This gym has so much potential. It looks so nice on the outside, but inside it's a completely different vibe. It always seems as though the air isn't on or working, the place is always messy/dirty, and the last time I went, I promptly left once I realized they didn't have any of the wipes to wipe down the machines. NONE. I was utterly disgusted. The only saving grace of this location is that they have a ladies only workout room. That's the only thing that stops me from going to the Rock Hill location all of the time. Rock Hill is cleaner, more lively, and seemingly more up-to-date. I just don't understand why this location isn't up to par with how much money they charge for a membership. read more

Once again this location has fallen back into a state of disrepair. When something breaks you can expect it to take months, if not longer, before it's repaired. The latest casualty is the elevator, which may not be a big deal to many people but I'm preparing for hip surgery, so climbing two flights of stairs to get to the main workout area is a challenge. I know there are quite a few others like myself who suffer from hip, knee or back issues, and rely on the elevator to access the upper floors where all the equipment is. I know there's a small workout area in the women's locker room but it's basically a dark, windowless room with very limited equipment. At this point the elevator has been out of service for around 2-3 weeks at least. I mean, how long does it really take to have an elevator repair company come out and fix the problem? It seems that management tries to avoid spending money on repairs for as long as possible or until enough people complain. read more

I've never been to a gym with multiple floors. There are plenty of machines and free weights here. On the day I visited I did chest and triceps, abs, and finished with some cardio. I didn't have any trouble moving about, and everything was operational. I did notice that they were out of wipes at every station... a reoccurring complaint. But, there was an attendant walking around and spraying down stations. Overall great visit. read more

This gym is disgustingly dirty. The machines are dusty, there were several days when the bathroom/locker room had no hand soap, and the bathrooms are never cleaned. I know several people who have left because of this. The staff don't care - this past weekend there was an unleashed pit bull walking around the gym while the owner worked out. read more

AC broke usually, bathrooms nasty, hasn't been hand sanitizer in the dispensers for 6+ months, no hot water unless it comes from a water fountain, maybe 7 members know how to rack their weights. Beware!! LA Fitness is now allowing the British American children taking swim lessons into the men and women's locker room to potty and change! This is a direct violation of their long time rule that no children under the age of 13 are allowed in the locker rooms. This is creepy and uncomfortable for the adults that are undressing! In the past, LA fitness provided them a separate space for this but has decided recently to changed their position on this one rule! LA Fitness no longer values my membership and my privacy!! Speaking with Matthew the area manager was unpleasant due to the lack of full information he provided and his condescending tone and attitude. I take ownership of my own misunderstanding of how to complete the guest pass process however, as he restated several times that he was the manager he failed to provide clarity on the process for such. This gym is dirty and not well kept. The small weights are worn and kind of disgusting. The "movie" room has not been fixed. The TVs on the treadmills didn't work (tried 3). It just felt soiled. Signed up with the expectation as per their website at the time of being able to bring 1 guest per visit. That offer had expired the day before evidently but the website still had it listed. Staff spoken to was ‍ Staff is meh..some are nice, others not. I cancelled within the 3 business days and at least I can say they didn't hassle me. I got a membership at this Gym in march. At first it didn't seem too bad, I tried to ignore the bad reviews and have my own experience. Unfortunately that was my first mistake. The sauna and women's only section was the amenities that sold me. The Sauna hasn't been fixed in over a whole month. The bathrooms are outdated/smelly/dirty. They rarely ever have wipes in the wipe stations. The guys who sell you the membership when you come in for a tour are pretty unprofessional. I brought a guest ONE time and they didn't want to deal with it or help her sign in they were chuckling amongst themselves. Then one of the bigger guys goes up to my guest during her work out to try to sell her a membership by criticizing her "form". For the price you're paying it's definitely not worth it. It could have so much potential if they changed things up and put more money into the actual gym. I have now switched over to Planet Fitness and am much happier there! read more

This facility is the nicest LA Fitness I have ever visited - I have been a 5+ year member in the Florida market for LAF and have never seen such a nice facility -- it is very similar to 24 hour fitness super sport or Gold's Gym in my area. The cardio theater and the walk/run trail up on the 3rd floor are items I have never seen in my usual 10 or so LAF locations I visit. Clean bathrooms with couches and TVs?! Super! The Charlotte market is lucky to have such a nice LAF. There is a lot more cardio machines than strength training. It was nice to see a cross fit area but one power rack and one squat rack is meager. Not sure why newer LAF locations insist on this. Other than that, this location rocks! Will return! read more

