An important thing to know is that Grace seems to be a very strong advocate of tongue tie revision, and if you are not planning on revising your money may be spent elsewhere. My wife let her know from the beginning that we are not interested in doing a tongue tie revision - this was because we did it with our first son and it was traumatic and did not actually help with his breastfeeding. Even though my wife was clear about this, Grace continued to lecture about tongue tie revisions and tongue tie risks throughout almost the entire session. She offered some but not much help outside of offering tongue tie info. The session was not very helpful for our family. Also, it's important to read the fine print that even though the session is quoted as $100, you have to pay a non refundable $25 deposit beforehand. The thing about tongue ties is that there are babies who can do fine breastfeeding and those that can't. My baby was the latter. Tongue and lip ties plus being born early made my little guy have a rough start to life. Grace was the third healthcare provider to remark on my son's ties, but she was the only one who recognized how much it was impeding breastfeeding. Twelve hour cluster feeding sessions, too much weight loss, inadequate weight gain, and everyone telling me that my supply was the problem amounted to zero sleep for the first 6 weeks. Yes, and I plan to see her in a year for my son's first dental visit because she was amazing and incredibly professional. Did the revision help instantly? No. It took a lot of hard work on my end with pumping, supplementing, and strategic breastfeeding to get my little one on track with his weight and with breastfeeding. It took me a bit to really consider making this review, but I think my voice deserves to be heard. When I first got in touch with Grace, I felt hopeful she would help us with our breastfeeding (I was 4 days postpartum when I reached out to her and 5 days PP when we saw her). So it was nice to be able to get in with her pretty quick. My husband and I met her & she was nice, had great hospitality & it was nice to know she was a fellow Midwesterner like my husband and I (she grew up in the same town as my husband actually). We eventually started. Grace is absolutely knowledgeable. I will not take that away from her - she's extremely informed on evidence. However, I do believe she fear mongers. She gives true information, but pushes the "awful" with it. For example, she really pushed on how awful tongue and lip ties are by stating how much pain my baby must be in just feeding & it broke my heart to think about my baby hating eating because he must be uncomfortable. She also pushed how pacifiers are awful because they have disease like MRSA... also, she scared me from wanting to see the dentist who takes my insurance by telling me all these awful things that she does in her practice (when this dentist is actually one of the top recommended in San Diego for tongue and lip tie revisions. She gave me this scary info so I would only see the dentist she recommends. The last thing a newly PP mom wants to hear is about all these things that will either kill my baby or cause my baby pain. However, I ignored the fear mongering vibes I got from her, though. I took it as she was passionate. What really pushed the envelope and made me completely dissatisfied is what followed the day after I saw her. The day after I saw her (saw her on a wednesday), I got a text (Thursday). She told me that her preferred doctor/dentist had an opening to do tongue and lip tie assessment at 10 AM on a Friday. Our newborn had an appt with his pediatrician at 11 AM that day so I wouldn't have been able to make it. I told her that. I said I'll call the the dentist to see what other openings they have (I didn't think we HAD to see the dentist the very next day when my baby was gaining weight just fine). The dentist had an opening for the following Wednesday (so it was only 5 days later and our baby would only be 12 days old on the wednesday appt). I scheduled for the Wednesday & Grace was NOT happy about that. She asked if i can try to reschedule my son's check up with the ped another day -- so I tried seeing if I can come in earlier or later that Friday or Saturday. There were no openings with either ped to accommodate the 10 AM dental opening. I told her that over the phone and she basically told me I was making a mistake (in a VERY belittling way) and before I can even get a word out, she HUNG UP ON ME! extremely rude. Mind you, I was 6 days PP. My newborn had some jaundice that had to be monitored, issues pooping & was a 38 weeker which is why we were seeing our ped & why I wasn't going to switch everyone's schedule around getting a tongue and lip tie assessed (mind you, I have a husband who needs to take care of everything to get our son enrolled into our health insurance and DEERS for the military & we also have a 4 year old who just had his whole life changed with the birth of his sibling). She basically wanted me to make the tongue and lip tie priority over other things in our life. Grace actually made me cry with how she made me feel. I have never had a bad interaction with an IBCLC