This rating is for THIS Brake Check, and not necessarily any others. About 8 years ago I was doing plenty of driving for work, especially in the Texas countryside, on a lot of farm roads. My alignment kept drifting out of whack. So rather than pay a hundred every time, I went for the lifetime alignment at Brake Check, figuring there are stores across the state, it's locally owned, good deal. Since then I've had a few alignments done, so that's paid for itself. I also decided, due to the usually decent service, to get lifetime brakes as well a couple years ago. Still holding well. So today when I needed some front end work done before my next alignment, I called my normal BC here in town, first time since the new brakes. And I guess there's new guys in there now, because the guy hemmed and hawed on various things and said they'd call back in an hour. 90 minutes later I called and was told the guy was "out for an hour". Lovely. So I looked on this site and found the BC with the most positive ratings, or rather, least bad ratings. Which is not always fair; usually it's pissed-off folks who are more likely to write out their frustrations. But a quick web check shows plenty of angry customers across the state, who usually went in for something simple and were then sold lots of stuff they didn't really need (caliper jobs, etc). Well, that may be true, but my experience at this BC was truly excellent. Roland was so much more helpful on the phone than the other locations I talked to today, and when I got there his fellow manager Dave was just as helpful. It felt like real old school Texas customer service, not a sales job. That's getting ever rarer in town these days. To highlight the point, I got out of there with all the work done, and some other stuff that I saw I needed once it was on the hoist...and the total for everything was less than just the quote for the front end work alone at one of this city's more trusted small mechanic's shops. And the work was solid, done quickly, and with zero hassle or upsell. So, to BC owner John Peveto, who spends so much money on TV ads: Dave and Roland and their attitude and efficiency and honesty are what will save your biz in the long run, not ads for outlets that treat customers like suckers with dollar signs on their foreheads. I was ready to write yet another crappy BC review here until I had the pleasure of dealing with these two guys, and their staff, who seemed to respect their bosses and want to do good fast work for them. It's amazing what being a decent person will accomplish. And that's the attitude that brings repeat customers, rather than losing them. read more

Decent prices, decent people, decent work. What more can you ask for from a car repair place? Mike, the only person with whom I had any dealings, was to the point, effective and reasonably nice. He said two and a half hours, and my car was done in 2 hours, 28 minutes, by my calculations, and I didn't have anything to complain about. I got out of there for slightly less than I'd been expecting (note: book your appointment online at www.brakecheck.com three days in advance and get 20 percent off your services). If you've got a coupon, you're probably better off getting your oil change elsewhere (this one was $30, and junk-mail ads usually have them for $20 or so) but that'd be my only complaint. It was still easier to get two things done at once by decent people, from my perspective, than to deal with unpleasant service at Groovy Lube or Jiffy Lube. read more

I like the Brake Check, because even though I am a girl and I have only the bare minimum of knowledge regarding the workings of the internal combustion engine, these folks treat me with respect. They give you a recommendation which you can either take or not. They won't treat you like an idiot if you decide not to take their recommendation - which is nice. About a month ago my boyfriend realized that the brake were going out on his '67 Camaro. So we headed over to this Brake Check location even though it happened to be the same day we were moving from South Austin, to North Austin. They were nice and by the end of the day had done a complete brake job on the car. We were happy that they had managed to get everything taken care of while we moved house and ran other errands. So we headed back up Mopac to our new place thinking every thing was great, boy were we wrong..... Halfway home, the brakes started going out again. By the time we made it to McNeil, they were completely out. Imagine our dissapointment. So seeing as how we now lived in North Austin, we decided to just take it over to the Brake Check on 183 the next morning. This was a bad idea. He FIXED the problem by going out of his way to purchase a manual for the '67 Camaro, reading it inside and out and then getting the brake job done RIGHT. He also kept us updated about the problem and how it was going to be fixed and he even