Top Notch Breakfast and Dinner... Brasserie is the restaurant inside the Ambassade Hotel. My wife and I...along with another couple...had 4 breakfasts and 1 dinner there so this review reflects our experience. - Overall: 5 - Location: 5 (for Old Town and the Jordaan) - Exterior: 5 - Interior: 5 - Atmosphere: 5 - Menu: 5 - Food: 5 - Service: 5 (though the head waiter at dinner was full-of-himself) - Price and Value: 5 Pros: - Location: Convenient to the Old Town and Jordaan parts of Amsterdam. - Exterior: Handsome. A beautifully restored and maintained property. - Interior: Contemporary. Brasserie is a high end spot across 3 rooms, yet remains comfortable where conversation is easily accomplished. - Menu: Very healthy buffet at breakfast plus some items which can be ordered. Dinner offers French fare with a relatively light touch...though very different from the wellness-oriented breakfast. - Food: Excellent. The breakfast buffet is not huge, but full of healthy high quality items. I had 3 unbelievable versions of granola spooned from large jars and covered my bowl with the best tasting light Greek yogurt. Fruit and fish was super fresh...bread and pastries baked on premises amazing. Others in our group chose made-to-order egg dishes. It's all part of staying at the hotel. Dinner transformed Brasserie into a bistro with a French twist on many favorite dishes. Check the menu online. Portions are small - as expected - but quality was high. However, prices were very reasonable with most items under $30. - Service: Homey at breakfast..."French" for dinner. Everyone could not have been more friendly and helpful in the morning. Things were a bit more formal at night with a different crew. The chief waiter was very knowledgeable, but we agreed a bit arrogant. - Price and Value: Worth it. I believe the breakfast buffet is only for guests of the Ambassade Hotel. Brasserie is open to the public at night and quite reasonable. - Parking: None. Who has a car in Old Town? Cons: - The only one readily apparent was the brusque, off-the-cuff nature of our main server at dinner. He wasn't over-the-top, but not in keeping with the friendly vibe of the hotel. And that's coming from 2 couples who grew up in New York City and lived for many years in San Francisco and LA. Anyone can...and should...get dinner at Brasserie. There are many reasons to make reservations for a stay at the Ambassade - including access to their breakfast buffet. read more

We had very social Christmas meal at Brasserie fo seven courses. The food were unique and some thoughtful combinations with different kind of food choice. The restaurant was beautiful and the staff were very great with wine pairing. Excellent choice for a special Christmas meal. read more

Great experience here at the outdoor seating as we were walking around looking for a place to eat. Sat under the umbrellas watching the boats go by in the canal. Great location! We ordered the bread and butter which was great - bread was fresh and tasted really good with the butter spread on it. The crudite vegggies (carrots, cucumbers, endives, red peppers) were nice crisp crunchy and fresh tasted great with the red pepper hummus. And the veggie bitterballen were crispy on outside either a soft mushy filling on the inside. Service was friendly. We did have to ask for tap water instead of the bottled still water and they were totally fine with that. The hotel inside is really charming as I got to see some of it when using the restroom upstairs. There is also a cute library room inside. Seems like a very nice hotel. AMERICANS - Avoid this restaurant! Our waiter, Albert, clearly hates Americans. We were 1 of 2 American tables for dinner, and were intentionally provided awful service. As an example, for other tables, Albert would run through the menu and specials for the night. At the American tables, he would just say "what do you want". When I asked him about the beef dish his response was "it's just beef". Worst dining experience/service of my life (without exaggeration). Americans should avoid at all costs. read more

I was really excited to try this restaurant listed on the Michelin Bib Gourmand list, but it did not live up to the hype. The limited food menu was delicious (albeit with small portions and not very well timed), and the wine pairings were yummy; however, the aperitif drinks were not made well and service was underwhelming. The negroni was very basic, the dirty martini was made poorly, and the first champagne glass was served flat (little to no bubbles). Ambiance was a little stuffy and the wait staff made multiple errors (e.g. giving drinks to the wrong people and confusing the tasting menu), which they were quick to correct, but I expected more from such a highly regarded establishment. Overall, not worth the cost and I would not recommend. read more

A quiet spot with a small but good menu. The library is very cool and has a great ambiance. It is not a lively spot, but the food is good.

