8-2-25 We were in the store and looking at the running shoes. My spouse loves shopping for new running shoes for work. There were three to four workers at the front counter talking. A couple of other customers rooming around the store. There was not a single worker step up to greet anyone. All they acknowledged was welcome and please let us know if you need anything. I was in dire need of some good running shoes and instantly thought of Breakaway in Midtown. Alex, Happy and Barry were all AMAZING in helping me find the perfect shoe to fit my needs. I will say I was not thrilled at the "Grape" colored shoe but after a bit of prancing around the store and wanting a BOLD look during my runs the Grape started to wear on me. Alex asked the right questions, measured both feet, watched my gait to and fro and Viola he made a suggestion. Happy, yes, that's her legal name chimed in with more great questions and advice in which she felt the shoes looked "Graped" =Great, get it? Any way there we just that great and Grape. I needed to try another size as a benchmark and they ordered, took my information and they arrived on Monday. Barry sent a text and helped right away once I arrived at the store. Long story short. Breakaway Running is an awesome place for runners! Great inventory of shoes, clothing, and many other running accessories. Breakaway is a group of friendly and helpful running advocates, not just staff, and are defintely a big part of the community. These guys been around for decades and from what I hear and have hosted runs around midtown since the 90s, maybe even before. I often run with these guys on Thursday nights at 6PM for their Tour De Midtown run. It's a brief 3-4 mile run around the Overton Park and Evergreen community. Plently of people to run with and all with varying levels of running experience. While shopping for my latest pair of running shoes at Breakaway, I was given a thorough consultation and recommendations on shoes (I'm an overpronator). I felt bad for the lady who helped me because she brought out a boatload of shoes to try. However, it's all a part of the process to find the right shoe. I tried on and ran around the store several times before finding the Hoka Arahi 5s - pretty happy with them so far! Grateful for having been introduced to Breakaway Running and I am excited to continue my relationship with them! read more

Unless you ran track in school or you're just THAT into running, then you're probably like me -- a long history of going into stores like Sports Authority or Academy and picking a fancy pair of Nikes which boast high performance, that are also coincidentally your favorite color. (Nevermind the equally as long history of discomfort when running/walking for long periods.) I began running irregularly a year and a half ago. I just recently became involved in the local races this year, and am finding myself doing more and more. (Every other day usually). After running my last 5k, I figured it might be time to get serious about my footwear. Today I walked into Breakaway with no clue what to buy. I've never known my foot type -- I mean I couldn't tell you anything about my arch, or where I need support. But I sat down with Barry (the owner) and we discussed my running habits, how my legs handle it all, the shoes I typically wear, and more. He had me walk around the store so he could observe where I put most of my weight, and we even went outside so he could see how I run. He then gave me several pairs of shoes to try on to run around outside. We found the best pair for me! I also learned about the group runs. Barry and his staff were very welcoming from the start to the end of my visit, and I look forward to my relationship with Breakaway & the Memphis running community! read more

I've only been in Memphis for a year but I've seen that Breakaway Running is hard to define as just a "business" because they seem more like a community that everyone can be a part of. If you've been in Memphis for more than a day I'd bet that you've seen runners wearing a Breakaway top. Everyone who works here is super helpful and knows their stuff. Breakaway organizes training groups multiple times a week for those who are trying to prepare for a marathon/half marathon, all with water along the way, and they do it out of the goodness of their hearts. I'm not the most experienced runner, but I decided it was time that I got my first real pair of running shoes. I was intimidated walking in, but that feeling was gone immediately. The lady that helped me find my perfect pair was so knowledgeable, patient and kind. I told her what I needed and she brought me out ten different pairs to try, while keeping my specific shoe needs in mind. I have known about the Breakaway guys for a few years and had decided I'd get my next pair of shoes from them - because of how much they do for the community in terms of their free training runs. They're such a great small business because of how much they give back, and how well they treat their employees (who, I found out all have full health insurance benefits). All of the Breakaway employees have advanced training (in many cases, advanced degrees) and are the absolute best in helping you determine the best shoe and the right fit. My only regret was that I waited so long wearing an oversized shoe for designed someone much bigger than me. Barry, the owner, personally helped me select the right shoe. I am trying to get into running but wear my shoes mainly for walking. Even if you want comfortable walking shoes, Breakaway is the place! FYI - they have the absolute softest, most comfortable t-shirts, and all the running gear you need in one location. read more

