I just got my wisdom teeth removed today. i had 3 full teeth removed, and the top part of my left lower tooth. My surgery was conducted with local anesthesia, so i can't speak for IV sedation or oral sedation. I've had experiences with local anesthesia prior. So I knew what to expect. The numbing....while painful was the least scary part of the procedure. The surgery was EXCRUCIATING.... even with the sedation. but i don't regret having it done, as my teeth were starting to decay because of the lack of space. My advice to anyone considering it. is PLEASE only do it if it's ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. Because i refused IV sedation... the local anesthesia, was painful enough that i started to tear up. I am currently writing this while my head and mouth are throbbing. My mouth is pooling with blood and saliva. i may have even swallowed a little lol. Please remember not to wait until you're 30s or 40s to have it done. The doctor was kind and understanding. Dr Brian Fong: "You were brave, most people fall asleep for the procedure." 10 hour update: I'm still in pain. but a little less than this afternoon. and the bleeding has lessened. read more

This was the first time I had implants and so I was a little nervous. Dr Fong and his staff were very patient in explaining billing and the procedure itself. I knew what to expect with every appointment and given clear instructions on after-care each time. I was referred to this place by my dentist for wisdom teeth surgery. The initial call to make the appointment went fine and I was told I would get a reminder a week before with my appointment details. I never got the reminder so I called the office to ask for confirmation. It went to voicemail which is completely fine, I was going to leave a message about my reason for calling and wanting a callback. Mid-message from their voicemail inbox, I got hung up on. The negative reviews about this dentist are pretty accurate. I'm the primary caregiver for my 89 year old aunt and took her to Dr.Fong for a consultation. He walks into the exam room without a hello and after a few minutes of him silently reading her chart, he starts explaining the procedure. Still no hello, no introduction of who he is, doesn't ask me who I am. He then gives my aunt a piece of paper and tells her to sign it, doesn't explain what it is. I asked him what she was signing, and he answered in a condescending tone, "a consent form", like I should've known what it was. He then asks if she'd like to get the surgery done that same day. We hadn't even been told how much the procedure would cost! Secondly, and more concerning, is that my aunt is on certain meds which she was directed to stop 3 days prior to any surgeries. If he had properly paid attention to her chart, he would've known not to offer the same day surgery as an option. That's just negligent. Unfortunately my aunt is on a fixed income, and since she had to pay $135 for a rushed 5 minute conversation with the doctor, we opted to continue with booking the surgery with this doc vs. having to pay another exorbitant consultation fee with a different oral surgeon. I did let the staff know that I did not appreciate Fong's lack of bedside manner and inattention to detail. Their response was that of surprise and stated that he's not normally not like that. But after reviews of others with similar experiences, I find that hard to believe. The staff were apologetic and said they would share my feedback with Fong. My son was scheduled next day for a consult. They move quickly and knew he was in pain. He needed both top wisdom teeth removed. I had a nice conversation over the phone with Lisa, and had explained what happened with previous oral surgeon, due to my son's high anxiety, as well as high functioning on the spectrum. He's had issues where he cancels 10- 15 times due to anxiety issues. They assured me, he would be fine. Day of consult, he was in and out within a matter of minutes. Dr. Fong answered all his concerns. He was given an after surgery care list, etc. I paid up front, so they could charge my insurance and was told they would refund me with a check. Day before procedure, I called to find out if I could pick up meds, so I wouldn't have to drive afterwards, since I had just fractured my ankle. They couldn't find my son's chart, name, and mentioned meds were sent to Arden location? I had them switch to a closer pharmacy. Then I called back to see if they were ready for pickup, they looked up # again and office staff realized that it was the wrong person? How many have his b day, and unique name going in same day as son I thought? I was a little perplexed. She figured it out eventually, put in the order for his meds so we could get the day before his procedure. I told her to make sure she sends the meds back to Arden for the other patient as well! That was interesting. Day of procedure- Very quick, my son was extremely nervous, high anxiety. He was told he could bring his music, but he chose not to. I could hear the technician talking to him, "It's okay, you're doing great, almost done, you're done." Over and over again, until he came out, less than 25 minutes! He told me his legs were shaking uncontrollably, but I was proud of him, and happy that the office catered to his needs. The only thing I'd recommend is a food list of do's or don'ts, that way he knows what he can eat and not eat, and when he can resume regular diet. He didn't need pain meds until second day. Not a lot of bleeding, made soft foods for the first few days. Second day he took pain meds, zero swelling, iced, salt water rinse, and took antibiotics. He healed just fine. I called my insurance following week to ask how much of the claim they covered, they asked for Fong's office info, and before you know it, they had me on a 3 way call? I didn't know the rep was going to call them, but I guess she wanted to get the claim asap or codes. Anyhow, call was transferred to Lisa, and she was really rude to the rep, didn't let her finish talking, told her claim was mailed in, and cut her off. I saw a different side of her. The rep apologized, Lisa just hung up without saying bye. I emailed her after the phone call to explain, and apologized because I didn't think they'd call. I knew she did send in claim and was doing her job. I also told her, I denoted irritation in her voice, she responded and said she wasn't, ok- Last week I received an email regarding claim, that all was paid, showing amount paid etc. I emailed Lisa to notify that she could just hand over check when my son arrived for follow up, because I won't be present, which will be tomorrow. Response, we haven't received payment yet and don't normally cut checks until end of the month, but if you need the check, I can ask if it can be written out mid month? I didn't ask when, how long. I was stating facts that I won't be present, hand to my son. I'm not in dire need of the funds. I just assumed that since payment posted, check would be ready. I've always dealt with the other way around, pay after claim is submitted, and I'm billed, but I was told Fong is old school, no problem. For some reason, Lisa seems to get irritated when you send her emails, as in you are trying to tell her how to do her job? Not the case, she seems to get very sensitive quickly, and can switch modes, from friendly to cold. Aside from those hiccups- I gave 5 stars because they took care of my son(that's want mattered most),procedure was quick and was smooth, in and out. Ample parking, big open office, extremely clean, Dr. Fong addressed all, extremely polite, and friendly. read more

