Such a unique store. Great for gift giving for those who have a sense of humor. There is a lot of gifts geared towards men as well. The staff was so helpful with a few of the products. They were also knowledgeable about the origin of some of the products like the bracelets my husband was trying on. Upon entering we were in love immediately. We as a family were laughing at so many of the items, for good reasons. The store was well organized, and clean. This is a store you may want to talk around twice to see almost everything. Fun store with interesting and funny products. Great novelty items for gifts or for yourself. Tee shirts, mugs, books, posters..... etc. I can't provide input on customer service since I didn't purchase anything this visit. I will say that I wasn't greeted but I feel that a store like this doesn't require a greeting. I believe a majority of people visiting are mainly just browsing so greeting everyone might be overkill. I'm not sure whether the prices of these novelty items are where they should be. I'm a "Big Foot" enthusiast and did notice a cap with Big Foot on it which was $39.99. That price seems high but I'm not sure if that's just an expensive brand or they just marked it up higher than they should have. read more

Came in with a friend who loves this shop and despite not having any intentions to walk out with anything I found their wallets calling my name. I spoke with the associate named Ruby and she was so kind and helpful! I left with a Secrid wallet for myself and enjoyed smelling all the delicious candles. The place is definitely not meant for cheap gifts, but it's cute. read more

Great store for irreverent and clever apparel, bar accessories, candles, soaps and other grooming items, and miscellaneous tchotchkes. I love coming here for fun gifts for family and friends. Nothing you need, everything you want. On Good Friday this year I proudly wore my biker Jesus "I'll be back" t-shirt from Brick and Mortar. This store fits right in with the cool but quirky Carytown vibe. read more

If you need a gift for someone that says "I know nothing about you nor do I care to.", then check out Brick and Mortar Mercantile. They have all the white elephant junk you can imagine that can also break the bank. They also keep two parakeets in a cage within the store for any kid to harass, which I witnessed while I was there. Zero space for the birds to fly around. The owners, Ben and Tara Wegdam, claim they give them fruits and veggies while getting plenty of sunlight. However, no evidence of that was on display. The parakeets are clearly just there as a decoration for the customers. Zero regard for the parakeets well being. The owners will no doubt leave a charming reply below pretending nothing is wrong. Also, the name Brick and Mortar Mercantile is such a sad desperate attempt to cash in on the idea of being a small town business. So unfortunate the Goodwill store lost it's space to this junk in the wall. read more

This is a very cool store, the exact kind of shop that gives Carytown its unique reputation. Brick and Mortar Mercantile is the kind of place where you might find the perfect gift for someone who's hard to buy for, or make an unexpected purchase for yourself even on any given day. I stopped in off the sidewalk with a few friends and browsed over a cool assortment of personal bags, leather belts, quirky hand towels and t-shirts, unique but fashionable watches, and all sorts of products. I love a store like this that procures what appear to be items and brands of good quality from companies and places that I've never heard of before. The retro barber chair, old speaker boxes, and hard metal featured across the shop makes for a very cool and inspiring decor. I didn't need any help or have any questions so it was perfect that the staff was half-busy and available to say "Hi, welcome. Let me know if you need any help" but didn't linger and ask you repeatedly if you have any questions. Similar to the newer Carytown Teas across the street, I truly wish Brick and Mortar the best in what I hope will be a long running business and very cool new feature to Richmond's Carytown. read more

The staff was super helpful and friendly, but navigating the store was remarkably difficult. I had to look on three racks to find the shirt I was looking for, since the store is partially color coded? I'm a big American trench fan but would rather order online than play hide and go seek. Also, one of the birds sprayed me with pellets? They were so high up I didn't notice them at first until bird seed (I hope it was seed) fell into my cleavage. Needless to say, I don't plan on returning. read more

if tou plan on visiting this store do not do not take any children ! the music the store was playing music depicting usr drugs. the use the "n" word over and over. the staff was not helpful. the staff just sat on thier ass, never offering assistance. never offered to a disabled customer who happen to be in a wheelchair. do not waste your money. find another brick & mortar in virginia. read more
