"You're a real tough cookie with a long history Of breaking little hearts like the one in me" (Pat Benatar) Calos cookies are far from tough. In fact, they are pretty damned fantastic! We first ran across them at a Winter Market inside the nearby Brewery Legitimus, and we kind of made up our minds that we'd be visiting their store very soon. At today's visit, we saw seven kinds of cookies including three chocolate chip varieties, a peanut butter and jelly combo, brown butter sugar, ginger molasses, and an amazing looking S'mores creation. We picked up six different cookies and three small equally fantastic Italian Amaretti cookies. These addictive soft cookies had a chewy exterior and a soft, marzipan-like center. Two of them had a jam-like topping and one was pure unadorned almond goodness. They were sweet and delicious. The six cookies and three Amarettis ran a total of $25.76. We sampled a few of the cookies before the grandchildren made short work of the remains. The S'mores was a clear favorite with a dollop of marshmallow and sprinkles of graham cracker crumbs over a thick, chewy chocolate cookie. We chatted with John (one of the owners) who could not have been more friendly and helpful. He has plans to expand his lineup and offer coffee, jams and jellies, and pickled vegetables in the near future. We loved our visit to Calos cookies!

"You're in trouble when you find it's hard for you to smile…read moreA simple song might make it better for a little while" (Sly and the Family Stone) We were puttering our way through the Torrington Farmers Market, checking out the various fruit, vegetable, and baked goods stands when we happened to stop at the Simple Delights bakery. In about 3 seconds, we knew we'd be buying something here. We saw a nice variety of breads, pastries, cakes, cookies, and muffins. Some were GF. We ended up with a small loaf of Lemon Blueberry bread ($6) and a Cinnamon Roll ($5). The Lemon-Blueberry bread was more like a poundcake than a bread, and it sure was a delicious poundcake at that. It was super moist and very lemony, and since we split it, half of that $6 loaf made for a very yummy and satisfying dessert. The Cinnamon Roll was everything one would want in a Cinnamon Roll! It had sweet flaky pastry layered with that addictive sticky/gooey cinnamon filling, and it was crowned with a light layer of vanilla icing. Pure excellence, and a Simple Delight, indeed.

"Oh, by gosh, by golly It's time for mistletoe and holly…read moreFancy ties and granny's pies" (Frank Sinatra) Have you ever bought a frozen pie for some kind of a fund-raiser? Sure, you have, for a school PTO initiative, or in support of a kid's scout troop or marching band or Little League team, am I right? A few years ago, I bought a frozen pie from a co-worker and planned to put it out on our Thanksgiving dessert table. Well, that didn't work out because I forgot to take it out of the freeze! But even if I remembered to do that, I still would have been a "Fail" because that pie was uncooked and needed to be popped in the oven for 45 minutes. I totally missed that little nugget of instructions. Which finally brings me to Granny's Pie Factory in East Hartford. You don't need a master's degree in cryptology to surmise that Granny's Pie Factory sells pies, but what you might not expect is that they sell a large variety of fresh and frozen pies that are FULLY COOKED. Their website boasts 53 varieties of fully finished fruit and creme pies, either fresh or frozen. They come in a variety of sizes - 6 inch, 8 inch, and 10 inch. We picked up a frozen 10-inch Strawberry Rhubarb pie ($19). It was massive and seemed to weigh as much as a bowling ball. It clocked in at 2 pounds and eleven ounces. We sawed it in half and put it in our freezer for eventual use of one half a pie at a time. It is fully cooked and only needs to be thawed out to be enjoyed. No doubt we will enjoy it!

The fruit used is top notch - not that sickly sweet goo in mass produced pies. I tasted the blueberries like you buy in the summer and the fresh local apples, hand sliced.