Pretty nice facility. Below are some items to help you determine if it's the best place for you. Compared to other locations across the country they have great amenities: pool, racket ball court, indoor track, smoothie station, spin room, women's only area (bonus star for this one!), fitness area, tv room, etc. The trainers don't harass you too much to join their programs. The cleanliness is hit or miss. The tv room is a clear miss. Staff do not go in their regularly to clean. Someone can leave a towel and it will sit on the same machine for several days. Yuck! I always wipe down equipment before and after use for safety measures, but in a place where their is bodily fluids they have to do better. Most staff let you pick the movie for the movie room! Sometimes the equipment won't work properly and staff have been notified yet there is no sign. Some equipment should be updated. The staff are friendly. There is plenty of parking. It's located in a shopping area so you can grab a bite to eat afterwards and just walk there. In addition, it's located right off 485 highway so easy access. Hope this helps! read more

I have driven by this conspicuously impressive, 3-story, glass-sided facility many times over the past few years, but now, thanks to Silver Sneakers (thru Aetna) I am a happy new member. Being in my mid-50s, it has been over 10 years since my last gym membership at the YMCA and I have found few faults with this place. They have something for everyone, even middle aged guys with Parkinsons like me. On floor one, you check in electronically immediately upon entry at the front desk. The men's locker room is to the left and has plenty of showers and lockers, and even has a lounge with comfortable leather seating and a widescreen TV. It is also uncommonly clean. The well-used pool with three swimming lanes is located in the middle of the first floor. There's a woman's only workout area to the right as well as the women's locker room. Stairs or elevator transport you to the second floor, which contains a huge free weight area, and even larger weight machine area, tons of Precor elliptical machines, treadmills, stairmasters and stationary bikes. There's a bustling exercise classroom that seems to be continually full. Personal trainers are available (at an extra cost) and are continually at work, otherwise, employees seem a bit scarce however. There is ample area for stretching and such on the right side along the windows. You also enter the racquetball court near this area. The third floor consists of a three-lane walking track that flows along the perimeter of the glass windows overlooking the workout areas below and the parking lot. There's also a few more Precors located in an alcove and in the area right in front of the elevators upon exit. My favorite area has become the theater with continually running movies, that has even more ellipticals, treadmills and bikes in lieu of seats. It's amazing how the minutes fly by on a Precor while you're watching Planet of the Apes or Batman, like I did my last two visits. The audio leaves a bit to be desired though. By the way, I only noticed a few such Precors out of service throughout the entire facility which is to be expected. Overall, like I said earlier, I really enjoy this place. During the day, when I normally visit, it is primarily bustling with 55+ year old crowd consisting of retirees. With the evening, comes the younger crowd. So it truly has something for everyone. read more

I have been to several LA fitness gyms across the U.S and this has to be the WORST LA I have ever been to. It has an unpleasant odor, AC is often broken, and the men's restroom looks and smells like a barn. The associates there look like they can care less about any members and sometimes you can see them throwing a football around in the lobby because they have nothing to do. Very sad. read more

It's an okay gym but it's hot as hell in here even when it's cold outside I'm sweating so much there is literally no AC or fans and when equipment needs to be repaired, expect to wait months for it to be fixed. They also have way too many cardio machines that are broken that haven't worked the whole time I've worked out here. They also got rid of all paper towels and replaced them with these wet wipes but after you wipe a machine it's soaking wet from the wipe and there is nothing to dry it up with... it's super annoying. Paper towels should be available. On the plus, they have enough machines to do a decent workout, they have a level with a track and cardio fitness room, and a separate women's room. read more

