My name is Tyler McReynolds, and I have a long history with this business, this location, and the people who have been involved in running it - and, unlike many of the reviews, I actually went here. My brother also went here 2 years before me, he was there for 6 months. He was sober 15 years and I was in AA for 10 years consecutively. I know exactly what goes on at this place, regardless of how you guys want to dress it up over time, or slap on a new coat of paint, or LLC. I am sad to see it, but I do find it very fitting, that you all still have Steel on Steel listed on the current website, in 2025. Mark Houston was really proud of that, which I think is a fact that is worth considering, if you guys who work there now were also subjected to it. For others I will explain what Steel on Steel was. Let's say today, right now, there are 30 clients in treatment. All of those people are in a treatment cetner, because something has happened for them to be so down and out, or otherwise confused, that they have now ended up in a treatment center. Many are broken, shunned by their family, and quite simply embarrassed and unsure of how to proceed or even what is going on. Steel on Steel is picking out one of those desparate, broken clients, and forcing them to sit in the center of the room, where everyone else sits around them in a circle. So 40 people sitting in a circle, with 1 person forced out alone at the center. You need a pretty big room for this, and by the way I have photos of the room this took place in. And, I use the word forced, because many of the clients were court ordered to this treatment center, and if staff reported them as being out of line or unfit for release, they could be sent to prison. Bottom line is, no one could refuse anything. You were forced to particiate in any activity, and that most definitely included Steel on Steel. Someone says it's time for Steel on Steel, and once the stage is set - lights and all that as you guys like to say - the next step of the ritual is for the other 29 clients, and any staff members present, to come up with the most cutting remark that they can, about the person sitting in the middle of the circle, in order to completely break that person down, because that person is entitled and delusional - so say the staff. The idea of Steel on Steel is for 30 patients, who have just come off the street, to somehow fix each other with "constructive" criticism, in this way. So: the one client is forced into the center of the room, is not allowed to speak, may not cross their arms, must sit upright, and may not respond for 24 hours afterwards - this client will sit in silence, and they will make eye contact with every client, and every staff member, as they are read these shaming remarks, one by one. And that's Steel on Steel. Mark Houston's proud legacy - a group attack on someone at rock bottom. The idea is to break you, as Mark said. AA people like quotes: "Give a small boy a hammer, and he will find that everything he encounters needs pounding." And who did Mark love swinging that hammer with. But you still have it on the website, like it's some sort of refined art, to gang up and bully and shame people, who have functionally become your prisoners, are completely at your mercy. Really interesting stuff. That was the carrot Mark Houston and others loved to hold over every starving person's head: "Don't like what I say? You are here because you did XYZ, but you have the nerve to question my methods? I'm Big Time Sobriety. Better start taking notes, or you can have fun in prison when we give you a bad report" - and he used the same tactic, to convince families to keep their loved ones locked away for more time. "They aren't ready. Need a 4th month." Here's another interesting thought: every single client is initially recommended 3 months in treatment. For these 3 months, staff plays like they are thinking about each individual the whole time - but then somehow, by some miracle, every. single. client. Is recommended a 4th month, and it's the same price as the others; EXCEPT, the clients who they already know will not be able to afford a 4th month, never seem to need one. Every. Time. It's just amazing. And as any reasonable person would imagine: no one will believe a client's word over Staff, especially a client who was court ordered, which very many are. There will never be any winning for you, while in treatment, over the wise words, circular arguments, and many years of 'Sobriety' claimed by staff. I started drinking as a child at 10, then as often as possible through 12 and 13, substances later, I spent 15 years around AA, eventually staying sober for 10. I also went here. How many of you people, who leave 5 star reviews for this place, because "you've been referring people a long time", can say any of that. Where are all the 20-year sobers. In a 90-year old program. Don't kid yourselves. I will not stand to be disrespected by anyone from this place again. read more

