Loved the $5 coupon after checking in on Yelp! We were off to a good start! We saw a plate of nachos at the table next to ours, which looked delicious. We were inspired! When our nachos arrived, we were disappointed. They looked like they had been sitting under a heat lamp for far too long. We had also requested that tomatoes be added, but there were very few. As we started to eat the nachos, we discovered that there were very dry. The server stopped by to see if everything was okay, but she seemed annoyed when we asked for a side of salsa and some extra sour cream. We didn't mention anything about the nachos being dry at this point because we were still hopeful that they would be okay with the addition of more sour cream and salsa. Unfortunately, it didn't help. When the waitress stopped by again, we had made our way through almost the entire plate...still hoping for a bite of delicious nachos. It never happened. Instead we were left with very dry chips, very dry meat, and hardened cheese. I showed it to our server and she waffled over what to say. She said we should have told her sooner, which is probably true. I asked her if they're normally dry like that and she said that she orders them all the time and has never gotten a complaint from a customer. She never actually answered my question. I just wanted to know if I should order them on my next visit. If this batch was a fluke, then okay, I would try them again on my next visit. However, if that's how they're normally served...no way! Our server still didn't know what to say. I asked to speak to a manager and she told me that they're all managers lol. She clearly had no management experience, so I asked her to talk to the chef. After speaking with the chef, our server returned with a coupon for a free order of nachos and then admitted that they were very dry. I thought that providing the coupon was a fair way to handle it. I was unable to use the Yelp coupon since we decided to end our visit at that time and did not hit the required $25 spend. The server kindly gave me $5 off coupon since the Yelp coupon would expire in a few hours. So, all in all, not the best order of nachos, but they did their best to make it right. I'm giving 2 stars because I'm not from around here and maybe that's how people like their food? Pros: the people were nice. Outdoor seating. Cons: i ordered Mexican style tacos. They were served as it's suppose to with 2 soft corn tortillas. The meat i ordered looked correct. The problem was the meat didn't taste like it should. But they did put a generous amount. The flavor was missing. In another dish it would have been fine. The cilantro looked like it was about to turn bad or was bad. I'm surprised they even served it. The black beans had too much cumin and the rice was more like uncle bens type of par broiled rice. The salsa tasted like vegetable soup... with carrots and celery and canned tomatoes. It wasn't that bad but it was not salsa and shouldn't be called that. I wish i had tried their burgers as thats what seemed to get the best reviews. Unfortunately i may not be back. A group of 5 arrived just in time. This gem of a restaurant is right on the corner, just a few blocks off the highway. They have a small parking area, so you may need to use the bank lot across the street. The restaurant is clean with a nice wood-work finish on the inside. We got there just at the right time and were able to get 5 seats at the small bar - we basically took all available seats at the bar. The restaurant was full and by the time we left, there were almost a dozen waiting to be seated in the small vestibule entrance. I'm not sure if they take reservations but they do offer take-out. With a full restaurant, I would not rate this as a quiet place, but it wasn't overly loud either... just a room full of people enjoying good conversation and food. They have both a full mexican-style menu and a full bar with both domestic and local craft beers on tap as well as a wide variety of liquor options. Martinis seem to be their specialty. We had a drink with some appetizers, all of which was served promptly by super friendly and engaging bartenders. The wait staff was hopping and appeared to be able to handle the full restaurant with ease. I will visit this restaurant again for more than just a drink and an app and look forward to trying something off their menu. read more

Dear Mike H. The reason why this is a supposed favorite is because it was voted that way by the owner him/herself!!! I can make better Mexican food than that at home, and I'm not even a cook!!! If my only complaint about a restaurant is the paucity of parking, then it is a great restaurant, and better than the other Mexican restaurants in Hazleton. Safer too, by the look of them. I don't know what's up with some of these negative reviews. This place is really good, with a great menu. They recently fixed the parking situation, and added a really nice deck to eat on on nice days. When I've eaten there, we've had really nice wait staff as well. The burritos, in my opinion, are great. I will say this though...those chips from their "chips and salsa" are god awful. my boyfriend and I went out to eat here since the first experience for me was great, this time? not so much, server was literally checking her Apple watch while she was taking our order, not a huge deal but I've been in this industry for 25 years and I would NEVER do that!, I asked about the lobster taco n she said it was "packed" so I was like ok cool (for $13-$15 idr the price) I'm down, I got the lobster taco and one other beef one, well, the lobster taco had MAYBE the size of my pointer finger in it cut into 2 pieces (packed with gross cabbage) and the beef one was so over loaded with dry, gross, 5-7 day old cabbage it was just gross! i get the price of lobster and fresh seafood is up there but come on! and the tacos shells were old and crusty, the empanada dough was so off with our app too....i make empanadas and those were not it! The rice they serve on the side of the tacos was gross as hell! First time it came out cold n I said "I don't mean to be an asshole but it's cold" n she was like "ur not an asshole for that" we both laughed n she got me a new side n it was disgusting! Idk how this place is "loved" bc it was all around just gross!!! I NEVER leave bad reviews but it was just all around a bad experience! Unfortunately the quality and portion sizes don't measure up to the prices. The best tip I can give is stick to staples like tacos and burritos. You get into ripoff territory with the fancier, more expensive entrees. Also, they don't provide complimentary chips and salsa like most Mexican restaurants. You got to pay for it. We came here after