until Grace. She made me feel like she was bullying me and belittling me. The way she had the audacity to speak to me, so freshly postpartum, is mind boggling. Come to find out, I guess I wasn't the first and only she has done this to. She apologized after the fact I wouldn't answer her calls and after I told her how she made me feel bullied. I was not ready to make a decision about putting my newborn through a procedure within a day, and my husband definitely wasn't ready either. We both needed some time to do our homework and research TT & LT revisions. I'm sure Grace has good intentions, she's knowledgeable and I know she's passionate (which is why I gave her 2 stars) but she's otherwise a bully, fear mongerer and rude. Folding Grace in to our family was such blessing. She has this treasure trove of information on breastfeeding (even for a know-it-all like me!), she validates your experiences, and lifts you up to be heard and seen in all you have been through and are going through. When our little girl had her tongue and lip tie released, I did not want to have it reattach or to perform more work on the littlest of humans. She and Dr Khoury (The Brush Stop) have a zero reattachment rate when used as a team. I was sold! For what I consider a nominal fee, the amount of time, effort, and compassion she pours in to her work is a tremendous reflection of how important she considers the process, the information gathering, and the outcomes. I like the no bs approach to the field, so Grace was right up my alley. I have read some of the negative reviews on here and honestly, I always recommend going to several consult for anything- its so important to triangulate data and information. I combined my dentist with my chiropractor and Grace's information to get a more rounded snapshot of my baby girl. Mind you, I had no pain on feeding and she was gaining weight. Please perform due diligence on your end as a consumer and really try to understand lip and tongue tie- I ended up having mine done two days ago (though I didn't think it would be anything significant) and the dramatic impact only nervous system, my swallow and more is astounding. What can I say? We came to Grace in crisis mode. My 6 week old had nipple confusion and out right refused to feed. It was devastating! We are so thankful that we were introduced to Grace 2.5 years ago. I went to Grace feeling very discouraged that my 2 month old son was not gaining weight. Echoing the sentiments of other reviews for Grace, I was at the end of my rope when I contacted Grace. In fact, I had already purchased bottles and was pumping because I was THAT ready to give up breastfeeding. I desperately wanted to breastfeed my baby, however, due to a lip and tongue tie (that pretty much went undiagnosed by other LC's and pediatricians for almost 3 MONTHS!), I had SEVERE pain and was in tears every time I needed to feed my baby. With my stress and anxiety at a breaking point, contacting Grace was my last ditch effort before I gave up. Having Grace by my side has made all the difference. All the makings of a scam. Look at every other review and you'll notice she told almost every single one of them their baby was tongue tied. We were recommended to Grace by our hospital lactation specialist pamphlet. She did not take our insurance so we had to pay 100$ per hour, which ended up being 185$ for an hour and 30 minutes. Some main points of our visit: - within about a minute of sitting down with her she told us (without even looking at our baby) that she was 90% sure our baby was tongue tied. - After sweeping the babies mouth she informs us that our baby is tongue tied and immediately tries to set us up with her specialist for Friday (so that we didn't have time to get a second opinion) - spends the next hour fear baiting us about tongue ties, trying to push the meeting over an hour. - spent maybe ten minutes talking about latching which didn't help in the slightest, after which she blamed on the tongue tie and continued fear baiting. - tells us thatafter the procedure (that we never agreed to) we'll need to come back at least once a week for 4 weeks for only 200$ - wife wanted a breastfeeding pillow which she told us we could pay for at the tongue tie surgery (so that we couldn't walk away) We took our daughter to a pediatric doctor and another lactation specialist who both told us she didn't not need a tongue tie release and that other methods should be attempted before a release. The second lactation specialist helped us get a good latch and we were glad we went somewhere else. Update: our daughter was completely fine breastfeeding in a week or two. I started seeing Grace when I was at my breaking point. Breastfeeding was extremely painful and I started to believe there is no way I can manage this for 12 months. She had such a wealth of knowledge which made me feel comfortable from the beginning. She quickly educated me on the vasospasms, plugged ducts and nipple blanching I was experiencing, which was caused by a shallow latch due to a tongue and lip tie she diagnosed. She has a team of professionals that she trusts and recommended a pediatric orthodontist to correct the ties