Brew-Stirs is a good Clintonville dive bar. It's nothing special but it does the job. This is somewhere to get drunk real cheap and not feel like you're there to enjoy the taste. It may be nice going to cool bars or breweries but one times you just want to knock a few back. The happy hour is cheap but it's never expensive any time. It gets a good amount of regulars. It's not like the hipster places where the tourists and wannabes come to be seen. This is probably the cheapest bar between Clintonville and Worthington. It's about $10 for a few rounds. When you feel like getting hammered why go and shell out money on craft brew or cocktails when you just want it to get to your stomach. It's easy to get drunk and easy on your wallet. The bathrooms aren't as bad as they may be. It looks like they get cleaned occasionally. The karaoke and trivia nights are classic times. I sometimes just want to hurry to get fucked up so I stumble into Brew-Stirs. It's a don't you judge me kind of place. The worst thing is the throbbing in your head when you rise up. read more

A local neighborhood dive bar. I've heard of fist fights happening here but have never seen one in person. The drinks aren't expensive and the music isn't so loud you can't have a conversation with the person next to you. In fact, when I was there with three other people we had no problem conversing amongst us. Whomever is tending bar is attentive to make sure you don't get thirsty. Smoking section is in the back but sometimes smokers congregate out front so your clothes and hair can catch the smell on the way in. read more

Honestly, I don't get the whole dive-bar obsession thing. I can appreciate a good dive close to home when I'm feeling schlubby, but seeking out dives for divey's sake is just not my bag. With that said, I give Brew-Stirs a high-end 3 star rating (which is saying a lot, because I would think a standard dive is "Meh" by definition). We were doing a Clintonville Bar Crawl, and Brew-Stirs ended up being my favorite for one particular reason: Bloody Marys. For $3.50. Good ones. The shape of the space is small enough to feel cozy with your neighbors but not so big to feel crowded. This would be a good day-drinking spot in bad weather. There are some times this is a good place and sometimes it is not. I think a lot of your experience depends on how busy they are, who is working, and how their day is going. This definitely a neighborhood bar, the regulars dominate the floor, but provide a testament to Brewstirs longevity. The food is decent for the price, the beers are very cold, the bloody marys are great. Just one mans opinion but their mixed drinks seem to be very inconsistent from bartender to bartender; one time it was heavy, the next it is light, and you never know what will be in at as a mixer. The staff does a good job of keeping things clean inside, though their restrooms could use some more attention. They do a good job of bussing and keeping you drinking. The crowd is diverse and gerally accepting of anyone drinking beside them. Brewstirs is a good value for what it is and it doesn't try to be what it isn't. So I stopped in tonight after boycotting this place for some time. (Not sure what brought me in here) but I am happy I did. The atmosphere is the same, hole in the wall place. After this time I will be back again. The bar staff was nice and sociable and poured a nice drink. I had a much more welcome feeling in this bar. It is still very much a regulars bar so they are doing something right. It takes me a lot to change my mind on a bar, due to the amount of bars in my area, but I will be back! I have been thinking about reviewing Brewstirs since the one time I finally made it in here oh about... two months ago. The boy told me not to review it because it's such a ridiculous place it doesn't deserve the review... but, I mean... clearly I just can't stop myself. Numerous people have told me that Brewstirs is where you go when you hate yourself. I don't actually think it's THAT bad - I can actually see how regulars would like this place... I just don't understand what would possess anyone to become a regular here. I say with with unabashed allegience to down-the-street O'Reillys, but also with the knowledge that everyone I have brought to O'Reilly's has instantly LOVED it, while the people I went to Brewstirs with all thought it was kinda gross and weird, and people I mention it to never have anything good to say, either. It reminds me of the bar I used to talk by every day in Chicago on my way to the 'El - which was open at 7am. Brewstirs is also open at 7am. So, you kinda gotta be a career drunk to love this place. I did go for Tues night karaoke, which was also terrifying yet the most amusing part of the experience. The lifers, mostly middle aged and very hard boiled with ill fitting stone washed jeans or similar get-ups, were all VERY serious about their renditions of Bon Jovi and Cat Stevens - whereas karaoke at all the other places I have been at is much more fun and MUCH less sad. Needless to say, we booked it outta there and headed to O'Reilly's. PS: A woman was drunk-crying at the bar and it was before 11pm. That is NEVER a good sign. read more

From the outside it does look a little creep creep, but step inside; it's a good time. Every night of the week you get a different crowd--truly. My favorite night is Tuesday. Karaoke with Original Psyndi :) It's the best ever! Everyone is very friendly and it's a chill, laidback atmosphere. Went here last Friday night with friends. It has almost a large living room look to it. Maybe it's the wood paneling on the walls. The beer selection is unknown to me, I was pretty hammered when we walked here, so I went with PBR. The quality I most remember was the DJ. He was superb. He and I share a love for Belle and Sebastian (seriously it's a love. My kids are named Clara Belle and Sebastian). He had a few of their songs, and he gladly downloaded and played one I requested. He suggested another similar band and they were awesome, too bad I was too drunk to remember. Really the place just has a homey look to it, and I feel comfortable here. I believe they still do karaoke on Tuesday nights. If I were a smoker I'd be bummed a little about the smoking area. It's essentially a handicap ramp out back that has a slight aroma of urine. Not to end on a "pissy" note, I enjoyed my time here. I've been here drunk AND sober so it wasn't the haze of booze that made me want to be there. Go and enjoy! read more

