Gold Pointe: Breckenridge Penthouse…read more We try to visit Breckenridge, Colorado every year. Gold Pointe Resort, and this is very special resort. The newer penthouse suites are extremely nice. A lack of on-site swimming pool is a big plus (no kid noise). The views are fantastic. We visit during the ski season, summer, and fall. The penthouse condo is pure indulgence. Gold Point (888.783.8883 or customerservice@breckenridgegrandvacations.com) provides a much-needed vacation experience. A gourmet kitchen or fine dining is available. Hiking and ski trails abound. During ski season, we park underground free at our sister resort, Grand Timber Lodge. We sometime stay at Grand Timber Resort but find this resort to be inundated with feral children, and parents who are desperately seeking solitude from their own children. The redeeming feature of Grand Timber Resort is that free underground parking is provided within a short walk of the ski lift for owners of Gold Pointe Resort. Of course, Breckenridge offers several different corporate timeshares, and we do not prefer the timeshares within the town's limits. As Marriott owners, we were greatly disappointed with the Breckenridge Marriott as well as with the nearby Vail Marriott. Most Colorado ski resorts offered enclosed parking, and Gold Pointe Resort offers real garages. It may be a good idea to rent a 4*4 SUV during the ski season. I have traveled through 90% of large U.S. airports, and I loathe the Denver airport with a passion. Who can predict I-70 weather during ski season? We really prefer to flight into Colorado Springs and drive to Breckenridge Skiing at Breckenridge is fantastic. And skiing Colorado is huge; Arapahoe Basin, Aspen Highlands, Aspen Mountain, Buttermilk, Copper Mountain, Crested Butte, Echo Mountain, Eldora, Howelsen, Loveland, Monarch Mountain, Powderhorn, Purgatory (Durango), Silverton, Mountain Ski Cooper, Snowmass, Sol Vista Basin, Steamboat, Sunlight, Telluride, Vail, Winter Park, Wolf Creek Ski Area. Colorado is a large state, and one cannot ski all these mountains from a base in Breckenridge. Breckenridge, Colorado is a vibrant four-season recreation community. "The stunning landscape, cultural heritage, authentic mining vernacular, and Victorian atmosphere have created a thriving community and premier year-round family resort, which attracts both national and international visitors. With world-class skiing, a continuous series of summer-time events, and over 600 restaurants, galleries, and services Breckenridge looks forward to continuing economic viability while preserving its unique history and character." We avoid the salon style restaurants that feature 25 televisions, and we are careful to elude the family eateries. A little exploration of the Breckenridge dining guide will provide great cuisine and romantic dining experience. We find summer vacations at Gold Pointe to be an absolute delight. While a little snow is present, there is an abundance of hiking trails, mountain biking, cultural activities, natural beauty, art galleries, ... My very favorite day's end activity is going to the private front deck of the condo, cracking open a nice Cabernet Sauvignon and simply enjoying the pure insouciance of the enrapturement of the ardent mountain beauty. Use caution in exchange or purchase at Gold Pointe; several of the older units are definitely not five stars, but the newer penthouse units afford terrific views of the mountains, have at least 4 bedrooms, a huge well-equipped kitchen, and a large dining room and deserve a five-star rating. Because I travel often to U.S. cities like New Orleans and San Francisco for national conference presentations, I exchange into city condos. While the hotel savings are great, I really prefer the natural environment and the luxury of scale of the condo and the scale of Breckenridge, Colorado.

Mitch, the host, is delightful, genuinely kind, and a fantastic conversationalist who makes you feel at home the moment you arrive. The lodge itself is a wonderfully quirky historic cabin full of charm and character. Every detail feels thoughtfully designed for weary hikers, from the hot tub, luxury rain showers, bidet, and incredibly cushy carpets to the complimentary toiletries, towels, and laundry service. The bunk beds are comfortable and equipped with privacy curtains, and the beautiful stained glass, local artwork, cozy patio, and three sweet resident dogs make it a place you'll want to linger. Breakfast was complimentary and even included fresh fruit and dairy-free options, and there was an honor-system bar stocked for the evening. My group of four practically had the whole place to ourselves, and we took full advantage of everything it had to offer. At only $60 a night, it felt like an incredible value. There are also private rooms available for those looking for a little more privacy. This was one of the most hiker-friendly hostels I've ever stayed in. I'd happily return in a heartbeat.