I read the good and bad reviews- I stayed for 28days trauma intensive program, through BRC trauma program at Makana path.You will truly get in what you put into the program - that means I saw people disrespect themselves, waste money, skip modules, meetings, and say they want to continue bad actions. I used my 12 steps in all I did daily, with therapists, with counselors, with the RA's with the nurses. If you do not use the 12 steps given how do you expect the staff to treat you how you want to be treated and respect your boundaries. Actions & more actions! Faith without works is dead. 2 weeks after I graduated I was asked to be multiple peoples sponsor. I went through BRC to overcome my addictions. I spent a month at Makana (detox program) and 4 months at Spearhead (for men 18-30 year olds). Looking back, I'm just so happy I did it. Spearhead humbled me and provided the therapy and supportive community I needed. I'm now over a year and a half sober, and I love the way I'm living MUCH more than how I used to live. Do not send your son here!!!! They tell you it's a 90 day program then at 70-75 days they tell you he needs another 30 days. Ask parents who sent their son here. The Sober Living house is in the worst part of Austin. Your son can buy any drug he wants at the bus stop . The relapse rate is over 70 %. Little or no management at the house. My son's property was ransacked and stolen while he was at work. Ask other parents who sent their son there. Constant turnover of staff. BRC is now owned by Private Equity. Horrible!!! read more

I agree with those who have started their reviews with the words, "BEWARE!" I sent a loved one there who has since used the words "militant," "abusive," "degrading," etc. This place TEARS DOWN their clients by humiliating them in the "fire circle" and provides no sense of privacy or respect. Even the weekly phone calls are monitored (someone literally sits in the room to monitor your loved ones phone calls). Clients are mentally abused and beaten down/shamed and told to take responsibility for everything in their past...including rape. In my loved ones case, e.g., because she did not coerce a fellow colleague to take responsibility for being raped, my loved one was punished by BRC. My loved one and another client (who became her friend) had similar episodes. You are also coerced to pay for a "fourth month" which is, frankly, just a scam as it adds nothing to the care. Vickie Bing promised that my loved one would get a job in her fourth month...that did not happen. Vickie was threatening to my loved one. Doug Hauck, who was supposed to monitor situations in their sober living homes, did not know details about my loved one and was incredibly rude and dismissive...and not at all helpful. DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONES TO THIS FACILITY. IT IS ABUSIVE TO THE CLIENTS. read more

A negligent care center. I was there in 2013, in my first week I severely injured my back during a workout, they refused to let me see a doctor or acknowledge my injury for over 2 months. I had a severely herniated disc and 6 bulging discs. It took 2 surgeries and years of physical rehab to finally get my back to a point where I can walk, during my time there the staff said there was no one to drive me to a doctor and I could meditate the pain away, they won't let you leave, they won't give your money back, it's too far to walk away, so in the event of a severe injury you're at the mercy of the staff who may completely ignore you and say you're faking. The program BRC provides is what I believe saved my life. I walked through those doors a very broken and lost person; I left with a sense of purpose and a set of tools to live a better life. Everyone working there has been through the 12 Steps and are usually more than willing to help the residents with their step work. The program directors really understand what the clients need and always make sure everyone understands they have a chance for a happier life in sobriety. I also had a strained relationship with my parents prior to BRC and with the help of their Segue team, my relationship with my family has never been better. The short and sweet of it is that this place saved my life. As I write this I am coming up on 4 years of sobriety after attending this treatment center for 4 months. Their staff is the most devoted and caring group of individuals you will ever encounter and it is truly their gifts that make this place what it is. I have been to handful of other treatment centers before but none teach what it takes to maintain long term sobriety quite like here. I'll also say that upon graduating, I was enrolled in their sober living and sober coaching program, without which I might have been lost. Recovery is not easy and early on it can feel quite foreign and strange. Without a doubt, the BRC Family of Programs is what prepared me to take on a new life and a new outlook. Absolute horror. Like most rehabs the front office is top heavy with five senior executives with fat salaries. The workers that carry the load are in recovery themselves and while that's a good thing, you shouldn't advertise yourself as a facility that treats dual diagnosis without enough clinicians. They are Blue Book based and line a boot camp for Jesus. Our Jewish daughter was often told to "let Jesus in.." our daughter suffered from ptsd and three weeks in two women tried to kill themselves on the same day. One was successful. Our daughter was removed for a weekend to a different treatment centre in an attempt to calm her down. Information from them was almost nil and when asked for details about how these women could have been in a position to commit suicide we were told it was a privacy issue. They ultimately transferred our daughter to Creative Care in Malibu which actually was a great centre with competent staff and on-site psychiatrist. Stay away from BRC. read more