I go almost every day since it is very close to home. I tend to go in the mornings so access to equipment isn't an issue. The price is fair. I paid in cash up front and got a slight discount which is an option if you ask. It is well laid out and checks most of the boxes in terms of what I would need or expect. 2 big misses. 1) The bathrooms and shower area are not consistently cleaned and are generally subpar. Think back to your old high school. It's that. 2) They open at 8:00 am on weekends. 8:00!!! That is outrageously late for a gym. If the manager/owner is reading this - please reconsider. To be fair, these were the hours when I signed up a few months ago. I just thought they'd change as things loosen up. I dont know how this gym is still getting business crunch fitness is destroying them with rates 1/2 the price, brand new equipment vs LA 10+ year old equipment, crunch has 3x if not more the amount of equipment, and on top of that there's only 1 la fitness to go to in this area crunch has like 3 I really don't know how la fitness is justifying these prices it's definitely not worth the money. Not much has changed since my last review ove three years ago. Especially when it comes to paragraphs 5 & 6 below: ""Pretty nice gym with a lot of amenities and options. Has a pool, a walking/running track on the top floor. Plenty of treadmills and machines and good free weight section. Very convenient location for the Ballantyne area and membership fees reasonable for what you are able to take advantage of. It is really like a YMCA only cheaper. It is frequently crowded. At times you may have to wait to get on certain machines that you want to use. Same with the pool. If you want to swim some laps, there are only 3 lanes and count on some wait times if you want a lane to yourself. Or expect to share one if you don't mind that. Eventually you can use what you want to use there, but during peak times if you want to get in and get out, things won't always work in your favor due to the crowds. Some of the downsides are cleanliness and modernization. I first joined when they opened and it was Urban Active. When LAF took it over they didn't make much effort to modernize and replace some of the outdated equipment. Probably because it wasn't considered a cost priority and still isn't. A lot of barks about staff here but IMO much of the clientele are a problem. If you really want to be exposed to a large gathering of inconsiderate people under one roof at the same time you can definitely find it here. For example, there is a tendency by some to hog machines indefinitely while they're texting on their phones or gabbing with their friends without consideration that someone else may want to use the same machine sometime this century. It's a social hour to them. And some of these same schmucks think they're entitled to using more than one machine at a time instead of staying on one thing till they've finished their sets. You'll see a free machine thinking it's just that...then some tool approaches you halfway through out of nowhere claiming he or she still 'got more sets to do here!' Really?? Also plenty of disrespectful jerks in the free weight area. It's typically left a mess until the staff has the time and the room to come in and clean up all the weights from the floor. The staff repeatedly leaves signs on the wall asking members to place unused weights back on the rack but they might as well be posting in Greek, you'd get the same results. So apparently some patronage suffer from poor upbringings as their Mommies and Daddies never instructed them to put things away when they're done with them. I've been to other LAFs where that WAS NOT an issue but for some reason it is here. None of this is the staffs' fault. All in all if LAF Ballantyne is convenient for you it will get the fitness job done despite some of it's pitfalls. Best to avoid the peak times especially after work in the 5-7.30p range for it's a madhouse and when you will most run into the aforementioned issues above." read more

I like going to La fitness because it's the nearest gym from my home. However, they need to update the equipment. All machines are really old and some of them are not functioning properly. Bathrooms, and almost all areas of the gym are always dirty. They don't open at 5 am as it's scheduled. read more

Was visiting Charlotte from Georgia and came here for my Saturday morning workout....OMG this is the nicest LA Fitness I've EVER seen!!! It's huge and has ALL the amenities! Far more than any location I've ever been to and I travel a lot so I've been to my fair share of locations. It was also very new/fresh/modern feeling. It was a huge facility with pool, racquetball, basketball, run/walk track on the 3rd story, 2 machine areas, free weights, cycle room, and group fitness class room. What's especially unique about this location that I have truly never seen at an LAF before is the "Women's Only" workout room and the locker rooms. All LAFs have locker rooms, yes, but these were enormous and very nice & modern. The women's only room was awesome. I'm not comfortable lifting weights in the main free weight area because it's always filled with beefy (or sometimes creepy, let's be honest) men so I never do many free weight exercises at the gym. This women's only area solves everything!!! It had machines, dumbbells, kettle bells, medicine balls, stability balls, and barbells!! Who do I have to talk with to get on of these at my home LA Fitness?? Love it! read more