If you're there to ski or snowboard, the bus picks you up right outside, so you don't need to worry about parking in Breckenridge. The Bunkhouse is funky and eclectic, with old-world warmth and charm. You'll also want to love fur babies because if you're lucky, they'll take a liking to you and you can cuddle up on the sofa with a glass of wine. Mitch is the hostess with the mostest! His laugh is contagious, and his generosity and kindness set the bar for hospitality. This is a true lodge experience, so be open to meeting new people and sharing space. Bring your beer, wine, or whiskey, and relax in the bar while enjoying a drink. It's a great place to reconnect with the space around you and be present in the moment. The worst part about staying at Mitch's place is having to leave.

The Streamside complex is made up of several buildings, and we have stayed in 3 of them. Cedar is our favorite. Cedar has real wood fire places and they supply the wood! Nothing like coming back from skiing/snowboarding or apres ski and kicking back with a glass of wine in front of a real fireplace. Also, above the fireplace mantle, I love the 52 inch plasma screen TV's for movie night. The Cedar building is tucked at the base of the mountainside among trees. The good thing is that this provides the best views in West Vail. Also, Cedar has the best access to the clubhouse facilities (indoor/outdoor pools and hot tubs, sauna, steam rooms, racquetball, game rooms, kids cave with wii, on-site equipment rental and purchase, etc.). Also make sure to take advantage of the free shuttle service to/from Vail and Lionshead (no need to pay for parking or drink-and-drive). Although the building was built in the 1980's (the reason they still have fireplaces), the interiors have recently undergone complete renovation (New tile, appliances, cabinets, etc.). However, there are no elevators in the actual building, so this is a major downside for people who don't like or can't climb stairs. However, if you are OK with getting extra exercise from the stairs, then Cedar is the best choice and a great value and location for all that Vail has to offer.

The hotel is just across a street from the Peak 9 lift and a short walk to Main Street. I also like that they offer a garage to park your car. Their restaurant can definitely compete with the best in Breckenridge, albeit at a more reasonable price. We had a very good buffet breakfast every morning. The ski rental store was excellent, too, we got great K2s and boots as well as good service. For some reason the staff forgot to make our room the first day, and we had trouble with the wireless Internet they offer. But the rest of our stay was great and I would certainly recommend the place.

The place was not highly occupied for the week. Hmmm...?? the condo was ok, bath tub wouldn't hold water, and hot water took time to arrive, but ground floor meant right there by the hot tubs and early morning maintenance guys going back and forth. Privacy was not too amenable. (2) Today, days after checking out, I saw on my credit card an additional $95 from Breck Reservations. I called the resort. This was for "amenities fees". Not disclosed when room was booked or included in our full prepayment. Felt like a parlor trick. Won't be going back.

The loquacious salesperson comprehends that winter inventory will virtually sell itself; however, several winter months of maintenance fees will not support the bottom line. This simple analysis has led to a market glut of time-shares in destination areas such as Orlando. Another factor is that the U.S. time-share market clientele is simply not attentive to the geography or demographics of The Rocky Mountains. Interval International categorizes every state from Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming as the "Rocky Mountains." These states may indeed share the Rockies, but these states have very ingenuous differences even for the client who is a skier. And specifically, there are market differences in Vail, Avon, and Beavercreek, Colorado. All three of these communities are grouped together on the Interval International website with no discussion of the vibrant differences that location provides. A client from the Midwest or East with an upscale property will unlikely be unhappy to learn that following several hours of flight and rental car drive that the family will be vacationing near I-70 or in a poorly located time-share. Beavercreek, Colorado is near Avon, Colorado, and the difference in ambience is equal to the vertical difference between the two villages. Several years ago, my wife and I viewed the construction of St. James Place in Beaver Creek; then we experienced a sales tour. The developers of St. James Place in Beaver Creek incorporated the aesthetics of a mountain property that blended in perfectly with the architecture of Beaver Creek. Zoning regulations are vital to a tony community such as Beaver Creek. The insouciant time-share owner may visit the Vail, Avon, and Beavercreek page at Interval International, and "discover" 16 properties. These properties are vastly different, and woe to the decision-maker who chooses poorly for his family. Beaver Creek has several very fine properties, and some research is necessary. Beaver Creek has become a true four-season resort village and is home to some very expensive second and permanent homes. The minute I saw St. James Place available, I traded for a summer week. After I booked and can't cancel I received an email that the property is under renovation and the courtyard would be closed and there would be exterior work going on during my stay. Every one of their rooms is impacted by noise in the courtyard on a good day let alone crews jackhammering the whole time. I feel like their employee should have let me know. Very disappointed!
