockers most times of the day. You will rarely find yourself solo in the sauna or steam rooms. I've only swam here once, I need to get on that. I've never used the basketball courts or anything outside. I stick to the weight room. I have never had to wait on a bike or a treadmill. If I'm looking for a stair climber that can be another story though. The bikes are no where near as nice as the Dowd. The only thing I ever have to wait on are the free weights. There's plenty of weights, but not much room at all to use them. If you want a lay down bench, you will probably have to wait, especially at peak hours. All in all, it is what it is. Its close, so this is where I go. Plus, there is a 24 hour Harris Teeter right there where nobody looks at you funny for being sweaty in gym clothes. But, If somebody calls me asking if I want to go to a nicer location, I do. read more

After getting turned down by Fitness Connection i came here and Mr. Saad happily helped me with my free trial and offered me other options for when i do stay longer! the customer service is excellent and they are definitely military friendly! read more

I chose the Y for one reason and one reason only... it is the closest gym to my house and therefore requires the least amount of motivation/effort to drag myself there. The membership price is a little high for someone who really only uses the gym facilities and an occasional fitness class. However, I suppose I am paying for all the other equipment and services that I don't use. The membership price is done on a sliding scale. I am a graduate student and POOR so the membership price is fine for me. However, I don't think it's worth what they want to charge you if you make any kind of money. They have an outdoor pool and "water park" area during the summer, an outdoor track, an indoor pool, a gymnasium, an indoor track, a fitness class studio/room, and a gym with machines and weights. The fitness machines are nice and they do a very good job of taking care of any issues that arise pretty quickly. I am often in the gym and see a maintenance/contractor coming in to fix a machine that has an issue. The fitness instructors that run the classes are nice - though sometimes I question their training/knowledge/expertise. Although most in the classes are doing it mostly for recreation. The facility itself is sufficient but it is not new or modern. I have heard some of the other branches of the YMCA are much nicer. This branch has everything that I need, however some of the areas like the locker rooms could use a face-lift. read more

As I normally consume lots of chocolate, University YMCA has became one of favorite places. The service here is awesome, showers are clean, and never anyone on the indoor track when I go for my late morning runs. The complimentary coffee is also a plus. Looking forward to summer, because I learned to swim via private swim instructions with a patient instructor here this winter. The best part about joining this particular YMCA is the helpfulness of the staff. They truly care and are always helpful. I wish I could take my swimming instructor with me back to the Bahamas. Terrible class schedule. There is classes at noon and then a huge break until 4 pm. For how expensive this membership is, it doesn't really include much. The schedule is garbage and I'm always having to drive to the Dowd. Now the Dowd is having renovations and also closed their schedule for 4 hours. What a joke!!!!!!!!!!! read more

I joined this facility because it was conveniently close to my house. They have a decent amount of equipment to train on and weights are there like any other gym. Thumbs up on the indoor track. The basketball courts are available and there are fitness classes always going on. The only reason that I don't give this place 5 stars is the pool which usually only have two lanes available for laps unless classes or school swim teams are meeting then you are out of luck. I don't mind sharing lanes but it can get chaotic especially if you are a slow swimmer. However the hours of operation (5am-9pm) during the weekdays are good. In conclusion this place is good place to workout, just not great. read more

Generally I go to the Siskey YMCA in the Matthews area, but I'm around University for work so I have been visiting this location lately It's certainly not as nice as the Siskey location, but overall it is a solid facility. The employees are nice enough and the place is pretty clean, so no complaints there. I feel as if there isn't enough machinery/space for the amount of people that are using this place though, there is often wait times for certain machines, and it can get pretty cramped during the busy hours Overall I don't mind coming to this Y location, and would recommend it over some of the other gyms in the area (particularly the Planet Fitness on Uni City) read more

This review is about the YMCA as a whole, and even if it was about just this one, it would get fewer stars if I could give it. First off, in my history of gym memberships, I have not ever been afraid of paying high membership fees. I'm from Louisiana, and in Lafayette, LA, I was a member of the nation renowned gym called Red's, where literally wwe superstars and professional athletes alike work out if they happen to be in town for something. The rate at Reds was $55, and in every sense of the word was worth it. It literally had every athletic thing you could ask for. The rate I paid in my year at the Y was $68 dollars a month. Honestly, I mostly played basketball in my time I spent as a member, but the quality of their equipment didn't even lead me to try anything else. If I went to rent a basketball, I had to give up something of personal value, like my car keys, or my driver's license. So, you would think that you were renting something of value. Yet, if they even had a basketball to give you, the ball looked like they literally went around the neighborhood and found balls from under people's houses and brought to the Y for people to rent. I asked about it and they say, well people steal them. Well you have freakin airport security quality things you have to walk through in order to get in the place pay attention. Besides, with all the money you guys are bringing in, there should be a budget for equipment. Keep a certain number and don't spend over a certain amount on equipment, but there's no reason to not have at least some good equipment. Being a member at the Y should be $30 max. Yet, just to go in as a guest for a day is $20. I admit that every other Y is nicer than this one, but the same principals issues remain, even at the nicer ones. That's the only reason why I gave 1 star. read more

This YMCA is wonderful. It has a open floor setup for exercising. It is conveniently located across from a Rite-Aid,Harris Teeter,and a Texas Land & Cattle i think...One of those cowboy type restaurants lol.....and a Credit union,and wells fargo. All in walking distance of the YMCA. The exercise room is larger then most ymca's you will visit unless you go downtown. read more

Compared to the other Y's around this one deserves exactly 1 star. I play basketball a lot at this Y. How is it the same person who has been in multiple fights(not arguments, literal fistfights) is allowed to continue to come back and disrupt the safety of others without being banned. I was banned once for a year for telling another member (in a mean manner) to leave my kid the hell alone. My daughter who was 4 at the time was in the gym w me eating some snacks (she doesn't like the play area because she says it's dirty and smells) and the lady came up and snatched the juice box from her and told her there was no food or drinks in the gym. She wasn't staff, she was a member so I told her off and got banned. The administrator, Paul, is the epitome of a corporate stooge, who will only speak the company line, and has zero ability to hold a conversation other than the passing pleasantries. I like the dowd y and the west cabbarus y, the "keith" ymca is for old folks and jellyfish who like to overpay for ppl to drill rules on them. I'll never go back read more
