Brewery Legitimus is a local, independent, and family owned brewery in New Hartford, CT. It is owned by the Sayers and it opened in 2016. It's located in a former 8500 square feet factory. There's a spacious taproom and event space. The parking lot had plenty of spaces as well. I've been wanting to visit this place forever. It's also so close to home. I'm a craft beer lover and love supporting local businesses. The taproom had plenty of seating when we went. You can buy cans to go, they had an ice cream cooler, and they host many food trucks and events. Not only do they serve craft beer, they also serve cocktails. I've had their Clusterfruit sour beer; there are blackberries, raspberries, cherries in that concoction. I am a fan of the sweet and fruity tartness. I've also purchased their Equal Heart to go, it's a blonde ale with cranberries, loved it. I love their rainbow hearts design on the cans, love is love. There are ciders, seltzers, and wine to choose from as well. I really enjoyed their cocktail; it's a pinkish drink and I believe it was called cold night or something. I forgot the name but it was so good! Sweet and sour and tangy, I want to go back just for that lol. The customer service was friendly. I love that it's kid-friendly too. All year long you find tasty beverages here, and many available all year, but in autumn, with Oktoberfest and Fest Bier still on tap and Litchfield leaf peeping in the surrounding Litchfield Hills make this the place to be. The interior is dark but cozy, and the hosts behind the bar are always friendly, but there's a beer garden outside if you feel like fresh air. There are also so many yummy food trucks waiting for you outside. Lately Legitimus has an agricultural share, so check into that if you're lucky to be local and in need fresh produce. Used to be our go to as a convenient place to gather while kid's have extracurriculars and felt welcoming as a family friendly brewery. Tonight experienced having everyone with children asked to leave the back room as 7pm loomed. The older gentleman who came to our table stated we could not continue to sit where we had been seated for 90 minutes as the music is 21+ and may not be appropriate for children. Our kids were seated eating from the food trucks and playing a board game quietly, our party was 11 people frequenting the bar and food trucks. we watched the back room go from 30-35 people with kids ready to enjoy music, to 7 people scattered about. The kicker, later in the evening adults with children were sitting in the area, so it wasn't enforced and just inconvenienced the parties seated. We asked again and were told it's the "owner's law" and the music was advertised as 21+, it's not on the calendar or website readily available. We have been patrons since day one, but won't be again. I stopped by here two Wednesday evenings ago with a coworker for some after work drinks. We arrived to Brewery Legitimus shortly before 7 to find the place absolutely packed. It ended up being trivia night which is probably why it was that crowded on a random Wednesday. As for the space, Brewery Legitimus is quite large. It had a large bar and then quite a bit of seating throughout the rest of the industrial feeling space. You are also able to see some of the Brewing tanks in the back and in front of where we sat there was some art hanging on the wall which you could purchase. As I often do whenever I visit a new brewery, I decided to go with a flight. At Brewery Legitimus a flight consists of 4 beers of your choosing and the price varies depending on what you pick. My choices on this evening ended up being the Illegitimus (Imperial IPA), Once V3 (IPA), Lord Nelson - International Cat of Mystery (IPL) and Lord Dobsons (Imperial Stout). All of the beers were representative of their styles and with the lowest ABV of the group at 6% (Once V3), this was quite the strong flight. Out of the bunch the illegitimus was my favorite due to its hoppy profile and I didn't really have a least favorite since they were all pretty good. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I liked all of the beers that they had here, now if they only served food or had a food truck outside. read more