DROVE the Camaro back to our house in North Austin because due to my Boyfriends wacky work schedule [he's a paramedic] we had no way to get the car for the next 3 days. They told me I needed new brake pads and my rotors resurfaced, quoted me a price, I agreed to the estimate and they started the work. Two hours later, they finished up, got my car parked out front. Then they tell me that the front rotors are too thin, below the discard limit, and I need new rotors, which would be another $150 and even more waiting time. Now, the only way the rotors can be under the discard limit is if they were under the machine tool limit before they resurfaced. So they gave me a bad diagnosis, did the work based on a bad diagnosis, and now I have rotors that are a safety hazard, even though I paid to get them resurfaced. I declined the new rotors. I was eager to pay with my card, because the card reader is supposed to ask if you were satisfied with the service, and gives the option of having a district manager contact you. But Service Advisor Phillip could tell I was upset, and before I realized what was happening, he entered my card payment manually through his computer, bypassing the satisfaction survey. I'm never going to Brake Check again. I think I'll just fix my own brakes from now on. read more

3/3: My car needed a jump start so I drove straight to AutoZone to have the battery checked; they said it was "like new", but the alternator was bad. They referred me to Brake Check #405 for the alternator replacement. Brake Check does an hour long diagnosis and tells me my battery is good, but the alternator needs replacing. Brake Check charges a 190% mark up for the alternator part (compared to the price listed on AutoZone's website), plus labor, and they put in a remanufactured one provided by AutoZone without telling me. 4/1: My car's power steering suddenly fails while I'm in morning rush hour traffic. I drive it in a straight line to Long Horn Automotive. I tell the mechanic I just had my alternator replaced as he pulls out the power steering belt that is not anchored because the bolt fell off as it was not properly tightened when Brake Check replaced the alternator (the bolt is lying inside the frame). The mechanics tells me this is a highly dangerous as they shake their heads. [Brake Check did credit me for the $60 labor charge to put the bolt back on]. 4/7: My car died (it coasted as I stepped on the gas pedal) while I was in morning rush hour traffic about a month later when the refabbed alternator failed. I took it back to Brake Check and they told me my issue was probably "electrical" but that since it was under AutoZone's warranty they would order an upgraded one and install it for free (Duralast Gold #DLG11051). 4/9: Brake Check installs the second alternator, ensuring me this one is brand new. 5/5: My battery light has been flickering on and off for two days. I take it to Lone Star Auto, they check and tell my my alternator is bad. I call Brake Check and they insist it is an "electrical" issue and that they don't do electrical and I need to have it checked by "electrical experts". Lone Star calls Will Bakel (the Manager at Auto Zone) to come over and take a look (since the alternator and battery are Auto Zone parts, and the two shops are next door to each other). Will says the battery is spewing acid and is corroded and in awful shape and that it is over 7 years old (according to Russell at Brake Check), but in reality it was replaced by AutoZone in Sept. 2012 under warranty. And the tech at Auto Zone told me it was perfectly fine just the previous month (on 3/3). Lone Star replaces the battery, but says the alternator is still an issue. 5/6: I take my car to Infiniti to have them check for electrical issues. They do a diagnosis ($144) and come back in ten minutes to tell me the alternator is running at 14.8 - 15.2 volts and this caused the weakened battery to die (and spew acid). They said they get many referrals from AutoZone telling customers their alternator needs to be replaced, but that in 90% of cases it is just the battery that needs replacing, and that I probably only needed a new battery in the first place. 5/9: Back I go to Brake Check for the third alternator under AutoZone's warranty. This time I insist to see their paperwork that it is an OE alternator and NOT a Duralast but an Infiniti recommended brand (they installed a Remy #12569). They also replace the alternator belt for me at parts cost, but unfortunately they don't tighten it enough and 2 days later it is squealing like a pig. So I have to go back, once again, for them to fix it. A two month long saga, three alternators and one new battery later, $760 spent, and AutoZone in partnership with Brake Check was finally able to get my car back to driving safely. Russell Weeks, the manager at Brake Check, made some efforts to work with me and I believe he wasn't purposefully lying to me. But I also believe my alternator never needed replacing in the first place..... read more

