Brampton 1860 is one of those rare places that actually delivers on the promise of escape. From the moment we arrived, the world outside faded away. We stayed in Marley's Cottage and it was incredible. The red door entrance from our parking space felt like stepping into a secret hideaway. Inside we had a fireplace, a tub on the screened back patio, and a porch swing where we enjoyed our morning coffee. It was private, quiet, and felt like our own little world. Breakfast in the Manor House was outstanding with fresh eggs from their own chickens, and the daily afternoon tea became one of our favorite parts of the day. We met other guests, enjoyed fresh pastries, and had great conversations with the owners, Dave and Hilari. They are warm, welcoming, and clearly passionate about both hospitality and preserving the history of this place. Talking with them about Brampton's story and their vision was a highlight of our stay. Definitely try their Steampot dinner! It's loaded with fresh local seafood and felt like a true taste of the Eastern Shore. The property itself is beautiful to walk with gardens, meadows, and wildlife everywhere. Evenings by the fire pit were relaxing and made even better by Squeaky, the inn's charismatic cat. Brampton 1860 is the perfect spot for a romantic getaway or just time to slow down and recharge. This place has a lot to offer, especially if staying in a cottage. We chose Marley's & were not disappointed- reserved parking space in covered barn leads to private entrance with covered porch swing & seating area perfect for breakfast. Round corner past hammock to outdoor shower w/ footpath to screened-in porch housing Japanese soaking tub. We enjoyed strolls on property with chickens, a friendly cat, & a mini forest of bamboo. Main house has wrap around porch perfect for afternoon tea & socializing, but it was difficult to leave our little oasis with King bed, above mounted TV, peek-thru to bathroom with steam shower & jetted tub. Wood burning fireplace, wet bar, & seating area. Windows and ceiling fans abound for comfort. Breakfast delivered to door for which we were demanding gremlins always asking for more. Non-intrusive staff drops & retrieves. In-room massage was among best I've had. Not a ton to do in area, but nice walkable downtown with specialty shops. We visited during Sultana Downrigging Festival & were plenty entertained. 30 min drive to Chesapeake City will get you waterfront dining & New Orleans inspired steak house. read more

My wife and I just returned from three nights at the Brampton Inn. We literally have lost count of the number of times we have visited (including our wedding!). Somehow, it just keeps getting better. The rooms and public areas are beautiful, stylish, comfortable, and pristine. We especially loved the wood-burning fireplace in our room, jacuzzi tub, light-filled kitchen, and cozy den. The food is just insanely good. The breakfasts are unforgettable. I love sweets, so, on this last visit, I had waffles with bourbon butter the first day, French toast the second, and blueberry pancakes this morning. All-day cookies are available too. The evening "tea" time is great; there's always a savory snack (like deviled eggs or cheese and crackers) and a sweet snack (the lemon bars and hummingbird cake are so good). My wife and I always get their chili dinner delivered to our rooms too. With all that said, what sets the Brampton Inn apart from other luxury hotels and inns we've stayed in is the friendly, professional, cozy, and hospitable atmosphere. And that's all thanks to the people. Dave and Hilari (the owners) are constantly around and love to chat (and, I'm sure, keeping an eye on things to make sure that the quality of every visit stays so high). And the staff is SO great. I literally could list every staff member. Susan especially stood out as going above-and-beyond this trip... but I almost feel bad just listing her because everyone else was great too. We already booked our next visit this summer. Can't wait for the opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of dc to relax at our eastern shore getaway. (See photos) Stay here and experience what we did: Bugs, dust, mildew, peeling ceilings, unsafe fixtures, leaking shower, humid room temperature restricted thermostat, asthma attack one, asthma attack two, inn keep yelling at 6 month pregnant wife, uncomfortable, hostile, left with 3 days left on stay, owner refused to talk to us, made several requests & ignored. We left after interaction with inn keeper, it was so hostile we no longer felt safe staying. Still no response from owner. Stay dates: July 24- July 28, left July 25 at 2:30pm. My husband booked this adorable bed and breakfast for my early birthday weekend and it was wonderful. The house is gorgeous and the staff makes you feel very welcome and comfortable. We stayed in a room with a fireplace and it wasn't quite cold enough to use it but we will need to go back so we can take advantage! The breakfast and afternoon tea were amazing. The chef/baker who works there is nothing short of amazing. Everything we ate was delicious, and