This place is stunning in its food offering. We began the evening with the perfect Bordeaux, after which we moved on to a delicious (and vegetarian - important for my fiancée) French onion soup. Delicious. Then, I had Bavette, which was immaculately tender and cooked perfectly rare (I'm certain by sous vide), and my fiancée had the pumpkin ravioli. Exquisite, all of it. The service was phenomenal, and we felt welcomed immediately. This place is part of a hotel, but you wouldn't realize it from the inside - don't let that deter you if you happen to be walking by! read more

TL:DR for the LIBRARY BAR- They take credit cards, speak English, great cocktails. It started to rain as we were walking down the street so we decided to duck into this cute bar lined with books upon books. We sat ourselves. The bartenders are very nice, make great cocktails, and are as fast as they can. Please don't forget that they accommodate the entire restaurant upstairs as well as the bar downstairs. They're not ignoring you. They are BUSY. 6 OYSTERS + BUBBLES - I teeter on how I felt about the oysters. They smelled fresh, tasted fresh (very mild brine), but left the most horrible after taste in my mouth. It took so much effort for me to get the taste out of my mouth hours after leaving. Alcohol, toothpaste, mouthwash, lemon didn't help. Thankfully there were no issues the next day. BREAD + BUTTER - Crispy crust with a fluffy inside. The butter was rich, just salty enough, and easily spreadable. APEROL SPRITZ - I know, I know. NYT said this was the most terrible drink. I disagree. I have had some terrible ones in my life, but thankfully, that didn't happen here! Everything tasted the way it should. Not too sugary because of too much Aperol, not watered down because they used too much soda water. Great hotel bar to check out along the canal. It never got too busy when we were there and noise was kept to a minimum. read more

This was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. We both got the chef's menu with the wine pairing. The starter was a mix of fish from pickled herring to tuna salad. This was my first time eating pickled herring, and I liked it. Main course was steak with chantral sauce, fried veal brain, and veggies. One of the best steaks of my life. Dessert was almond ice cream with honey and cheesecake with raspberry sauce. The wine pairing was perfect. Each glass complimented each course. The wait staff are amazing. Beautiful place with really cool colorful artwork on the walls. A funky vibe but also chic. Not at all stuffy for a really nice place! The food was very good and the wine pairings top notch! The artichoke soup (seasonal monthly) has these crisp capers which was a really different texture for soup and I liked it! The sea bass was awesome with a flaky crust and perfect temp. The oysters.... yum! I wanted more. And with the champagne you can't go wrong. But the star of the show for me.... the escargot. Wow. 12 per order so maybe share (we should have) because they are filing with the bread to dip in the garlic sauce. Highly recommend those and this place overall! Great date spot!! read more

So far the best restaurant we ate in the area at the price. The service is very attentive, the daily specials are superb and the waiters do not ask to leave a little extra on the bill. The wine list was particularly well crafted, as you can get an excellent bottle of wine in high 20s. The daily special was a celery soup and was truly amazing. Came here after celebrating my engagement to my beautiful fiancee. I came to an expensive restaurant and ordered the 5 course tasting meal and wine paring to learn about the food. The explanation of the food, and of the wine pairing was very poor, almost non-existent. Instead the wait staff just dropped the beautiful meal in front of me and walked away. Definitely amazing food and service! We went here as one of our choice restaurants for our honeymoon and it didn't disappoint. The wine was delicious and we decided to do the chef's special - I did the fish while my husband did the meat. It was three courses which included a dessert. Both were very unique but equally tasty and we enjoyed sharing with one another. We tried new foods we hadn't before (veal brain for one!) and had foods we were used to presented in a different way. The wait staff was extremely attentive and nice and they even gave us a special plate that said happy honeymoon. We had a reservation at this fine establishment at 630PM on a Wednesday. We arrived early and had some drinks at the Library Bar downstairs from the restaurant. We had steak tartare, escargot, and octopus for our appetizers. We had a goat cheese salad and the duck confit for our entrees. The view through our window was blessed with a beautiful glance at a peaceful canal. The food was a 5/5 as everything was flavorful without being over salted. The service was top notch and truly attentive without being intrusive. We appreciated the great environment and experience. We especially loved the Romanian waitress who was kind and wonderful with us. This place is a must visit for any local or anyone who intends to spend some time in Amsterdam. read more

My mother and I had dinner here this evening and it was delicious! We started with a drink in the Ambassade Hotel, which has a bar underneath the restaurant. We each enjoyed a cosmo-both of us have had many cosmos and this by far was one of the best. Robin was our bartender and he was excellent- he pours a perfect cocktail each and every time and he is more than happy to share the recipe. After cocktails we moved upstairs and had a light and flavorful of gazpacho to start our meal. For a main course, mother had the hake (flaky, white fish) and I had the flank steak with salad and frites and it was tender and flavor full. For dessert, we had the creme brûlée and the chocolate cake and neither disappointed us! Would highly recommend to anyone staying in Amsterdam! read more
