My son Brody and I were in Amsterdam on our way to Germany and we wanted some authentic Dutch food while we were there. After reviewing best Dutch restaurant on Yelp, VS was #1. We sat on the patio. Our server brought us complementary bread with butter while we read through the menu. I'm told my meal was authentic Dutch food, but it just seemed like a strange combination. The name slipped my mind, but it was a Power mashed potatoes with endive, but the meatball on top with brown gravy and then be beside that with some type of smoked sausage with a pile of mustard. I've always felt that whatever food you put on a plate should taste good together sausage with the mustard with the meat and the gravy and the mashed potatoes just seem disjointed to me. With that sad, I ate every drop of it and enjoyed it so maybe I learned something from this meal. ‍ My son took the alternative approach and ordered a meal with Indonesian flavors; chicken with peanut sauce was the main entrée and it came with french fries. He definitely enjoyed his meal as well. I'm glad we gave VS a try. It turned out to be a good meal of Dutch food and a touristy area with food from all over the world. I dined here with my family and we had a truly great experience. Service was fantastic from start to finish--warm, attentive, and professional without ever feeling rushed. The restaurant itself is well-decorated, clean, and charming, with a small, quaint atmosphere that makes it perfect for a relaxed meal. The food was excellent. The seabass was perfectly cooked, the hot pot was flavorful, and the mussels were enormous--maybe a little too large, but still enjoyable. Every dish felt thoughtfully prepared, and you could tell other tables were enjoying their meals just as much as we were. The only challenge is the restroom access. The staircase leading down is very steep, and I'm not sure if there's an elevator. That said, this is pretty common in Amsterdam's historic buildings and didn't take away from the overall experience. All things considered, I would definitely return to Van Speyk. Great food, great service, and a warm, cozy setting make it a restaurant worth visiting. read more

This feels a bit like a tourist trip. I'd skip going forward. The service was okay...ish. I felt a bit like an inconvenience being a single table. My order wasn't completely right and I didn't really have a way to flag them. I asked for tap water - got bottled. I asked for an espresso and never got it. Just small things. The herring was pretty fishy and warm (like beyond room temperature). My main dish (Stamppot) was fairly good and presentation was nice. My wife had the Stamppot, a Dutch traditional dish with mashed potatoes, slow cooked meatball with gravy, served with smoked sausage, bacon and mustard. I paired mine with a Dutch single malt whisky, Frysk Hynder - light, not smoky and an easy drink. My wife had a Dutch wine, which was also nice. We were looking for nicer restaurants but working with limited options on a Monday and "settled" on this, but were in fact treated to a nicely cooked dinner, friendly conversation with a neighboring table from Ireland and Poland, and very welcoming and jovial service from a very nice server. It was a beautiful space, has a cozy and romantic feel. I had lamb and my wife had the white fish. The apple tart was really delicious, and the suggested wine pairings made a lot of sense. This meal was the sendoff meal before we headed back to the states from our Amsterdam trip, and I am so glad we decided to come here, it really was special. First off, reservations are a must, because restaurants fill up super quick in Amsterdam due to the crazy amount of tourists (like us!) The decor is very nice. Not too fancy and elegant, but beautiful chandeliers and classy environment. We had a great seat by the window, and two very accommodating waiters who helped us choose what we liked. The food was delicious, from top to bottom, we ordered the most Dutch meal that we could, and the kitchen really delivered. Cute little Dutch place that is right next door to the Renaissance hotel. We eat there every time we stay in Amsterdam. Please understand that it is very good and very popular so MAKE A RESERVATION! Most nights they are completely booked but you can usually get a table if you look online a couple of days beforehand or if you stop in a few days beforehand. We had herring as a starter and it was great and I had lamb chops for my main. They were served over perfectly cooked veggies (brassicas mostly) and served with a natural lamb jus. Fantastic! We're in Amsterdam with two different sets of friends, one of whom is vegan and they have enough items to make her happy as well as meat and fish options. Currently this is the most underrated restaurants in Amsterdam - phenomenal, probably Michelin-level cuisine. Their vegan ceviche is genius and really everything there is top notch, has surprising/brilliant flavor combinations...the chef is really top notch. That said I saw bitterballen on their Instagram recently & I'm worried they may be trying to cater to the lowest common denominator, which really would be tragic. Yet they explained it's extremely difficult to hire additional staff due to labor shortage so they can only accommodate a limited number of tables. Very charming setting. Rustic wooden floors and exposed brick walls countered with crystal chandeliers and well appointed, white linen covered tables made a very relaxing and upscale experience. Wow. The food here has been the best I've had while in Europe. I ordered the escargots, and the sea bass with potato puree, pesto, and herbs. The escargots arrived in their shell and coated in a breading. At first I was curious about this choice of preparation but when I pulled out the escargot from the shell with the breading and butter/sage? sauce I was immediately impressed. The escargot was the most tender and juicy I've EVER had in my life and I've had my fair share of escargot. Then my main dish was the fresh fish. It was cooked to perfection. I mean just cooked, juicy, flavorful and the herbs/puree, and pesto complimented the fish as if they have always been meant to be served together. I feel like this restaurant should have all of the Michelin stars! The service was also wonderful. My servers were friendly and super conversational. I enjoyed chatting with them. The restaurant itself is clean, classy, and a nice place to dine with family, or on a date, or even like me - a single gal experiencing the city for the first time. Got extremely lucky when coming here last night. Couldn't call for a reservation as we didn't have a local number and our receptionist wouldn't help us out we decided to walk over. There was a table of 6 leaving and the place was full. We got seated and was served right away. I got the french onion soup, amazing ! It was perfect the onions and the cheese well done. The steak was good but the few veggies that came with it weren't fully cooked. The lamb was juicy and the veggies were packed with garlic and spices. What a treat this place is. We also got the beef carpaccio it was made well and flavourful. We kept seeing other dishes people were ordering in the restaurant and we all wanted to try the duck or the escargots they were huge ! If you do go here know that they have their own aquarium downstairs with oysters and lobsters right beside the kitchen and the bathrooms, but do be careful those stairs are serious business extremely steep. read more

Unfortunately this place did not impress. I was excited about it but it was disappointing. The dish I had "duck" not very good and they were kind enough to take it off the bill. I did explain that I do not care about that, I only care about the food experience but the guy that it is in charge of the menu insisted.
