Like other posters, I found Dr.Davis to be a bit abrasive. I was especially shocked at how he talked to other staff members. He still did two fillings for me about 5 years ago. I recently went to a new dentist who informed me that the fillings performed at Georgetown Dental were not properly done and are now cracking, so here I am, about to spend even more money on Dr. Davis poor job. read more

Dr. Davis is hands down the worst dentist that I have ever been to. After never having a cavity before, Dr. Davis told me that I needed 9 fillings on my first visit. Not sure what to make of this, I allowed him to fill 2 cavities the first day. Later that evening after the novacaine had worn off, I realized that he had left a wooden stake in my mouth from the procedure. It was incredibly painful. After that experience, I decided not to go back to Dr. Davis. Instead, I went back to my parents' dentist who told me that the 9 cavities that Dr. Davis had diagnosed were very small decalcifications that did not need to be filled and would likely remain stable on their own. To top this all off, when I did not schedule a follow up appointment with Dr. Davis, Georgetown Dental called me SEVERAL times, almost bordering to the point of harassment. As a healthcare professional myself, I do not write this review lightly. Do not go here. Dr. Davis was unprofessional and rude (making several comments about my appearance and the fact that I am a young woman). He also told me I needed dental work that I certainly did not need -- I went back to the same dentist I've been going to for years, prior to moving to this are and was told that the five cavities Dr. Davis said I needed filled were extremely small and perfectly fine. I came here because I was having jaw pain and thought I would be prescribed a mouth guard. However, Dr. Davis prescribed Elavil, which is a tricyclic antidepressant and I was supposed to go back to him every 60 days to have my prescription refilled. The other dentist I went to confirmed the insanity of the prescription and fitted me for a mouth guard, which has worked perfectly. read more

Although the office itself can be a little disorganized on entry, it has it's own charm. I have been going to Dr. Steele since 2008, and yes, found the leave of absence very frustrating since Dr. Davis had to cover all of his patients. However, I saw Dr. Davis for the first time as I had 3 cavities to fill. I was terrified, but, he made the process easy, painless and my fillings came out looking flawless and could barley tell where the filling was. I have 3 more to fill and am grateful I have Dr. Davis working on me. read more

I have been coming to Georgetown Dental for about 5 years. I have been treated most recently by Dr. Sinclair Davis. Dr. Davis noticed last year that I was not looking well, and encouraged me to visit my primary care physician. I am a type II diabetic, and Dr. Davis' observation, and concern about my well being probably saved my life. When I come in, Dr. Davis expresses genuine concern about my well being and it is very clear that he is sincere. In the last few months, Dr. Davis has removed an infected tooth and put in an implant earlier this week. Due to numerous previous surgeries on my face and mouth, it is extremely difficult to work in my mouth. Dr. Davis worked diligently and patiently in removing the infected tooth and putting in the implant with great care and he made me as comfortable as possible. I am very grateful to have worked with both Dr. Sinclair Davis and Dr. Bruce Steele. Dr. Davis has an appalling manner with patients. The first time I met him he took my glasses off without my permission and walked away with them, ostensibly to clean them, but it made me incredibly uncomfortable nonetheless. I brushed that one off at the time, but then found his manner to be more and more offensive with each appointment. At a different appointment, he asked me extremely personal questions about whether or not I intended to have children (and didn't seem to be deterred by the fact that I was evading answering since that's really not his business). The absolute worst though was when he started questioning me about my vaccination history. To clarify, I am not anti-vax in the slightest. I am fully vaccinated except for the fact that I never happened to get the HPV vaccine and at this point I'm far over the FDA-approved age and don't really see the point. Dr. Davis harrassed me about this at two separate appointments. The second time, I challenged him a bit, asking what this had to do with my dental appointment. Let me tell you, he did NOT react well to being challenged by a woman. He was extremely upset that I would ask him this and blustered around for quite some time. When I got up to leave at the end of my appointment, he insisted that I come to his computer so that he could prove to me the importance of the vaccine (again, I'm not against it. I just don't see the point at this time, given my age and sexual history. And I see this really as a matter of discussion between myself and my primary care provider and not my DENTIST.) I walked away from him and into the waiting area and he FOLLOWED ME THERE to continue yelling at me about this vaccine. My husband had the appointment following mine, and Dr. Davis told him he needed to "reason with me." It's also worthwhile to note that Dr. Davis did not exhibit any of these behaviors with my husband - he did clean his glasses at one appointment but he asked permission to remove them first. He never questioned him about his medical history outside of his dental records, and he never asked questions about childbirth. I truly think that Dr. Davis has a problem with women patients and I would caution any woman from visiting this practice. I will not be returning. read more