Not sure what the negative fuss is all about. I've been to LA Fitness locations all across the nation, and this one is bars above most others. It was clean, I saw members putting away their weights, wiping down gear and the locker room was tidy. In regards to the pool? It looked like the standard size pool at any LA Fitness. Btw, LA Fitness as a corporation uses stock photos when advertising, all of them are the same no matter what location it is. If you want to know what amenities they have, call or go up there. The staff was great and inviting, I had some questions and they were more then happy to assist. They have towel service, which is nice and usually only available at premiere clubs (this one is not classified as such) In regards to membership. All LA Fitness clubs are the same, you have to cancel at your home club. Seems pretty simple to me. Read your membership contracts people, the details are in there. When you're signing up, ask questions. This is a multi floor club. Front desk, sales, smoothie bar, locker rooms and pool on the first floor. Weights and classes (can't remember if racquet ball was here) on the second floor. A running track on the third. Most LA Fitness clubs don't have a track, so be thankful you have one. My only grip would be the Sauna was closed on the day I was there, but they had posted around the club. Well done LA Charlotte. Well done! read more

Used to be Urban Active and still looks to be it from the exterior. There are a few things they have updated on the interior with proper signage. Staff is the same, equipment is the same, amenities the same, price the same. Biggest loss is the staff. Goodness gracious! They are the most apathetic bunch I've ever seen behind a counter. Little gripe first- The Facebook site is misleading. There are pics of a basketball court and spin classes when this location does not have either one. BIG GRIPE second- My mom is in the silver sneakers club. She is eligible for free memberships at various gyms across Charlotte. We decided on LA fitness because the location is near our house. On the first day- my mom got her free card as a member and I signed up as a regular paying member. While we were registering- the personal training director was extremely perky and friendly. Niceness seemed to ooze out of every pore of her tiny-framed body. She talked my mom into signing up for a personal training contract (50 bucks a session). She set up auto-pay to remove the several hundred dollars a month. Recently, my mom had an injury and was only able to get a dozen or so sessions with the trainer. She also has rheumatoid arthritis in conjunction with this injury. Simply walking is unbearable for my mom. Mom went to see an orthopedic doctor promptly. He immediately ordered her to stop exercising and recommended double knee replacement surgery. My mom went to LA fitness the DAY OF her doctor's appointment and handed a doctor's note to the personal training director. (The letter included her diagnosis and order to stop exercising). She asked the personal training director to freeze her contract. (The director said she could freeze at any time when we first met her). Now, the friendly personality of the director dropped. Her original promise was broken. The director said she would have to see what corporate says and left my mom wondering if she would be able to have her account frozen at all. This baffled my mom as she was told this to be LA Fitness policy. Why would there have to be a decision when this was a guarantee? Red flags popped off everywhere and my mom's heart sank. The show the director puts on to get new people to sign up and pay hefty for training is all an act. She is fake. When my mom needed help and was devastated about her knees- this lady became cold and shut-down. It did not get any better for quite some time. My mom went around and around with the director about the status of freezing her personal training contract. The director strung my mom along for weeks with no response to update inquiries or vague responses via text at best. LA fitness continued to withdraw money out of her bank account long after turning in the doctor's notes. My mom continued asking for an update again and again to no satisfaction. Today, my mom got a text from her that said, "I've done all that I can do." No other information was included. This upset my mom as it would anyone. Mom got the corporate number and had her issue resolved after calling. Due to this hassle and frustrating experience from the local director she decided to no longer freeze her account, but rather cancel all together. She doesn't plan on returning to LA fitness after her recovery. She does not ever want to deal with the local management again The corporate office confirmed that the personal training director did not do her job properly. Mom lodged a formal complaint against her today and has not received an apology. I find this really sad and disappointing. We believed this woman was genuinely kind and caring. We did not expect her to lack all consideration for clients and be completely apathetic. She is the ultimate sleazy used car-salesman. I am still a member of LA fitness for now but will be canceling my membership soon. Let's hope my cancellation will go better. read more

It has been almost 2 years now, it's time to update my review. LA Fitness used to be one or the best fitness center in Ballantyne. Now, really: what's going on with the maintenance? they really need ASAP to spend time on cleaning and maintenance. I usually go 3-5 times in a week. I've never seen again a person cleaning. The pool is disgusting!!!!! Mold in the walls and people please, spend money in chlorine! Machines and restrooms that are broken. Only saving grace are the classes. (When they do not canceled them, without any notice). The employees (lobby) have a problem with their attitude. They are chatting with their cellphones. If you don't like this job, just quit! I know they were offering $8 per hour to maintenance and cleaning crew members. Maybe that's the reason they do not have staff? And the place is a shithole? Movies are from the 80's!
