So, where to begin... I started researching tailors/clothiers in the Richmond area about 4 months ago to have a suit made for my upcoming wedding. I decided to see what Alton Lane had to offer for garments/swatches/etc. After the experience I had... I'll never have a suit or shirt made by another company other than Alton Lane. Upon walking into the showroom, I was met by a smartly dressed young guy with a firm handshake. You can tell a lot about a person by their eye contact and handshake. This is a man everyone should want to work with. Richard had a neat rye bourbon on the bar waiting for me when I got there. Another bonus, a spirit to take the edge off. Richard had me sit down at the bar and then asked, "so, what's on your mind? What are you thinking?" It was a genuine question from someone that wanted to actually listen to the client and not just hustle them in and out. We chatted for a bit about colors, cloth types, etc and then he presented the fabric swatches. What an unbelievable range of materials. If someone comes in and doesn't leave with exactly what they're looking for, they're lying to you and themselves. After we figured out the cloth best suited for my needs, we moved on to bespoke shirting options. With Richard's assistance, I was able to not only get the suit I've always wanted, I was also able to have a shirt made... Just. For. Me. This overall, was one of the greatest experiences I've ever had. Into the booth. Having a body map or image made so that everything is cutand measured with precision... WHO WOULDN'T WANT THAT? It was a little uncomfortable at first but this company has an amazing mix of old school and new school approach to bespoke suiting. After the imaging was completed, Richard then pulled a few shirts and a pair of pants for me to try so we could establish a baseline. The shirts, even as a sample garment, I would've purchased right there on the spot. My shoulders, arms, hands, ribs, waist and neck were measured to ensure proper fit. The bottom of the shirt was even measured to alleviate any unnecessary bunching. On to the suit. As I said before, I've never been 100% fit for a suit or shirt. So with Richard's vision, he measured everything and made some suggestions as far and fit and style were concerned. Being able to fully customize, we had the freedom to take some risks. Meaning, removing material from the pants to give them a slimmer feel without being uncomfortably tight. We came to the conclusion that plain front and finished bottom was the way to go. Next, I slipped on a sample jacket and away we went. Even the sample was incredible (much like the shirt). We looked at the neck, shoulders, cuffs, vents, lapels and pockets. The lining and piping suggestions worked well for everyday use as well as for the wedding colors. Very cool. Overall, this is an experience everyone looking for a bespoke suit/shirt should give themselves. You owe it to yourself to go with the best of the best, and Alton Lane is the best. I couldn't thank Richard enough for taking the time to really work with me, think outside the box and push my level of comfort. What an incredible experience. The showroom was Pristine and neat without feeling cold and uncomfortable. Bright and open, you could take your time probably reviewing all of the different examples in just about as close to natural lighting as you can get indoors. The customizability of each suit is - quite literally - tailored perfectly for any taste. Beyond the wide array of quality fabrics, colors, cuts, and accessories, the stylists spectacularly pull everything together in dedicated, unhurried one-on-one consulting and fitting appointments. In just an hour with my stylist, Savion, and the vague general idea of what I was looking for, he nailed all the specifics of my work event's cocktail attire dress code while still helping to incorporate the little flair for the dramatic I lean towards. From the fit itself - helping find a balanced medium between the classic (even, dare o say, retro) looks I'm personally partial to and the more modern trends expected of attendees at a professional, corporate function - to every small detail I wouldn't even have though to ask about, from buttons to cuff shape to piping (piping!!! along the lining of the suit jacket!!! I didn't even know you could get that done!!!), but which elevated a Great Suit into a Statement Suit. I'm so happy I decided to take the plunge with Alton Lane for my first suit. I've always kind of wanted one, but didn't feel like I really knew enough about suits to know what I was asking for. Alton Lane is an excellent addition to the Richmond men's fashion scene. From the design of the showroom (leather couches, flat screen TVs, a bar, and a stuffed bear) to the fitting process (automated scanner confirmed by a personal store manager working with you) to selecting fabrics (100s all the way up) to the additional perks (a wide range of scotches and whiskeys welcome those who book an appointment), the Alton Lane experience will not disappoint. Once they have your size in their system, any future clothing selections are even simpler. I have had a great experience with Richard, one of the store managers, who greets everyone by name and goes out of his way to make each person's time in the showroom memorable. He has great knowledge of fabrics, design, and will offer style suggestions if needed. A+ all around. One of the best parts about Alton Lane though is that their prices are all inclusive. There is no upcharge for monogrammed clothing, different colored fabric linings, and other personal choices. Their clothes fit incredibly well and they do a great job of mixing up the fabrics available while keeping the popular selections. Just left A. Lane with my first custom suit. After my first appointment I felt confident I had picked a winner. I was nervous before starting the process because this is my first custom garment of any sort. Richard walked me though fabric squares and showed me finished samples that were hanging around the showroom. He was very helpful for a novice suit wearer. He had all the answers I needed. Today I went back for my second fitting. Suit fits like a glove and looks like a million bucks. I am so stoked to never get caught in the same suit as a friend. Patrick helped me today because Richard was occupied with an unexpected walk in. Professional and funny, Patrick made sure I was happy with my new suit. I would have never guessed he was the new guy in the shop. Needless to say, I will return for shirt and suit needs in the future. I may never dress off a rack again! read more

So glad I got the chance to come in and experience Alton Lane. I was greeted by Casey, who took care of every aspect of the wardrobe selection and made it very easy. He helped me pick out every option from the print of the shirt, to the monogram and style of the inlays. I was very impressed with the both associates knowledge of menswear and their attention to detail. The 3D imaging scanner goes to show how serious these guys are about suits. I merely dropped by to create a shirt and walked out with all my measurements saved in their system so that I can stop by and go straight to shopping in no time. After staring at all the shirt companies in town I finally pulled the trigger and went to Alton Lane. Was immediately very pleased with my decision. Patrick greeted me at the door and explained the process to me over a cup of coffee. The measurement taking process was easy and felt a lot more precise than my previous experiences at other places. Both big and small. I have since received my first shirt and it fit perfectly. They even got all the special details I requested correct. I am excited to say I have since ordered two more shirts and plan on filling out my closet with some new pants this fall, which should be easy considering Patrick had enough insight to already take those measurements before. I set up an appointment a couple of weeks ago to go in and check out Alton Lane. The process of setting up an appointment was extremely easy (with Ellie) and they were able to work around my schedule to get me in. I was immediately greeted by Richard and Peyton (the owner) and they made everything feel relaxing and fun. Peyton is a great guy (local to Richmond) and it was nice to sit down with him and Richard and talk, and not feel rushed/overwhelmed with everything. Richard took me through the process of fitting me from head to toe even though I was only buying a dress shirt. I had heard positive reviews of Alton Lane from another haberdasher, so I was curious and that curiosity resulted in a purchase of a suit, slacks and shirt. After receiving and inspecting that suit etc., I ordered an additional shirt and already have plans for future purchases. I do not need special tailoring as I fit into an off the rack suit with minimal tailoring, but I appreciate that at Alton Lane, I have the ability of pick the fabric, style etc. rather than merely selecting from what is available. In short, couldn't have asked for a better experience. I had the pleasure of having my fitting experience with Richard. He was incredibly knowledgable, friendly and honest without being pushy in any way. As a slender guy, I have trouble finding dress shirts with all the right dimensions. I now have a go-to shirt in my closet that I don't have to constantly tuck in the back because it's ballooning. Casey made it an absolute breeze for me, assisting me throughout the process.