I only have good things to say about this Brake Check. I only go here strictly for brake replacements, though, and I have NEVER had one problem and have taken several cars to this particular location. I frequently see either David, Terry, or Steve. All very nice, all very quick. I have been to the competition and this has worked out the best for me. I was referred here by a friend of mine who works for Firestone, even. There are Brake Checks all over by where I live, but I always end up going to this one on purpose. When you go online and make your appointment, the further out you do it, the higher percentage off you get, which is pretty cool. Had my brakes done here about 9 months ago. I should have known to run when they called me and told me my truck needs synthetic oil per the manufacturer. I told them no it doesn't but they told me I was wrong. Anyways paid more than I probably should have for my brake job and my brakes stopped vibrating. Then 4-5 months later it returned. 9 months later it's worse than before. Moral of the story. Don't use brake check unless you have to. read more

Up front: I'm catching up on old experiences on yelp. This happened about 6 years ago at this location, so take it with a grain of salt per their current management and employees. Normally I would _never_ go back that much in time with an opinion, but this is different. I took a Tahoe 4x4 in for a brake rebuild and complete brake job. At the same time I was also getting some adjustments done to the front suspension as it was making this weird thump when we turned. After spending in the neighborhood of 5-600 dollars, they said they were able to replace/fix the brakes but were having problems with the suspension. I was minorly disappointed, but they suggested that I go to the dealership to have the front issues dealt with. Ok, fine. Some issues are tough to find. Working on cars a bit myself, I can attest that sometimes it just takes a 2nd opinion. I took the car to Capital Chevy for the repairs on the front suspension about 30-50 miles after going to Brake Check. (Read: the next day) While on the lift, I was talking ot the mechanic there who was diagnosing the problem. At the time I suggested that Brake Check was having issues with this and that I just had the brakes done. At this point the mechanic at Capital Chevy said that it looked like they hadnt done anything to the brakes. The rotors in the front werent turned nor the back brakes (drums if I remember correctly). With it up on the lift, we both confirmed this with the wheels off. As any person would, I completely lost my sh**. After getting the other work on the Chevy fixed I took it directly to Brake Check. They tried to tell me that it wasnt there problem at first, until I presented the statement from the dealership and the fact that I had driven less than 100 miles on the car. I filed a complaint with their main office (which they never replied to) and I demanded they fix the brakes that I had always paid for. Because the front rotors could no longer be turned again, they ended up buying me 1 new rotor and turning the 2nd one. They were pretty cool about all of this, but at this point - once you're caught with this sort of deal, it's a little late. Needless to say, Ive shared this story with numerous people and continue to til this day. I would _NEVER!!!!_ shop at this store. Im sure that the service guy who performed the "service" on my car is long gone, but I'm still exceedingly burned by this experience. If there was a "0 star" rating, I would give it to this location. Honestly, in my 35 years of life, I don't think Ive had a business blatantly try to cheat me like that. I'm just glad I had their work checked at the dealership. I've been to this location for two or three oil changes now. They're open weekends, the staff is always friendly and informative, and they've never pushed any unnecessary work on me. This last visit was a little slow, but I waited it out at the kolache place next door, so it actually made for a pleasant wait. Just leave yourself some time and you won't be disappointed. I can't imagine that I'd ever rate a car repair place 5 stars, but as the rating suggests, Brake Check (S. Lamar) is as good as it gets! I began my brake journey by speaking to Marshall, the manager I believe, via phone. I was quite frank in telling him the amount of money I had to spend, my previous car history, I'm a bad car mom, etc - I needed a whole brake job. He was so nice and friendly. What's better is that he didn't make me feel like an idiot girl for not caring for my car like a fanatic. And he didn't make me feel like I would die on the road if I didn't get ALL the repairs he recommended. He was knowledgeable and courteous, frank but friendly. In the end, I walked out of there for $100 less than other