My experience with this place great. I don't understand why it is low rated but after reading the reviews I see the most complaints because of their customer service but the cake and their pastries are beyond amazing. My family and I just moved to Camarillo and we found out go to place for cakes, this is amazing. I hope they stay in business throughout this pandemic. I went in a couple times since we moved here and they safely practice social distancing, wear masks and when I ordered my cake they helped me and payed attention to details. When I picked up the cake, they provided help by bringing the cake to my car. All my guests were satisfied with their cake and cupcakes! For the cakes I'll rate it five stars. I take off two stars for the supervisors and/or management. There is no good "vibes" here and workers are unhappy or not overly friendly and this is because of management. I've witnessed how one of the supervisors talks to the workers and I almost wanted to say something. You can't have good customer service if workers aren't treated right. You don't talk down to an employee in front of customers! Unprofessional and wrong. You can train and give tips to employees but there is a wrong way and a right way to do it! I come here for the Christmas Petit fours. Which they don't make in house. They get from somewhere else (I'm not sure where). They are fantastic. I bought a couple of cookies too and they were fine, but nothing that would prompt me to return. Service was good. Prices seem on the high end to me. Paul and his super crew made the most amazing James Bond Birthday cake for us. He's super friendly and helpful over the phone. NO MORE DELI?! I've been going to Bread Basket 20 years. I don't eat a lot of sweets and I don't like cake usually, but I went in to buy one for my daughter's birthday because she loves baking cake so a grocery store cake wouldn't do. It was WAY TOO EXPENSIVE but I tried a slice and thought it was delicious!! They have awesome pastries as well so I don't mind paying extra for those but the cakes were excessively priced imo. They USED to have some amazing sandwiches too! I would definitely pay $15-$20 on them for lunch but they stopped that service :( which makes it hard for me to go in for a pastry or overpriced party cake, like I used to. Honest review. For years we have loved the fruit basket cake vanilla with french whip. Last few times it has been disappointing, not to mention their awful customer service over the phone. On to the cake review. The decorative strawberries were in good shape however the strawberries on the inside of the cake were disintegrated disgusting. Bread was good. The cream was tasteless it reminded me and my guests of sour cream. This bakery is particularly expensive, our cake was close to $70 which wouldn't have mattered if it was as delicious as we remembered it. I would have called the bakery, but didn't feel like dealing with the person on the phone. I would have also felt ridiculous bringing them half a cake after we gave everyone their slice. I've been a customer of the Bread Basket Bakery for almost 40 years, but unfortunately that had to end yesterday. I moved out of town a while ago, but have plenty of family and friends that I've recommended this bakery to that have purchased cakes here based on my recommendations. I've ordered cakes, pastries, and breads for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, holidays, and the list goes on and on, for several decades. Yesterday, on Christmas Eve, I strolled into town for a visit, and decided to stop at the bread basket for coffee and dessert. After a long stare-down was given to my 21-year old daughter by the four young female workers behind the counter, we placed our order for coffee, cake, cookies, and a can of doggie cookies. I asked if they had a small to-go container that I could offer my pup a drink of water, and the four girls all looked at each other, laughed, then one said, "NO!" I was surprised to say the least, especially since I had purchased the doggie cookies. I walked outside and sat down at one of their tables and opened my box of cake, and discovered that she had given me the wrong cake, so I walked it back inside to be exchanged. They all seemed very inconvenienced and told me that I would need to walk the wrong piece outside to dispose of it in their outdoor trash. I asked, don't you have a garbage to throw it away? She said, "NO!", you have to throw it away outside! The manager came out front about that time so I asked her if she was the manager or the owner... I asked her if it's her policy that they do not offer water to their patrons who purchase, and she said, well, no. I explained to her what had happened and told her about the very poor service and attitudes I received from the four employees, and she just shrugged her shoulder's. I could accept the policy if that was truly their policy, but it was the attitudes that I can't accept. She gave me a cup of water for my