and was able to physically be there to support us the day of the procedure. She also offers support from the beginning to end for the lip and tongue correction, which I highly recommend. There is no way we could have gone through it with out her support. Just knowing she was a phone call or or quick text away added a whole other level of comfort. And the weekly follow-ups to assure everything was healing correctly was reassuring, which you need when going through something like this. During the recovery process she helped my lo and I with proper latching and the proper position to breast feed naturally. Unfortunately; women are taught an unnatural way to breast feed and she helped correct it so it was much more comfortable for me and my baby. I can't say enough good things about Grace. I thank her for my baby and my success with breastfeeding. What she was able to do in the 2.5 hours of our first meeting far exceeded what all others were able to do in the 2.5 weeks of my daughter's life. Grace was the third lactation consultant I saw after the help during our hospital stay from birth. From the beginning, my daughter struggled to latch on and breastfeed. It was very important to me that I would breastfeed due to all of the benefits. At the hospital I was given some guidance (to the best of their abilities) and a nipple shield to help with her latching. The lactation consultant only saw me on the last day, although I had requested to see her before during my stay. I ended up getting a lactation consultant to come to my house a week after giving birth. There she told me my child was tongue tied. Although tongue tied children can breastfeed, unfortunately my daughter couldn't. By this point the pediatrician already had me pumping and supplementing her with a bottle of the breast milk I pumped and formula. This was devastating to me and I also felt that my milk supply was starting to be impacted as she wasn't demanding it. The lactation consultant was fine but I didn't feel as though I was getting much help. I saw a second lactation consultant who confirmed the tongue tied and seconded the opinion to see a pediatric dentist who specializes in infants and children with tongue ties. Long story short, my husband and I (after multiple consultations and referrals) opted to release our daughter's tongue tie that same week. I saw the first lactation consultant again when my daughter was two weeks old, and again didn't get much help to feel as though things were changing. She also told me that I didn't have much of a milk supply. At this point I took the advice of a friend who was helped by Grace with both of her children and called Grace. Grace was very honest and caring. She initially was hesitant to see me because she didn't want to confuse me as I was already working with another consultant. I convinced her to see me (which also gave me confidence that she was someone who wasn't just going to see me for the business - as implied in other reviews). I saw her two days later. Grace calmed my nerves and gave me the confidence that I needed. She ensured that things would get better and would work with me until they were working. First, I loved that she was hands on. She helped me properly position my daughter and get her to appropriately latch on. It was the first time I was able to get her to breastfeed without a shield and she helped me do it so quickly. She also helped show me that I actually was producing plenty of milk for my daughter. She spoke to me for almost three hours, something I found so wonderful as the others seemed to be on a clock and more eager to speak to me via text or email. I saw Grace two more times after the first visit. She help confirm the healing of the tongue release and continued to support and give me confidence while breastfeeding. Because of her help, my daughter is growing and thriving off of just my breast milk fed directly from breastfeeding. Grace does more than just show you proper technique. She provides love, compassion and knowledge. She gave me an invaluable gift, one she stressed on every time. She helped me continue to create a foster a strong bond between my daughter and me. She encourage to not focus on timelines and spreadsheets, but to enjoy the bond that breastfeeding creates between a mother and child. I see Grace as a mother, grandmother, friend, and guru of breastfeeding and raising a baby. I recommend her to anyone and would see her again if our next child also has similar issues. This is tough and touchy for me to write but I need to educate. Let me also mention that I am a lactation educator and social worker and I found Grace in desperation trying to find a consultant for a family member living out of town. My own consultant who I trusted with both my girls was unable to travel the 2 hrs away to assist in person but encouraged me to search locally where my family member lived and after a few calls and searches and reading reviews I came across Grace. Initially she made me feel so much relief that my family would get help with their new baby and although the pricing was out of my normal range I thought it was worth it. I think Grace was helpful and informative for my