The Breakwater Cove Marina was just a short walking distance from the Best Western Victorian Inn where we stayed for our week long vacation. And besides the main attraction at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, I really enjoyed taking our daily casual walks along the beaches and at the marina itself. There were many observation areas and rest stops along the way. I couldn't get enough at taking advantage of the photo opportunities whenever we could. If you are a nature lover like we are, you get to see a variety of wildlife going about their routines, hunting, eating, resting and sun bathing. And yes, sunbathing seems to be a favorite pastime for many of the marine mammals there! Much of the nature trails are in a park like setting where you can get panoramic views of the bay, the docks and pier. Their is plenty of shopping to be had, restaurants, museums, boating trips, and even scuba diving classes. In the tourist trap perspective, just about everything in this city is pricey from souvenirs to food, but one thing is for certain, you can't beat the free scenery! And that's a trap I don't mind returning to! read more

Breakwater Cove is the place many a scuba diver gets their open water certification. And I am one of the many. Get here EARLY if you want parking. The lots fill up fast, there always dives going on so expect to be sharing the water with a variety of different classes and skill levels. The water can sometimes get decent visibility, and don't be surprised or alarmed if a seal decides to go up to you for a visit. The wall has plenty to look at. Farther away from the buildings, there is the metridium fields. Huge cauliflower like creatures, and plenty of sea cucumbers (ugh). This place isn't as flooded with divers so you and your buddy might be the only ones out there. This is a truly standard and great place to get your scuba certifications. They do have a hot pay shower (one in each gendered restroom) that is nice after your very last dive before the drive home. Bring quarters, and honestly, I usually only need a few minutes because it's not the most comfortable shower experience. Don't forget to pay for parking. They offer an until noon and an all day so keep that in mind when you're here. read more

Great time of year to be out on the water in this area. The whales were out to play. A handful of them! Seals, otters, and jellyfishes surrounded us. Dress warm because it can be very cold in the middle of the ocean. read more

Super charming little wharf, the open sea with little white sailboats and fishing boats scattered throughout. Some restaurants doing the skyline and a walkway...it's liked a picture perfect storybook feel. We drive by all the time and getting a whiff of the open air and water, and when the weather cooperates, walking alongside the pier is a perfect way to spend time without spending a dime. read more

We had such a wonderful two day layover at this marina. We were treated so courteously and professionally by Eddie over the phone before we got there, were greeted at the fuel dock by a friendly staff member who helped us Thai am with great alacrity, went to get us an actual goodie bag with our marina if he and several helpful brochures and maps enclosed, and then were immediately directed to our slip. The staff members were so engaging and helpful; we felt incredibly at home. I can't overstate how much we enjoyed our stay and really hope to come back. These folks are really doing it right! Every single marina in Hawaii could learn 1000 things from these folks. read more

really great place for doing ur own dives without a guide, when u are already certified and have ur own gear. the wall helps you know ur way back with ur a novice diver and just starting out to venture out on ur own. the kelp here is nice to dive through. We even saw an octopus during an evening dive!! read more

Cold water diving is not something I would ever want to do, however, it is something my husband has done for about 24 years now. Last weekend, we went down to Monterey for Kevin's birthday along with his best friend and wife. While Kevin and his friend went diving, the wives went for a walk and lunch. One of the things I was most impressed about in regards to this beach is the flat grassy area that is kept up(aside from goose poop) and a great place for people to picnic, rest after or get ready for a dive and a great meeting spot. read more

Learning to scuba dive here was a great time. The variety of living things under the water seems to be much greater than what's going on up on dry land. Of course, it helps that a lot of things are brightly colored or totally unfamiliar to most of us. I found the water to be incredibly cold, till I got a 3rd wetsuit layer. This place has public parking, dive shops on both sides, and public bathrooms. read more

Hang in there scuba newbies! If you dive right where everyone else is, the diving is not super. Once you're certified come back for the metridium fields over to the left. The diving is awesome just a little to the left of the beach entry. Seals, jellys, nudibrancs (my fav!), cormorants, tons of life! Get Lava Core, you wont be disappointed! read more

1-star for scuba experience I came here to go to scuba diving and it was horrible. 1) I don't enjoy beach entries. It was hard for me to shuffle back into shore as I couldn't get my fins off (my fingers were too cold) 2) The visibility STUNK. I couldn't see past 4 feet. The entire time I was afraid that I was going to lose my buddy so I barely swam anywhere or saw anything. I did see kelp, star fishes and MAYBE a fish...ugh. We left the water after 20 min because it was just pointless to be diving. Apparently, the visibility in Monterey is 50% so-so, 25% good and 25% horrible. Unfortunately, visibility changes day to day so it's impossible to know ahead of time. I don't think I want to risk coming here again. read more

This was my first dive site ever. Although the visibility wasn't too good, I had some pretty amazing experiences with the wild life. I got very close with sea otters and some rare sea hares. On top of that, the rock wall has many sea lions on it. Ask any experienced diver about Metridium Fields and maybe they'll show you how to get there. Not too long of a dive. read more

This is a great location for transient berthers, just 1 mile from the aquarium. Great cafe and restaurant at the pier, if costly, and a huge fuel dock. We were berthed at the fuel dock, which is very close to the marines, making very bright lights shine into the cabin all night, which was a bit challenging. Lots of wildlife, close to a little beach for snorkeling or scuba or just beach time. Bike path takes you easily to cannery row. Laundry facilities were not great, clothes did not dry, but shower is big, clean, great pressure. Fuel dock staff much nicer than office staff. 30 and 50 amp shore power available. read more

this is the site in which i experienced my first open water dive at the age of 14... and boy has it changed over the years. back then there were 2 picnic tables, but now there is a grassy expanse to sprawl out on. i'm not sure what it's like under the water, but i do remember that there wasn't much ocean-life to be seen in this area. fond fond memories, but the water is too cold for me to return. get this girl in some tropical waters. read more

My fave beach! Lots of childhood memories here. The parking is bountiful, the sand is fine and the water... well, it's a beach! And it's clean and pretty :) The kiddo's loved checking out the seals at the end of the pier. read more

The center of the scuba diving universe for Northern and Central California - and it's considerably improved since the remodel. All of the classes, students, boat divers, fisherman and Fred make it kind of an exciting place on the weekends, but, for the love of god, if you're driving a car without a trailer and want a parking space, get there by 6:30 to 7 am - at the latest. read more

On our sail back up the coast from the Channel Islands to Tomales Bay we caught the leading edge of a big BIG storm and needed safe harbor. Unfortunately, a gajillion other folks needed safe harbor as well and all marinas were full (Moss Landing, Municipal Monterey AND Breakwater Cove) Fortunately the fabulous ladies of Breakwater Cove (Tiffany and Diane) Shuffled some folks around and were able to accommodate our 43 foot sailboat. We were on a public, unlocked dock with the lovely smell of Otter poo wafting aboard but we were in safe harbor and not out in that mess of a storm. When we had little troubles, like getting our shore power connected to use power tools (no solar power if no sun) they were quick to get us the right adapter to hook up our shore power. They were always cheerful, eager to accommodate us anyway they could and were just lovely. We'll always go there from now on despite other choices. The laundry and shower facilities were clean and new and the folks who are tenants are not at all snooty. And it's an easy walk to my fave place to eat "Sea Harvest Resto" and the Aquarium and a grocery store if you need to re-provision your boat. All-in-all a five star experience. read more