places. This $100 does NOT include the discount you can get by booking online! I had to get mine done same day. Since I couldn't afford everything that was recommended (and I know the repairs are needed b/c he wasn't the first to tell me) he gave me some options to come back in three months and get the rest of the services for discount pricing. I felt so relieved to find a place that helped me stay in my budget, no high pressure tactics, and had my car done fast. I also overheard a girl in the waiting room tell her grandfather that she needed a new serpetine belt (been there, done that). The place she took it to that morning wanted $500! Brake Check fixed it for $60. But that's just the conversation I was eavesdropping on. I feel better knowing I have a place to go. Not to mention their lifetime warranties! I went there for a wheel alignment. I was told it was fixed after 4 hours, but when I drove the car was still leaning to the right. I went back to the shop to tell that it didn't work next day. They told me that I should go to the other shop by Stassney, S I-35, since they have a "State of the art" equipment. So I went to the South Austin shop and spent another 4 hours. They re-aligned it, gave me a document showing what they did. The mechanic was whining about how difficult it is to fix cars brought from the north, because of the rust. They tested it as well. Initially I couldn't feel it, but in a couple of days, the car not only couldn't drive straight, but it was also leaning to the right even more than it did before. Basically, I spent the whole weekend trying to get it fixed and nothing worked. Since I didn't have any other time to take it there, I gave up and next time I will go somewhere else. I went back. Didn't need my car all day, so I knew I wouldn't be in the waiting room. No shuttle service--even just to 16th and Guadalupe. Would have liked some sort of something instead--computer to look up bus schedule (or hard copy schedules), an offer to call me a cab or at least business cards for cabs, maybe an arranged discount on cab service for their customers! That would have made me feel like they REALLY cared! I had quite a bit of overdue work done this time. $400 again. Must be my magic number here. Paul was pretty nice and got the work done even with having trouble reaching me since I was in an all-day orientation. Mentioned the one thing that they noticed and weren't able to reach me for pre-authorization can still be fixed under my lifetime warranty plus $30 for labor. On another note, on my last visit I had them check my A/C and they just gave me a recharge. I am now taking my car in to another place to replace a bad A/C hose that they didn't notice back then. Maybe not the most observant of shops--maybe too busy, as they are too busy to give me a ride 20 blocks. Having to walk from bus stops in 100 degree heat wearing heels keeps this location at a mere 2 stars for me and I'm feeling generous because they were otherwise friendly getting me in and out. read more

So I didn't get any brakes put on here, but I'd like to comment on the customer service. The other day my car's pads felt like they were slipping or gone. You know that feeling of metal on metal when you pad finally gives it? Well, I was sure something was wrong so I pulled on up into this place. Guys joked around with me a bit and got the car up ASAP. I was on lunch and trying to get back to work and they knew that and worked fast. After a thorough visual inspection they told me everything was fine, plenty of life on my pads and showed me up close their condition. They mentioned some basic maintenance I could do, but didn't pressure me into buying it. I was in a hurry to get back to work and they put the wheels on fast, took it for a spin around the block to double-check things and I was on my way. They didn't charge me a dime. I can't tell you guys how refreshing that is. There's a reason I do most of my own car maintenance and it's b/c I HATE being sold crap my car doesn't need, b/c a place thinks I know nothing about how my car works and/or its maintenance schedule. I brought my car back into the shop because the light finally came back on. After a couple more glitches that the mechanics worked very hard to correct, I'm pleased to say that I'll be happy to continue using this Brake Check as my main auto repair store. Steve, the district manager, came to the store while I was there to personally meet me and help with the diagnostics of my troublesome repair. The team they have working now, Andy, Marshall, Ed...they are the best and I feel so comfortable with them and feel as though I am a valued and important customer. They greet me by name when I come in and know enough about me to chit chat a little. That kind of attention goes far with me. I'm happy to say that my car is repaired. They fixed the problems and I just went in today for them to check over the work