family and opened the door to issues that we needed to find out regarding baby's tongue tie and moms nipple issues and milk transfer which were so critical in the first week. She was willing to help and gave a lot of information and referral for the Dr. to preform the tongue tie surgery. She kept in contact with me and my family member up until the surgery but many times it did feel like there was some pressure and lack of cultural awareness and I think I just overlooked it at the time out of gratefulness and need for the help. However, months later after speaking to my sister a new mother who was and is still very grateful for the help provided I found out that Grace was actually VERY pushy and VERY much not culturally sound as she made comments to my sister regarding her race which were insensitive and tone deaf. As I reflect back on our initial conversation to later conversations where she seemed annoyed at my sister for needing time to make a decision about the tongue tie surgery I am disappointed and just even a year later I wish she would have been more aware of the type of energy and lack of awareness of black women and motherhood and breastfeeding. So Grace I thank you but also cannot fully give a 5 star rating because when my family reflects back on the time you helped there is still sadness and frustration about your unwillingness to be culturally competent and sensitive to the needs and challenges of a multi-cultural family. Unlike the other families who have reviewed here, my circumstance was a bit different. I have 3 children and successfully breastfed my 2 older children. Breastfeeding was going well with my youngest, then when he turned 8 months old, I started to get clogged milk ducts constantly, so much, they came every 3 days. It went on for a little over a month. I was getting desperate and contacted numerous lactation specialists. All of them gave me the same information that I already was familiar with. Nothing changed in my process, but my little guy had 2 cold viruses back to back. Hoping I could find someone who could help, I had someone recommend Grace to me. First, in order to set an appointment with Grace, she charges a $50 consultation fee. At your appointment, she charges $125 for the first hour and then $85 for each additional hour. My insurance did not cover any costs, because she is out of network. Cash only. Our appointment could have lasted only 1 hour, but she spoke a lot. Our appt started with her talking about her knowledge and going over her experiences/workshops/conferences she's attended. You can tell she's very passionate of her craft. She provided documents about items that I already knew about though. About 45 mins into hearing her speak, that's when she wanted my baby to latch on. I don't remember if that was before or after she said that my baby had a tongue/lip tie upon trying to inspect him. I was a bit taken back because when my baby was born, he was anatomically correct, per the same pediatrician who was there for my first 2 children...where minor tongue tie issues were corrected. Once she said ties, she started to go on about that. 2 total hours later, she recommended a list of pediatric dentists. She highly recommended the first dentist on her list and said to call them first thing Monday morning to get my son an appt ASAP. She also explained that she will be with me in the whole journey, and to help with the healing process and if I wanted to pay her now or when the procedure was done. Things were going a little too fast for me. I was vulnerable and panicked a little upon the news she gave me. I needed to talk to my husband because I wasn't going to do a procedure on our baby without speaking to him. I also wanted to speak to my son's pediatrician and get his opinion. So, I told Grace, let me do all this first. She seemed a little surprised that I wanted to speak to the doctor and to speak to my husband. She said that she also knew our peds and said she would send him our notes. Come Monday morning, she calls me and asks if I set up the appt with her dentist. I went to talk to her rec, I come to find that they penciled me to come in on Wednesday and that Grace already was planning to meet us there that day. I did not set up an appointment with them. I didn't even know if I could take that time off work. Again, everything was going fast. When I told them if they could keep me penciled because I wanted to talk to his peds first, the receptionist said, "We have other mothers who want this appointment, do you want it or not?" And basically said, a pediatric dentist can only diagnose ties, not a pediatric doctor. Also, everything comes with $$$. I think they wanted to charge me $70 for the consultation, to see if he was a candidate for the procedure because Grace can only give her opinion and the procedure is not usually covered by insurance which could cost well over $500. There was a lot of pressure I felt coming from both Grace and the dentist office. I saw our pediatrician. The first thing he said to us was, "So, you saw Grace." It seems that he use to recommend his patients to her, but her diagnosis was always the same - tongue/lip tie. So, he recommended