Justin is a great bartender! He hustles from end to end to make sure everyone is served. I've been coming for karaoke Tuesday's for a month or so and it's a great atmosphere! Somehow, when a bar is divey inside the beltway, or between 71 and 315, it gets extra points in my book. This place is no exception. It's almost exactly like any crap bar in Dublin or Hilliard, except that it's on High Street in Clintonville. On a weekend in the Ville, nothing is better than some QT at this joint. DJ Go-Lick occasionally strikes a homerun with his mutton-chop-inspired mixes that blast out tunes back from when we 30-somethings were "young." Even if he doesn't, he'll welcome a request after some flattery and a buck in his pitcher. The people are real, unpolished, and willing to revel in the Ville-billieness of affordable drinks, gnarly restrooms, and a bizarre mix of communal sentiment and angst normally reserved for gritty Irish pubs in the homeland. Crappy darts, pool, and keno mean that no one can possibly be bored, even if DJ Go-Lick has chosen to spin up some Tiffany. Somehow reading this doesn't sound like 4 stars makes sense, but trust me it does. This is a no sh*t bar, unless you want it to be...whatever you want, just show up and have fun. A table of drunk girls started yelling at us for no reason , and the bar crew did nothing about it . If you are use to going to a nice establishment don't go to this new location. But yes, the smell can be kind of overwhelming. "The drinks are cheap. " Also true. While I've witnessed occasional drunken crazies, they're usually removed from the bar pretty quickly. This is a rare occurrence at best. Never seen anyone stabbed, but have spoken to some interesting individuals who've elaborated on lessons they've learned during their time in county and state institutions. Again, we're at a bar kids, and this isn't campus (despite being only a few blocks away) or the short north. ----------------------------------------------- BrewStirs is not the kind of bar to go to if you want to sip on your favorite micro-brew, meet attractive young people, or listen to someone's Ipod playlist that consists solely of Sufjan Stevens and the 3rd Bonnie Prince Billy album. BrewStirs is also not a bro-centric, show-me-your-tits, Lil 'Jon blasting campus bar. I like BrewStirs because it provides a relief from campus stupidity and the gentrified hipsterdom that has come to define most of the bars that exist in opposition to the above mentioned campus stupidity. The drinks are cheap. The bartenders are super-friendly. The patrons, despite their "un-hip" appearance, advanced age, and yes, occasional criminal record, are all pretty friendly as well. Surprisingly, that kind of bar is hard to come by in the Clintonville-Beechwold area. There aren't many places to drink. Well, there are, but they're all shitholes and REAL shitholes, mind you. For example, wonderful establishments like: El Dorado's Zooey's, Or... Rafters. As far as those bars are concerned, take any of the complaints lodged against BrewStirs here and multiply them by Incest. Then there's Bob's Bar, "The Cultural Hub of the Midwest." You can go there, pay $2 for a BudLight at happy hour, or $4+ for their "World Class" selection of micro-brews, poured for you by some incredibly aggro-post-grunge motherfucker, who hasn't gotten over the breakup of his rape-rock band in '03: "Different directions man, just different directions. Had to get my life together. Get some things taken care of." "That's cool man...But hey, you still charged me for two drinks I never actually ordered...." ------------------------------------- Yes, there's O'Reilly's, but every time I go into O'Reilly's, I get the feeling that I'm at a family restaurant. So BrewStirs gets a thumbs up from me, for being that weird bar that smells like floral scented mothballs; that has that dim neon aura no matter what time of day it is; the bar that's decorated like a hotel lounge where someone turned off the lights in 1987 and well...hasn't turned them back on yet. It's the kind of bar where you can ask anyone for a cigarette, the only charge will be a couple minutes of your time while they elaborate on their child custody issues or pending divorce. It's the kind of bar that you can go to and not have to deal with all the bullshit that's present at most other Columbus bars. It may not be my favorite bar, but it's far from the worst I've encountered, especially in the Clintonville area. Certainly, it's no place to be afraid of. Post Script: Several of you seem concerned about patronizing a bar that's full of "career drunks" or "hard-core alcoholics." It concerns me that people may be going to bars not to drink, but for other, not clearly elucidated reasons. Perhaps to socialize? Talk about good books and/or movies? Maybe you are confused and looking for a place to hone your job skills, so you can become a more marketable young professional? The last thing I or any decent citizen of the Global Community would want is for you to fritter away your intellectual, social or career potential due to the simple error of misdirection. Here's a quick rundown: It stinks of bleach and booze. Its small, dark and dingy. The drinks are cheap. You can play "Kino" there, which is like a mini lotto. You might want to watch your back just in case one of the crazies who usually hovers drunkenly around the pool table decides to start swinging. Ahh, talk about a friendly little hole in the wall in a neighborhood that needs as many as it can get. If you made the terrible mistake of stopping at the adjacent bike shop (Baer Wheels) to get parts or a tune-up for your bike, you owe it to yourself to stop in here for a beer or two while you're letting those imbeciles manhandle your bike for way too much money. It's very possible to get stuck in here for hours while chatting with the locals only to stumble outside and realize it's still light out. In other words, this place is kind of a cave, but I really do mean that in the nicest way possible. I'd like to think this might be the proper venue for some Soprano's-style hijinx to take place during the daytime hours when no one around, but there's always been a slight hum here at whatever hour I've managed to stop by. They are open at 7AM, as a matter of fact, but I don't think this is the best place to be drinking beer for breakfast. The lack of natural light is likely to put you on your ass by noon at the latest. Either way, you'll enjoy a beer or two here at just about any time of the day. read more