Benchmark Recovery Center (BRC Recovery) (https://www.benchmarkcenter.com/) in Manor, Texas, (near Austin) helped our family immeasurably. When we found Benchmark, we liked it because it didn't feel clinical, like the centers we had dealt with a few years earlier. With those, we did not feel as though we were part of the program - they operated independently of us, which we believe made them less effective. Although I think an alcoholic or addict needs to be ready to do the work necessary for recovery, after seeing the transformation in our son's life during his time at BRC Recovery, we believe wholeheartedly in their mission. We also heard one AA speaker say that BRC Recovery is the only recovery center she supports because of its success compared to other centers. BRC Recovery uses a three-tiered approach to treatment and they work with people seeking help for the first time and with chronic relapsers. First is the residential treatment center; second, when residents graduate, they move to sober living apartments. The third tier, the Segue program, is optional. Those enrolled in the 12-month Segue program are assigned a recovery coach who follows up with them on a weekly basis and helps them acclimate to living life on its terms. The goal for each person in recovery is to live life sober and unsupervised. The staff at BRC Recovery has a genuine concern for the clients. We felt it was a true partnership, because we were included in the decision-making process at every step. There were a couple of times when the case manager made a decision/recommendation that we were not comfortable with, and after we let him know our reservations and the reasons for them, he changed his recommendation. The weekly calls with the case manager were extremely helpful and were a great way to keep us informed and connected with the process. The case manager was great to work with. He was very patient and went out of his way to make sure he had time to answer all our questions during our weekly calls. He also did a great job of helping our son during his stay and of helping us begin our recovery too, because we were classic codependent enablers. He was the buffer and family recovery coach that we so desperately needed, and he helped us realize that we had to change some of our ideas and behaviors too. We had to laugh one time when we were on vacation, and our son told us on our weekly call that he needed cigarettes. We made a plan to buy them at a corner grocery store and find a place to ship them. And then we got the case manager's email: "Do not worry about the cigarettes. Your son knew you were going out of town, so if he runs out of cigarettes, he can learn his lesson and plan ahead in the future. I suspect that an old behavior for you both would be to race out to bring cigarettes to your son at your first opportunity, even if it is inconvenient to you. Remember, his recovery will not be hurt in the slightest if you do not get him cigarettes on his timetable. I would suggest waiting until it is convenient for you to bring out cigarettes." We read that and burst out laughing - that was exactly what we were going to do! The Segue recovery coach was great too, and continued to help us with our own recovery from codependency. Our son did not have a car for a while, and when we were worried about him walking to the sober living apartments in heavy rain, we asked the recovery coach if we should contact our son to see if he needed a ride. We were told to let him have his own experience. That was great advice, and sure enough, our son worked it out. We know that the staff at BRC Recovery has done their best to work with our son and to teach him the skills and give him the tools he needs to stay in recovery. They've helped all of us to learn healthier behaviors and ways of interacting, and we are enjoying rebuilding our relationship with a basis of honesty and trust that we have never experienced before. Working our recovery program has been the most difficult and most rewarding work we've ever done. We're also learning to live by some of the sayings they use: "trust the process," "everything happens for a reason," "it was meant to be," and "progress, not perfection." At first, they sounded trite, but now we understand the power in those statements. We're so grateful we found Benchmark!