dog, but I told her that unfortunately I will not be referring this business to my friends or family anymore, and I will personally never return. It's my understanding that Whole Foods has an outstanding bakery that offers better tasting cakes, and definitely offers better service... that's where I'll be doing my future business. And by the way - the service was so bad that I almost forgot to mention that the cake was very flavorless, had way too much cream in the middle, and barely any fruit at all... yuk! I have fell in love with bread basket cakes since 2003. I have been coming to this bakery for years despite the increase in their prices. I loved this place! Every year I would get everyone a cake from here. Recently I'm not sure if they changed the way they make their cakes but it is completely different than before. The cakes used to be moist and yummy but now they just kinda fall apart when cutting into it. They are very dry and crumbly. Not to mention before these were the perfect cakes not to sweet not to bland they were perfect now it's way to sweet and just not the same. Before the cakes would be gone within seconds and people would get seconds and recently it doesn't get eaten and gets thrown out! I have bought cakes from the Bread Basket for years. I heard they have new owners now, but I assumed the quality of their cakes would be the same as it has always been. I ordered a chocolate custom cake for my son's graduation last weekend. It cost $350. When the party started and we cut into the cake, we realized it was white cake. Furthermore, the fondant covering was super thick, totally separated from the cake, and the cake itself fell apart once it was cut. Many of our 50 guests were shocked that it was a Bread Basket cake. I contacted the bakery for a refund for the disaster and was only refunded $200. So incredibly disappointing. Sadly, I will not ever order another Bread Basket cake again. read more

I'm not sure there is a bakery more famous in Ventura County than The Bread Basket. To say that they are a bakery, in the strictest sense, is not accurate. The bread basket provides so much more than most bakeries. They offer specialty condiments, sauces, spices, ingredients, mixes, etc to the extent that I can imagine someone visiting to purchase those products instead of their cakes or pastries. Also, they sell coffee, tea and of course cupcakes, which is the primary reason for my visit. I was told by numerous friends that they sold a delicious red velvet cupcake, which was the primary reason for my visit. There is no indoor seating but plenty of tables and chairs outdoors. As far as their red velvet cake, they are huge! ($4.50) Imagine the size of a muffin that you'd buy at any doughnut shop or supermarket, that's how big they are. Topped with frosting as well as fruit, the cupcake itself is a visual delight. With regard to the cake portion of the cupcake, it's moist and springy like you'd expect from a well made cake. However, it didn't taste like other red velvet cakes that I've sampled. That's not to say that it was bad, because it wasn't but there was something missing and I can't quite figure it out. I'm not sure they use a traditional recipe. The Bread Basket does something interesting with their frosting. First there is a small dollop of cream cheese frosting and topped (additionally) with whipped cream, which is top by fruit. A little different, this makes the cupcake look ever bigger. It's an artistic touch but adds nothing in the way of sweetness Their cupcakes are some of the least sweet of any cupcakes I've ever sampled, once again, not bad just different. Their attendants provided wonderful service and answered my many questions including verifying that they make everything in house. I'm looking forward to returning so that I can sample and purchase a slice of one of their cakes as well as their many condiments, sauces and mixes. read more

What a sad bakery now.. We used to rave over this company for years. They did my family and our family's wedding cakes. We referred them to every friend of ours and only bought cakes from here for all birthdays. We had heard the downfall of the cakes here and purchased a cake just three months ago just to see, let me tell you it was true. We have been using Whole Foods now which is way way better. Unfortunately, Whole Foods has horrible carrot cake so we decided to give Bread Basket another try for my birthday. Below are the pictures of the carrot cake. It literal had two small layers of carrot cake probably an inch thick, the inside had at least three inches of vanilla moose and the outside was three inches of cream cheese frosting. Everyone pieced apart the cake and ate the two tiny pieces of cake and left all the rest of moose and cream cheese. Very sad for a $70 cake and 3/4 of it was not edible. I have never seen a cake that doesn't have cake. I do have hope that the bad reviews change this companies trajectory so we can start using them again.
