The hair cut always starts with a wash, then cut, then blow dry, then more cut. Even though my haircut was only an hour (I have long thick hair), I never feel rushed. This time I saw Aki and he really listened to me when I said to thin my hair out (especially on left side of head). He was attentive and was very meticulous and detail oriented. Such a great experience! Found this salon on Google as I prefer to go to places that specialize in asian hair. With the heat this summer I've been wanting a chop and impulsively decided today was the day. I was able to easily book a same-day appointment online. The space is very clean, in a convenient location, and the entire staff is friendly and respectful. I had a 10min consultation with Oliver who was very knowledgeable, listened to what I wanted and gave me great advice on what would look best. He gently advised me that I maybe shouldn't go as short as I initially wanted - GREAT ADVICE and I'm glad I took it. At each step of the cut he checked in asking if I liked the length, how it fell, etc. This continued in the styling process where he asked if I was okay with hair oil, which I appreciated because stylists tend to just throw product on. I moved to DC, but after trying four different salons, I started traveling back to NYC every few months so I could have Aki or Oliver cut and color my hair. Let me just say they did refund me for this TERRIBLE experience, but I'm still so angry with the bad hair color that I have to go back to my regular colorist to fix it next week. I came here twice before for haircut, which were both fine because I only wanted some trims at my ends and bangs. But I did notice that the stylists couldn't understand me without a translator, which was a huge sign that I should not come here for hair color, especially if you plan to go for a lighter hair color like blonde. The stylist who cut my hair the second time said he could dye my hair for me. So I came here again. Huge mistake. What really bugs me is that he bleached my roots first and the cover it with a dark brown. Then what's the point of bleaching if it's still gonna be orange and dark??The color transition also looks so bad that I almost cried. They said they could fix it for free but I wouldn't risk it again. This is a place that you can come in for a quick haircut, maybe a blowout. But I won't recommend it for coloring your hair like the previous reviews say. read more

First time I visited for Milbon Deep Treatment and Carbonated Short Head Spa. My scalp felt very light after no more dandruffs. Milbon treatment helped with smoothness of my hair cause my hair was very damaged of over-bleaching. Stylist, Aki was very gentle for the whole process and even offered a short shoulder massage. His assistant was very nice and helpful as well. They gave me take home Milbon kits to apply once a week. They also sell the Milbon hair products, I've been using Milbon blowout primer since 2019 luckily, they had it. Second time I received their coloring service, everything went well except the color didn't come out as I expected, little disappointing but he explained me that my hair is too damaged to hold the color pigments. Third time I was there for hair cut. Aki was great at layering the hair, he gave me gorgeous layers. I would definitely recommend for haircuts and deep treatments. read more

Wow! What a hidden gem I just found!!! Let me just say that in 8 years that I have lived in NYC, this is the first time I left the salon feeling beautiful and understood. Aki, is so humble yet knows what he's doing. Very professional from start to finish. The salon is clean with a really nice vibe. I felt so relaxed the whole time I was there. The color did not come out the way I want. my hair became very dry after a week of this poor service. The color also did not stay longer than 2 weeks. It was very hard to communicate with the colorist because he can barely speak Eng. So after a week, I decided to ask for a full refund which Brave Salon agreed to refund it. A few weeks passed by, I contacted them again- they said they have to contact the Japan location for approval. I didn't hear anything back so I contacted again. This time they said they cant give me a full refund?! So I told Brave Salon you cannot go back fourth- it's very unprofessional. So they said yes, they will refund me. Then they contacted me again and said they they cannot refund me cuz I did not pay regular price! WOW! why does it matter what price I paid? Their service SUCKS regardless? Does it mean I paid less and I should receive less quality service? Do not go here please. DO not support business that has bad morals and want to scam you. Let's spread the words and NOT go here so this salon will be out of business. I love Brave! I initially risked coming here because it's in my area and their "first-time customer" deals are very incentivizing. I was so pleased by the care that these sweet stylists bring to their work at this quaint little salon. Their services are "Tokyo style" - which means a cup of tea, a generous back rub, and a long shampoo and scalp message. I was amazed at how thorough the scalp massage was without making my hair tangled at all. They finish this off with a delicious hot towel wrapped tightly around your hair - very calming and clean. Ted was my colorist, and he matched my color perfectly. I've gone back many times for cut, color, and blowouts, and they've all turned out great and don't take a ton of time. I'd only suggest bringing a picture of any certain style you want, since there can be slight language barrier around the details. This is my first ever Yelp review despite having used Yelp for YEARS now. That's how AMAZING Aki is. In the past several years, I've done everything a gal can do to her hair: I've had it lightened from virgin black hair to Isla Fisher redhead to the ambitious platinum blonde. I've had the impulsive bangs to the break-up pixie cuts and then, after months of regret, tape-in hair extensions. It's safe to say that my hair now has more issues than Vogue. Recently, I've moved back to NYC after living in a desert. My hair is still adjusting to the climate change. It's been especially frizzy and my split ends were getting out of control. I scheduled a same-day (practically walk-in) appointment with Aki when I realized that I needed to start down the path of (hair) healing. Hurrying after work, I found myself in a quiet and serene haven when I stepped into BRAVE. It's white and minimal with tasteful pops of color. There's appropriately soft jazzy pop playing in the background. After I completed a form with questions about my hair and what I wanted to do with it today as well as any issues I wanted to address at the same time, Aki spent some time thoughtfully assessing my hair. Then, he made it clear what he was going to do: trim my shoulder-length hair to a chin-length blunt bob. I really appreciated that since some hair stylists will just go ahead and do what they may, leaving you a bit in the dark. Next, he spent at least 15 minutes washing and shampooing/conditioning my hair. At least. Maybe it was 20? It was very relaxing! Also, I'm the type of person that prefers minimal small talk and Aki understood that right away. I greatly appreciated that after a long work day. By the way, Aki KNOWS what he's doing with Asian hair. As an Asian woman, that's absolutely invaluable! I left the salon feeling like a million bucks (without paying a million bucks). I had a wonderful haircut done by Aki at BRAVE salon the other day. I had my hair done at the local salon that did a terrible job so I was terrified to try a new salon to fix it. I researched through google and yelp to find this salon. What a find!!! I don't blame my former stylist who couldn't cut my hair because I have lots of hair that are super thick and kinky in parts and the shape of my head is kind a tricky. Lol So unless the stylist have a knowledge and skills to cut this type of hair, it's very hard to get the style I want. Aki was professional, efficient, explaining everything he was doing step by step. He also kept his general chit-chat to minimum which is very important to me. After all, long day of work hours for mom of 3, the last think I want to do is to have a social conversation, right? Anyway, the haircut was superb beyond expectation. From start to finish was exactly 1 hour including thorough shampoo and light massage (= pure Heaven!). I also can't stress enough how wonderful it is to have a shampoo AFTER getting a haircut which makes more sense, so you don't have to deal with short prickly hair all over in your hair when you get home.
