Throughout the process, communication was poor despite multiple follow-ups. I received a generic email on April 10 stating that returns might not be completed on time. It wasn't until after I raised my concerns that I was told I had submitted my documents too late to receive the expected turnaround and they had done me a favor by taking on my tax return. Had that been disclosed during my initial consultation, I would have hired another CPA. After I later received an IRS notice regarding my tax payment, I reached out for assistance and received no response, leaving me to resolve the issue on my own. While the firm ultimately reimbursed the penalties and interest, they refused to acknowledge the broader service issues or take responsibility for the overall client experience. Unfortunately, based on my experience, I cannot recommend this firm.

When I went to file my taxes this year, I noticed there was a mistake made on the 2024 tax filing so in order to fix that I attempted to hire this company as my CPA. We set a phone call appointment at 9 AM. No one from this company called me until 10 AM which was at a time where I was not available anymore. In the voicemail, the CPA Mike even stated that there may have been a miscommunication and he's sorry that he didn't call earlier in the day. This is no problem for me as I called back when I was available to reset a phone call appointment. I mentioned to them when they call me to please call twice as sometimes it's easy to miss the first call. When we set the next appointment, Mike never called. Instead he said he thought I was going to swing by the office for an appointment on a Saturday. Odd since he never reached out on Saturday to see if I was coming, but for some reason, he expected me to come. I called back on Monday and said hey I'd like to sign the paperwork to on board. I spoke with Mike. He said that that's great and to call Faith their office manager. Where she was then happy to email me over the client agreement where I can print sign and scan back to them via email. The agreement was signed the same night. The next morning I receive a call from Faith where she leads off by saying we received your signed agreement and I spoke to the CPA and he stated that I No showed two appointments. Bear in mind, even if I was supposed to call in directly to Mike. There is no direct line to call into anybody at the office as they have a typical extension tree you have to deal with. So if you're ever calling them and they ever set an appointment with them, just so you know in order to get a hold of them you have to go through their extension tree. Makes sense as a client that you would have to do that for a phone appointment and they wouldn't call you.. icing on the cake was this was about a 2 to 3 week back-and-forth process and they decided as a favor to me on April 15 today tax day they would not be accepting me as a new client, but they would be happy to charge me $100 to file an extension. Just in case any other firm does this for you, I hope everyone knows you're able to file an extension for free online. I would say a normal company would have told me when I missed an appointment that they would not accept me as a client and it would've been nice to know that two weeks ago. Good luck to whoever attempts to work with this company. Patrick Rucker won't be your CPA. Just a guy named Mike with an assistant named Faith, who is not interested in arguing the facts. Let's see if they have a cookie cutter response to this review as I'm sure they will.

After a bit of fussing I was able to secure an in-person meeting. Since then, my taxes were promptly handled, and the accountant was extremely competent. I left the meeting not only satisfied, but also impressed by the amount of money JL Wennes was able to save me. That outcome compelled me to return here and update my review. If, like me, you find taxes overwhelming and want someone to walk you through every step, JL Wennes may not be the perfect fit. However, they are highly competent, and once you get up to speed with their process, the value is absolutely worthwhile. I now plan to remain with JL Wennes for many years to come. Not because they apologized or begged me to, they did not, but because they are highly competent and I want to save money on my taxes. I believe at the end of the day this is the single metric people use to measure the performance of their CPA and thus my prior review would be misleading.
