Traveling through Cedar Rapids, we stopped at The Breakfast House for a quick bite before heading out of town. Tucked into an unassuming strip mall, it was easy to miss from the outside, but inside it had all the charm of a classic hometown diner. Since it was early on a Friday morning, we were seated right away with no wait. Our server was cheerful, attentive, and made us feel right at home. The menu had all the diner staples you would expect, and we decided to kick things off by sharing a cinnamon roll. It came out warm with a generous layer of cream cheese frosting. A solid start to the day. I went with the Corned Beef Hash combo, which came with two eggs, hashbrowns, and the option to substitute toast for a pancake for $1.99. Easy choice. I don't drink coffee, so Diet Pepsi was my morning fuel. Yep, it is another Pepsi establishment. My vegetarian sidekick ordered a veggie omelet without onions, but when the food arrived, hot and fresh, she discovered onions had snuck in. It was no big deal. They were very apologetic and had a corrected version out quickly. We shared my pancake while we waited, which kept everyone happy. All in all, this spot delivered exactly what we needed. My second time to enjoy this Gem, only been to Iowa twice from Texas and twice I have enjoyed the Breakfast House. I have had some wonderful meals while here, however, breakfast here is without a doubt the best!!! I will always make the trip to this location if within a Hundred miles gladly. My girlfriend and I ordered the chicken fried steak with sausage gravy. We both made pleasing sounds as we took our first bite. It was so delicious. The wait staff there are fast and furious, as well as attentive and very friendly. They take care of a lot of customers but no one goes without. We arrived around 11:30 and we'd seared right away. The place was still full and I imagine there'd might be a bit of a wait during peak breakfast hours. A great mix of folks from couples, families, and just friends taking a meal together. I absolutely loved this mom and pop style Breakfast House Cafe. I took my family here when they were visiting town. We were helped and seated by a very friendly waitress when we walked in and she continued to help us throughout our stay for breakfast. The whole place was pretty clean as well as busy. From what I noticed, there was one waitress and 5 cooks on duty. They all provided us with excellent service. We ordered our food relatively quickly after getting our drinks served to us. She warned us that the pancakes were gigantic (the size of the large plate)...and they sure were huge pancakes. My food came perfectly as ordered special for my dietary needs. Good traditional diner food with friendly service. On this late Saturday morning, the wait was 30 minutes so we patiently waited in the car and received a called when our table was ready. We were served coffee right away and given menus. Overall, the service and food were good, nicely flavored and well presented. My omelette was well prepared and the hash browns were crispy on the outside while soft on the inside while the buttered rye toast was thick and fresh. Why four stars? The wait. The wait was a bit long after we placed our order. I would assume it has to do with the increased takeout orders taking priority during these unprecedented times of COVID-19 (China virus). They also offer vanilla and berry granola yogurt parfaits as a potato alternative. They use fresh berries too! Dropped into this place after we hungrily scoured Yelp for somewhere to eat. We were starving, but didn't want to spend a ton and definitely wanted breakfast food. Long story short: we'd go back and try different things, but it's not much different than any other diner. The building is older, but recently remodeled. A sign on the window advertises "under new management" and "free coffee Monday- Wednesday 6-8am". The inside is clean and modest. Like others have mentioned, there is an open kitchen. It was busier than I would've expected for a Wednesday morning. Maybe they were understaffed, but the service wasn't great. We weren't well attended throughout the meal despite the place being so small. The food itself was pretty good. It's worth mentioning - there is only one person working the kitchen. My boyfriend got the scrambler meal - 2 chocolate chip pancakes, 4 sausage links, and scrambled eggs. I ordered the cowboy omelette (ham, onion, green pepper, Swiss cheese) with rye toast and fruit. Everything was tasty and the portions were very generous, however I had to stop eating the omelette because it seemed undercooked. We are from California and had flown into Cedar Rapids. In trying to find a decent place to get breakfast, I used Yelp and came across The Breakfast House. What an AMAZING find!!! There were 6 of us and everyone enjoyed their meals. I had the Stuffed French Toast with Strawberries with Eggs.... oh my gosh, the cream cheese inside the Toast is DELICIOUS!!! My husband had an omelet and my son had the biscuits and gravy. They really liked their food as well. Everything tastes great and you get good portions. Aside from the food, the service was great. They had a full-house and continuously checked on us, making sure our coffee cups never got empty. You truly receive good service with a smile! My gf and I have started going here on Sunday mornings for breakfast. This is the 4th time we have gone. The food is really good and the staff is nice. The pancakes are as big as plates and very filling. My only complaint if you can call it that is that sometimes no booths or tables are available so you have to wait for one. The stuffed French toast was recommended by the waitress and it was a good choice! You should totally order two because you'll eat it all before you can blink once. The fruit is fresh, not a sauce like I anticipated. It keeps the sweetness from being overwhelming. The pancakes are fluffy and have way more flavor than I expected. Huge! Way bigger than the French toast. I also got the Monster Skillet with over-easy eggs and it was to-die for. I could eat that every day. It's hangover cure food for sure. Just the right amount of grease and potato. The hash browns are crispy, eggs were cooked perfectly, and the meats mixed in the skillet were cut small so it all mixed together in a balanced bite every time.