and change out my serpentine belt. It happened within a reasonable amount of time and for a very reasonable price. This place is phenomenal!!! I don't normally say that about repair shops because they are always trying to rip someone off. However, after visiting this place, I'm never going anywhere else. Number 1:Pulling in to this place, my car sounded like I was dragging Robo-Cops dead body underneath my car. They were honestly my last hope and I figured I would spending $500 if not more due to my extreme procrastination resulting in metal on metal braking. Number 2: the guy who answered the phone was extremely knowledgable about my service questions. He pretty much knew what I needed before he even looked at my car. Number 3: they closed at 6pm and they still took me at 5:45pm without question. Number 4: the guys working are so freaking nice it threw me for a loop. Made a same-day appointment here to get the brakes checked out. The mechanics explained a lot about what would and wouldn't need to be replaced (yet). They also kind of gave TMI about personal/business issues. They stayed a little late to finish the brake job. But when the car was home, we realized the brake lights were permanently on, while the car was not running. We called at 8:15pm and technician came out within an hour.... but with no tools. They did fix it. I don't know. The brakes do still work so that's what's important, right? read more

Had a great experience here this morning, courtesy of the upended orange cone the city of Austin so kindly left on my driveway for me to back over. After yanking the damn thing out from under my car, I realized the muffler had been screwed with. Took it to the kind folks at Jiffy Lube who looked at it quizzically, scratched their heads, and said "sorry, can't find anything wrong with it. Try the guys at Brake Check." So I did. Brake Check had me in and out in under 20 minutes. Turns out something had come out of alignment, and they popped it back in, tightened a gasket, and had me on my way. I was charged a mere $15 for the analysis and service, and was treated with smiles and respect the whole time. A modest service, to be sure, but I left happy. read more

I went to get my radiator fixed (and it seems not many people realize that Brake Check is a full service garage, well, the name is a little unfortunate in that regard). I like that the technicians go over the parts and labor in detail, make recommendations without pushing the upsale and take their time to explain what's being done and why. Their prices usually are below what other places charge and so far everything they've done has been very good. I had my brakes fixed, then my battery had to be changed, finally my radiator needed to be replaced. I would recommend this place to anybody. read more

Well, this a story of a save by management, but I am jumping ahead a bit. I got there, and some idiot said I'd be ready to go, for a basic brake job, in about two hours. Seems it could be faster, considering there weren't many cars in there (there were open bays), and we're talking disc brakes and not on the drive axle, but what the heck. They should know, right? Well, when I came back in two hours to see this fool and one of his co-workers watching "Cars" (yes, they were watching a cartoon) in the waiting area, and my car in the same exact state up on the lift as it was when I left. I was, to say the least, really freakin pissed. "We were waiting for parts". Yeah, ok. Sure. They said they didn't have the right brake pads. At a Brake Shop... OK, w/e. It's like Double Dave's running out of Pepperoni or something. But, let's say it could happen. Why didn't they call me? Why did I leave my phone number then? For a good time call? But, it actually got worse from there. About two hours later, after repeated check-ins by me, I see the Manager working frantically on my car, trying to fix something. Uh-oh, I think. This can't be good. So, eventually, he shows me the problem. A rusted caliper pin. Ugh. This is preventing any movement in the bottom of the pad, which, of course, ain't so good. He's tried to get some penetrating oil to get that sucker moving, but no go so far. It's going to be a bit longer while he sees what he can do. He'll try and get a part in here for it. And to think I only brought it in here to save a little time and labor because I had an important trip to attend. Well, a few hours later, and still, no dice. Seems the part they need is not available right away. It's (now) Friday afternoon/early evening and all. GRRRRRR.... Why on earth did I give this review a three star rating? Well, in short, the Manager. He went out of his way to explain everything for me, took over on the vehicle himself to try and get it done, and was extremely professional while he apologized for my troubles and adjusted my bill appropriately, even while under fire from my some of my frustrated comments. In