Great Dentist! In November 2012, I had gone to see Dr. Steele because of the good reviews and he is a truly great dentist. I was scared of dentists after my last visit to a different location, but Dr. Steele was gentle with my cleaning. He asked what music I liked and turned on Madonna for me during the checkup/cleaning. I have an irrational fear of dentistry. Or, rather, perhaps it IS rational in some cases. I had a brutal orthodontist when I was a child and the 5-year experience left an almost irreversible negative impression. Because of this, I neglected my teeth for decades. Thanks to Dr. Davis (in this office with Dr. Steele) I can now begin smiling again with full confidence. This man is kind, knowledgable, energetic, and precise. Everything one wants in a caretaker. I was probably one of the toughest and most uncomfortable (also, frightened) patients any dentist had seen, but Dr. Davis made it a point to ease my anxiety right from the start. I'm only a portion of the way through all of the treatments I need and I know I can get through them all thanks to him. The office was clean, bus-accessible, and the staff were happy to answer all my questions promptly. Oh also, don't forget to ask Dr. Davis how many languages he speaks :) read more

I have been going to Georgetown Dental for years. If this was just a review of Dr. Steele it would be rated at least 4 stars. However, ever since he took a leave of absence in 2015 I have had increasingly disappointing and frustrating experiences with them. Their billing department has always had some issues but my family and I were willing to deal with that because we all loved Dr. Steele. First of all they way they have handled his leave of absence, which started in November of 2015, has been very frustrating for long time patients. I understand not giving out personal details but he has been my entire family's dentist for probably 20 years. At this point, long term/loyal patients deserve more than consistently being given a different we hope this is the date by which Dr. Steele will return every time one calls to book an appointment. Especially since we have been patients for long enough to have gone through appointment cancellations for a variety of reasons and the office has been upfront about the reasons in the past. Just tell us you do not know when he will return instead of giving us a bunch of BS. It will go over much better than feeling like you are being given the run around. Second, since Dr. Steele has been out we have all been seeing Dr. Davis. He did my siblings and my wisdom teeth removal over a decade ago. I remember him being direct and not having the most cheerful "bedside manner" back than but he was my oral surgeon so that did not bother me. Now though I find him to be very crass and dismissive. The first appointment I had with him I was so grateful they were fitting me in as a current patient of Dr. Steele's that I dismissed the phone calls Dr. Davis took throughout the appointment that seemed to be of a personal nature. However, it happened in subsequent appointments as well. Once he even took a phone call on speaker and proceeded to argue with and berate the person on the other end in Spanish. I may not be as fluent in Spanish as I used to be, but I did take 10 years of it and can still understand enough it. Furthermore, you should not assume in today's world that someone does not understand Spanish based on the way they look. It was completely unprofessional and I was embarrassed by the conversation. Additionally, I have never been in as much pain from routine dental appointments as I have been every time I have seen Dr. Davis. I mentioned multiple times that I have always had sensitive teeth and gums so please be more gentle and careful than normal. It's not that I didn't want him to do the work or that I do not have a high pain threshold, I just happen to have very sensitive teeth and I know my teeth and what is tolerable. He just completely ignored my request and dismissed what I was telling him as if my teeth/gum sensitive was because of my lack of good dental habits. At first I wanted to wait it out until Dr. Steele returned out of loyalty to him but I am at the point now where I am strongly considering changing dental practices. read more

I debated for several months whether to post this because I don't like to focus on past negative experiences. I wasn't sure if Yelp was even the right forum to address my issue since it seems like a passive aggressive and anonymous way to handle things. But there's no denying I had a very poor experience with this dentist and am still suffering the consequences. I feel the need to do something at least, so here goes... I will spare you most of the details, but my complaint is essentially that I received aggressive and sloppy care from the dentist when I went for a toothache. First, the dentist made it sound like a root canal was going to be the only option. Then the dentist put in a sedative filling, and somehow managed to get the compound all over my right cheek. It ended up causing an acidic reaction on my face and I was left with large red scabs. They lasted for weeks and it was very traumatic to have them on my face during the holiday season. They ended up scarring and left dark marks that are still visible months later. I went back to the dentist's office the next day to show him what had happened, but he did not offer any help. I later went to my family dentist in Arizona to have the permanent filling put in, and the experience could not have been more pleasant. He did not think a root canal was necessary. Instead, he put in a permanent filling. I did not feel a thing during the procedure, and most importantly, he did not get the acidic compound all over my face. This is just my experience and it may have been an aberration. Of course you should base your decision on a variety of reviews and opinions. Personally, I will not be going back here and strongly advise my friends against coming here as well. read more