the breakfast each morning was different and you had many choices on what to eat. The coffee was also great, my husband and I like a bold roast and we normally cannot find that at a bed and breakfast or hotel. Chestertown is quaint and adorable and a great place to walk around and see the historic buildings and cute shops. St. Michael's MD is only another hour away and worth the trip. I was searching for a close by weekend getaway for me and my husband to celebrate our anniversary and Brampton came up as one of the most highly rated places. Overall, we are very happy with our stay. We rented the Sunrise in the cottage room, which is in a building right behind the main house that has 2 separate, private rooms in it (the sunrise and the sunset) our room has a king bed, wood burning fire place, a bathroom with a large jetted tub and separate shower and a smart tv hooked up to the Wi-Fi for steaming. We stayed in our room most of the weekend aside from going out to eat. It snowed a few inches on Friday night so there wasn't much to do and it was so cold we didn't want to leave the room, we had no plans to do anything in particular anyway, and the grounds were quite beautiful covered in snow. The breakfast is delivered to the cottages every morning and it was very good. The only negative thing I could say is that the room was a little cold. We had the fire burning but it didn't really seam to do much to heat the room and there is a heater on the wall that we turned up as much as we could. The bed was comfy and there was an extra fuzzy blanket in the closet that really helped keep us warm. Overall we had a nice time. read more

The Assistant Inn Keeper was incredibly rude over the phone when I tried to extend my stay. This was right before the Christmas holiday. The Inn had many rooms available as I'd been told at the time of booking and could see when I was there. I didn't see another soul while staying there. After staying for one night, I inquired about extending my stay through Christmas Eve. I was then charged double for a single night extension with no explanation or quote sent. When I followed up about the ridiculous single night rate (nearly $400 that had already been charged to my card) for a standard room, I was met with zero hospitality. I had spent the same amount for two nights in the same room when booking, so I was understandably confused. The room rate increase was never posted online or mentioned to me before booking, only after I was charged and then called to inquire. When I phoned to ask about the rate, I was met with a clearly annoyed and rude woman over the phone again. She couldn't be bothered to own any part of the poor communication on the part of her staff or herself. When I'd originally booked, I'd asked about extending and was told there were plenty of rooms available - nothing about doubling the price of the room rate. Obviously, this came as a shock. But what was more shocking was the impolite manner of the staff member (Meranda) meant to be helping me. I realize we were heading into the holidays and perhaps the rate structure would change, but this was not explained when I booked or asked about extending. Instead, I got hostility and flat rudeness from the Assistant Inn Keeper. Merry Christmas. How hard is it to say please, thank you, or offer I'm sorry when misleading a guest?! The staff here (at least reception) ruined what would have been a perfectly okay stay despite the door to my room being broken (it would not lock from the outside). Don't leave anything valuable in the rooms here- the doors don't shut or lock properly. There is no lock on the main door. Be sure to get everything in writing before you book here. And I guess don't expect basic politeness from the staff. read more

The Brampton B&B is family-owned and -run by the Hanscoms. There are suites in the main 1860 manor house or individual cottages in which you can you reserve. The hubs and I stayed at the Mulberry Cottage, which was located at the edge of the woods. When you pull-up, there is a private covered parking space in which you can park your car. Through the door leads to the front yard, where there's a hammock to the left and a semi-enclosed high fence all around for privacy. The front porch of the cottage has a porch swing, a patio table for two, as well as a neat pile of logs for the fireplace. When you step inside, there is a mini wet bar to the right, a window bay seat with cushions, a large fireplace, a sitting area with armchairs, a dining table, a King-sized bed with a mounted TV, a spa tub, a steam shower, and mini screened in 'outdoor sanctuary' with a Japanese-style soaking tub with another set of patio table and chairs. The rooms were pretty clean, comfortable, and cozy, and you have access to the thermostat. I absolutely LOVED the soaking tub outside, the jet spa tub, and the luscious-smelling bath products that were available. Just note that the wi-fi isn't really strong, the TV only has the basic channels, the rooms are not brightly-lit (all generally soft lights), there are many switches for the lights/fans, and the porch