Let me be honest. The craft beer boom has dragged along a lot of pretension with it, sort of like the foam left behind after you down a nice cold draft. Beer snobs have started popping up to replace wine snobs. You've seen it and I've seen it. Not here. The hour we spent at Brewery Legitimus was not only very enjoyable, but about as unpretentious as you can get. A diverse group of nice friendly and undeniably unpretentious souls. The taproom is large, but not very crowded with furniture, so it really seems open and relaxing inside. There is an L-shaped bar for ten, a few high top tables made from wood kegs, and four big picnic tables and chairs. One of the interesting things we saw there was children inside the place! In fact one table had four little guys mixed in with the adults. There's a stack of board games and the like if you want to go down that road. The vibe was super friendly and neighborly. The young lady who helped us pick our flight was about as warm and cordial and downright nice as any brewery worker I've ever met. She was stellar and I'm sorry I didn't catch her name. I ordered a flight of Sloop Confliction, Satan's Kingdom, Legit Wit, and Pine Meadow Pilsner. I liked them all, especially the citrusy-lemony Sloop and the Pilsner. We also enjoyed one of their guest ciders -a glass of Embark Ciderworks Old Marauder. Pretty good!! Not too sweet, not too sour like some hard ciders, it was just about dead solid perfect in the sweet spot of our tastes. Made a very long trek out there to check out Brewery Legitimus recently. TLDR Version - If I was local and wanted a small spot to hangout with some friends or maybe go on a quick date, it would be a pretty good option. As a non-local, they'd need to do some refining for me to make a special trip back. Beer - Small place, but they have some pretty big equipment and quite a few options considering how new they are. Reviews on the app I use weren't very helpful and seemed a bit too kind to me. I thought their Legit Wit and Satan's Kingdom Belgian Strong were one of the closest to the mark on what someone would expect it to taste like. Didn't care for Purple People Eater (fruit beer) or Once V3 IPA. Dr. Strangehaze NEIPA and Illegitimus Imperial IIPA were probably the best IPAs on tap, in my opinion. Tried a few others as well...I love having a bunch of options to try, but to be honest I'd kick a few of them off the menu. Venue - The venue was very nicely done. Outside makes it tough to tell, but the inside is quickly convincing. Dark yet welcoming. Big bulky picnic style tables inside that were very inviting, a cool couch in one area, and an outdoor seating area with picnic tables, immediately adjacent spot for the food truck, and umbrellas. Well done. The parking situation is also good. Plenty of spots, nice asphalt. Not sure anyone ever really cares about parking like I do in a state where parking is rarely an issue...but just in case you do, there you go. Staff - Everyone employee I ran into was very personable and helpful. They seemed to really care about the experience. At the end of an innocuous strip mall in New Hartford, it doesn't initially seem like much, but then you step inside...and discover the outside patio...and take your first sips of a delicious, fresh beer. And then you don't want to leave. My wife and I drove out to New Hartford from West Hartford on a Friday evening to try this place out, and really enjoyed it. It was busy, but we were able to get beers and find a spot on the patio pretty quickly. The IPAs we had were great, as was the raspberry-flavored beer we tried. Disappointing experience tonight. We had a waitress that took our order and then disappeared for over 20 minutes. We finally decided to try and find her she was inside bar tending. Meanwhile .... the people next to us had a adorable young dog ( we love dogs) but during our dinner the dog barked non stop at a high pitch .The owners thought it was so cute but did absolutely nothing to stop it ....our ears are still ringing a hour later. I absolutely love dogs and love going to any business that allows them ...but keep them under control. Have some consideration for others. Not everyone thinks 35 minutes of a high pitch non stop barking puppy is cute. Management should have stepped in. We watched 2 parties get up and move further away. A third party left. We couldn't even hear our conversation. Finally we went inside to find our waitress who was bar tending & she asked what we wanted.....at that point we asked for our tab and left. We tried the new place down the road and were able to enjoy a drink and conversation that we could all hear. I love Brewery Legitimus, but I wish they would post a sign about dogs welcome but keep them under control out of consideration for other patrons ....and enforce it. read more