another lactation specialist to us. The reason came clear to us after seeing his doctor though, baby had a double ear infection. My poor little guy was uncomfortable/in pain while feeding and he most likely couldn't breathe. He wasn't showing any signs of an ear infection though, so we never knew. The next day, I cancelled the appt at the dentist office and told Grace I cancelled. She said, well a lip/tongue tie causes a lot of respiratory infections...and I said, I am going to wait and see how he does once it all clears up. You know what also causes virus infections, having siblings who go to school and daycare. I can gladly say, once he got better, my clogged ducts stopped. Always get a 2nd opinion and trust your mommy instinct. I wasn't like the other cases, my baby wasn't a newborn and he was feeding fine for 8 months. Grace, I'm sure she means well, but in my case, I don't think my money was well spent and I spent a lot of CASH on this. She does need to learn how to accept credit cards, because $200+ can sometimes be hard to go by your set expenses. I feel kind of cheated and taken advantage over and could have caused baby unnecessary pain. read more

We were referred to Breastfeeding by Grace by the UCSD staff upon our release from the hospital. We visited Grace for the first time when my daughter was only 1 week old - we were experiencing issues with latch and preference towards one side. After asking us a series of questions, Grace was able to identify that she had a tongue tie and upper lip tie before even examining my daughter's mouth. She is extremely knowledgable about the anatomy of the mouth, which I feel puts her a notch above your "average LC". She works with some of the best professionals in the business and was able to refer us to a dentist who would release the tongue tie for us. It was also reassuring to know that the dentist trusted Grace to conduct the follow-up appointments with us, as she was starting her maternity leave the day after our appointment. Throughout the month of continuous care, Grace assisted us with breastfeeding technique and was also able to address questions we had about bottle feeding and breastfeeding after returning to work. She is truly a wealth of information! Best of all, Grace truly cares about the moms and babies she works with - we formed a bond with her within the 5 weeks we were working together and we're so happy that she has been a part of our journey. Grace was a Godsend to us. I met Grace when my baby was three weeks old and having troubles eating. This was my first child and I was unfamiliar with tongue ties and breastfeeding in general. Our baby was losing weight and seemed like she was hungry all the time yet frustrated eating. I felt overwhelmed and frustrated and a friend suggested I look into a lactation consultant. I first spoke with Grace over the phone and immediately felt at ease when we talked. She asked several questions and based on my description predicted it was tongue tie. When we met a few hours later Grace first sat down with me and provided a wealth of information on breastfeeding in general and then went into tongue tie issues. After our initial chat, we brought our baby girl in and she took a look and confirmed it was a tongue tie. Grace has been doing this a long time and has all the connections. Grace worked with us for both of our babies. Our first had a posterior tongue tie that was missed by lactation in the hospital, and two primary doctors. My son was falling asleep frequently but always seemed hungry, and would frequently spit up and choke on it. I would sit on the couch with him for hours trying to nurse, sweating, and both of us crying! After a month of misery, we went to see Grace. She found the tongue tie right away, and helped us locate a pediatric dentist to repair it. While we got him scheduled, Grace has rental hospital grade pumps that keep your milk supply up better than the ones you get for home, and her rental costs are cheaper than if you rent the pump from the hospital. I will also include that our primary doctor gave us a referral to ENT, and the ENT told us that the tongue tie "wasn't that bad" and was not worth fixing...yet it was impossible to successfully nurse. After we took our son to get it repaired at the dentist, he was a WHOLE DIFFERENT BABY. If you are nervous about getting a tongue tie repaired, It's worth it! We worked with Grace to transition him off of bottles that he became used to. After having our daughter last month, we recognized the tongue tie symptoms much sooner. Grace now works with a pediatric dentist in Carlsbad which helps the process go very smoothly. With your permission, she will let the dentist know whats going on and help you get penciled in. I greatly appreciated that, as I remember it was VERY difficult to find a pediatric dentist who was available the first time around. She will even come to the office and go back with your baby during the procedure. Given the genetic nature of tongue ties, we may be a repeat customer in the future! Rude, unprofessional, no covid precautions, no Aetna provider I wish I had filtered Yelp reviews and read the most recent ones. I had a similar