I have to agree with the other negative reviews regarding Dr. Davis. I came on this site to see what other people said about him because I have trouble imagining he doesn't get a lot of bad press. I visited him when I got new dental insurance at a new job and because he worked in my neighborhood. For starters, I found his personality extremely off-putting with some of his commentary offensive. Iagree wholeheartedly with others' assessments of him as "dismissive." I found him the most painful dentist I have had and as a result I asked him for novocaine during my following treatments. He blew off my requests and did not provide novocaine. The last time I saw him, I did so due to expensive and medically unnecessary abfractions at his suggestion. I take the blame for not asking for more information, particularly about cost. However, I had experienced no pain or discomfort prior to the procedure. However, three months after the procedure, I now cannot bite into anything hard without pain in my canines. I assume I will have to pay my next dentist heavily to fix his screw up. I basically paid him to give me pain I didn't have before. read more

I like Dr. Steele and have been going to him for over 7 years. He is professional in his demeanor and explains the various issues in a way that a layman can understand. I have been reading some horror stories about other dentists here on Yelp and I am glad I found both a dentist with a staff that is competent and professional. Recommended. read more

DO NOT USE THIS OFFICE! Dr. Davis recommended unnecessary procedures which would have cost a tremendous amount of money and resulted in him removing a tooth that did not need to be removed! While in his office I heard him recommend tooth removal to two other patients as well. This is clearly a scam to make money off unsuspecting people. The dentist I went to for a consult afterwards told me that the tooth definitely did not need to removed. Also, the billing department in this office is insane. They contacted me a year and a half after treatment with a $300 bill. read more

Love Dr. Steele. Professional and his work is very good. How do I know? Another Dentist remarked on how impressive the root canal work he did on me was when he reviewed my x-rays. He is professional and skilled. Would have rated 5 Stars but his work hours SUCK if you are not an at-home soccer mom. His latest appt. is 3:30. He is very good at painless root canals and is willing to schedule last minute appointments whenever I was unable to make it in a more convenient time. He is great! I have been to Dr Davis about five times in the last two months for extensive dental work. I am very happy with him. He's impressed me as someone who is smart, with it, and who gets pleasure from being a perfectionist when it comes to toothwork. He's been very attentive to my needs as a patient. Some have called him abrasive - that is not my experience - I find him to be business-like, but pleasant. I also really like Katya, his hygienist - I learned more from her in one visit about dental hygiene than I ever knew from previous trips to the dentist. read more

I have been coming to Dr. Davis since 2002 and have always appreciated his compassionate care and great service. He performed a root canal on me that was so painless that I went to work afterwards as if I had just had a cleaning! Dr. Steele is the best! I got into a car accident two years ago that broke my two front teeth. After years of trying to find a doctor who could help me find the best permanent solution for this problem (and not just sell me expensive veneers that would be a temporary fix at best), a coworker recommended Dr. Steele. He assessed the situation and guided me through the process of getting crowns, including working with my insurance company and healthcare FSA. When I had another recent problem with them, during an international work trip, Dr. Steele came in at 7:30pm to do an emergency root canal. His staff also is friendly and efficient for regular cleanings. It's a family practice with a family feel, and they go out of their way to help you. He is professional, accomodating and kind. I haven't found a better dentist in D.C.! Pro: there's a stop for the D6 bus directly across from the office. You can also take any of the shuttle buses from Dupont Circle to Georgetown University Hospital and walk the remaining half mile or so to Dr. Steele's office. Dr. Davis is horribly rude and dismissive. I'm 28 and he had to make a partial denture while I wait for an implant. When the poorly made denture split in half after 2 weeks while I was taking it out of my mouth to clean it I showed up desperate the next morning broken denture in hand. The gap was in the front of my mouth! He insisted a pay full price for a replacement and complained about repairing the denture as an interim fix. He did a poor job. The office then erroneously billed me and denied it for 4 months until I had a lawyer send them a letter. HORRIBLE treatment, careless administration of billing. BEWARE! read more

I had been looking around for a dentist and this one was close with good reviews so I went for a cleaning and I was incredibly disappointed. I had a concern during the visit and Dr. Davis completely dismissed me. When the concern persisted into the next day, and at the suggestion of my pharmacist, I called and explained my situation to the receptionist who dismissed me as well but promised a return phone call from the dentist. After no phone call, I left a pleading voicemail and still heard nothing back. I am very frustrated with my experience and the neglectful lack of follow-up. read more

I had been going to Georgetown Dental for 20 years. While Dr. Steele was out on sabbatical, I saw Dr. Davis. At the conclusion of my appointment; Dr. Davis told me that I had 6 cavities and the 2 of the 3 crowns Dr. Steele put in needed to be restored. I was completely dumbfounded after getting my teeth cleaned every three months that I would have so many cavities and also have to restore two crowns. Two of the three crowns are less than 2 1/2 years old. The next day, I requested copy of the x-ray and had them indicate which teeth needed fillings. After receiving the documentation, I went and had a second opinion. My new dentist a Harvard graduate, said that I had ONE cavity, not SIX and those crowns are fine. I will miss Dr. Steel whom I considered a friend. I'm not sure what is going on there but I saved myself thousands of dollars. read more