It was nice to finally see a brewery in the area. We came out here to grab dinner in the Shopps and had time to kill so decided to check this place out. As part of a Plaza it could benefit from a larger sign but we didn't have much trouble finding the place. When you walk in, you enter the tap room which is large and spacious with a few benches and a couple of barrels with chairs for the "hightop" experience. Now to the part that you actually care about the beer. With two flights we were able to enjoy all the beers on tap. You'll find some IPAs and Ales along with some guest drafts from other breweries too. What was nice is that they have a pay it forward board that you can write down whatever you want for the person after you. A nice gesture that brings people together. As I was drinking with my sister we noticed some parents out on a date with the children in tow. As much as I want to support parents going out for themselves I was troubled when the mother was feeding the baby a bottle while the father feed her a beer. Understanding that it was early in the night I would be challenged if they and others stayed around as people consumed more and more beers. There's something about the coziness of this brewery that I love so much. I mean the beer is great, and they have food trucks and also allow you to bring in your own food. They have live music, games, plenty of comfy seating, and did I mention great beer? The inside is large and spacious and there were several folks, not too many, enjoying the indoor atmosphere. The outside was also pleasant. Some folks were there with their children and pets. Kid friendly where it's okay for children to run around the outside area. Covered picnic tables and and several other high and standard height tables and chairs outside. The food truck on this particular night was serving fried chicken sandwiches. My girlfriend's was sweet and mine had a spice - both were good. Exactly what one would expect at a local brewery. I came here on a weekend with a friend recently. I was pleasantly surprised by the venue and even more by the beer. In general, the brewery isn't too different than some of the other local breweries in the area. Despite being located what I'd consider essentially a strip mall, they have a decently sized taproom and some outdoor space also. We had a few different beers, and we were overall pleased. I've been to several breweries recently where I've had to leave half finished drinks because they were unpalatable. They had a good variety of beers and also a few ciders available. Prices were comparable to other local places with the option of taking away growlers also. I saw a few people order food in or bring food, but it seems like they partner with a few local food trucks on some days. I came on a weekend when they were hosting a fundraising event for a local charity, which included a few live bands and pretty big crowd. Despite that, the place wasn't too crowded, and the service wasn't compromised. Overall, I'd definitely return here or bring friends on a weekend. read more

I remember driving past this place last year and waiting patiently for it to open, despite the fact that this state is already packed with craft breweries. We finally came in last night, lured by the promise of live music, and it was great! It's a fun, lively place with an attractive tasting room, solid brews, and a busy calendar of live music and food trucks. My fiance and I tried both of the saisons on offer and agreed that they were pretty good. I really appreciate the variety of beers on tap. Nothing grinds my gears more than a brewery where over half the beers are IPAs, since I find them undrinkable. Thanks, Legitimus, for catering to the "other" beer drinkers in the state. The prices were fair ($6 pints), and I love that they offer little 6 oz tasters for only $2.50, which is the perfect amount of beer for me. If the owners of the brewery are reading this, I have a few unsolicited suggestions to improve the place: 1) More seating please! With only 4 picnic tables inside (two of which seemed to be taken up by a birthday party), it was hard to find a seat at all. I couldn't help but think that a more efficient use of the space would be to have 6 less massive picnic tables instead of 4 big ones. Also, the bar shelves that line the walls are nice for people that want to stand and drink, but some more stools would be nice. 2) Please consider installing a sign that indicates where to order at the bar so people can form a line. It was a bit of a free-for-all with 2 bartenders and a swarm of people all trying to yell out their orders first. People kept sneaking in front of me, and we had to wait way too long to get our drinks. 3) Consider offering some cheap bar snacks. The food truck parked outside (Christie's) was offering $6 pretzel bites and $12 turkey or black bean burgers, none of which sounded appealing to us. We ended up leaving early to go to Five Guys because we were so hungry. That's just my 2 cents, but I'm excited to try more of the beers here and see where they go from here. read more

Less than a year after opening, Legitimus is following the formula of many other successful CT microbreweries - an open, industrial-chic tasting room where people can order food and play games while enjoying the beer - and doing it well. I went last Sunday with a group of seven, and the place was really popping. There was a guitarist playing some great covers, and the tables were full of friendly locals. Legitimus is one of the more remote Connecticut breweries, and if you're the type to make special trips for craft beer, it's definitely worth the drive; New Hartford also happens to be quite beautiful, and the Farmington River, which practically runs right outside Legitimus's door, offers opportunities for fishing, tubing, and walking. As for the most important part, the beer: well above average. I have tried the Kölsch, Double IPA, Brown, and Wit, all of which I'd compare favorably to similar offerings at other Hartford area breweries. The only disappointment has been the Belgian IPA, the flavors and texture of which didn't come together for me. They still have a ways to go before they take their place among the greats like Black Hog, but they're an outstanding addition to the CT beer scene so far! read more

What a great brewery experience. Went there when it was somewhat busy. I have to say they have a solid lineup of brews to taste and choose from. The staff were knowledgeable and fun to talk to. I had a Scotland travel book and one of the staff had just gotten back from Scotland 4 days prior to our visit! Great serendipity because we picked her brain about places and things to do in Scotland. Beer was good and I like that they also feature beers and ciders from other areas.