I had a big molar extracted in his office. After haveing the area numbed, Dr. Brian said "you will feel push" four times. Each time was like a gentle push. Then he said the tooth was out. That was it ! I was so amazed at the painless and quick work. He explained the procudure very clearly with a smile, making me anticipate what would happen with calmness. Going in I was nervous due to having complications with a wisdom tooth in the past, but I instantly felt at ease at this place. I went here twice to get my wisdom teeths pulled out. The first experience was better in my opinion because I remember the doctor being more extensive with the teaching and explanations. I also remember how on the evening of my wisdom teeth being pulled out, the doctor himself, Brian Fong, actually called me on my personal phone to check up on me. That was very kind of him and I really appreciated that. This time, he wasn't that extensive and he also did not call me. Kind of disappointing, but I think maybe it's because it's my second time, so he didn't think it was necessary probably. I would have hoped he still did though, but it's not too big of a deal. The second time around, I did have an emergency because my wisdom teeth started to come out randomly and wash causing my cheek to puff out and cause some swelling on my face. I got an appointment not as soon as I wanted it to, but I got one earlier than the original time I had. I thought I would have to come back to get my teeth pulled out, but I was able to get my teeth pulled the same day which I was so happy about. The pulling only took about 20 minutes which was pretty fast and it healed with no complications. Overall, Brian Fong is good and if anyone needs their wisdom teeth taken out, Dr. Fong is a great oral surgeon. read more

Dr. Fong was highly recommended by my dentist and a few friends, and I will definitely echo their recommendation. Dr. Fong extracted all four of my wisdom teeth when I was 27. I didn't have them removed when I was a teenager, and because of that my lower molars had grown to the point where they could be potentially near or on the nerve in my jaw. Dr. Fong took extra precautions and had me take a 3D X-ray to get the best view of my teeth in relation to the nerve. He was always very calm, thorough, and professional. I have no dental insurance, so I paid for the procedure out of pocket, and I feel the price was very fair. I chose to be put to sleep, so the procedure was very easy. I had more than enough pain medicine and no complications. I had no numbness after my procedure, even with the increased risk posed by my lower teeth and nerve. Decided to finally come in and get the last two of my wisdom teeth pulled since they had been bothering me. My brothers and sisters have had their procedures done by him as well so I kind of had an idea as to what I was to expect. Made an appointment and I didn't know that this first appointment was just to schedule the actual procedure if I was going to be slept. Dr. Fong was so nice in recommending certain anesthesias and my problem was the the injections didn't work on me and he asked when I wanted my top the out and I told him today my tooth hurts. In approximately 5 minutes he had me in a chair ready to take it out. I've had the worst experience a few years back and I started getting anxiety. He did have a problem indeed like I said he would I have no idea why the shots don't really work but as he was taking my tooth out I didn't feel it and before I knew it , it was all over and I didn't even know my tooth was out until he told me! He prescribed me medication and I walked out 100% normal. Crazy thing is I didn't even swell up like a chip monk! And I'm healing so great! I have never experienced such a smooth procedure like this one I recommend him so much! read more