short, anyone can be nice when everything goes right. It's when things are tough and don't go right at all that you really learn about someone. I learned that the manager at this location is a pro, and deserves my business for now. He was able to make a really bad situation workable, and my car driveable. I'd say that's worth three stars in my book. I've been treated like crap in this situation by other folks before. Ya know, the take it or leave it approach you get at many other businesses around town. But, I'll leave that for another day. I drove the car to Dallas and back the very next weekend, and all went well. No problems. I'm taking it back for them to replace that caliper pin next week. Overall, it'll get fully fixed, at a good price. Just took (quite) a bit longer than expected. The real problem is they need to fire the first person who answered the phone and whom I saw when I arrived. Seriously. Today. I mean, he left at noon on that Friday and could not have cared less. I was there twice as long as he was that day!! Why do places even hire folks like that!? Why would you jeopardize the perceived quality of your business on a loser like that? I wouldn't need my brakes if I saw him walk in front of my vehicle, I tell ya. I'm not sure this guy would know where the Oil Plug was. Maybe he can recommend a good kid's movie though. But, if you speak to the Manager (I wholly recommend you do so), things should be worked on in an honest, able manner with which you should feel safe and happy. Is it his fault a hapless employee works at his establishment? Perhaps. But, let's hope that gets remedied soon. Came in because our brakes were grinding on our 09 Ford, and we were treated to cheesecake just for walking in the door! We hit it off almost instantly with Benjamin, who proceeded to show us all 4 of the brake rotors, pointing out and explaining things along the way. The bill is gonna hurt for a while to come but that is the only sour point about this joint. He even explained how the parts of the bill came together and what each came with; we chose the 20k warranty over the lifetime, and we'll see how that works for us, but money is tight for us and they were able to squeeze us in almost right away. I accidentally made an appointment at this location instead of my usual location on 290. I didn't realize it until I was almost at the 290 location. I called the N Lamar location right away and spoke with Christopher and told him the mistake that I made. He said he already took care of it!! He looked at my account and figured I meant to call the 290 location so he called them, set up the appointment and told them what I was coming in for. I was so impressed by this amazing service. This place is amazing. Wes and his team are not only knowledgeable about cars (a necessity, obviously), but also incredibly accommodating and genuinely eager to help. They fixed my car in five hours (when it probably would've been up to a week at other places) with no difference in price, and have since been super helpful about other questions/issues with my car. My boyfriends brakes were having issues and this was the closest place near by. When he brought the car in and explained the problem the guys there told him it would only be about $250. He thought that sounded reasonable and dropped the car off. 20 minutes later they call him saying it's going to cost $750. We were baffled by the price difference so asked what it was for. They go on to explain that all these other things needed repaired. We said no just fix what we told you to fix. In the end he paid $200 in new parts and $400 in "labor charges" for a 45 minute repair... it was the end of the day and they knew he didn't have any other options so like a classic mechanic, they took advantage of him. Do not recommend. Find another brake shop if you can. read more

Extremely disappointed. I went in a few weeks ago for brake issues. They took care of it and I didn't think much of it. Before I left, one of the managers told me to come back in for Struts and Caliper repairs. He showed me on his computer screen how much it would come out to. I know for a fact that I saw a cost of $120.00. I asked him to confirm this and he said it would indeed cost $120.00 I went back this past week to get this issue taken care of. The worker at the desk told me it would cost $1,400.00. Obviously, I bring up how much the manager said it would cost. The desk worker proceeded to be rude, saying there was a "communication issue" on my part, etc. He tells me that just getting the calipers fixed would cost $140.00 About 20 minutes later, a mechanic comes in and tells me he needs to do "extra work" to fix the calipers, and ended up costing me over $300.00. Now, my brakes are EVEN worse. I asked around and have been told they charge you what THEY think YOU can pay. Avoid this place as you will be overcharged and disrespected. read more