area's screens only cover a small portion (but, the cottage is secluded enough where you do not have to worry about any onlookers); you're here to relax, after all! You can also add packages and add-ons to your stay - the hubs had ordered a homemade celebration cake (there's carrot, vanilla, or chocolate - we had carrot), and generously-sized semi-sweet brownies with a tub of Haagen-Dazs. An a-la-carte breakfast is included, and you can either have it delivered to the cottage you're staying at or dine at the manor. We had blueberry banana muffins (so moist and delicious!), orange and cranberry juices, a spinach and goat cheese frittata, beluberry ebelskivers, some shredded hash browns, eggs our way, and yummy thick sausage patties. The inn also offers an Afternoon Tea, in which a large selection of Harney & Sons teas, coffee, cookies, spiced nuts, and both savory/sweet treats are available (the cookies and sweets are available all the time). My most favorite part was the inn's very sweet outdoor cat, Squeaky, who would accompany us on walks, both to and from the manor, became a daily greeter (he would show up on our front porch to say 'Hello'), and a great partner on the porch swing (he sat next to me, getting some cuddles)! My husband and I recently spent 3 nights at the Brampton Inn to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We stayed in the Mulberry cottage which is a free-standing building away from the bed and breakfast. It included our own private porch, outdoor Japanese soaking tub, indoor spa/sauna shower and whirlpool bath, wood-burning fireplace, kitchenette, and daily delivered breakfast. The price was the first selling point as it was lower in comparison to other inns in its category. The 5 star inn has a 5 star customer rating and is on the historic registry. The choice of rooms sold us as well, as the cottage was exactly what we were looking for. The place was clean and comfortable and homey, and the Brampton family were very friendly and accommodating. Treated my husband to a birthday away from home. We couldnt have made a better choice for R&R,(rest and relaxation), than this. My choice was the 2 night Shhhhh... couples retreat. To sum it up everything had a stamp of classic homestyle and special touch only B and B's provide. Like we say in the military, "it's all in the details". We felt cared for. All the bells and whistles and we didnt have to lift a finger, food was brought to our cottage and we had a wine paring meal featured at The Kitchen, a local restaurant that was 6 stars, (part of our package, gratuities added as well). Yes! I gave it an extra star because the chef talked about each pairing and dish as it was served. Guess what was for desert? Chocolate chocolate bread cake , red velvet cake paired with peanut butter wiskey, OMG! It was mind blowing. We were absolutely delighted and it was some of the most mouth watering food I've ever tasted. Ok, so back to the cottage. Picture this: Fireplace, Jacuzzi, roses and chocolate strawberries and sparkling cider waiting for you while you enter your beautiful country cottage with all nature could offer. Picturesque gardens, old barns, natural walking paths, flowers , trees, wildlife and best of all QUIET TIME . Thank you for the most pleasant stay this weekend. I cant stop thinking of Brampton. My husband felt so well rested and special that I know this will be a special memory he and I can share over and over again. Our cottage was in the center of everything. I absolutely loved Brampton! I stayed in the Sunset Cottage - it was quaint and Comfortable and clean and quiet - the jetted tub was so nice, and I appreciated the black washcloth for makeup! (the heated towel bar is a great touch, but not needed in July :) The grounds of the Inn are gorgeous - including the gardens and walking trails. My favorite part was the staff, who were just all lovely, and the "back porch" of the Inn - the tables and chairs, and rocking chairs and fire pit were just the best place to have breakfast, afternoon tea, or to just sit and read. The food was amazing- breakfast had very fresh fruit and a pastry (blueberry donut was my favorite) daily, and then a choice of an egg dish or pancakes/waffles. Egg dishes were delicious as were the fresh fluffy waffles/pancakes. Service was impeccable. I also really liked the bottles of fresh water in the fridge daily, and the afternoon tea, with no fewer than 6 snacks (savory and sweet), ice tea, lemonade, and wine. The only downside was that the cookies were all so delicious that I ate 2 per day :) The Inn was only a 5 minute drive from Chestertown itself, so close and convenient. My wife treated me to two nights at this absolutely wonderful B&B on Maryland's eastern shore. We had a blast reading, driving around the countryside and hanging out in the bookstore and cafe in downtown Chestertown. Chestertown is an 18th C river town that has maintained most of its original architecture. It's the kind of place people call "charming". I'll grant you that's not always a good thing, and I'll bet in summer or early spring the place gets over run with