Was referred over by my general dentist office for the wisdom tooth extraction. The front desk confirmed with the receptionist May that X-rays were covered by Delta. I went in and seen Dr. Fong and paid a $95 dollar fee which I assumed was towards a deductible. Received a bill shortly have for the panoramic film (special X-ray that May says is not covered by Delta), so instead of opening your mouth and saying delta typically doesn't cover this type of x-ray and letting me decide whether I want to go through with it our not she just keeps quiet and sends me a bill for it later.... To top it off on that bill is the payment I made for a "Specialist Consultation?!" I called delta and they say they never even received a claim for that.... But that's what I paid out of pocket. I didn't go through with the wisdom teeth extraction and the two stars goes to the doctor himself because he gave me the necessary knowledge when it came to the wisdom teeth. But as for billing and sneaky May, there is no transparency when it comes to money so anybody who's going to them I'd definitely get the billing codes first and call your insurance to see what's covered and make sure she gives up all the billing codes. read more

I chose to come here due to the stellar yelp reviews. However, my experience was not great. Like many others, I was here for wisdom teeth removal and I chose to go under for the procedure. After I made my appointments months in advance, I never received a phone call letting me know how I should prepare. No phone call the week or day before as a reminder to not eat or drink the night before. I had to call them and confirm my appointment and details as well. The day of the surgery came. I entered the clinic and they just sat me down and started poking me with needles without saying anything. It made me feel like they just wanted me in and out as soon as possible. I was sent home afterwards with gauze and prescriptions for pain medication and antibiotics. Unlike previous yelpers, there were no phone calls or any word for them afterwards. Never once checked in on me. I got an infection about 2 weeks after my procedure. When the pain and swelling started again 2 weeks after my procedure (this was a Saturday), I called the office twice with no response. Pus started leaking out a day later so I went to a new doctor and was prescribed other antibiotics. I am really unhappy with how everything turned out and wish I had gone elsewhere. read more

I was referred to Dr. Fong by my family dentist, Dr. Tin of Villa Vista Dental (see my review of his practice!), and I have to say, I am very pleased with the results. The consultation was quick and painless (much like the procedure itself). I was met with a smile and a handshake from Dr. Fong, who told me exactly what the procedure would entail, how he would approach it, how long it would take, and what the recovery period would be like. The consultation lasted much less than the 30 minutes to 1 hour I was anticipating. When it came time for the surgery itself, removing two impacted teeth that had begun to descend by cutting through the roof of my mouth and extracting them that way, I was set up and ready for sedation in a matter of minutes. I hopped into the chair, a bib was put on me, a needle in my basilic vein. "So how fast is the anesthetic going to work?" "Oh you'll feel it in a few minu-..." Bam, I was out cold. Next thing I know, I'm out cold on the couch in my living room back at home with gauze in my mouth and little to no pain whatsoever. The dressing on a wound came out later that same night and I freaked out. I had been given Dr. Fong's cell number for emergencies, and by the time this happened, it was already around 12 or 1 AM, so I was really hesitant to call and wake him up, but I ended up doing it anyway. He was surprisingly cool about being woken up by a patient over a small piece of dressing that was supposed to fall out/dissolve anyways. Huge brownie points in my book! A week later, after finishing the antibiotics and having the suture dissolve and fall out on its own, I went into the follow-up appointment. Dr. Fong took a quick but careful look at everything, and it looked like everything was exactly the way it should have been. With another handshake and a smile, I was out the door in less than 10 minutes. It's been nearly a week since that follow-up, and everything feels normal again, sans the two teeth that should not have been. Easily the most hassle-free and pain-free oral surgery I've ever had! Like everyone else, I came here to have all of my wisdom's removed by Dr. Fong. I remember being put on anesthesia and the next thing I know, I woke up at home with a swollen face. On a serious note, he does really care about his patients. He personally called me the day after the surgery to see how I was doing. That's rare, and even if it wasn't, to have him personally call and check up on you shows that he really cares about his patients. Dr. Fong and his team were very attentive to my concerns and they made the procedure as quick and easy as possible, checking frequently to make sure that I was holding up okay throughout the procedure. I've been looking around for many oral surgeons in the Sacramento area, but Dr. Fong was recommended by my regular dentist. We decided to go in and see what needed to be done and how much it would cost. The staff is awesome, answering any questions one may have about the appointment times and operation. Dr. Fong came in and outlined the process as well as answered any questions. Just had all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted... My mouth is still numb as I type this, but all in all it was a quick, mostly painless process (numbing needle). The operation took less than an hour (more like 45 minutes?). I was sent here through a referral from my dentist for my wisdom teeth. I waited to get them pulled until one of them started hurting really bad. I called and was told that I could go in the next day for a consultation and possible extraction of the tooth that was bothering me. I was nervous about going thinking it would hurt a lot. Total opposite. Everything happened fast. The only thing that bothered me was the pinch from numbing. Other than that, the actual extraction was just a tug and that was it! A cavity hurt more. I normally don't write reviews but I feel it's my duty to warn others about this office! My daughter needed her wisdom teeth extracted and we were told my dental insurance covers the extraction and her going under. Even though they had this confirmed they still asked me to pay $386 to cover the cost of anesthesia! I questioned this and stated why? The insurance is covering it 100%. They said just in case but don't worry we can refund you if they pay! What??? Needless to say I took her to a different office who was professional and not money hungry trying to double charge! Fast forward to last month I started to receive bills in the mail from Dr, Fong! Confused I called delta dental and they confirmed that the payment for the consult we had was paid in FULL! Not only was it paid in full but the office billed delta TWICE for the same service! I let the office know and spoke to May today! She said oh sorry I didn't mean to bill you!! Ummm you didn't mean to bill me last month and then send me another bill this month? It magically appeared in the mail! Do yourselves a favor and don't go here! However, if you're looking for a doctor with good bedside manner and common courtesy he probably isn't quite what you're looking for. The day I had my wisdom teeth removed he acted like he didn't even see me when he entered the room immediately started poking at me with needles without so much as a "good morning". My dentist referred me to Dr. Fong for the removal of a wisdom tooth. I was kept waiting for about 15 minutes, during which I enjoyed a conversation with his assistant. Dr. Fong finally arrived, asked if I had any questions, answered the one I had and got to work. No sedation options were discussed or offered. The tooth was out in about 5 minutes. Dr. Fong wrote a prescription for two medications, neither of which were explained, handed me a packet of gauze and was gone. Neither Dr. Fong nor his staff has called to follow up on the appointment or to "see how I was doing." I've heard from other patients and from Yelp that he's a very caring doctor, but it seems to me that he's eliminated those finer points from his practice. My car has received more solicitous concern over an oil change than I received over my tooth from Dr. Fong. Yes, he was competent at removing a tooth, but this was no five star event. read more

