I came to these guys for help with my personal income taxes after recently founding a startup. Because the company itself is just designed to hold my investment while I develop a product, my lawyers who structured my company gave me very simple guidelines: 1. My seed investment is NOT income (common knowledge). 2. My wages from the business are LOSSES for tax purposes (company won't make revenue in 2015). 3. I should DEDUCT these losses from my personal income tax at the percentage of my ownership of the company. I explained these guidelines to the guys at Brass Taxes via email, asking if they made sense and if they could help me file. They said sure, everything looked good, and set me up with an appointment. As soon as I sat down for the appointment, the woman helping me told me "what you told us in your email isn't usually how we do this". I asked what that meant, and she basically told me not to worry about it. I told her that if something was unclear, I had my Operating Agreement, sale of equity vouchers, and emails from my lawyer with me to help explain things. I even asked if she wanted the number of my % equity in the company, as my lawyer said that would be vital in determining my tax rate. She was busy clicking something on the computer. She ended up taking my numbers for income and deductible expenses, but we never touched on anything my lawyers told me to make sure we did, even though she had my email right in front of her and I brought it up several times. Eventually she handed me my tax vouchers with numbers WAY higher than I was expecting and no explanation of the calculations involved. I asked if we had done everything correctly and she said yes, so I paid. On the taxi ride back to my apartment I called my lawyer to ask if the numbers were even in the ballpark. They were not. I emailed the woman at Brass Taxes as soon as I got home asking for the calculations she used and/or why she didn't follow the directions my lawyer gave me... no reply. If there was some real reason why the directions my lawyer gave me were wrong, I wouldn't mind doing things her way--but I was given no explanation and any time I brought it up it was met with "I'm not sure about that" or "we can come back to that" without ever actually discussing it. She never asked any colleagues about my situation or what my lawyers said, she just ignored the subject and moved on to whatever was next on her itinerary. Yes, they "did my taxes", but they didn't seem to care if they were missing anything or if I could/should be paying less (in my case, literally thousands of dollars less). Honestly they just seemed dismissive, and more than willing to take advantage of the fact that I didn't have much experience with this material. I felt like someone in a drive-thru being rushed to make room for the next person in line. And they felt like those 40 minutes of negligence was worth a $125 consultation fee. Never again. If there was some misunderstanding and I'm completely in the wrong, I'm more than willing to change this review, but I've still not heard anything back from them. At the very least I was hoping paying that $125 fee would entitle me to a timely email response. Still waiting. UPDATE: The owner Rus emailed me on JUNE 3rd saying "I'll send over your refund now". It's NOVEMBER 3rd and I still haven't seen a cent of my money back. UPDATE: Turns out I did get a refund on JUNE 3rd, but because Brass Taxes uses Venmo for payments it wasn't reflected on my bank statement when I went to look for it later. read more

Thought I'd use them because I freelance and thought they'd do better with deductions and such. They give you very little info about the process, what they need from you, and what is on you as far as filling and paying your taxes. I found myself wishing I'd stuck with turbotax the whole way through. Which is pretty sad. read more

From my experience tax people can be bitter and unhealthy and they make your tax experience more of a nightmare than it already is. Not with Rus. He knew just how to keep me calm, playing the coolest jams whilst talking to me almost like a psychologist. His walls are painted a very relaxing shade and he's got some cool wall paper too. I'm a freelance copywriter and Brass Taxes knows everything I can write off and even held my hand through making quarterly tax payments. Being new to freelance, they have answered so many emails for me the past six months I really feel like they should have charged me more. If you work in an even remotely creative industry (advertising, teaching, artists, etc) GO HERE. It's reasonably priced, you can Skype if you don't want to go to Brooklyn or live out of town (I'm moving to LA and will continue to use them), you get a better refund than the chain places like H&R Block, and don't sweat the fee - it's tax deductible the following year! I lived and worked, and was taxed, outside the US for part of the year, and had self-employment income in the US for the rest of the year. Hired them for the first time 2 years ago based upon these reviews. The first year they forgot to file my taxes and waited until the very last day, even after I told them in March I was going to be out of the country and had to prepare before leaving because I couldn't count on connecting to wifi once I left. I thought perhaps it was the mistake of the woman I worked with, so I made an appointment with a different person last year. Last year after preparing my taxes - the preparer incorrectly removed a $3000 income credit because he couldn't remember why it was there. It would have increased what I owed in taxes by roughly $1000. Thank goodness I caught the difference. Did not even offer a proper apology and I believe this was the owner. What an unnecessary mistake. Can't wait for the third strike - has caused too much stress the past 2 years. Feel more comfortable doing it myself. read more

I went here because of the glowing reviews and it seems like the 1 star reviews are more accurate than the 5 star reviews. From what I can see their service was great when they first started but as they grew they hired under qualified preparers with poor customer service skills. My preparer Karen was very short and rude when I asked her questions. Her excuse was that this was the end of tax season. She was typing say at her computer and I had no idea what she was doing.( I don't think she did either) this was further evidenced by the fact that she got up and started asking the owner questions about my return. Clearly she was lost / confused. When I got up to go and see What they were talking about she told me to go back to my seat. They were taking about MY TAXES. She was really embarrassed by her own behavior. The owner on the other hand answered my questions politely while she was telling me to go back to my seat. At this point I was fed up and told the owner that I was comfortable with her doing my return for obvious reasons he was okay with this and I left. I wouldn't take any chances with my taxes and I suggest you don't either. read more

As a freelancer finding a good accountant to do my taxes is difficult and important. I have been paying a lot for an accountant and heard good things about Brass Taxes, and I wanted to cut the cost of paying for an accountant. From arriving, I see that this place is like a higher end HR Block etc.... The rates are not that cheap when it is all said and done, I also do not like being in an open room discussing my private information with other clients sitting right next to me.... The place should be more private etc The woman that did my taxes, was awful, she did not know a lot about tax laws and deductions (important for freelancers). I am curious if she is an actual accountant and if Brass tax uses real licensed CPA's or if it is people that take a tax class similar to HR Block? The woman was ignorant to a lot stuff, but the main issue that I had with her was that she was dismissive, condescending, off-Standish and callous... I did not like her attitude at all. She was awful, she seemed annoyed and like she did not want to be there. I had to constantly explain to her tax laws and deductions... Overall, Brass Tax was not too bad, I would have given them a higher rating if it was not for the sub-par employee... I may or may not give it another try.... read more

You don't think of tax-doing as an opportunity to not only *do taxes, but to network, set career goals, laugh, brainstorm, catch up (you also don't think about writing a Yelp review about a tax prep service)-- but over the past five or so years that I've used brass taxes, I find tax time not just not-stressful, but a kind of nice wrap up to the year. There is definitely an overabundance of intelligence here, and it finds its outlet in helping you understand your taxes, finding opportunities for savings, offering advice for thinking through next year -- I've asked for counsel on salary negotiations, international employment, and other general financial matters, too. For me it's no small thing that the owner has worked in comedy (and is actually funny). I don't laugh easily but see humour as a most compelling evidence of intelligence and understanding. And down to brass taxes: the uploading and video options make it easy to manage an appointment (I've even had my taxes done from London), taxes are always in on time, and I always get a much-needed refund.
