I'd been having some trouble finding an artist that I felt comfortable with to do a piece for me, but I'm glad that I was recommended CC! She is literally so sweet, makes great conversation and she really does have the lightest touch. So I decided to reach out and see if she would do a tattoo for me. She was so easy to work with. Listened to exactly what I was thinking and then accommodated in every possible way. S/o to my artist Trung for his amazing work and attention to detail! I reached out to Trung via Instagram after doing my own personal research on various Bay Area tattoo artists. I instantly knew just by looking through his photos that his style/technique/shading matched my vibe/preference. He was quick to respond and was able to set an appt about a month out from when I first contacted him and from there everything was smooth sailing. My experience was really calming; Trung is super chill and polite. You can tell that he truly cares.. not just about the work he puts in but that his client feels at ease. My orchid realism piece took 2 sessions in total and is about 7 inches in length for reference. Once I figure out the details for my next piece to my half sleeve I'll be sure to hit up Trung. I'd highly recommend Shawn. I get compliments from strangers all the time on Shawn's work. Of course I'm sure your friends' cousin can do it cheaper out of their "studio" in their garage - but remember, tattoos are on your skin for life so make the best investment you can and don't cheap out. I have done two full sleeves through him and have started the outline for my leg sleeve, with plans to get more work done through him. Shawn also did my girlfriend's forearm piece as well as many friends I have recommended to him throughout the years. His color work is phenomenal with layering/blending of colors, along with a light hand. Line work impeccable, ultra clean lines. He has worked really quickly as I can finish 95% to 100% of a sleeve outline in a session. When I have an idea, I bounce it off of him and he draws it out, it comes out better than I envision every time. As far as scheduling goes, it's pretty easy as I just call or text him and he lets me know his availability. I usually do 6-8 hours per session and they go by quick, since he has entertainment so you don't get bored. There's the TV or music of your choice to pass the time. I plan to get the rest of my body done through Shawn and would recommend at least scheduling a consultation if you have any hesitation. read more

I've been a tattoo enthusiast for almost 20 years, and have seen the progression of tattoos in the Bay Area. I have several tattoos from other artists already; however, I truly believe Shawn (Dung) is the best Asian inspired tattoo artist in the Bay--and probably even in California! What sets him apart is that he always strives to improve his skillset (hence the name Breaking Boundaries). All his apprentices need to have some sort of "professional" art background (art classes etc); and his reasoning is that you need to understand basic art concepts in order to be a good artist--and not just having a passion for it. Imagine getting inked by someone who only has experience from tattooing friends in a small garage vs someone who has taken painting/drawing classes. Big difference in skillset! I had an arm piece idea that had a long list of what I wanted--as it represented something meaningful to me. Shawn was able to work with the ideas thrown at him, and able to create the art, and it was better than I expected! He's also really nice and personable, and we had great talks while I was getting inked. I was very fortunate to have Mabel be the artist to do my first anime piece. She was super friendly, communicative, and accommodating before (in my conversation regarding my booking inquiry with her), during, and after the tattoo session. She made sure I was comfortable and to let her know if I needed to take a break at any time during the session. If I ever had to adjust my position for her to work, she politely asked. The studio itself was clean, well-lit, and adequately air-conditioned. Parking was easy to find in the surrounding neighborhoods where you don't have to worry about paying, or hourly parking limits and would only require a few blocks to walk to get to the studio which itself was very easy to find. Lastly, and most importantly I can't give enough praise for the quality of her craft. I absolutely love the piece I had done by her and her attention to detail is amazing. I have been booking an appointment with Mabel for the last six months. My brother introduced me to Mabel's Instagram page and once I saw her work, I knew I needed to get a tattoo done by her. Location is in a pretty hidden area in San Jose but it does provide easy access to parking. Shawn is the only person allowed to ink me. From day one he is one who believes each individual should have their own unique artwork. Meaning, your piece can be entirely unique if requested. Not only that, it is encouraged. Shawn has been inking me for over 10 years and his progression and accuracy has only improved with the years. His stroke is precise, fast, but light. He can and is able to do dark line work, never messy or generic, but also stencil or charcoal pencil light line work. More often than not, random individuals have come up to me to admire my piece and give praises on the quality of the line work as well as the art piece itself. The artwork on my skin was hand sketched over weeks time until it was ready to be placed on my skin. You really have to understand the quality of line work of an artist. That of which being hair follicle thin, straight, and if needed a fading gradient or light like stencil. It simply isn't just a tattoo, it is art and should be treated as so.