a friend's recommendation and we weren't disappointed. We had the tijuana salad with chicken, asian steak taco, ahi tuna taco and the fish taco. All of them were pretty good, but the tijuana salad was the only one outstanding. The plates came with refried beans and rice on the side and were very tasty. The steak and ahi tuna were perfectly cooked, although the sauces could have been better. We only had water, but I heard good things about the margueritas and the desserts descriptions seemed appealing. We eat at the Brass Buckle 3-4 times per month and the food is fantastic. We have eaten at various Mexican Restaurants throughout the United States and the Brass Buckle is one of our favorites. My personal favorite is the Sirloin Combo but I substitute a beef burrito for the beef enchilada. The nachos grande and seafood nachos are an excellent choice as an appetizer. We had my sons christening party and my parents anniversary party in the upstairs dining room and they did great job with a large and diverse guest list. Can not believe that I'm the first to rate this restaurant since supposedly this has been the local Mexican favorite for several years. It's apparent that the folks in PA don't get out of the area much if this is one of the "top" favorites. Hmmm or maybe it was the fact that I was a party of one in a plaid flannel shirt, jeans and work-boots. No wait I'm in PA. Anyway, this was simply okay. The atmosphere was better than the food. The dining area is basically in the basement of an old house with the kitchen upstairs. It was rather interesting watching the "cook" run the food down and the orders back up. Probably why it took FOREVER to get my food, let alone the three years it took to get my order. Had the chicken fajita which is served with shredded lettuce,diced tomatoes, shredded cheese, home made salsa, sour cream, guacamole and two tortillas folded on a plate. The chicken is grilled and then cut into strips and added to grilled onions and peppers. The whole thing was somewhat swimming in oil and didn't have much fajita flavor/seasoning. It wasn't the worst nor the best, basic middle road. Guess it's PA sense of Mexican. No rice, no beans came with the fajita. There was a dinner salad that came with the dinner. An interesting concept. You had a choice of high calorie dressings, no low-cal food here in this section of the US. The salad was also topped with the homemade salsa, which I guess was the way to add tomatoes. I only wish that they hadn't put the entire core of the lettuce into the bowl, I really don't like the rabbit chewing on white lettuce core. Other than that, the salad was tasty and I was able to get the Italian off to the side. Not sure if it was home made, either way it was separating and was basically veggie oil with a hint of seasoning. I ordered guacamole and chips as an appetizer and was interested to find out that both items were ala carte separately. Mexican without the usual chips & salsa at the table?? Again, guess it's a PA thing. The guac appeared to be homemade, it was fair. I personally think my wife makes guacamole 1000x better. Oh well, the joys of travel. On a positive side, the beer was cold and tasty. Bottom line, I really won't put this place on my "return list" and really don't see how this place has been voted a "favorite". But, then again, this is Hazleton, PA where the dining options are rather limited and narrow, unless you're the king or queen of fast-food. read more

The food was awful and maybe its because I was expecting "Mexican". I had chicken tacos. The chicken was grilled and cubed. Not shredded in sauce like I'm used to. The tortilla was stuffed with lettuce, cheese, and some kind of topping (salsa I think). I'm almost positive I tasted pickles. I agree with Mike H. Well I read the previous review so I was a little wary. And I'm from California, so I have had pretty good Mexican food, and I had set my expectations for Conygham, PA. But even so... The server was perfectly nice. We went with kids that were 2, 5, and 7 and they really were able to accommodate them quite well. They ended up having spaghetti and essentially chicken nuggets with curly fries. The spaghetti actually looked pretty good, being prepared with angel hair pasta. The service was pretty slow, I mean it was not very full but seemed to take forever for the food to come out. Anyways, back to us. We had their drink specialty which was a margarita with sangria which we were assured you could not get anywhere else. There is probably for a reason for that, it was OK but nothing special. The chips that we got with guac were pretty good actually, though the guac was nothing special. I got the carne asada with a salad (having been frightened by the previous review of the fajitas). The salad was actually reasonable (I mean if you overlook the iceberg lettuce, but this is small town PA). The house dressing was quite nice, a sort of combination salsa and italian dressing. The most scary part for me though was the entrée, it reminded me of that weird red-sauced spanish rice you got from a box, served with a nicely cooked steak (they asked how I wanted it cooked) smothered with a, well I don't know how to describe it, some sort of sauce. It does not resemble any other carne asada I have never had. And there were a couple pretty oily flour tortillas. It was just barely OK. The best part was the meat itself. But after I had that I could not wait to get out of there. I appreciate funky places and odd interpretations of foreign food found in small towns. I think of of the strengths of the places is it's quite a local hangout with a crowd of regulars. The decor is also pretty amazingly funky, and I have heard that coming in October leading up to Halloween is something special. I might actually go back if I find myself in Conyngham again, but I will not expect anything Mexican. The outdoor seating is very nice. It does get pretty busy sometimes. The menu could have more selection because you look at it and #1 NO TAMALES!? And #2 most of the stuff isn't even Mexican what is this a MEXICAN restaurant or a diner? And #3 the dry tortilla chip bowl you get for your salad tastes like old feet. :s. But, the nachos are good and the gourmet fried chili chorizo taco I got was delicious and super spicy. French fries are also good too. Servers are always prompt and friendly. Food was really awful. I had what the menu called a burrito. I have had way better frozen burritos from the grocery store. This burrito was a small tortilla with some crumbled chicken and cheese. It was cold with no taste. I think it came with black beans and rice, which looked and tasted more like rice-a-roni. The wine selection and margaritas are below average.
