If you are taking a nice and relaxing drive on The Cape, that is Cape Cod for you not from The Commonwealth, try Route 6A. If you choose 6A you should make your destination The Brewster Store. Found in the upper elbow, of The Lower Cape, the Brewster Store is an old school general store in a refurbished church from the 1800s. They have been there for 100+ years. Two stories, the second floor boasts a nice display of militaria. The first floor had a candy section, penny candy, hardware, food stuff, tourist stuff, and coffee/doughnuts. Incredible, homemade, old fashioned doughnuts and select delicious artisan coffees. It is a great take. We sip our coffee and enjoy our doughnuts on a bench in front of the store, watching the gas lamp flicker and smell the leaves of autumn, the flowers of spring, or the cut grass of summer. I visited this scenic location today thinking it would be a fun outing for my family. I was upstairs with my mother and younger brother when my brother sat down on the edge of a bench with pillows because he wasn't feeling well. My mother talked to him asking if he wanted to go home, and an employee named Carol came up to us and asked my brother to move, which he did. She then proceeded to call us disgusting and idiots. I am not even joking, I cannot believe that someone would speak to customers like that. My mother then told the assistant manager, who spoke to Carol. The assistant manager was pleasant to my mother's face but was nasty behind her back. Other than that annoying encounter, the store was okay. Anyways, I learned my lesson to never sit on a bench at the Brewster Store. And just to never go there. At all. read more

it's okay but not as great as it is made out to be. I came from the outer cape and it was all right but I don't suggest making a special trip. There seem to be a lot of locals making purchases. If you're nearby stop in but don't make a trip for this. there's a lot of penny candy but there's a lot of candy throughout the cape. read more

Step back a hundred years or so and a lot of small-town stores probably looked a lot like this attractively aged little knick-knack-filled store. At least we suppose so since we weren't actually around back then. But we found the interior, with shelves jammed with everything from penny candy tourist souvenirs to old advertising signs to kitchenware, to be quite appealing. In fact, the store offers up a nice mix of items that presumably entice locals as well as visitors like us. The folks who run it are agreeable and seem happy to chat on a day when they aren't too busy. There are some wonderful old WWII items among the stock upstairs, but be careful getting up there: the stairs are narrow and steep. Anyhow, it's well worth a little time to stop by if you're in the neighborhood, and given that it's in Brewster, the neighborhood is mighty nice. read more

A very unique store and I loved all the stuff in it. The place had a lot of character and history too. I was pissed that they would not let my young son use the bathroom. I just spent $75 there. I get it that they chose to not open to the public, but when a little kid needs to go to the bathroom badly, the right thing to do is let the kid use the bathroom. I had to walk down three buildings to find one building that was opened. Shame on the people working there for that. Other than that the store was a cute place and I would certainly recommend. read more

When I go to general stores I look for locally made products like soda. They don't sell a locally made soda here. They sell Stewarts, which is good, but I can buy Stewarts at my local supermarket. They sell baked goods here as well as candy. I think maybe this store tries to be too many things to too many people. It's also crowded, which is not a good thing for a general store. People go to general stores to get away from the rat race. read more

To walk through the heavy wooden doors, on the wide-plank floors, is like jumping into a postcard from yesteryear. Even if it's your first time inside, you'll recognize the feeling. There is a heavy perfume of nostalgia that intoxicates the imagination and sparks a real craving for simpler times. While the quaint charms and "authentic" souvenirs attract seasonal visitors (by the SUV full), the brewster general store is not a show for out of towners. As far as country stores go - this is the real deal. Early mornings at the general store (my favorite time) offer fresh hot coffee and the best tasting jelly doughnuts, slathered in granular sugar. The front porch steps attract lingering locals with their morning papers, and offers the perfect perch to reflect on the joy that is a cape cod morning. PROS: No Wi-Fi, no Ventis. Being self-diagnosed with ADOS (Attention Deficit Oooooh Shiny!), I slammed on the breaks and squealed into the parking lot of the Brewster General Store. I just had to go. This place has everything you never knew you wanted. It's half-store, half museum. Make sure to go up to the second floor. The walls are covered with antique WWII posters and my friend and I loved checking out the old wash machine and cranberry press (so ya know - that's two different machines, I don't want anyone to be disappointed with me). The downside is the penny candy - because there isn't any. Ten cents for a single gummy worm? YGBSM!!! Still, I walked out the door with some cookie cutters and a whoopie pie. I'd like to offer a slightly different view of the store. All the other reviews are correct, thankfully. However, on a third visit, once per year, the novelty wears off, and the prices sink in. The book shelf in the middle always has something and is priced normally, but the penny candy is not penny but dime or more candy. The nick-naks you can find elsewhere, not as readily, but you can, for far less. I got a measuring cup for $2, granted I needed it for cooking. I think at KMart you can get a set of 4 for that price. A dip net was $8, and was $4 at KMart. So, they do have a good and nice selection, but paying 100% markup for the convenience seems just too high at times. It's worth going to a couple of times, but next trip I think it will be dropped from the itinerary as we know it too well. read more

Cute little place for everything from your morning coffee (hot and iced coffee but only a few flavor choices and no syrups) and munchies (homemade biscotti were awesome), to every other little nick-nack under the sun (5c candies, touristy swag, beach gear, etc). Upstairs has more stuff and a lot of antiques. The ice cream place next door is part of the same business I believe and THE go-to place for frozen confections. We basically were here everyday. Somehow managed to keep the kids from buying the place out. $10 minimum on credit purchases. Outdoor seating for enjoying treats. Right on the main drag and easy to find. read more

