They discovered that my woodstove inserted into the fireplace had a back plate attachment that made it impossible to get to the stovepipe connection going up the chimney. They pulled out the woodstove, removed the back plate and performed a thorough cleaning. David said that the back plate was not needed, given the way the woodstove was installed, and so we left it off to simplify future cleanings.