experience as those but additionally, she is not following the covid precautions and she is not an Aetna approved provider at the moment. There was an error between her and Aetna, but I am struggling to get my money back after 4 months. Additionally, I struggled to get a total super bill including the booking fee and the hours of consultation. I do not know why she excludes that from the receipt for the insurance. That's not correct. Even though she appeared on the Aetna approved providers when I went to see her, it was not the case when I submitted the claim. There was an error between her and Aetna, but I am struggling to get my money back after 4 months. When I called Grace to review the situation and that the issue was clearly between her and Aetna, I suggested that I get my money back and that she can claim that to Aetna when the issue is resolved. She HUNG up the phone and she didn't answer my call back. It was super RUDE and unprofessional. I wrote an email to her and including Aetna, and she is also not responding. Aetna is listed as acceptable insurance on her website, that's not true at this moment! Be careful! With regard to the covid, she was not wearing a mask when we entered her garage. I asked her to wear one. The consultation was indoors in one of her rooms at her house, it was not possible to keep the 6ft social distance. During the conversation, she said that she had to take off the mask because she was not breathing properly. The positive is that she washed her hands. During the consultation, before she saw my son, she mentioned the problem of the tongue-lip tie. After she saw him, the rest of the consultation was focused on this problem. I didn't know it existed and she showed us photos, my baby's mouth, investigations....we were shocked. Grace did not mention that it was an alternative, it was more like that is the only solution for your baby to eat. Immediately, she suggested a dentist-pediatrician and her $200 package that covers her services. As she only accepts cash, my husband paid with cash, not the exact amount. She didn't even look for the change, she mentioned that she will keep it for the $200 package that we didn't agree to have it. She also was very pushy to make an appointment during that weekend. We did our research and our pediatrician confirmed that it was not strictly necessary and that we had different options. On top of everything, Grace talked to me about postpartum depression and the difficult time ahead, I nearly cry as obviously, I was in shock about my baby's health. read more

Grace is an absolute ANGEL! I was so worried and in pain with a fussy, gassy, baby who wasn't growing like he was supposed to. We figured out that he had a tongue and lip tie, and within the week, coordinated the surgery and after-care appointments. The price for her to work with us after the surgery was more than reasonable. I felt such a relief just talking with someone who understood and listened and could help us. It takes alot for me to write a review, but I feel it is my job as a first time mom to warn others against Grace. First of all during times of COVID regardless on how you feel the most important thing is to make others feel comforable. Grace is not a fan of wearing masks and made that very well known to me in my consultation. She coudnt not keep it over her nose and even took it down while holding my daughter. Second, I do agree that Grace is knowledgeable. However, the way she gives information and makes you feel bad about you decisions for you new little one isnt okay. She is like a used car sales man and tries to push business to one specific peds dentist. The peds dentist Dr. Koury is very nice and was so sweet, but for her to be in business with Grace makes me completely turned off. I let grace know that I was going to go to a consultaton with Dr. Koury but was probably not going to do the procedure until after I spoke with my daughters doctor. I told her it wasnt worth her driving down to carlsbad. When I arrived she was already there and wearing a white coat as if she was working at the dentist office. After the consultation, she said I have "never had a mom not go thru with the proceudre the same day as the consultation". I told her needed some time to process the informationa and decide what was best for me. She then had the audicatity to ask for money. I have never been so appauled by someones behavior. Asking me for money because she choose on her own accord to drive to the dentist office and now that I wasnt having the procedure done that day she felt she should be reimburst for her driving from Rancho Bernardo to Carlsbad. I ultimately found an even better peds dentist who works with much better lacation consultants who dont make you feel bad about not getting the procedure done the day of the consultation. I hope people do their research more than I do and do not get sucked into seeing grace when there are so many better LC out there who do not mom shame you into doing a lip and tongue tie procedure when the baby is only a few days old. My only regret was letting grace get under my skin because it forced me to find an amazing peds dentist in Carmel valley. read more