tourists, but since it was winter and pretty cold the cloying sweet-tea quality was minimal. Note that there are good restaurants in the town, but some of them (Blue Heron, for example) are pretty expensive. You can, however, find some pubs with good greasy victuals. Rooms: You have a choice of rooms/suites/or detached apartments. Prices vary accordingly. We stayed in the "Yellow Room" in the main house. The house was built in 1860, so the floorboards creak and the door was difficult to lock, but this really only adds to the "authentic antebellum" experience of the place (I suppose). And I don't mean to say there is any kind of Gothic decrepitude. This is decidedly not the house of Thomas Sutpen. Everything is clean, well appointed, and the bathroom furnishings are brand-spanking new. In fact, our tub had a whirlpool function! All rooms have a working fireplace. And each day the proprietor rebuilds your fire for you--that is, he stacks the newspaper, kindling, and wood in your fireplace for you. All you need to do in the evening is touch a match to the newspaper and away you go. It's amazing how perfectly the fires flare up: no blowing, prodding, praying, etc. And you don't have to feed it more paper to get the blaze roaring. I guess after building fires for 20 years, the owners have figured out how to do it. And you have enough extra wood in your room to keep the fire going for a long time. For me, this was the best thing about being at the Inn. There are several communal rooms. One is the back parlor. There you will find the bottomless cookie jars, the sherry decanter (take a glass up to your room to enjoy by the fire), and "early coffee"--i.e. coffee to drink if you get up before breakfast is served. There is a front parlor as well. This has a fireplace, a library, and an array of board games. And finally there is the dining area where you'll be twice each day. Once for breakfast, and once for an afternoon tea. Breakfast: Served from 8:30-10:00. Each morning starts with a bowl of fresh fruit and fresh baked sweet bread (scones, muffins), coffee, and juice. This will be followed by your choice of some kind of omelet, pancakes/waffles, and always a side of some sort of sliced pig. Wonderful! The breakfasts are ample and if you eat late enough, you probably won't need to eat lunch. Scrumptious. The afternoon tea is a great touch. In addition to a wide selection of teas, there are also sweet and savory snacks to enjoy. I guarantee you'll find it hard to leave this place once you've spent a couple of nights there. For those of you who feel vacation should have the rigors of your work life, then this isn't for you. But if you are looking to escape from the world a bit, stick your head in a book, wander through little coastal towns, and so forth, then I recommend this place. Please note that we went in February. So we were keen to hole up in front of the fire, in the whirlpool, or at the cafe in town. As the seasons change, I would guess the prevailing spirit of the Inn does as well. I have stayed in many rooms in this inn over the past ten years. The owners are absolutely wonderful. The food includes the best cookies with afternoon tea, and an unbelievable breakfast. The inn is the most amazing get away, I don't think my opinion of the town would be helpful since I have loved it since day one of my freshman year at Washington College. We stayed at the Inn for a long weekend with our two dogs in the pet friendly cottage. The cottage was nicely sized with comfortable furniture and lots of windows. They have incredible smelling bath products. If you are someone with a mobility challenge- the cottage and walking areas are very wheelchair friendly (if you bring a shower bench). The cottage has no steps to enter and doorways are at least 34-36 inches wide. There is no bathtub. The shower does have a very small step but did not feel like a heroic transfer. The owner offered to bring breakfast to the cottage but we opted to eat in the main house. They have a generously portioned breakfast of pastry, omelette with breakfast potatoes, and meat. The main house is gorgeous with beautiful landscaping. I also loved that they provided treats and supplies (water bowl/waste bags) for the dogs. Incredible experience! Highly recommended. read more

My wife and I stayed for two nights in the mulberry cottage. There is not one negative thing to say. What a relaxing environment. It was quiet, we slept with the windows open both nights. The cottage was private whether we were sitting on the porch drinking coffee or soaking in the Japanese tub we felt totally at ease. The cottage has everything you need: a fridge, DVD player, utensils, bar glasses and a wine opener. Perfect fall evenings the staff made us a fire even though it technically wasn't fireplace season yet. My husband and I were looking for a quick getaway and the Brampton Inn was the perfect choice. The staff is exceptionally accommodating, even with our specific vegan requirements. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous and our cottage seemed as though they had prepared it just for us. All amenities, check-in etc. are COVID compliant and they provided great recommendations for restaurants and activities in the Chestertown area. This is the type of place that leaves me living longing for my next visit. Thinking about the scrumptious breakfast, afternoon tea time snacks and the luxurious, southern style grounds makes me wish vacation time was here already. The 1860's style plantation house is beautiful and evokes an older time. The great thing about the Brampton, is that they have individual cottages off from the main house. Most of them are decorated in an antique style, although with modern amenities. The one off would be the cottage titled "The apartment in the woods". It's a 50's style ranch house that has a living room, full kitchen, etc. It's definitely a different feel than the rest of the cottages and rooms. I'm all for the B&B experience, except I don't want to be in a house full of people! So, the apartment is just what I like. The main house is just a short walk away, and they will bring you breakfast at your request. The Brampton offers a level of excellence that you would find at a four star hotel. The owners are very responsive and personable, and the soaps and bath products they sell are amazing. I can't wait to go back in June! So relaxing! read more

The inn is under new ownership and sadly, it is not the same. We booked a package deal at "The Apartment". This was described as a modern apartment in the woods - but it is actually right next to the main house. It does appear recently refurbished - it's just nowhere near the quality that we expected based on our many previous visits in other rooms and cottages on the property. The floor is all tile (cold) and there are no comfy chairs. The mattress was uncomfortable with big indentations on each side. The food was also not up to the usual standard. There was very poor communication from the owner about ongoing maintenance issues during our stay. The furnace was not working properly and we mentioned this every day to the staff - but the owner only came over one time to try and fix it. He brought a small space heater and then he never came back even though we complained about it again the next morning. At the end of the stay we mentioned that the heat was still a problem and his response was that he didn't want to call anyone to work on it while we were there because of COVID. He never discussed this decision with us, nor did he offer to move us to a better room - so I was uncomfortable and had to wrap myself in a quilt all day. I do not plan to return. read more

My husband and I came here for our first wedding anniversary. He had researched it online,read the reviews and felt it would be a nice weekend getaway for us. Good thing his researching paid off. We both are very very pleased with the service, the cleanliness, and the over all experience that we have had while staying here. Each room has it's own unique character. We plan on coming back again. They offer "teatime" from 3:00 to 4:00 every day and the teas are of fine quality and all of the bakery items are made fresh on the premises every day... and of course they have coffee. The breakfast is of quality as well. The table placements are very nicely set and the food is prepared fresh and very tasty! They always keep the refrigerator stocked with cold water for us and firewood in case we wanted to make a fire (which we did). The grounds are kept up nicely and it was very quiet and relaxing which is exactly what we wanted. The house has historic value which I find very interesting as well. This Establishment is also on the "select registry" list. The beds were super comfortable which allowed us to get a great nights sleep. They take pride in doing everything naturally which is important to me and they offer natural products in the gift shop and for use in the bath while your here. We just got back from our second stay at this amazing B&B. Danielle is great and the Mulberry Cottage is unforgettable. We stayed in the cottage is an unattached building on the property that has a fireplace, fantastic whirlpool tub, steam shower, and a Japanese soaking tub on the porch. The first time we stayed here was in August and we enjoyed it so much that we had to come back. The nightly fire that is built by "Cinderfella" is perfect. Stayed in the Sunset Garden Cottage on a cold snowy night, enjoyed the fireplace and tub in our beautifully decorated room. The next morning, breakfast was brought to our room, piping hot and so delicious. I would 100% recommend this to anyone and hope to return again. This is a first-rate inn, and a wonderful place to relax. I arrived by myself in January, looking for the solitude I needed to finish a book. I'll be back. The inn is an easy drive from the Wilmington train station. I settled into vacation mode as the sprawl of Delaware gave way to the stubbled fields and brick farmhouses of Maryland's eastern shore. I ate good food every night I was there. The surrounding area has a range of options, from local salt-of-the-earth taverns to fine restaurants. The commercial part of Chestertown is also conveniently close (for buying groceries and wine). The accommodations were luxurious and tastefully decorated. I might have spent the whole vacation in my bathrobe, enjoying my cottage's deep bathtub, steam shower, and Japanese soaking tub (this in an indoor-outdoor space, with a sunset view towards the treeline). My hosts were friendly and generous, even as they quietly respected my need to write. And the cost of my stay was very reasonable, given the quality of the inn and the beauty of the surroundings. If the Brampton Inn is within your budget, you can't go wrong by staying here. read more