My husband was referred to Dr. Fong for oral surgery by our long-term, family dentist. The tooth extraction of February 19 went fine but Dr. Fong failed to seek a thorough review of all of the medications prescribed to my husband--namely Pradoxa, a blood thinner. Therefore, upon completion of the tooth extraction, my husband's mouth began to bleed so much so that he drove himself to the nearest Emergency Room where he was admitted and remained for two hours before the bleeding stopped enough for him to be driven home. Our daughter and I took off from work and drove to the Emergency Room upon review of the pictures my husband had sent to us. The pictures were horrifying, but when I saw my husband in the Emergency Room, I just cried. The blood and swelling were too much. My husband looked awful. The following morning I called Dr. Fong to inform him of my husband's visit to the Emergency Room. Dr. Fong noted that my husband did not list Warfin or Cumadin on his list of meds. I proceeded to inform Dr. Fong about Pradoxa and I politely reminded him that I had just informed him about a potential life-threatening situation and that he had not expressed an apology--Dr. Fong still did not apologize. During a follow-up conversation that my husband had with Dr. Fong late last week in which he inquired about removing my husband's stiches (which my husband refused)--still no apology. Finally, on March 3, Dr. Fong offered an apology after he had spoken to our family dentist, who by the way, was deeply concerned about this situation. Both my sons had their wisdom teeth removed by Dr. Brian Fong. First encounter made me feel how honest and trustworthy he is. My youngest son went in for a consult and Dr. Fong actually said that he did not think it might be necessary for his wisdom teeth to be removed. My son did say he felt the wisdom teeth were moving his teeth and did not want them to crowd and push since he had already done the braces thing. He made my son feel at ease about it all. Going forward, I had paid the difference for the procedure that the insurance would not cover. Dr. Fong came out and said the extraction was easier and faster than anticipated and thus, the cost would be less. I could not believe my ears.....most doctors and businesses would not be that honest and refund money back, especially after you paid. I tell this story to everyone and vouch for his integrity. Also, my son had not much pain and recovered very fast and was asking to play rugby a few days after, though Dr. Fong said he needed to wait. My oldest son had his wisdom teeth extracted the following year. He is more anxious in a medical setting but Dr. Fong was patient and kind, making him feel comfortable.
