Visiting from Cali and I'm a big foodie! Walking in you're welcomed by old skool diner vibes and decor. Service was good, plates were well portioned! Pretty much ate the whole thing. Only thing I will comment on is that I expected fresh guacamole (like a chunky guac) on my plate. It looked like it was squeezed out of a bottle. Vegan Just Egg, Beyond Sausage, Biolife cheese and vegan waffles can transform majority of menu items to a vegan friendly meal. My husband ordered a regular menu item and asked to have the omelette made with Just Egg and switch the meat with Beyond sausage. This along with hashbrowns and English muffins made a perfect American breakfast without hurting any animals. If I could add one thing to the food here, it would be addition of lattes or a better selection of coffee. The coffee served here is the standard drip coffee that you'd expect at any diner. A friendly waitress walks around the restaurant asking guests if she could top off their coffee cup. The interiors and decor is exactly what it was like when the place was Riley's cafe. The quirky signs on the walls remain. The furniture is the same even the window treatments are the same as they were at Riley's. I wonder if the new owner wanted to keep the iconic charm that was a part of Cedar Rapids for a long long time. So all in all, this place is everything you'd expect from a Midwest Diner, with an added benefit of being able to eat vegan friendly food. read more

I have eaten here 3 times and I have yet to be disappointed. The chicken fried steak seems homemade and was great! I haven't tried the cinnamon French toast yet but I have had the regular French toast and it is hand battered none of that nasty frozen stuff here. Keep it up! I love your specials also (I had the chicken fried steak dinner). Good service also. I'm going to hate when the word gets out and this place gets packed but I guess it eventually will. read more

I decided to stop by Cruz's Cafe for breakfast. Immediately after I sat myself, a very sweet waitress came to take my order for drinks and then came back with the drinks and took my order (since I was ready). I ordered an Egg White Chicken and Goat Cheese Omelette with spinach instead of roasted red peppers and with an English muffin and Black Beans. For drinks, I ordered: an orange juice, an ice water, and a coffee. Everything tasted good. The only thing was I had never tried chicken in an omelette before, and it was different. My weekly lunch group and I were looking for new diners in the area and we stumbled upon Cruz's Cafe. Acting as an almost replacement for the now defunct Riley's Cafe here in town -- Cruz's offers a familiar atmosphere and menu. Warming and inviting -- the walls are filled with old local street signs and automobile signage. Like the decor, the menu is also a spin-off of Riley's but updated and altered in all the right ways. Cruz's has added dishes like loaded cheesy waffle fries (which are fantastic, by the way) and an eggs benedict flight -- among others. Service at Cruz's was prompt and everyone we interacted with was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu which isn't always the case with newer restaurants. It felt like the timing of everything was just right. From the time you get seated, to getting drinks, to getting starters, entrees, and the checks... Everything from walking in to leaving had a great flow at Cruz's. The restaurant and the staff provide a feeling of being a well-oiled machine. The common pitfalls for new restaurants just weren't pitfalls at all for Cruz's. My group has now been to Cruz's multiple time and have tried a wide array of the menu -- from appetizers and soups to sandwiches and breakfast staples and we have yet to be disappointed. The people at and behind Cruz's are doing it the right way and deserve the patronage and support of this city. I look forward to being back soon. read more

A small setting, not a ton of seating, lots of food options and the food was good. We got a cheeseburger a d a side of mashed potatoes and a make your own omelet with fried potatoes. It had good flavor and portion size was plenty. Good prices as well. Definitely will go back. read more

I'm really sad because I really wanted to like this place. I give them grace because I know they were busy and probably backed up, but my husband and I waited 50 minutes for a sad meal. I ordered the Mardi Gras Benedict and I was envisioning a nice piece of chopped up sausage and jumbo shrimp with a delicious sauce on top of it with the Cajun seasoning, but it was super tiny pieces of meat and shrimp that I could count and barely any pepper. My husband got what looked like 1 scrambled egg and 2 pieces of bacon and French toast. For such a long wait we felt underwhelmed and sad. I don't know if we'll be back unfortunately. Im mostly frustrated because we sat for 50 mins and had zero communication. Our waitress didn't tell us what was going on, how long the wait would be, nothing. It's really disappointing.