Kitsch, candy, beach gear... If you need it, chances are Brewster General Store has got it. Case in point: I was headed to the beach without a beach umbrella. Where did I find one? You know where. It's a charming place. It's ancient, it's stuffed to the gills and it's in the middle of everything. If you love salt water taffy, welcome to taffy heaven. If you want a decorative glass jar with sand in it, you've come to the right place. Parking is limited as the lot is small and it's on Main Street/6A in Brewster, which isn't really the best place to park. Prices aren't cheap (I paid double what my umbrella is actually worth, but whatever...), but it's a fun place to shop and the fact that it's privately owned makes this store a little gem. read more

My sweet and fun girlfriend, Jenny, brought me here. It is a typical general store. It reminds me of when I watched Little House on the Prairie. They have pretty much everything here, except fabric, which I do remember in Little House :-) It has a big front door and when inside it is chock full of everything you might want while you are on holidays down the Cape. T-shirts, sweatshirts, kids clothes, candy, toys, snacks, gifts, whatever you might want or not, it;s there. It is charming and sweet and although I was there in January, it was pretty much empty, I bet in the summer months, this place is hopping with customers and is the hub of Brewster during the season. Not to knock it but this is the "Black Dog" store of the Cape, while trying to be Alley's of the Vineyard a little. Kind of "the" place to go when on vacation during the summer. Quaint, old building with creaky floors, eclectic mix of wares. Nothing you wouldn't find at most other quaint, eclectic Cape Codde gift shops, but its just the place you are supposed to go. Having said that, I went last week on a rainy day and dropped $75 in 20 minutes. I am a sucker. read more

I've been coming to the Brewster General Store since I was a kid and nothing has changed in the best way possible. It's a classic spot to visit while in Brewster and has something for everyone! Love this store. We visit it whenever we visit the Cape and want to be touristy. It encompasses the feel you have when vacationing in the area. Love the candy selection you find in the old timey stores. The knickknacks, soaps and ever steep staircase leading to a world of figurines and collectibles. Since we were kids this store has been on our stop list. Only complaint is in recent trips the merchandise has changed, a little more modern feeling, to include our ever loved candy. read more

VERY Cute General Store, what sets them apart from other town General Stores is they have Ship replica's on the second floor, die cast - very cool. They also have so many antiques, its just great to walk through, like a museum. Then on the main floor you have all the trinkets and food. Yum! The people here are so nice, how nice? A lady was walking out of the store and I shouted out from the car "Are those Pretzels?!?!" and she was like "Yes! I have been coming here for 30 years but had a terrible experience today. My little 4 year old granddaughter had a bathroom emergency. I asked to use a bathroom and I was sent, in pouring rain, to the outhouse behind the ice cream store. It was filthy, and we were soaked. I was horrified to have to bring a little girl into that disgusting place. I understand that in the middle of the summer you couldn't accommodate us with your own bathroom in the building, but this was a quiet morning, and it was pouring rain, and the outhouse was filthy. I returned to make her purchases so that she wouldn't be disappointed, but I will never go back again. This was the most kid UNfriendly - and heartless experience I have ever encountered on Cape Cod. And every other grandmother I know here will hear this story from me. read more

We make several trips here every year. The kiddos love the candy and there are lots of interesting finds in the shop. The fudge is ok - nothing to knock your socks off. You definitely pay more for things as is often he case at tourist destinations. But they have been around for a long time and it is nice to support a local establishment that reminds us all of the days gone by. read more

The Brewster General Store was built in 1852 as a church but soon converted to a general store in 1866. This really is a general store with two floors where you can get a little of everything (i.e. homemade fudge, coffee, candy, souvenirs, decor, kitchen items, toys, crafts, some groceries, and so on). They've got lots of benches in the front of the building, a small parking lot in back, as well as an ice cream shop right next door. It's a very historic and charming Cape Cod gem definitely worth checking out if you're in the area (I wouldn't necessarily take a separate trip out for them though). I'm not giving them 5 stars because there isn't anything you can get here that you can get elsewhere for less money. read more

This place is a throwback to those old time country stores you would find on the backstreets of Vermont. The place may look small on the outside, however it is two floors of everything from yesteryear, from kitchen gadgets, penny candy, old time drinks, coffee, toys and all sorts of Cape Cod souvenirs including T-shirts and mugs etc. The staff is friendly and fun and loves kids. The second floor of this place is stocked with beach toys and cool military models and all sorts of crafts, puzzles and games. Some of my friends just mentioned the General Store and it reminded me of my experience there a couple of summers ago. When we entered with our 13-year-old son, who uses a wheelchair, a woman who appeared to be the shopkeeper gave us some pointed dirty looks. I was confused, because every other place I have ever gone with him, people have fallen over themselves to make him feel welcome. Our family looked around and made some purchases. I was sitting in the car waiting for him and his dad for a while. I got out to see if they needed help. I learned that the shopkeeper had made my husband take him out of the chair to take him down the two front steps of the store. His sisters were mortified because they felt the interaction had made a scene. Because I wasn't there, a woman we didn't know helped my husband manage him and the wheelchair down the stairs at the same time. This was far more dangerous than taking him, strapped in, down the two stairs. It was our least pleasant experience during our many visits to the Cape. read more

In the back there is an old-fashioned grocery section, and up front there are tons of bins of retro toys. Don't miss the upstairs, with its many unique home furnishings.