The Brampton Inn is an outstanding B&B in Chestertown. We've stayed there twice and were very pleased with the experience both times. Rooms are spacious and well kept. Breakfast is gourmet quality and varied. The owner/chef makes sure you don't get the same thing for breakfast every day if your stay is for multiple days. Superb 2-day stay at the Inn's Mulberry Cottage-luxurious without being pretentious. We enjoyed a late fall weekend with great weather, wonderful innkeepers who care about the food they serve, the decor and amenities around the Inn and grounds, and making sure every guest can and does enjoy the area. It's really hard to describe how amazing The Brampton Inn is. It is the epitome of casual elegance - making you feel both completely at home and totally pampered. The grounds feel like a secret garden, lush and tucked away from the road, quiet and full of flowers and wildlife. It is inherently romantic - every room in the Inn is beautifully appointed and maintained; the food is phenomenal. Nothing about this place feels contrived - it is just an incredibly well-designed, well-maintained inn with a friendly and accommodating staff who excel at what they do. I was married there at an intimate brunch wedding, and the experience could not have been better. The Brampton specializes in intimate weddings, and this was evident by the care they put into our big day - the flowers, the food: the entire experience was stunning, and ran smoothly. Rachel and Rita were incredibly accommodating of all of our - and our guests' - needs. Our guests loved the experience - people began planning events we could hold there in the future, and commented all weekend about the things they loved about it (too numerous to list!). We were thanked several times for choosing it as our wedding venue. I cannot recommend the Brampton highly enough - whether you're looking for a weekend away on the eastern shore, or planning an intimate wedding, they are a superlative destination. read more

Such a beautiful and wonderful place. We stayed here for our son's wedding in the Russell Cottage. My husband is temporarily disabled and we were concerned about the accommodations. It was perfect! Parking right by the cottage with bars and benches as needed inside. The room was gorgeous. Breakfast, which was a gourmet feast every morning, was delivered every day to the cottage as we could not make it to the main house. The staff and the owner are so gracious. Its a cut above the other accommodations in the Chestertown area. We had booked because of a family wedding in Rock Hall, and we realized that the Brampton was ideally located just on the outskirts of effusively charming Chestertown proper. It is just a short drive to a bevy of restaurant choices, most of which are highly recommended. But I digress, what I'm focusing on here is the outstanding service and the tranquil surroundings that this B&B brings to bear. We stayed in the 'treehouse' room (the Green room), which although is up 3 flights of steps, is very spacious and exudes that cozy vibe. We were greeted to large comfortable bed, great linens, a clean shower/bath, and the ability to micro-regulate the temp, a plus for a B&B. Truth be told, because of our event, we did not stay in the room much, but we were able to experience the wonderful afternoon tea service and equally stellar breakfast, all presented with a smile and efficient service. Don't know when we'll be back, but if ever in this area we will definitely be staying here again! read more

This is such an amazing B&B that I decided to devote my 100th Yelp review to singing its praises. The setting is rural, serene, and scenic, minutes from Chestertown and the Chesapeake Bay yet miles away from everything that would remind you of urban or (even worse) suburban life. The inn is historic, and it shows, but it's a working place that is well-loved and gorgeously maintained. This is no secret, since B&B guidebooks and newspaper cover stories in places like the Washington Post and NY Times have rated it highly. But reading these reviews cannot replace the actual experience of staying here for a night or two. It hits all the right B&B buttons and then some. When we stayed in early fall, the morning light was enchanting and the nights were made for sitting on the porch savoring the cool breezes. The common rooms, dining room, and bedrooms are all elegant and tasteful, while the grounds practically beg to be explored. There is no other place like this on the Eastern Shore. read more