You can not beat the staff at Breakaway. They are knowledgeable and patient. They sincerely want your running experience to be the best it can be. Once feature I enjoy about shopping at Breakaway is that they keep track of all your purchase so it is easy to reorder shoes. They have great events and are always out in the running community. The staff was super friendly and helpful for the most part. My overall experience from a customer service standpoint was fantastic, but I want to speak on their return/exchange policy. They allow you to swap out your shoes for another pair if for whatever reason they don't work for you - I thought this was great because I have never purchased a pair of running shoes and let them guide me through the entire process. My first pair didn't provide me with the grip I felt was necessary for the routine I have been doing for years so I swapped them out for a pair of Brooks. The Brooks were nice, but the tongue split within the first few days so I had to take them back again - that's not something I expect fro a $150 pair of shoes. Unfortunately, they didn't have the same pair in stock and were having a hard time getting Brooks shipments in (totally not their fault), but how does that help me? I ended up getting another pair that I wasn't particularly sold on to begin with and I felt like I was settling and at that point so I really just wanted a refund, but their policy insinuated that there wasn't a return policy, rather just the exchange policy. I ended up just putting the shoes back in the box after a couple of wears and finding they were extremely uncomfortable. I ended up calling the store to discuss a return because I felt that it was worth a shot and I did spend a good bit of money on a pair of shoes that didn't work for me. The manager was friendly and apologetic, but wasn't willing to help because it was outside of the thirty day window. I somewhat understand, but it was documented that I clearly exchanged them twice within that window and I felt that it was possible to have accommodated my request for a refund considering they didn't have the pair of shoes that I wanted in stock due to the distributor. I guess it happens, but I did have an overall pleasant experience and would consider going back if Fleet Feet doesn't come through. read more

I have only recently hopped on the Breakaway bandwagon, but I'm a huge fan. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable about both the products sold in the store and also with running in general. I would say that it is THE place in town to get plugged into a running group. You can pretty much find people running every night after the store closes - either in Germantown or in Midtown. Post-run the store stays open with beer and other goodies. Their marathon training runs are a lifesaver those of us crazies - they have prearranged routes with water stops and everything. He was very patient and answered all of our questions. All the other employee were not as friendly. While Cameron was helping my hubby, I browsed the store. Clearly this place is a runners paradise! They sell plenty shoes, accessories and clothes! Some of the employees are very knowledgeable too! I went in looking for those god watches and they had some on sale. Breakaway seems like a community meetup spot for runners too bc I always pass by there and see people mingling. I'm no runner but if I was this would be my go to spot. I have even seen people trying on shoes and being allowed to take a jog like a foot or two. That's great service right there!! read more

I have been to a lot of running stores across the country. This one hands down wins for 2 reasons: 1) best branded apparel, and 2) its collection of nostalgic running items from past great runners and past famous races. I discovered Breakaway Running by chance. I was getting ready to train for the St. Jude Half Marathon in 2015 and came across their Facebook page. Best discovery ever! Barry Roberson is a gift to the running community. The staff at Breakaway is very knowledgeable and will not sell you items you don't need or won't work for you. This is no cookie cutter store. I have several foot issues and the staff helped me pick from several different types of shoes that would work. They watched me not only walk in them but run in them. When I didn't like the latest version of the shoe I had been running in Chris was able to find me an alternative that turned out to be a great choice. Barry and his crew support the efforts of St. Jude by holding FREE training sessions for the runners-10K, half, and full marathon. They map out a course every Saturday and have multiple water stops. Barry patrols the course to make sure no one is left behind. I'm talking EVERY Saturday for 6 months. And the staff is out on the course on race day supporting the runners. There are various group runs from both stores. They have groups for all levels-again-no one left behind. Barry has also organized runs and fundraisers for the families of several police officers that were killed in the line of duty. I've recommended Breakaway to several non-running friends that have foot issues and were struggling to find shoes to work for them. Breakaway not only helped all of them but even custom ordered a pair for HOKAS for a friend that they did not have in stock. read more

A few years ago I was a fairly regular runner, but lately my running could be described as...sporadic. With the advent of a new year, I've decided it's time to make running a priority in my life again, and my ancient shoes weren't going to cut it. So I made my first trip to Breakaway this morning. I was a little intimidated and wasn't 100% sure what I was looking for- my shoes had been fine, but I figured there was probably a better option. Anyway, I simply explained the above and they were incredibly helpful and patient. They started with looking at my old shoes and watching how I walked and explained why a different type of shoe would be better. They brought me several pairs to try on, even letting me run in them outside a bit, and helped me find my perfect pair. It was a great experience and I can't wait to join in some of their group runs once I build up a little distance again. read more

I have been jogging for about a year now and I love the staff at Breakaway. They have been so great in helping me get the right shoes and encouraging me to join their running groups. The store has a great selection of shoes and I love their tanks really cool designs and not too expensive. If you are looking for a running group they have one at least once a week just call the store for exact days because it does change from time to time; they also offer training sessions for the St. Jude Marathon.