Had my appointment extended multiple times, was asked to come back to finish a treatment that was supposed to take only a single day, and was ripped off here. The doctor I had asked me if I wanted all of these extra services without telling me about additional charges and misquoted the charge for my treatment twice and laughed it off. Quality of the actual dental services was fine but for him to tell me that I would have to pay a certain amount and then charge me twice that amount later on is just not worth the stress and money. read more

Dr. Davis is great. I have a crown on my front tooth that came off over this holiday weekend, so first thing Monday morning I began calling local dentists (I have moved away from my original dentist office) and quoting re-cementing prices. Most asked roughly $100 standard for re-cementing plus additional obligatory fees amounting to more than the task itself. In my new apartment building is a family dentist office that quoted me over 200 and seemed like they didnt care whether I left or not, so I did. Good thing I did leave, because I biked over and found Georgetown Dental; they were the only ones willing to work with me in the slightest. I asked if they required the x-ray ect, because I simply wanted to re-cement. Dr. Davis put his arm on my shoulder, walked me back into the office, and told me to have a seat. He essentially said "Dont worry, we'll take care of you." He ended up re-cementing AND shaping up my chipped and slightly worn crown. He even shaped up my bottom tooth so as to lessen interaction between the tooth and crown! It costed half of what other places were asking and he gladly did more for me than he was required, seemingly for the sole purpose of making the customer/patient happy (gasp!). Extremely professional, thorough and pretty funny too. Highly recommended. read more

I do not even know where to begin with this review... I will start off with the fact that the Dental Hygienist was sweet, and she was the only redeeming part of my visit. However, they told me I had ELEVEN cavities and may need 2-3 root canals on my first visit. It felt like a hit and run because Dr. Davis did not even take an extra minute to explain which cavities are the most severe, how we should tackle these health (and financial) issues, and what I could do to prevent this from happening in the future. They also told me they only 2 cavities in a sitting, so to get all of that work done I would have to come to the office 5+ times! Additionally, I felt like I was in a barn stall since there are no private rooms... I could hear the other patient getting his root canal done (eek!), and EVERYONE could hear me getting the horrible news. I was so embarrassed-- there was no privacy! I ended up going to get a second opinion at a MUCH better dentist, and lo and behold I have 7 cavities with a 50% chance of 1 needing a root canal... still not great, but 7 is far less than 11, especially when each cavity filling costs $250 and up. When I reached out to Georgetown Dental to get my x-rays to send to my new dentist, they not only followed-up via text message from an employee's personal cell number (inappropriate), but when I hadn't received my x-rays and called again the guy literally told me that he lost the office's password and was locked out of their email account... that level of disorganization is not okay, and furthermore telling your client that is definitely a big no-no! Worst experience ever. Only see Dr Davis if you dont mind having your time wasted. I had my first appointment with Dr Davis back in October, 2011 and 30 minutes before my appointment they called to ask if I could reschedule. When I told them I could not due to work, the receptionist was rude and short. I arrived to my appointment 10 minutes early, as requested on the day I scheduled the appointment, to fill out any insurance forms. Nobody spoke to me until 25 minutes after the time of my scheduled appointment. When I finally got in to see the doctor, he was very friendly, however, insanely rough on my mouth, causing a lot of pain to my gums. After the appointment, he told me I had several cavities that needed to be filled, which I was expecting because I had noticed some pain. What I found disturbing, however, was his questioning about who I had seen before and why they would not have noticed. He joked around with the other doctor in the office, Dr Steele, about how incompetent some dentists are, which I found highly unprofessional. I ignored this and scheduled my appointment to get my fillings done. Because I work nearby, I asked if it was possible to do a later appointment so I can avoid taking off work. The receptionist said this wouldn't be a problem at all and they were really willing to accomadate me in any way. This eased any harsh feelings I had prior. I made my appointment for 5pm on a Monday about 3 weeks later. On the Friday before, I received a phone call asking if I could reschedule. I said sure and asked if I could do 5pm on any other week day. The receptionist said that the lastest appointment I could do was 3pm, contradictioning her previous claim that they would accomadate me in any way. I looked at my work calendar and saw that, although it was a little far out, I could make my appointment on MLK day since my office would be closed and their office would be open, so we settled on then. The friday before my Monday appointment, i received a phone call informing me that they scheduled me with the wrong doctor. They were able to squeeze me in a little later, nonetheless though. Today, MLK day, I arrived to my appointment promptly and when I walked in, I was told I would need to reschedule once again because the doctor wasn't coming in until later. I have never been so shuffled around before and I refuse to continue seeing this doctor. read more
