I'm disappointed with my experience…read more On the 12th, I called specifically to confirm pricing and scheduling before committing because I value both my time and the business's time. During that call, I was told there was a 4-week introductory program for $149, with classes on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8:00 PM. I was also told that after the introductory period, membership would be $257 per month, with a discounted rate available if I signed up early. Based on that information, I was excited to get started. I confirmed my email, completed the registration process, signed the waiver, and booked what was advertised on the website as a free trial. When I arrived for class, I was informed that free trials were no longer offered and that the $149 introductory program was no longer available. This was surprising given that only about 10 days had passed since I had called to confirm everything. I asked whether I could simply pay for a drop-in fundamentals class since I was already there and on time, but I was told that drop-ins were only available to students with prior experience. As a brand-new student, my only option was to sign up for the full $257 monthly membership. That was the most frustrating part. The lower-cost introductory option was gone, the free trial was gone, and I wasn't allowed to pay for a single class to see if the gym was a good fit. Instead, the only option available was to commit to a full month for $257 without ever having taken a class there. That's a significant commitment for someone trying a new gym for the first time. It's unfortunate because the facility seems to have a great community and many satisfied members. However, having the terms change so quickly after I confirmed them, combined with having no way to try a class before committing to a full membership, left me with a very negative first impression.

At first I thought people were confusing me with someone else, but I quickly realized that's just the culture here. I started with their 4-week beginner program and had a really positive experience. The professors are not only friendly and approachable, but also world-class. They pay close attention to everyone to make sure you feel comfortable and are learning the techniques correctly. Starting BJJ can feel intimidating, but they've created a safe and supportive environment that makes it much easier to stay consistent. That's important for a sport like this where progress takes time. What initially drew me in was Cobrinha's philosophy, and it absolutely lives up to the reputation. I'd encourage anyone to learn about it directly from him. I've been meaning to write this for a while, but I'm proud to be a member here now. This is a great place to start your BJJ journey.

He's patient, methodical, and SO insightful. When this guy isn't doing jiu jitsu or teaching it, he's probably studying it during his break time, which shows how passionate he is at making sure his students are getting the best, most effective instruction possible. In addition to Anthony, the other owners, Coach Nate and Professor Scott, are one of the best, funniest, and most genuine people I've ever met! I've watched them establish this gym from the ground up and because of the positive energy they radiate, they've built the most amazing jiu jitsu community! The environment here is like no other and is filled with people who are ambitious, friendly, and incredibly amazing at what they do. A HUGE shout out to the women who train here. If you're a girl and have been contemplating joining/trying jiu jitsu, I promise they are probably the BEST group of women to train with. Can confirm that they are the nicest and most badass girls I've ever met. Everyone takes care of each other here and truly embodies a safe and welcoming place no matter what level you are. Thank you for everything, KATA! PS If you're lucky, you might get to meet the gym pup, Mochi. 10/10 fav place

Martin is, by far, the best Systema instructor outside of Systema HQ in Toronto. However, I walked away from the academy. Some of the students(including one who ran for governor during the recall election for ca. governor, and "informed" me that Gavin Newsom was a pedophile).bought into RW talking points and Covid misinformation, and I frankly felt uncomfortable, especially as a Black Man. I would've left it there and said nothing. However, after tweeting about my experience(without naming Martin or the academy), I was approached by one of their senior students/instructors while I was out working. How he found me, I don't know. but it wasn't happenstance. Although there was no direct threat made, it was certainly implied. It's especially galling because I was a long-time student here. But, I guess those on the "right" feel they can intimidate anyone now, for any reason. In any case, I'm training a different martial art now, no worries. But I'll never touch Systema again.
